[Q] Best way to get rid of 4.3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,
This is my first post here, I searched for answers on the forum but didn't find them.
I had a rooted I9300 that I upgraded with the stock 4.3 firmware a couple of weeks ago. As many people I am not satisfied w/ 4.3 mostly because of the battery drain pblm.
So I tried to downgrade to the stock 4.1.2 (found on sammobile, I cannot link it but this is the french ROM from my provider). I used Odin 3.09 and I must have done smthg wrong because I couldnt reboot properly (locked on the Samsung logo).I did a hard reset of my phone and I had it running on 4.1.2 as I wanted. But I had no more network access as somehow I corrupted my IMEI # in the process. I thought that I was screwed because of course no back up... But this morning I upgraded my phone back to 4.3 via Kies and I got my IMEI back
But still my problem is not solved as I don't want 4.3 on my phone!
So here are my questions:
1) I have read that it is not possible to downgrade because of the Knox flag. I don't think that I have this flag because I don't see it in download mode and moreover, I COULD downgrade to 4.1.2 (but without network access). Then, if I back up my /efs and redo the same process, will I get a phone running on 4.1.2 with network access?
2) I would like to understand why my downgrade didnt work (beyond the Knox problem, which I think is irrelevant in my case). I have two guesses: I put the .tar.md5 file in BL instead of PDA in Odin3.09, and my flash counter wasnt set to 0. Which one is the most likely to have failed my flash? Maybe both...^^
3) Last, In the case I can't get back to my lovely 4.1.2 can I consider to flash a custom ROM from 4.3, or this upgrade will prevent me to do anything?
I am sorry guys, I know that it is a long post but thanks for your answers!!!

1) as I know s3 i9300 has no knox
2) which sammy version did you flash. probably it was somethig older than xxemg4. so with upgrade you also upgrade the baseband. as you have flashed a 4.3 rom your efs was converted to efs v2 which is not compatible with basebands older than xxemg4. if you now revert back to 4.1.2 with a baseband older than xxemg4 than your evs is incompatible with it and will not work.
solution: make efs backup - flash 4.1.2 with odin (I would suggest xxemg4 so you have definitely the right baseband) - flash xxemg4 modem (or newer modem) with odin, if it is not already included in the rom
3) you can always flash a custom rom by using a custom recovery (how to's are in general section - stickies)

The PDA was I9300XXEMC2 so the modem was XXEMC2 right? I think that it is indeed an older than XXEMG4 but this one hasn't been released in a ROM by my provider.
So I will flash again I9300XXEMC2 and then flash the XXEMG4 modem. Should I reset my flash counter to 0 before doing so (w/ triangle away) or it won't matter?
Edit: I checked Samsung naming convention, my modem was BUEMC2.

flash counter shouldn't matter. only needed to reset it is when you need it for waranty.
don't forget to make an efs backup

Of course. But as I am gonna flash a ROM prior to XXEMG4, it won't be the right efs in either case.

[Q] how to restore kies ability to upgrade firmware

Hi guys,
right so what i did is this
flash (odin) stock xwlp7 (three italy) stock rom
rooted in order to install few mods
reset conter using triangle away
recreated stock kernel from stock rom and flashed it
now i connect the phone to kies, it does indeed connect, but it says kies is unable to upgrade firmware on my phone, how can i solve this ?
i would like to keep the phone as it is now(with my mods) but have it unrooted and kies being able to upgrade firmmware un future.
it's my wife's phone and i want it to be ok if something should go wrong and i would have to bring it in assistance.
thanks in advance
you have already got used to flashing update manually from ODIN...when future update comes do it in the same way....
While you are already on a latest firmware and there is nothing to upgrade Keis to do what?...
Kies requires original firmware with all codes matching .
or download the firmware via CHECKFUS ..
Or join XDA Developers forum and ignore Kies .

sorry maybe i did not explain myself
what i want is the phone to be fine for insurance purpose.
so i re installed stock kernel after installing mods (status bar and crt off)
basically i installed stock firmware, obtained root to install these mod, then flashed stock kernel in order to be all stock, but apparently kies still sees something modified on my phone and says it cannot be upgraded.
all i want is the phone to be stock now without loosing my mods

Unless codes match Kies will not see a firmware .You will just keep going around in circles like all the other modify phone and want Kies to update posters .
A total removal of KIES and all registry entries with a fresh install may help .
SEE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089874
Copy of original .
One original firmware download from stock or branded provider rom threads and save or use CHECKFUS to download and flash via Odin .
Easy to flash if required and no need to involve KIES .

How to update rooted phone ?

Hello
I had rooted my S3 few days ago with this tool SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V1.0 so my phone has now root access a CWM.
Modem version I9300XXLEF
Number version IMM76D.I9300XXALEF
But notification said that there's new update available - 8,91MB installation brakes after restart cause lack of some signed files, is it possible to update my phone now but without erasing any data ?
I have found latest firmware here Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I9300_XEO_1_20120612172415_pax5uhw4id.zip XEO for Poland but don't want to loose any data from phone
Which tool should I use and what files should I use ?
Thank You for any help.
If you want to go back to stock rom why don't you use the Toolkit again? It's pretty straight forward.
Just flash the latest Firmware via CWM if you want to update.
thread: Official Stock Firmware (up to latest)
back-up via Titanium Backup if you don't want to lose your data

I'm still on stock ROM but rooted and with CWM, so there's no way just to apply modified update, or to unroot it with stock bootloader just to do an update and then root it again with CWM ?
@bordikun
Yeah, I have read it but it's full firmware/ROM if I understand it correctly, I got Titanium Backup and use it but just feel that all this is just an overkill, so many procedures just to update 8,91MB of data ?
have you tried there ?

[Q] root in spite of flash

Hello,
I recently returned my GS3 because of an audio problem.
My GS3 was rooted, so before to returned it, I used Triangle Away to reset the flash counter then I flashed an official firmware with Kies. The status of the GS3 was "normal" (in french but I suppose it's the same in english) and my counter showed a "Samsung Official"
The problem is that Samsung refuses to repair my mobile and claims my warranty is voided because my device was rooted and asks me to pay for the repair.
So I have two questions :
Firstly : How can Samsung know my device was rooted after a reset of the flash counter, a flash with an official firmware and an hard reset ?
Secondly : Is There anyone else who had the same problem with Samsung ?

Thank you (Im french so sorry for my English)

At first the phone was the official rom (Samsung 4.0.3) then I put Cyanogen Mod 10 (root), then I went back to the official rom via kies (I put away Triangle) and I again flash for a rom clean. Then I did a hard reset.
I never flash the modem
I send my phone with the official Rom (4.0.4) downloaded with Kies

Was it the right version... ex, was it originally on a carrier branded firmware, but you flashed an unbranded version?
Did you flash another region's firmware, ex Polish firmware will have a different CSC to an English one, and can show it has been rooted.
Are you sure there were no root apps, or CWM recovery zips on your internal sd?
All of these can show the system has been rooted before, and are grounds for voiding warrenty (examples can be triangle away apk, CFroot, rom .zips etc.
I have never had my internal sd wiped when I wipe data/factory reset, so this could be plausible.

[Q] Flashing to stock & reset flash counter

Hi all,
I'm about to reset my S3 (GT-i9300) back to complete stock, unrooted. I'm currently rooted and running Illusion 2.1 beta (Android 4.2.2 I believe).
I'm looking for someone with a little more knowledge than myself to run over the following steps and let me know if there's something I'm missing, or about to do wrong! Any help/advice/guidance is very much appreciated.
I've tried to do the research myself - I'm simply lacking the confidence to just go ahead with some flaky knowledge.
Download Odin 3.07
Download latest 4.1.2 BTU firmware from sammobile
Flash said firmware using Odin (only use Auto-reboot and reset F-time)
Root the phone (what's best to use for this nowadays??)
Download and run Triangle Away
Flash firmware once more via Odin
Is the above correct? Is there a way to format internal memory to get rid of the nonsense that has built up from custom ROMs/apps/etc.?
Also, I'm slightly unsure about the best tools to use for point 4 at the moment, but I'm sure I'll find them here
Thanks in advance for any help.

see my comments above. In addition here is a guide.
Furthermore make sure you have stock recovery & kernel, as otherwise it will maybe increase the counter (both should come with stock firmware though).

[Q] Downgrade S3 (I9300) from 4.3 to 4.1.2 (Stock as possible)

Okay, so i have an SIII, International Variant running 4.3 Jelly Bean. I've been running it for 1 year now, and i would really like to know the right way how to downgrade to 4.1.2. Mine has no KNOX, so it should be easy. I've backed up my EFS before upgrading to 4.3, so i have a backup. I used EFS Professional. I attached the link in a .txt file, because i'm still a newbie and not allowed to post links.
I've already downloaded the 4.1.2 stock firmware from SamMobile. So what's the correct order? Flash and then restore EFS?
I really don't want to flash the patched MG4 baseband, because i really want it as stock as possible. Not even root.
P.S. There's no risk of SDS if i downgrade, right?
Restore efs, flash with Odin then factory reset. Early versions of 4.1 will cause SDS.

How do i ensure that the file tar.gz file produced by EFS Professional has good integrity? The size of the file is 20 mb. I just want to make sure because there were comments about that tool, that the restore was successful but they still had null imei and no cellular. I just want to avoid a corrupt EFS.
I also tried to backup my current EFS using Ktool from the playstore. the .img file is ok, but the tar.gz file has no "nvdata.bin" - something like that. Can i restore using the .img file only if i ever encounter problems with restoring the EFs v1?
