GS3 I9300 Wont work on Wifi (Stock everything) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just randomly my phone decided that i no longer wants to work over Wifi. Nothing at all will connect through it but slow mobile data will. The phone hasn't been tampered with other than a new keyboard installed. No root no custom recovery no flashed roms. I would prefer to not factory reset or anything because of apps and personal data on it.
Any ideas will be tested ASAP as well as any questions, answered ASAP
Thanks Weave

Unfortunately the very first step in deciding if your problem is software or hardware is to factory reset and reflash the latest firmware. On an unrooted phone you will lose all your apps and settings, without the ability to back them up or restore them.

I am coming around to that fact sadly. I have noticed 1 other strange thing. It happened after the router went spastic for a day but its sorted now (roughly a week ago) but the other 2 GS3 I9300's and various computers and other internet capable devices still work fine but when i try connect mine to the Wifi connection it almost seems to kill it, at least for my laptop but i'm not sure of anything else's connection. I don't think it affect them but I cannot confirm that right now. It's cutting connection off to a speed a bit like dial up. Once i turn it off on my phone everything it fine again. Phone software issue I'm going to guess?

I checked and everything matched yours, although i lacked the same number of options. On this phone there is a "Check for internet service" check box but that does not affect it on the other 2 working GS3's.

[Q] WIFI rare problem on Galaxy S2

Hello everyone
I have a Galaxy 2, everything worked great, and one minute for no reason WIFI stopped working, I mean when I turn on the WIFI device starts scanning the network, the scan takes about 20 seconds (of course, no network is) and then the WIFI is turning off by himself.
Besides, everything works, BT,GPS ,also I can get and receive calls correctly.
I Changed for several versions of the modem, dozens of times ,I tried HARD RESET RECOVERY way -- nothing works.
my current state as a pic below
I'd like to accept any idea and help
Thanks all
PLEASE
Please, someone must help urgently
By the way, can it be a hardware problem with only WIFI not working ??

any suggestion ?

Hi there porusski!
The best thing to do is to take your phone to your seller, Galaxy S2 has a two year warranty. They should fix it or replace your phone, it shouldn't take more than 10 days.

Do you have a Netgear router by any chance, cos they suck balls, and as a general rule, will not connect properly to an Android device.

Hello guy's,
I took my phone to the carrier and after lab check they told me that wifi module is move physically on the board -- they say that reason is bad flashing of rom or modem... Does it make sense to someone?? Because i flash just one time in day when i by the phone - and it was work perfect 3 weeks....
wifi module moved physically??
im having the same issue here, will be sending it back to the seller soon
tried almost everything possible solution, nothing works..

Yes, you believe that crap? Their answer was not credible, there is no chance to move physically

I was previously using a Huawei router. It kept disconnecting from the internet, so I changed it over to a Netgear DGN3500. I've had nothing but problems connecting the Galaxy S2 to the router over wifi. Keeps going between one bar and no bars, and disconnecting, even I'm not that far away from the router. In order to get 3 bars and a good signal I have to be directly next to the router.
Same issue here
Hi all,
I have the exact same issue, also tried wiping everything and switching rom/kernel/modem, also tried restoring to a nandroid when everything worked perfectly and still wifi doesn't work. I noticed that the wifi services are not running also.
It stopped working gradually after working great for a long time, sometimes I was able to connect sometimes don't, until it stopped working at all.
Do you have any updates on your situation?
Interesting. I seem to be having the same issue. I can connect to the router fine but it wont let me browse or download anything. 3G is working fine.
I will try and swap ROM (again) to see if it solves.
SOLVED
Turns out it was a hardware issue - 2 resistors needed to be replaced

Serious data connection problem

Hi there! With SGS III being my third from the Galaxy family, I did not waste any time and flashed first custom rom the very hour I bought the phone. Everything was really great - I've been through Android Revolution, Omega, Wanam and couple more, but it all seemed too good to be true. Two days ago somethig went wrong with my data connection - I noticed it while I couldn't connect to Facebook. The "H" icon was in place and by the arrows I saw that it was "working" all the time. The problem was (and still is) that no data actually goes through. I tried different radios, kernels and roms - to no avail. I've read something about botched or misplaced IMEI issue, but checked it right after that and it is intact. To be sure I tested my SIM card in other phone and the data connection is working flawlessly. APNs checked. I'm getting quite nervous because I've only got my SGS III for three days and already it's.. Not entirely functional.
If you have any idea what this may be about, I'm happy to provide any information needed to identify my problem. Thanks in advance for saving my S III..
Sad to hear, unfortunately it seems you already tried the common solutions to solve such an issue, the only additional thing coming to my mind is to flash a stock Rom with odin, if it doesn't work do the same with a pit file or change your csc, because the last two options reset your whole user data to stock and your internal sd as well (don't forget to backup your data) it should solve it.
Maybe there is somewhere a leftover which causes your problem, good luck

Flash a stock rom with Odin and perform a full wipe *2767*3855# in the phone dialpad. Save important files to the pc first. This should fix it all. You can reroot after that and make a cwm backup of your stock rom.
-Edit- double post, Follow the above
Thank you both for your suggestions, but it seems that I'm stuck with I-do-not-know-what.. :/ Flashed stock rom and new radio via ODIN, but the problem with really slow HSDPA connection is still present. I am worried it might have something do do with IMEI after all - it seems that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29461950&postcount=3 they are explaining similar issue, but I haven't lost my IMEI (not to mention backuping nor restoring anything). What is more, I do not only have EDGE icon, but HSDPA as well, but the connection is slower than GPRS. Damn it..

The phone stops make and receive calls

I tried to search for the same problem through XDA but found nothing.
The phone is GT-I9300, Android 4.0.4, firmware I9300XXLH1. After some time after reboot the phone stops make and receive calls. The signal in statusbar is full and in notification menu I can see the name of my mobile operator. First I thought that something is wrong with my SIM-card. But after every reboot, as I already mentioned, for some time there're no problems.
Besides even after calls become unavailable, 3G and Edge are working fine.
May be someone can suggest any solution?

Weird. Doesn't sound like it's actually losing signal, just loss of functionality heh. As you even noticed you have signal and the radio is still functioning, at least for data, just not for voice.
I know it's a pain but I would start by either factory defaulting the stock ROM and see if it persists or if you want try a custom ROM and make sure to do a full wipe first.
The ****ty part is loss of data. If you have CWM installed then maybe make a nandroid first so you can revert back if it's no different

Flashed the same rom again and made full wipe, nothing changed. Downloading now 4.1.1 rom, may be something will going better
Have you cut your sim card or is it an original micro sim? Of you have cut it that's your culprit.

Hmm, that is messed up.
Maybe try a different modem?
It sounds like a software bug but to carry across a fresh install.... That's not right....
What ROM are you trying? Did it happen on any other one? Or just happens with this new ROM?

So i have 2 sims of one mobile op. The factory one and cut one. I began to think that the problem is with the sim card. So I tried both and nothing changed.
So may be there is any problem with micro-sim slot in the phone? May be the hardware problem. But if there is any hardware problem, why does the phone after airplane mode or reboot register in the network successfuly.
Besides when I call someone (while the network is still available) no matter how long the conversation is - the phone is available all the time.

Hey, just wondering did you manage to fix this problem?
My S3 is doing the same thing, only 2 weeks of having the phone and it started doing it today. I got full signal but it says I can only make emergency phone calls. Done the whole battery in & out, reset factory settings, and still nothing. I thought it may be the software update as I am yet to update but I'm unable to since I can't have data connectivity, I was going to use a friends' Wi-Fi to download the new firmware but it sounds like that doesn't help either?

[Q] Task650 (4-14) - No Carrier Signal For Several Minutes After Boot

Been having a problem with Task's latest ROM (4-14) and the previous version (4-1). Both take several minutes to obtain carrier signal (AT&T) after booting. I've tried flashing with full wipe several times, different modems, and adjusting APN settings, but nothing fixed it. My phone usually picks up service after about 5 minutes, but sometimes I've waited 10+ minutes and had to reboot again, because it still hadn't connected. Also, maybe this is just how it's supposed to work, but I've noticed that while my phone has no service, if I go to System Settings->More->Mobile networks->Access Point Names there's nothing there at all. Just a blank window until it finally connects. Is anyone else having this problem or know of any possible solutions? Thanks!

Have you tries rebooting with airplane mode enabled and then disabling it when fully booted? This has worked for me in the past, although I've never had to wait as long as you've stated you have for a signal.

I tried this method and it didn't work for me , I even did a complete wipe and re-flashed the rom and gapps, I also re-flashed two separate modems amd was never able to connect to the mobile network. when I first flashed the ROM everything worked great, but when my device went to deep sleep it never came back

Mine does exactly the same. Baseband is unknown and there's no IMEI info until it finally connects. I also noticed that under service state it said "radio off" until it connects and then changes to "in service".
That's very odd. It's not just this rom it does this on is it?

Yeah dude, I've been using Task's ROM for a while now and this has only started happening since the 4-1 version. I even flashed back to the 3-13 build just to make sure and this problem doesn't happen with that build. I was hoping the 4-14 build would fix it, but it didn't. I did see on Task's developer thread someone made a post about having this issue, but it looks like they never posted a logcat or anything to help Task resolve it. I would gladly post one if I could, but I'm new to XDA and they won't let me post on a developer thread.

I no longer have any issues with the time zone changing in the newest build (4-14). I don't know if you're on that build, but the workaround for that problem was to set your own time zone manually.

Apparently, what's happening is the radio doesn't turn on during boot (Radio baseband not recognized error or something). I fixed this problem by turning on the wifi temporarily then turning it off. Apparently this will turn on the radio and should stay that way. I hope this works for you.

That worked dude, thanks! It took me a couple tries, I probably didn't give my phone enough time to boot, but I got it. Definitely a lot faster than waiting for it to connect on it's own.
I wonder why this only seems to affect some of our phones, but not the majority? If I didn't know any better, I'd say it almost seems like they have slightly different hardware. I bought mine directly from AT&T the first week it was released. Don't know if they possibly made any hardware revisions since?

I have been having this problem as well.
Yesterday I did another wipe and reinstall. I did a full wipe (and in mounts formatted everything except my external SD which was temporarily removed.) after flashing the rom, I rebooted recovery and did another wipe data/factory reset and wiped dalvik, then I installed gapps. I then formatted the cache and data again and rebooted the phone. It seems to have fixed the issue for me.

I have the same problem. I have been using Task's ROM for a few months now and I never had any problems.
updated to version 4-14 and was enjoying it until today. Lost my phone service, for some reason the IMEI got corrupted...I don't even have the access point names choice in mobile networks...no amount of rebooting fixed it...had to flash the phone with a backup file and so far its doing fine..

Low wifi signal - Hardware or Software.

I am currently experiencing horribly low wifi reception. Sitting right next to the router the signal jumps from full to low randomly and it doesn't catch any wifi in spots where my other devices do. What do I do? Same happened in 4.3 and 4.4.2.
I already did factory reset, switched from Auto to 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, same happens (Well, no wifi with 5GHz band.). My router is okay, other devices catch the signal two floors down, while this can't keep it stable right next to it.
Screenshot of me sitting right next to the router.

I'm seeing the same problem. As much as I love the design, both the Wi-Fi and Cell reception are the worst I've ever had on a phone. HORRIBLE.
could be any number of issues. each persons environment is different.
i have a linksys wrt 1900 AC router and I use all 5ghz devices and the one max works wonderfully on the 5ghz spectrum.
could be an issue with your radio in the phone itself. im stock non rooted latest update.
The cell reply is great, I have nothing to say about it. However, I took it to the dealer and they'll change the wifi chip, we'll see how it'll go.

Do you have any (good) news from your dealer ? I have the same problem as snapz54. WiFi speed is about 10x slower than my 10 cm distant laptop when I'm not really close to my AP and EDGE/3G/HSDPA/4G data works well only 1 min if I'm in luck when i reset my connection (airplane mode on/off). The rest of the time, well... See joigned screenshot...
I tried stock 4.3, 4.4.2 Sense 5.5 & 6/CM/PAC/NuSense ROMs with stock/FlyKernel/built-in kernels and 4T.21.3218.31_10.16.1718.01L (3.15.1540.1) / ?Don't remember? (3.14.707.3) radios with no luck.

Got my HTC back. They fixed it, but flashed a different, Asian region (default language was chinese, many weird apps installed by default),ROM. Now I want to flash a stock ROM with no weird apps pre-installed and no weird languages. Is there a way to do this? The only thing I could think of is flash Cyanogenmod, then back to stock. Just where can I find stock HTC roms? There's nothing like Sammobile for HTC :l

Its a way to go back to stock. Check the ruu for your carrier in the android dev section. Or perhaps original dev section can't remember which one.

Right, now I am in trouble. Flashed ROM, forgot to wipe data (maybe it does have to do somehing with the problem.), booted, got decryption password because of "unable to mount /data". Went back to recovery and restored my old stock ROM. However, decryption screen still persists, leaving me able to use lockscreen only. The problem is that this rom has USB debugging off and Fast Boot on and I can't change that because of the password requirement, so I can't use ADB or boot into recovery using keys. What do I do to get into recovery?

Hold volume down while phone is booting. Should do the trick. That will get you into fastboot which allows you to get into recovery.
Holding Vol Up + Vol Down + Power while phone was on did the trick, as it restarted and while it was resarting I did Vol Down + Power and voila, problem solved.
