First backup your efs and yes you can flash stock 4.1.2... but after flashing you won't have any network, then you should restore your efs.. And everything would be good to go.. Backup and Restoring can be done by Phils recovery or ktool from play store...

Guys I need help please!
I was travelling the last 3 months with my S3 and my phone said there was an update and I did it (I was in Indonesia). Coming back to my country (Chile) I had no signal. After reading some forums I think I screwed up. Baseband is XXEMG4. IMEI is the same as appear in the back of my phone (I searched for it dialing *#06#). I don't know what to do to fix it. Sometimes I get signal but when I try to call it says that im not registered in the network. My phone is rooted but before upgrading I didnt backup the EFS. I factory reset it and nothing. Is the anything I can do?
I have signal but can't register to the network! But then the signal is lost and then comes back. Also can't call.
Please help me, I would appreciate a lot!!
Thanks for your time.

i'm from india and i flashed XXEMG4 the day it was released and after some days i was unable to make calls and was also unable to text people randomly! then i just flashed the indian f/w XXEMG5 and then the problem is no more! flash XXEMG5 via odin and check the result. if you face the problem again, flash the f/w-s that are released after MG4.
:good:

if you have a backup efs folder you can flash rom custom and use old modem
if you don't have a backup efs , if you flash another rom custom ,you need to flash mg4 modem

since the rom you flashed is based on MG5 latest release, it changes efs partition into a new format.
1st simple step: check your apn settings.
is your imei okay?
if yes, then flash stock MG5 via odin and then root it and flash the same rom via mobile odin.

If you have ever flashed XXEMG* (or newer) ROM, to keep your IMEI working, you must:
Stay with the EFS v2 basebands (MG* or newer). You may flash other ROMs but must return to the MG* (or newer) baseband
Restore your EFS backup (taken before XXEMG* or newer ROM install) to use older (EFS v1) basebands. EFS backup must be an EFSv1 backup to use an EFS v1 baseband
If the above don't work, consider sending for repair
I rooted my Galaxy Note 2 and used an app from the app market for backing up the EFS, the app crashed in the middle and I ended up losing the EFS. Nothing worked and I had to take it to the service centre (thankfully I could remove the flash counter and make the status to official so they did it within warranty.)
I have exchanged the phone with my sibling, I have the s3 now. The battery life on the official UK 4.3 version (since it wasn't out for India yet) sucks(any. I would like to try custom Roms.
Kindly link me to any existing thread(I Couldn't find one) if its there.
What all precautions should I take?
1)Backup the stock ROM(using Titanium Backup?)
2)Backup EFS(using?)
Thanks in advance

you can use the hc-KTool to backup the efs, is easy to use and free downloads from the play store. backup the stock rom is a custom recovery such as CWM, Philz, TWRP.

another precaution may be, install the correct kernel for rom you wear. clear that if you change custom kernel. but just these two precautions, especially with having the efs backup.

but EFS backup would require root? And the root method available is for 4.1.2
Rooting and Custom Roms were so much more fun on the sk17i

If you got the I9300 model with no sim lock- no problem.
Ps- notice that if your current build is below EMG4, than your file partition will be changed to EFSv2,
needs to be noticed if you'll try to go back to 4.1.2 afterwards

I think he can go back after flashing 4.3 ROM. I have done that.
Aashish, you can install any ROM as per your requirement if SIM is not locked with any SP.
But there is a chances of loosing IMEI. So please take backup. Search and download MG4 modem handy.

Yeah what you propose seems very straightforward BUT it would be advisable to do a full backup INCLUDING EFS, just check the EFS box in TWRP for instance, as it's not usually included in a backup by default.

Ah I get it now, in which case I would be tempted to go to an Indian 4.1.2 firmware through ODIN and the update through OTA if that's possible. That would reduce the chase of stuffing up your EFS by using an official Samsung update procedure.
Hi everyone my problem is related to the imei i think :3 . One day i flashed sensation v8 and couldnt make calls so i decided to flash stock rom UGMK6 , i saw that my imei was 0049*** i couldnt make or recive calls , a message like : you arent registred on network. I send it to the place i bought it , and he fixed it . I rooted it again installed twrp ,and fllashed latests qs rom , i got null imei . Flashed again stock rom from odin and got 0049 , i send it again for repair and got it fixed , he gave me a wired explanation your phone is tired don't flash more roms , is it even possible ? Atm i am rooted but i dont have any costum recovery i have stock one . Now how can i flash other roms without loosing my imei ?
A step by step toturial would be much appreciated .
PS : I know there are a lot of threads regarding imei problems , and believe me i have read a lot of them but i lost it at the point where efs were v1 and v2.....

here are the options for backing up / restoring efs (this list is not exhaustive)
EFS Pro - App needs root
SGSIII EFS backup / Restore - app runs from Windows / Linux and needs root
kTool - app needs root.
Philz advanced CWM rewcovery - custom recovery can take efs backups using the "Custom Backup" feature.
