[Q] Recover image files out of a Nandroid backup? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Last week i flashed CM11 in my S3. Before doing it, i did a nandroid backup via recovery and backed up apps + system data via TBP.
I didn´t realize that i had all my photos saved in my internal memory, so i didn´t save them before wiping.
Since i did a Nandroid, my photos must be stored there, right?
My question is:
Is it possible to recover all the pictures from that backup, without having to flash it? Maybe via "mskip" Gs3 Toolkit?
Thanks for your time!!

Lost internal Memory Photos - Help!

Hey, I've lost all photos from my S3, when i was installing the JellyBean leak. There isn't any way to mount internal SD card? because all the apps that i downloaded to mount it, don't work. When I try to use a program to recover the photos (like recuva), don't recognize any disk. There is anything I can do? Like resign to recover anything ?
Try via Android Commander and locate your DCIM folder .
But you may have wiped it .
Photos will be in your Nandroid backup .

Did you do a nandroid backup before flashing the leaked Rom??
If no, then there's not much you can do about it.
The same thing happened to me too
Lost all the photos.. I had totally forgotten to backup the DCIM folder.

Hi!
I am facing the same problem here, but i have a nandroid backup...!
Can i retrieve photos from that??
No, Nandroid only backps the system, not the storage locations.
Sorry to hear you lost your data, but you most probably have no chance of getting them back.
I'd recommend using a sync tool to keep the important data (Call logs, SMS's, photos, ...) all stored on the cloud (usually Google servers) so even in worst-case scenarios you still have at least access to those.

Nandroid does not backup internal sdcard.. So most probably your photos are lost.. In future use drop box to sync your photos automatically.. You can never be too sure..
Also, use cwm rather than odin to flash firmwares..

Hey bud, so i've run into this also, how i got back my files was by using one of the data recovery apps located on the play store. just type in a search for "data recovery" and there should be a bunch for ya. try some different ones out if the first doesn't work for you =) hope that helps!

If you data was on the external SD card then you could recover it, if it was stored on the Phone then you have lost it, did you do a Nandroid backup? if so then you could restore your data that way if not them im afraid you have lost all your data..Ive done the same thing
thanks mate , but actually it was in phone, when you make wipe data from CW than is secured photos and some data , but now iam make wipe from stock recovery and its done, phone internal card has arount 200 MB used and all is system etc.
i found some apk files, to undelete from phone, but i dont know if is will working..
last year i format my HDD in PC also mistake, but good software all gave back , so if i can connect my phone like USB drive ( for example drive E:\) i can recover in same like my HDD , but unless i cannot see is impossible, as MTP only shows device i9300 ...no disc
Hi sorry to use your thread, just to confirm, clockworkmod recovery under the backup, is a nandroid backup right?
Yeah the Galaxy S3 INTERNAL memory cannot be mounted as USB Mass storage as Samsung have blocked this only the SD Card can be..I had the same problem I wiped my phone and lost all my photos..if you want the SDcard as a drive e.g. E: then download app called easy UMS will mount SDcard as drive but will not work for phone memory

Generally a backup made but CWM is called nandroid backup..you can then transfer the clockworkmod folder to your pc for safeguarding.

I see. Does this backup also backup the efs folder as well? From what I've read, that particular folder seems pretty important.

AFAIK..It doesnt..you will have to back it up using other methods such as kTools or EFS backup pro...the reason being flashing a new ROM or fomatting resetting etc dont mess with this folder..it has a different mountpoint and hence is not touched..

[Q] Internal sd data missing?

Guys need a bit of help here.
I was on ICS wanam rom initially and I did 2 things:
1. Changed my csc
2. Did a wipe etc and updated to JB wanam rom
Now the internal sdcard folder becomes sdcard0, and more frustratingly, the data is gone, ie the pictures, music etc that I saved on internal sd card. App settings etc that are backed up via titanium are intact, but the pictures, music, downloaded files etc are missing.
The strange thing is, my wallpaper is still the same, even though I can't find the source file on my internal sd!
My gut feel is that, the data isn't actually deleted, but stored in some obscure location that I can't access.
Can someone help please? Thanks

If you were using ICS before and than you flashed it to JB than it will WIPE EVERYTHING in the phone except External Sd Card. you can try to recover them by using some of software in the market available to recover deleted files.

I didn't know that at all Why was it not mentioned anywhere?!?! When I went from Froyo to GB, I don't recall everything being wiped.
If I load up an ICS nandroid backup, would it recover those?

Sadly it happened to me also but I was able to recover a few files with a recovery software through my Laptop. I think you should try something like that... may be you can recover something. and something is always batter than nothing...

Every single place that I've seen mentions of wipes or CSC changes warns of data deletion. I don't think you're looking hard enough.

Yea I read those, but I thought it meant wiping the configs, system file, etc, and not stuff on the internal SD card. Even when you go to Settings, Factory Reset, it says 'pictures, media files' etc are excluded from the wiping.
So even if I load up an old Nandroid, the files aren't recoverable?
confirmed that restoring old Nandroid backup doesn't recover the pictures/media/etc.
Change CSC wipe is deadliest type of wipe available!!!!
Yeah, unfortunately all is lost. There is a moral in this - always have an off phone backup!
Out of curiosity, I believe that once you try to change CSC there's no warning. Is that true?

Yup. I always back up with Nandroid and Titanium and SMS backup and restore. But when the internal SD data is wiped, it's useless because some of the backups are stored in the internal SD which got wiped!
And yes, no warning prior to or after the CSC change. So be very careful!
I lost my internal sd data once due to that csc thing as well. Fortunately I made a full backup a week earlier. Yet it's still very very frustrating.

This is impossible. The Factory reset only deletes your installed Apps and data BUT no personal data that is stored on the internal sd card. Did you flash a ROM after this? If yes, was it CyanogenMod 10.1 or AOKP?

I used the Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit v7 to download and flash stock ROM since I wanted to go back for a while to test battery life, after it had flashed the stock ROM I checked and all the files was still there but TouchWiz and something else kept crashing so I went to 'Settings -> Back up and reset -> Factory data reset'. After this all files on internal sd are gone. I thought that it didn't delete them or I would have made a backup.
All I'm really bothered about is my Titanium backup files
Well you're outta luck. It warns you beforehand that it wipes all the internal memory... Sorry.

Why all your apps should still be available from the market .
TB backups can be set to EXT SD and also copied to a PC .

I know they're on the market, just takes longer having to download and log back into the apps and some are fairly big games, lost the game saves as well. I wanted the sms messages mainly, never mind, will be more careful next time.

This is why you use external SD for those backups and ALWAYS make a backup.

Otherwise, what other solutions are avaliable?
Sorry to sound cliche but have you set up any of Samsungs backup services, or used Dropbox? Your pictures might be uploaded to the server automatically if you did set it up in the first place.
