The most rock-solid stable ROM 4.0-4.4?? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Now that I've got my ZUGPe my Note is going into semi retirement as mp3 player / cycling gps / htpc remote and I don't care so much about features and customizing as I do about stabiltiy now. I have dealt with varying degrees of instability with many many CM and AOKP variations to stay on Vanilla-ish Android. I really really really hate Touchwiz, but do I have to go back to Touchwiz to get something really stable? I'll cut you off and say maybe my phone just never agreed with CM or AOKP so even if yours is stable mine never quite got there, never more than 2-3 days without a RR or lockup, and usually several RR each day. My old Incredible on CM goes nearly a month before an issue creeps up but to be fair it doesn't get a ton of use. Neither will the Note so I just want something solid and dependable, rather than cutting-edge. Thanks for tossing your opinions at me!

You seem to be very aware that this a loaded question and knowledgable to the fact that what runs good on one, may not on another, so I will respond to this.
I am in the same boat as you and do still enjoy the Note, even though semi- retiring it.
At the moment I am swapping back and forth on 2 roms to determine which I like best. They are older roms and never had a hiccup from neither.
Rootbox and Sons of Android.
I am having trouble however. I like them both.

its PT's also

Carbonrom V 1.8
I too am not happy with touchwiz roms. And seemed always returning to one of pt's builds because they are for me rock solid. But TW.
I have flashed a bunch of roms, and try most any AOSP, AOCP, AOKP, CM, ... searching for a stable daily driver that works all the time.
I have been running Carbon Rom V 1.8 it's 4.2.2 and for my phone stable. Very stable. ALL my phone functions work perfectly, call quality, speaker phone, bluetooth, even my call recording app works. Camera, video, all good.
Really happy with this one. Battery life is a bit better too. If that is even possible with the i717.
I had been trying the nightly builds, and the huber kernel. But was getting an occasional lock up reboot, etc..
Had given up and went back to ol faithful Padawan.
Then found a Carbon Rom release version for our i717, Version 1.8. I did a full wipe, data, cache, and flashed it with TWRP. And the gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip.
No OC but it runs fine without it. Haven't tried the huber kernel with this version, and don't plan to.

However, not to be technical, but its "Uber".
For Bulldogs function and for mine, we are not using phone function anymore. Just a sort of mini tablet.

I would base this question on "which ROM would I flash on my wife's phone".... She also has the 717, but won't let me put my dirty mitts on it That being said, without question I would put AOKP 4.4.2 on it if she finally relented. One of the most stable I have run, and blownfuze said he has no intention of giving up his note anytime soon. Which means we will get support for a while on that one.

:highfive:Yes, that is a great analogy, "which ROM would I flash on my wife's phone".
Only trouble is her phone is the i317. Carbon does have a release for her phone, but she likes the Jedi X version I have on hers.
I will have to re-investigate the latest AOKP 4.4.2 . I did briefly look at it and didn't get much past the known issues. Glad he fixed them.
I appreciate the developers here, and all the time they spend working and tweaking these ROMS.
However this Carbon works great for my i717. Camcorder, camera, gallery, all working fine. Bluetooth, etc.
I have had only one complaint about speaker phone echo, and I couldn't hear it on my end. When my wife called me from her note 2. I use the speaker phone option on about 1/2 my calls.
Thank you captemo for catching the miss spelled kernel. Wouldn't want someone searching for a mis-spelled anything! :good:
I hope this thread finds it's way to others still loyal to the i717 wanting something other than TW based ROMS. Retired or not, I like everything the device has to operate, reliably.
I did DL "Sons of Android" a couple weeks ago, and the .rar files opened up into something other than a ROM. Guess that one is gone?

I thought aokp 4.4.2 and all kit kat roms had issues with the display going crazy especially related to games and lock screens. I though the camcorder doesn't work yet for aokp. I am in the same boat. My s4 died so I am back to the old note. I am going to try carbon 1.8 or sons on android, as those are the only download links I can find. Thanks for this post.

Thank you captemo for the direction of the Sons of Android files.:good:
I did DL them. My connection must have been wonky.
I had issues with the Gapps file. It must have been a bad download for me. Tried twice. Got the ROM to load up fine, but without Gapps I didn't get a good testing done. I was using TWRP.
Without an MD5 to be sure my DL was good I probably shouldn't have tried it.
So I reinstalled Carbon V1.8 from my BU.
Since my last post, I did have a FC and reboot related to my BeWeather App. I have also had issues with this App in TW based ROMs I've tried.
I don't load allot of Apps, or run many programs. And the ones I can Greenify, I do. Maybe this is why Carbon works for me?:fingers-crossed:
I reset my weather App to update manually when I use it now. I think it updating as the program opens has been the trouble.

Is there a problem with Auto-Brightness on non TW roms? My display flickers when I unlock my screen. This happened on 4.4.2 roms and 4.2.2 carbon 1.8. Is there a simple fix I am forgetting?

The auto bright setting on the non TW based ROMs I have tried have not been as smooth as TW ROMs. I set the auto function off, and set it to low.
Some of the non TW based ROMs have the slide your finger across the top of the screen to manually adjust brightness. Nice feature.
I went back to the download dropbox provided by captemo and re-downloaded the files, and got a good clean ROM and Gapps. :good:
I am using "Sons Of Android" now, and like it very much! So far so good!
Thank you, captemo :good:

just can't get a reliable Rom

please, somebody please help me get a useable phone again. I'm not sure if it's how I'm flashing, the roms I'm using, or if it's just what I have to deal with. things have sucked ever since the first jb Rom I've tried.
I've had the awful non-responsive home button issue across all roms. constant random reboots, and fcs constantly. messaging, email, system ui.. everything. battery barely gets me through work. a phone should not work like this, and this stuff didn't used to happen with ics.
I'm using twrp2 and I've tried many cm10 releases, PA, liquid smooth. some work well for a few hours, none of them have been good.
please help if you can.

Jellybean or ICS?
Sent from one bad ass, highly modified, Samsung Galaxy Note running Novena A3 using the BEST in mobile apps, XDA-Developers!
I've run several very good, stable ROMs. ICS: BlackStarVII, VIII, IX and X.
JB: Eclipse 2.0 and currently running CM10 Stable.
All of these run flawlessly for me. I flashed all with CMW.
There are plenty of stable roms out there. BlackStarX Is very stable. It is stock with the ability to tweak and customize. you would need to give more details of how your installing
swyped on my huge phone
For the home button issue, if you flash one of the "alternate" kernel's, it fix's the home button issue (or at least, it did for me).
As for a rom, I use FJ's JethroBubba w/o issue, have had 200hrs~ uptime on my phone and would have had longer if I wasnt such a flash-o-hollic and flashed the updates for it nearly the next day...
Its not for everyone, but its solid as a rock for me.

I am so ****ing fed up with this phone. please someone help me out... after loving it for months I'm so close to selling it. just problem after problem on any Rom I try. right now I can't even use my phone to make calls. it rings on the other end but there is silence on my end. I tried clearing phone data in apps, tried fixing permissions, rebooting several times. I've had this issue on each Rom on and off. right now on cm10.. forget the exact nightly but I think the one after stable.
I just don't understand. it has to be something I'm doing or not doing since everyone else is having luck getting reliability. could using cwm instead of twrp somehow make for a more reliable flash? what else could I possibly try? maybe someone could list exact steps of how they're flashing, and what they're using to do so. I would be so grateful.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
are you flashing them correctly?
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
using twrp2.. I factory reset, wipe data/cash, and dalvik. flash Rom. flash gapps. fix permissions. boot. it seems sometimes the Rom auto restores my apps. if not I restore apps with tibu.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Your not restoring the data for apps on tibu are up? And jellybean for the note is a wip we do not have an official kernel source so its gonna be wonky sometimes. Some ROMs are better than others but they all fail every now and then jellybean ones anyways. Have u tried novena? Its a very nice and fast ICS ROM.
Family alliance
maybe I'll try going back to ics. disappointing since jb had some nice features. I've tried restoring just apps and apps plus data. but I've also flashed roms where I didn't need tibu and still same issues. but so many people are claiming reliability on these jb roms. not sure if mine is different or they just have lower expectations

Deep Breath....then pause, and think about this for a minute...
It is "VERY" likely that your problems are user related...(not to sound mean or insulting, because I do "NOT" intend to be..) But...
Roms coming to us are for the most part...clean. A factory build with mild tweaks, and certainly stable for every day use.
The problems come when users dont "clean" the device properly on a fresh flash, or they restore bits of previous rom data from non-compatible builds.
Now I make screw up's too, after nearly 10 years of android hacking. I'll forget a wipe function, or restore an app with TIBU that should "NOT" get put back without a clean app install.
Long story short, the roms here are solid in the ICS realm, and are very good in the JB side too....
I suggest Blackstar as a top pick, also the UCLF6 ICS build #5 from flappjaxxx....
Both are rock solid, and if you exhibit any problems beyond the normal android hickups, then it is likely a user/device issue, and not the rom itself....g
To follow Sarge, try a clean install of all apps from the market. Its a pain to reenter data, etc. but it sounds like you're already in pain.
Its really not that difficult. I will agree that some roms are more stable than others. Most of the JB roms do have some random issues. Here is the thing though. When you start flashing custom roms, you need to accept that you might encounter minor issues. If you are not willing to live with those issues or find work arounds, then you need to flash back to stock and be happy.
Keep in mind that devs have source code to work with ICS roms. Since Samsung hasn't dropped JellyBean source for this device, the current builds are all based on the google opensource code, without many of the device specific drivers.
Others have mentioned and I agree 100%, reinstall all of your user apps out of the play store. I don't trust any of the app backups from TiBU or any other tool. I also do a complete wipe and format everything between roms. You have to have some level of patience to dabble in the custom rom world, and it sounds like you might be missing that. See what you got after an initial install, don't overclock or change any performance settings...Install just the basic apps, from the play store and see how things work for a day or so. If things seem smooth, then add some more apps. Many people try and do too much at one time, which make isolating the problem nearly impossible.
ok, right now I'm on novena... I really hate ics after using jb, but it appears to be quite good so far at least. been on it for a few days and not really any issues. this time I also installed using cwm instead of twrp. apps were restored automatically with play store. sometimes that doesn't happen.. is there any way to install through play store if it doesn't do it automatically?

Help Choosing a ROM

Hey guys my dad just got a Fascinate for his work phone and it's currently running Android version 2.3.5.. When I checked for a software update it said that was the newest version. Really? It never got ICS at least?
Now if this were my phone I would root it immediately and flash something newer onto it but it's my dad's, and he honestly does not need that many cool features and all that. Still, if the process was simple and the features were worth it, then I would be glad to do it for him.
I've been looking through the Fascinate forums and it doesn't look like any promising Jelly Bean ROMs are out. Maybe I am mistaken?
What is the most stable ROM you can recommend me that is relatively "new" as far as Android goes, as this Fascinate is still 2.3.5. I would just like something relatively new that is still being developed/updated, and is stable as it's my dad's phone and I can't constantly be babysitting it and fixing any issues.
Thanks guys (I have a feeling CM10 or so is the ROM I am looking for, as 10.1 doesn't seem to be up, but just let me know what is your opinion.)
Unfortunately yes, after the 2.3.5 update the Fascinate was completely left out in the cold and never got any further official updates. Lucky for us though, we have some extremely talented developers that have done far better than any crap Verizon might have pushed out on us.
You are certainly mistaken about the Jelly Bean Roms, there are a few really good options. Personally I'm running AOKP Milestone 1 (4.1.2) with Devil kernel and that's been my daily driver for a while now. CM10 would probably be your best bet for a 'stable' rom, although nothing is broken on AOKP too, so it's more a personal preference. The biggest issues that I see on here are related to phone calls (speakerphone, ringtone not playing, etc) so if he's to be on the phone a lot then you should probably skip JB honestly. This isn't to say there are workarounds and fixes but as you said, you don't want to be consistently fixing it, so...
Anyway, if it's his work phone and he values stability above all else and doesn't care about bells and whistles then perhaps staying with a good Gingerbread rom would actually be the best way to go.... Superclean and TSM Resurrection come to mind.
Search for JT's cm10.1 (Android v4.2.1) for fascinatemtd over on rootzwiki. I've been running this as my daily driver for the past month or two. It hasn't been updated for a couple weeks, probably because nothing is broken (nothing that I can find...)
My wife has a fascinate that I have running the cm10 nightlies (android jb 4.1). I'm in a similar situation as you in that my family member primarily needs a reliable phone, they won't really appreciate how cool it is that they're running the latest version of android, and I'll need to help out if anything doesn't work...
I haven't updated her phone for a month or two, but when I do it's a simple matter to update it via cmupdater. Very slick.
The safest option would probably be the gingerbread-based GeeWiz 2.9. The dev is awesome and has recently updated the build just to make it neat and tidy.

Ah yeah I forgot about geewiz. Another amazingly talented dev we're lucky enough to have, and better yet extremely active on these forums still. Do you have the link to the 2.9 thread? I can only find the 3.3.3 thread (JB) for some reason.
I personally don't like the changes in 4.2 over 4.1 so I went back to 4.1.2 for the time being. It's only little things like the notifications and lock screen, but for some reason I like the layout of 4.1 better... but that's just me. I have yet to try CM10.1 though so I may just give that a go in the future to see how it is.

Here's the link to the GeeWiz 2.9 thread. I point out GeeWiz 2.9 since it's the closest to what Verizon last delivered as "stock" (Gingerbread) for the fascinate that has also received recent support/attention. Back in the day, I was partial to the final SuperClean3 Milestone 2 release (albeit for some esoteric reasons around the illumination behavior of the hardware keys that I believe have since been addressed in GeeWiz).
On the CM10 vs. CM10.1 question, I've had the (purely subjective) impression that latter is a bit faster...

I also think that 4.2 was a little snappier, although I didn't do any actual testing to verify that. I just get annoyed really easy by the little things that I don't like, like the new notifications, and I think for now I'll deal with 4.1 because it's still plenty fast for my needs (using SmartassV2 and Zen seems to help a lot). Hopefully in the future CM or AOKP will add some features to make 4.2 feel like 4.1 (kinda like how there was some older ICS options in the JB AOKP).

sorry for off-topic, but what is your cpu OCd to if OCd at all
I've been running 200MHz min / 1200MHz max and screen off 200MHz min / 800MHz max (normal OC, not LiveOC). Battery life has been pretty good with it and it seems to be less sluggish vs stock. I also undervolt quite heavily too, you can check my thread I made about it in General a while back for my settings. I'm certainly not one of those people who want to squeeze every last drop of performance from their phones because I personally value battery life above performance, but I certainly don't want a sluggish phone either so I've tried to find a good balance
Alright guys thanks a lot for the suggestions I saw several of these myself and did the reading it was just hard to decipher it all considering I was new to the Fascinate

Same here bbb6 with devil 1.9.5. But to fix my issues with MMS I just move to using "go SMS" with custom MMS setting and removed the stock app.
Side note: I do find "go SMS" to be horrible app along with the dev team. I mean yes the app works and yes I use it. But only because I have too. The is always nagging me to go try another theme, to get there launcher, or its sending me fake chat messages about how I should there go chat feature. I mean I have a list of things I dislike about it. But again it does get the job done....

XT912, Cyanogenmod issues, other roms... some questions.

I tried Cyanogenmod after hearing about it over and over.. turned out to be pretty terrible on my Razr Maxx. Constant reboots, CPU getting stuck at full load making my phone get really hot, poor battery life, bluetooth completely going haywire almost daily requiring me to clear dalvik cache to use it.
I am looking at trying a different rom, but from what I have heard, most roms use the kernel used by CM. Now, I don't know if the issues I've had are related to the kernel, or if they're related to the software. Does anyone know anything about that? Has anyone been using a rom that seems to work pretty flawlessly on the device? All I'm looking for is something stable, lightweight, and well maintained. Any recommendations?
I need to get a different rom on there, the stock rom for whatever reason can't connect to bluetooth in my new car.
EDIT: Sorry I meant to post this in General, it wont let me delete my own threads
I have this rom and have no problems with it and I have the normal Razr but they are the same inside. Try wiping every thing and starting over that has helped me a lot

Honestly, a lot of the time the AOSP Roms such as CM just don't work as well on our locked-bootloader devices as they do on others. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that the devs here have given us these great Roms, but they just don't work as well as Stock or Motoblur based Roms do. If you definitely want AOSP, I'd personally recommend CarbonRom. It has always run very well for me on my phone.

Try it with carbon and jbx kernel. Works very well.
Carbon isn't really maintained atm but the latest build is the last version of 4.2.2. Now they are working on a 4.3 version. I will try to port the 4.3 version when it's out but I think there will be no official support anymore.
If you have the xt910 there is only my unofficial build. The xt912 has a official build.

Installed the latest nightly, will give this one a shot. Thank you! I saw it in the list but I wasn't a huge fan of the design in the screenshots, but now that I have it on my phone I like it. Hopefully no bluetooth issues since it seems a lot was carried over from CM.
I had the same Hell with CM10. And DU. And when I asked about these issues the reaction from fanbois here was terrible and hyperbolic, so from then on I just complained about them. (No GPS? No MMS? Low-rez camera? FCs? Really? {der})
So I searched and searched for a good rom when miui stopped supporting the xt910.
+1 for Carbon. It is fantastic. Sometimes you get a black screen on boot so just reboot to BMM and fix permissions. I am so relieved to have a good rom. I now have stock on slot 1, Carbon on slot 2 (daily driver), AOKP on slot 3, and an old MIUI on slot 4. MIUI5 is non-functional as system files are not actually installed.
I have miui5 installed on system 2 with bmm so far it's flawless

Well that's dynamite, marconz. But that's not on 3 or 4, is it. I am not about to replace Carbon with MIUI now.
cm10, carbon, aokp. all of these roms gave me that random NO SOUND issue. ringtone, notification, alarm...completely went silent. even if i go to settings>sounds and try to tap on the sound i want, it does not emit any sounds at all. eclipse is the only one that has not done this so i am sticking with eclipse for now. but i leave Rom Slot 1 open just so i can try CM10 every now and then hoping the sound issue is fixed. trust me, i want CM10 to work but if the sound intermittently doesn't work like that, i can't have that as a daily driver rom.
This thread should be moved to general section, there is no development here

If u have to press the back of your phone to make the sound come back then I think you might have a hardware issue. My sounds will not come back until I reboot the phone. Thats a software issue

Quick ParanoidAndroid ROM question

Okay, I have been on Jelly Beans ROMs since practically build 1, it seems. I have never tried out another ROM on this device. Something here lately has really gotten my attention though, and that is the "Halo" usage from ParanoidAndroid ROMs. I spent almost an hour last night reading through the bazillion pages on the Original Android Development tab for this ROM (PA). There were so many mixed reviews about what works and what doesn't on the latest release that I am not sure what to think.
My question is, ultimately, is there a build of ParanoidAndroid for VZW Note 2 that is "mostly" bug free (GPS, graphical issues, etc)? I even looked at JellyBam, but there is even less of a clear message with that ROM. I need something for a daily driver and really don't want to have to do work arounds for the things I typically do on my device (Phone Calls to Netflix and all between).
Anyone have any ideas? Like I said, the only build of Paranoid I could find was the newly released one that looks to be built off Android 4.3 (Cyanogenmod, I assume). If that is the case, from what I have read, there are a few things that aren't tied up completely on it. Older build of Paranoid maybe? (Where do I find that?)
Thanks for the help guys.

You can try the 4.2.2 version of paranoid android if you want to be conservative. I think it was 3.68 or something

I'm running build 3.99, have been for a month now. Out of 10 I give it a..... 10. There's really no bugs at all, I hardly get graphical issues but they do exist. I got a GPS lock and you can by getting a lock in a tw ROM in maps, then immediately flashing as you would a normal rom. But honestly this is my favorite ROM I've had on all my android phones so fast and stable and great battery life. Hope this helps.

I think I am going to go with to go with a 4.2.2 ROM just for overall stability.
In regards to gapps, is the general rule of thumb just to use the most recent?

Yeah basically. Just make sure you download the one for 4.2.2 not a 4.3 gapps
Okay, got version 3.68 installed and proper gapps. Haven't had time to really dive in to get everything set up. Everything is running smooth and quick. The only issue I have at the moment is that I can't get a 4g connection.
Any ideas?
Thanks for all the help thus far.

Back to jellybean for now. Kitkat issue on G2 Int

Hi guys I have'nt found much information on this forum regarding the intermittent lag/crashes on G2s that I'm experiencing (d802 version specifically) running kitkat aosp ROMs so I thought I might report my experience to see if I'm not alone here.
After I upgraded from CM 10.2 to CM11 my device would start lagging at random times during the day followed itevitably by a crash mostly after about 3 minutes of use (messaging, browsing, youtubing etc) where the screen would freeze and go black (and eventually come back.)
A reboot was always necessary which resolved the problem temporarily. These crashes happened between 1-3 times per day and were extremely frustrating.
The device in question is a d802 running CM11 and stock kernel.
They happened after fresh installs, even with only system apps. I tried flashing a custom kernel, playing with different settings and switching to other kitkat ROMs with little to no change.
I finally bit the bullet and switched back to CM10.2 stable and all is well with my phone now. I couldn't make the phone lag if I tried, its back to its beasty glory.
This device clearly must have an issue with Aosp ROMs on kitkat (or maybe I just picked a bad one) and its a real shame. If anyone has the same problem please share your experiences and maybe we can get to the bottom of this thing

yep stock is better than cm11 or any aosp roms. aeonflex was a really good rom so was cloudy flex. they are flex based
CM11 has always been buggy for me. Try running a different 4.4 ROM,
Nameless is running perfectly for me

Pretty surprising that all the big players like cm or aokp would be the buggiest. At least there's other options for an upgrade

I'm using omni. Without any issues at all. No freezes or anything like that.
Tried PA and CM11, both really buggy, just like the op described. Flashed cm10.2 but it just doesnt work with my fitbit so now ive gone back to stock. While stock is good, it just feels so sow compared to asop based roms.
If you want a AOSP rom really hard, try "Mahdi" rom.. i tried it for a day and it fits perfectly for me
But now i'm on stock rom (CloudyStock) because... it's awesome and i like the LG UI
Using Mahdi combined with the furnace kernel, no slowdowns and very rarely do I get random reboots. Highly suggested :good:
I have these freezes several times a day too. I noticed one time that my systemui stopped working with it
my guess: maybe it has something to do with the systemui?
CM11 ran great for me on my D801, but I just couldn't deal with the in call echo issue.

blame closed source drivers. the devs making these customs pull hattricks so you can have a custom rom. All without documentation and such, thats why they can be buggy.

Is the speed really noticeable?
Or
Is it worth it to upgrade just because of this speed factor?

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. I'm currently using the latest carbon ROM nightly and its running like clockwork. Will update if anything changes though.
But its definitely worth experimenting with other ROMs.
