Just tell me, is this even possible? The only way I know to do it is to use saferoot, but apparently you can't flash roms with it.
I also tried to use the prereleased kernel but when I tried to flash it said FAIL.
Is there any way to root and flash from the mk2 kernel (sch-9545)?

No it's not possible to flash kernels. Your only option is Safestrap. Read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501
How exactly do you root then?
Okay do if you use saferoot and safestrap it's possible?

Root is easily gained...but on mk2 you can't flash custom ROMs...only a few modified stock roms with safestrap...read up there is plenty of info on safe strap available if you just look...unlocked/bypassed bootloader seems like it may come soon but no one knows...only with that will you be able to flash custom roms

Yes, of course - as long as you understand what's compatible with Safestrap. Please spend the time to understand the limitations before you start trying to flash CM or something else that'll permanently void your warranty.

Thanks for all your help. One last question though. Can you run two different roms at the same time with safestrap? That's what it seems like.

Yes, if you install the two roms into different slots. But that's obvious if you read the safestrap thread,
You can't run them "at the same time" since you boot stock, or one of the non-stock slots. i.e. multiple installed at once with the ability to choose what's booted.
Omg another problem
When I click install recovery, it loads, finishes, and nothing happens. The reboot option is greyed out and when I reboot manually it just does it normally. Why???

Are you using Safestrap 3.71? What do you get when you click "Install Recovery"?
I get a "Preparing Installation" window that says "Checking busybox", "Running installation script", "Cleaning up" then the "Reboot to recovery" option is enabled. Apparently something isn't going right on the install.
You ARE using a Verizon SCH-i545, correct?
Yes I'm using the i545/mk2 version. I used 3.71 and a few older ones and it didn't work on any of them.
It goes through the same process as it should, but when it's done, it still says "state: not installed". Before I even do it I have the option between install or uninstall, which is weird. Should I record a video?

Check the SuperSU app on your phone. It should be installed already after rooting, but if not, grab it from the Play Store. The root binary may need to be updated.

Warning: Total Noob here.
Just rooted my VZW S4 following the instructions for the ME7 build on the forums here with no problems. Installed "ROM Manager" via Play store and went thru the steps of flashing CWM. The app reports, under "Recovery Setup" that my current recovery is ClockworkMod 6.0.3.2.
BUT, when I "Reboot into Recovery" ... it always go to the default "Android System Recovery <3e>"
How can I get CWM running instead?
Thanks
You can't install a custom recovery on ME7 yet. It's been well covered here on XDA.

Thanks. As someone new to Android and the rooting community, is there an explanation on the whys and hows of CWM (e.g. what is required for it to work, why it requires more than rooted phone, how it should best be used, etc...)?
Just trying to figure out how everything plays together and what I should and shouldn't do.

The bootloader on this phone is locked, meaning you will need an exploit to bypass it in order to install a custom recovery. The loki method that was previously working has been patched by the most recent update, eliminating the only publicly known hole to install custom recovery. Without an exploit to bypass or an unlocking method we have no way to install a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, without these it makes it nigh on impossible to install a custom ROM.
Anyone else please correct me if I am wrong but this was my understanding of the current state of things.
Your 100% correct sir...

Make sure you are very specific on letters that need to be caps.
For example; when you type cd /mnt/extSdCard......make sure the S and C are caps or it will not work.
First time I did it I put in extSdcard and not extSdCard and I got the file not found error.
That should do the trick.

Um, Linux command line is often case sensitive. The question above wasn't about custom recoveries, it was simply referring to rooting ME7 which has long been possible.

That command line is in fact case sensitive. So you're wrong. The previous post was about using the root exploit method which has been done already, not unlocking the bootloader.

He didn't bypass the signature, he just installed the proper stock ROM. Or that's the most likely thing to have done.
If he's able to bypass the signature, he could collect the bootloader bounty.

Hi there!! A while back I was rooted and enjoyed it very much. But recently, my friend's S4 had a bit of a booting up issue. So I decided to unroot. After unrooting, I thought of updating (because I didn't want to break my phone from root. I'm paranoid). When I went to update, I remembered that I had frozen SDM.apk with Root Uninstaller. So I had the idea of trying to re-root it, to no avail. Something went horribly wrong. Any ideas? Thanks in advanced! BTW, I am on MDK.
NOTE: I had a few mods, such as the AIO Odex Mod. All of my mods EXCEPT for the toggles were uninstalled. I am a noob to this Jelly Bean rooting, please point me in the right direction

Use saferoot, or the ME7 root method. And I really dont think you understand that you don't need to update your device. What we mean is that on MDK you can already run 4.4.2 if you flash say cm 11. If you take an update you're effectively locking your device down, ensuring that you wont be able to run the latest builds when they come out and you would be making a big mistake. So I'll tell you what Ill help you get root, if you don't update your device, or at least if you do don't post saying you did, it would be so depressing lol. It would be worse than upgrading to Vista from XP or to Windows 8 from Windows 7.

What error did you get with motochopper? The easiest method to use would be saferoot if your comfortable with usbing adb or if you have a 32/64 gb sdcard laying around and know how to format to exfat use the ME7 root method
As always, go to settings--> security---> make sure 'Uknown sources' is checked and 'Verify apps' is unchecked. Then enable developer options if you have not already and make sure 'USB debugging' is enabled before attempting any of the above root methods. Also it might help to set Screen lock to None while you root, it can be enabled after. Post what errors you get if any so I can help.

You're mixing things up here.
One: Motochopper only works on MDK.
Two: Saferoot doesn't work on MDK, only MJ7/MK2 as far as I know.
Three: Saferoot doesn't require anything special as far as your SDcard size. The MI1 root does.
So, what bootloader are you on? Don't use motochopper if you're past MDK.

I need some help I used to have my phone rooted then I got an update to 4.3 since this update I have not been able to get root back on my phone. It seems that KNOX is blocking this process. Instead I tried to simply put a ROM on using ADB. I cannot figure out what is going on when I tried to transfer the file it said "Signature Verification Failed" I have reset my phone. I turned on everything necessary in developer options. I have uninstalled all my phone drivers and kies completely then re-installed.

It still says the binary needs to be updated and when I click continue, then click normal since I do not have a custom recovery. It attempts to install, but then I get the message- Installation failed Please reboot and try again. So I tried to reboot my phone a few times to see if it would work and no luck. Any ideas?
EDIT: I also tried to install SuperSU update using my sdcard and still no luck. Signature verification problem.

If someone could please point me in the right direction for a recovery program (loki) that will work with my phone I would really appreciate it.
Im hoping the problem isn't with the root but I havn't had any other issues. I downloaded:
UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4
Im sorry if this is noob stuff but I used to do it all the time with my old DX and now I can barely get it rooted! (took hours) proper recovery is the next step toward a GPE ROM I hope. Thanks, a bunch, nap time

First off - did you read any of the stickies about our phone? Unless you are on the MDK bootloader, you cannot install a custom recovery nor can you install this rom. You must use Safestrap to load any custom TW rom - no AOSP or CM based roms at this time.

Stickies? I'm a long time reader but first time poster because this one did my head in so bad, but I do not know what the stickies are. I'll look for them. So basically your telling me I have to do the whole downgrade method if I want to do this? Or it's just not possible at this time? Thanks for the time.

It is possible to install this rom, you just have to use Safestrap.
This is how to install:
Note: SafeStrap doesn't work with encryption turned on (disabled by default). If you don't know if you don't have encryption on/your phone isn't a business phone (in which case you shouldn't be doing this!!!) then you most likely don't have encryption on!!
6. Use this app to change your SELinux mode to "Permissive" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.selinux, this is required to use SafeStrap
7. Install SafeStrap 3.72 APK from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2448925, NOT 3.71 FROM THE VERIZON THREAD!!! Then click install in the SafeStrap App
8. Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu and update your binaries
Then to enter safestrap while rebooting hit menu key, from there you can flash your rom.

This does not work with safestrap its said over and over in the thread that it will not work. I tried it anyway per what you said and it wont get past the boot animation. You have to have an mdk bootloader and be able to install custom recovery for this to actually work.

thank you for that, which is why I have not messed with safestrap..its one of the first things in the post. so I guess that brings me back to where I started. Do I need to use the down grade method? If I do will it even work? and can somebody please point me in the direction of a proper (loki) recovery that I can flash and will work with my hardware. Thanks
EDIT -
believe me when I say I wouldn't be asking if I hadn't checked hundreds of threads already.
in case it helps, the end goal here is to get the GPE ROM on my phone. I'm rooted with towel. Ive gone in so many circles at this point I need someone who actually has done it or knows what they are talking about. Thanks!!!

If I downgrade to MDK firmware (I believe you can with surges method??), then I will be able to do this, correct? (without dealing with safestrap) by "this" I mean of course, finding a different recovery and flashing the GPE ROM.
If you read the top you would know that I spent MANY hours, reading MANY different threads and sites, that is why I am in the help section now. I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent from 11PM last night until 6:30 this morning with only a few breaks. I've flashed and re-flashed a million different files trying to get the results I wanted (bricked several times) and nothing worked, so this is my last resort

I see. So unless someone has a GPE ROM that works with safestrap, I am out of luck until a downgrade method, or some other alternate recovery mthod is found? I appreciate your time and help!

Understood. The learning curve has been very steep, as the last time I did this stuff there was only one version of each phone, sbf's were still around (don't know if they are or not anymore but it's not what I have to use to unbrick now) etc. Thanks so much for the replies and ill keep my eyes open for solutions as they are developed. I WILL have google play edition on my phone someday, and I thank all the dev's ahead of time for their hard work!
