[Q] About to get a S4 from work question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So work is giving me a S4 from Verizon. I am on the fence about rooting it because of it being a work device. They haven't said can or can't root but I don't want to mess it up the first day they give it to me either.
I haven't ever actually used a non-rooted Android phone so it is going to be very tempting to just do it. I am very experienced with rooting devices but not being familiar with the S4 I am a little apprehensive.
My question to the S4 users is there much risk involved with rooting this device? Are there a lot of bricks or is it pretty simple? Any reason you wouldn't root a work device?
I have read through a lot of the threads in the S4 section (have the root instructions) and have seen a few problems but probably no more than any other device. But I have read over the past several months about Knox or something which has caused me to question whether to root or not. This will be my first Samsung Android device.
Thanks!!!

Using SafeRoot to root your phone is extremely safe. Its been tested and used extensively and to my knowledge there is not a risk of really doing anything harmful to your phone using that method. It doesn't trip Knox so in the event you needed it or have to give the phone back just unroot it using supersu and your good!

Thanks Mistertac, that's what I wanted to know. Appreciate it. Will probably be checking these forums more frequently now. :good:
Although this is going to be a completely different experience from my personal Nexus 5 I am looking forward to trying out the Samsung.

@tgrgrd00
No problem.. If you've been around the block with your Nexus then you should be good to go. There is always a chance for things to go wrong maybe I could have worded that differently but you get what im saying. SqfeRoot is the way to I've used it a couple times its really dummy proof. The dev who came out with it is a good dude and can help you if u need it in that thread
Its right in the dev section for our phone couple threads down

From what I have seen this device is pretty cool I have to say. Sooooo many features it's going to take a while to get through everything but it is nice.

Should I Root?

Note has been an epic phone for the past couple of days. Absolutely love it. I am just wondering if I should root it. Never rooted before as this is my first android phone. I think it would be kinda of fun to mess around with roms and stuff. I am just worried that I will brick my phone and lose the awesomeness. Can someone help?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
There are no custom rom's yet, but if you want to read, overclock, remove crapware, backup your apps effectively, block ads, and void your warranty, then by all means.
Sent from my almost cm7 p925
i would solely because I'm just curious as to how fast my phone can feel without the crapware from att and possibly some ocing and uving. I'm fearful of the counter though, but I might just do it this weekend once I'm done with midterms.

This is what I always tell people when they ask should the ROOT and ROM. I can't tell you weather you should or shouldn't. You need to make that choice yourself and know that no one is responsible for what you do to your phone.
But if you decided to ROOT and ROM your phone the first thing on your to do list is.....READ. Read everything. Read how to ROOT and how to ROM. Read about the tools and programs you are going to use. Watch youtube videos and tutorials. And when you're done with that......RE-READ and RE-WATCH all of it!
I can't stress how important it is that you understand what you are doing. If you don't get what you're doing you will end up on the forums begging for help to fix it.
I read up on Rooting and Roms for a few weeks before I tried to do it myself. I also asked questions in a respectful manner not expecting an answer RIGHT THEN. I also hit the THANKS button, that goes a long way!
So in a nutshell....EDUCATE yourself and have respect for the community when you ask questions.
Alex
a thousand points to mortem very true and valid advice. no truer advice could be spoken about android mods and roms. My personal favorite is when people try to use international roms on things like the skyrocket.
Once you get the itch, you will do it eventually
But good advice above! And while you are researching, a flash counter workaround root method will likely be found.

agreed.....people don't read, they just want and don't bother checking into things. And then they get all mad when they jack up their device.
heh there were atleast 40 bricked epic touch 4g's bricked when the isgs2 ics roms leaked lol people just wouldnt listen.
I would wait until you are past 30 days and know you are going to keep the phone or you have no exchanges. after that you will have to go to warranty support so you can flash back to stock. No need to make additonal work before 30 days.
Who know there may even be a super 1 click root by then?

First make sure the s4 box is the mdk model. Absolutely under no circumstance should you allow anyone to give you a me7 model nor let any rep activate your phone at the store. Say your corporation requires you to activate it while in their presence. Just tell'em you work for the government. Better yet say you're an auditor for the irs, no one wants to F with that. If the store doesn't have a me7 model then go to every possible location that sells vzw s4s till you find a mdk model. Alot of people have luck with best buy, I got mine at radio shack. Dont turn your phone on until you have came home and read the thread on rooting mdk or check in here for further instructions.
God speed.

You can install a custom recovery with mdk. But if youre not rooting it doesnt matter which version you get.

That's what I thought. I will defo report once I get it in 2 days.
Damn I thought I made a well thought post lol. Also you could probably make a decent profit by getting a mdk then selling it to someone who has a new me7.
P.S. For future reference, you didn't jailbreak the S3, you just rooted it. Jailbreak is for ios only and is different from root. Some people will rip you a new one for saying that. Imagine giving the answer "the millennium falcon" when asked what ship Capt. Kirk commanded...at comic-con.

It's root-able, just can't install a custom recovery and thus custom ROMs and kernels as of yet. However, a workaround is in the works that will at least allow you to flash custom ROMs that use the TW kernel. Of course, all of this only matters should you decide to root your phone.

Its been rootable for quite some time. Guides posted in the dev section. Even without custom roms you can make some decent customizations with xposed framework and the wanam module.
If I helped you hit that thanks button please. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

As of now I really don't see a reason to root.
Although the thing I like is the app that allows with root to move any app to SD.
But is it worth rooting only for this? I don't know maybe later in few months , maybe in a year

whats the deal with vroot is it safe?

I've been thinking of using vroot and have read many have already used it with no problem but is it safe ? Is xda going to release this exploit safely without the possible backdoor to china?

Not sure. I believe some of the devs are trying to pick it apart and figure out what it is communicating. Some feel it is safe, others do not. I'm not sure what xda review process is for stuff like this, but they have some pretty talented folks on staff if they have banned the links I would trust their judgement for now until proven otherwise.

yea I have and some say its safe but other say its the devil but its confirmed working thats for sure. I want root but infecting my pc and phone to get it is hardly worth it. I figured it was fair question to ask to see what others thought outside the thread after all this is Q&A:laugh:
from what i have read, no one has found anything malicious or dangerous, just a lot of things that are suspect.
personally, i would just wait until the devs find another root method just to be sure. it isn't worth it imo...
Since vRoot is apparently used to root 3500 different devices (are there really that many?) I would assume that the IMEI is used to identify the device being rooted so rooting can be carried out properly. This is completely my guess since I don't know anything about any of it.
I just used it and rooted. It was a pain in the butt but successful. It's a very simple process also.

[Q] Just got the phone

I just got the S4 from a contract upgrade. Soo I have a few questions I can't seem to find from the search engine. How do I know if I can root or use safestrap? Also is this http://www.spigen.com/brands/samsung/galaxy/galaxy-s4/galaxy-s4-case-slim-armor-view.html a good case if anyone has it?
Everything depends on your build number.
Chances are you have either mj7 or mk2.
Everything you will need is in this thread just make sure you read very thoroughly and understand it before you try flashing anything.

Well the issue I was having was a overload of information. I couldnt figure out if I needed safestrap or not. But that also could of been an issue of my common sense not working and not wanting to brick it. Since this seems alot diffrent from my rezound and Incredible. But yeah verizon.
Also josh how bad is the customer service doesnt really matter since I bought it just wanna know what I may run into.

Unless you have a developer edition you do not have an unlocked bootloader. If you have mk2 build you cannot install a custom recovery. Your only option for custom rom at this point is safestrap and a rom that is compatible with that. You have a lot of reading to do.

There are threads that were created by some of the regulars here (including me) which are there to try to help people avoid bricking their phones and to answer questions (like yours) that are asked on a daily basis. That's what he suggested reading. I'm not sure why you're so unwilling to help yourself understand, particularly given the consequences of ill-considered actions. After all, XDA is not a tutorial site, You're expected to read, understand, and take responsible actions based on your understanding.
Flashing a custom recovery on a post-MDK phone is a completely avoidable mistake. Some of us have spent a lot of time writing up explanations of what you can and can't do, so we'll point to those posts rather than repeat ourselves,
The tragedy of YouTube is that nobody updates - people post a video about rooting their original MDK GS4, That was OK back then, but the multiple releases since then have made those videos invalid, but they stay there, enticing people to brick their phones. XDA didn't create those videos and isn't responsible for fixing the problems caused by them.

The point is that searching and searching is not necessary because all the relevant info is in a couple of pinned threads..... People can be harsh but understand where they are coming - at least you got some useful responses - I would have just ignored (but I guess I couldn't help myself). I trolled for months and read a lot of posts before my first post. Moral of the story is, like the first response said, use safestrap.

People like you that cause so much aggravation in these forums and refuse to take any time at all. Grow up.
