ZU Screen is easily broken, is that true? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I'm currently using a S4 but considering switch to ZU. My fr owned ZU but he told me that screen is just very easily to get a crack on it. He aslmost do nothing, just take it out from his pocket. I did some google and found that many people had the same problem.
Darn, I LOVE the big screen on ZU so much.

I've dropped mine twice on to concrete once from just over 1m and the second time from almost 2m from the cab of my 6 1/2 ton 4x4 truck.
The second time did have a flipcover on to save it - neither time ended in a broken screen

I too have drop my ultra twice ones from my bike while riding and another time I drop it. The Basel maybe scratch but the screen intact

I cracked my screen a few months back (a week after I got it) and I didn't even drop it! No idea how it happened, considering it was in my pocket when it happened, but 3 months and $360 later, I got it back and bought an Incipio case and tempered glass screen protector and it hasn't happened again.

Yeah, some people will get a bad one, and I assume Sony has fixed this "issue" on the newer ones.

I cracked my screen while in my pocket. I actually dis assembled my phone today and was surprised by the build. The phones frame is actually poly carbonite plastic with aluminum trim added to the sides. The top and bottom trim is also poly carbonite I'm guessing for the anttenna signal. I'm gonna make a post of my phone disassembly. But the main reason for screen cracking is cause the phone is so big and so thin. The screen glass looks to only be 1- 1.5mm thick so when it flex the glass cracks.

Scratch resistant.. really?

It's only been a month since I bought my S3. I have 5-6 very tiny scratches on my screen which are easily visible in bright light. :crying:
It's like a group of scratches at the bottom center of my screen. I am still trying to figure out how I got them. I can assure you that I am not responsible for these scratches. :crying:
I have treated my phone with respect and yet it has developed these scratches. I have never dropped my phone. I have never kept it face-down on any surface.
The funny part is that the back cover on the Samsung Galaxy S3 sucks as well. Its got tiny scratches all over even though I have never ever kept the phone on any surface without keeping a micro-fiber cloth under the phone!
The only possible explanation for the scratches can be dust. Can I claim warranty on the phone since the screen is supposed to be scratch resistant?
I am super sad now
A few fine sand particles against the glass in a pocket will do more than two sets of keys.

If you can't put a screen protector on a $700 phone then you should reconsider the decision of owning a smartphone.

I am not allergic to either. The problem is that I ordered the TRIDEA ALIKE case on 8th June from ebay but there were some manufacturing problems and the case delivery got delayed. It should be here in a weeks time. There are no decent screen protectors available in the local market. The ones that are available on ebay will take 2 weeks to be delivered to my country. With the case still not delivered, I am still contemplating about ordering a screen protector online or waiting for it to hit the stores.

No one in their right senses would think of not putting a screen protector on a costly phone. Like I said, I was waiting for some screen protectors to hit the local markets since I already had a bad experience with shopping for a case online. I ordered it a month back and it's still not here.
I heard that the Galaxy s3 comes with an additional coating that repels oil. Could it be possible that I have only scratched this coating and not the actual glass. If yes, how can I tell the difference?

No where in your first post did you say that you took precautions to protect your $500+ high tech toy ! It almost sounds like your blaming Samsung for your stupidity and you wanted support from other users here !

@phoenix
What makes you think I am stupid? I have had 2 phones with gorilla glass before I got my s3 and none of them got a single scratch on them ever. I started using a screen protector when my phones were a couple of months old since its human nature to not care much about old things.
I was waiting for a good screen protector to be available in the local stores because I only just got the phone and thought It was okay to wait for sometime before I get a screen protector. I had no idea the S3 screen was going to be this delicate.

1 SGS1, unscratched. 3 SGS2s, one with small scratch on screen and many chips in bezel, one with totally smashed screen (tram ran over it), one unscratched. 1 SGS3, tiny scratch on screen. 1 Lumia 800, unscratched (unused, to tell the truth).
I can barely see the scratch on the SGS3, it's ca. 3mm long, upper right of screen. And as said, since it was my fault for taking it to a beach, that's even less reason to beat myself up about it.
Screenguards seem to be the way forward for you. I just don't care enough - phone's for using, and I can't be bothered with the hassle of "babysitting" it instead of using it.

That makes sense. I hate the fact that I have to treat my phone like a living thing. I am only going to do this to get a good resale value on my phone when I decide to upgrade just like i did with my older phones.
Anyway, does anyone have the answer to my question. How can i tell whether i scratched the screen or the coating!
Scratch resistant =/= scratch proof.

[Q] Not using a case? How is the phone holding up?

I generally don't like using cases on my phones but since I paid so much for my Xperia S I have been using one. I was curious how people who don't use cases on it have had their phone look like. How has the Xperia S survived the day to day normal wear and usage?

I didn't use a case at first but a porch, and I hit a table with the lower left edge of my s (really soft, I didn't even drop it, I just put it down quickly) and it cracked and the paint peeled of. I drew over it with nail polish but I have been using a hard case ever since PLUS a porch.
And I still get a lot of scratches on the housing where the cut outs of my case are (mostly around the USB and headphone plugs, even though I treat my phone really carefully)
I wouldn't recommend using the phone without a case, it scratches way too easy.

Me myself didn't like a case as well
I usually put my phone in the side pocket alongside with headset and it scratched. Hopefully i have it black so the scratch is not really visible.
And do not ever put your phone in the same pocket with your car keys. In my own experience it can dent your phone pretty bad

I got a white Sony Xperia S a couple of days after the release. Never used any cases, I really hate 'em unless they add functionality.
I dropped my Xperia S only once on tiles, but it wasn't a very high drop. You can only see the scuffs if you look for them. They're really tiny.
Also, the only other scratch I have on my Xperia S is just my fault. I tried putting it in a tin case-like thing I had on a tripod which I had made for a smaller phone, but what I didn't realise was that the edges were very sharp.
My conclusion: Unless you like dropping your phone on the floor or scratch it on purpose with very sharp items, the Xperia S probably won't have any scratches at all. Even in white. The screen too is fine and the Sony (Ericsson) logo on the back isn't scratched either.
I've had mine for 5 months. It once dropped from a very low height facing down, so the screen kinda had a "scatter" from the side (volume up height) and the line goes until the very top of the USB port. It is only seeable at certain angles. There are also tiny scratches, but they are on the screen protector, so.... It once dropped from a slightly higher height than the first, but nothing happened.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
I am not surprised that the white one has scratch problems. My buddy had a white HTC Hero with teflon coating and it looked pretty bad after a year or so.
My Xperia s has a thin case so the outside is mint. The screen has really minute scratches that all screens get that you can only see in certain light but no biggy. I never rock a screen protector. I would like to go case free but seeing peoples comments it makes me a bit nervous.

The Xperia S already has a screen protector on it from the factory. Going case free isn't a problem for me at all
I wouldn't remove this protector though. I read somewhere that it could make capacitive button sensitivity less.
I use some cheap pocket-like condom to keep my sola semi-safe.
Back in 2010 when I just bought a brand new HTC Desire I immediately wanted to protect it. I mean PROTECT IT.
I bought the Krusell Orbiflex thingie (was like uberexpensive) and was pretty happy with it until... after few months I realized that the screen was actually scratched by the case itself!
Then I sent over the HTC to the service point (because of broken camera or something). I repeated the procedure 5 times, so they swapped the unit into a new one.
I was happy and stuff and put the new, shiny device into the same case .
After few weeks my brand new HTC was scratched again in the very same spot beacuse of the case. AGAIN.
Maybe a little bit OT but kind of funny story it was .

[Q] How easily does the ASF scratch?

I just got my Z Ultra GPE. I have the incipio dualshine case for it but the included screen protector is not very good and I ended up with a pretty poor application. I ordered a glass protector from Glass-M but it won't be here for a couple weeks. Do you guys think I can get by without a protector without scratches until the glass comes? I only really put it in my pocket. One edge of the protector I have didn't adhere properly and I'm afraid fuzz/dirt will get under and scratch it. Other option is to just use my S4 until I get the better protector.
I've had my Ultra since september and i don't have a single (noticeable) scratch on the front (i'm not using any additional protection). You'll be fine, but accidents happen, so it's not possibble to tell if yours will be scratch free in a few weeks. I do have a couple of scratches on the back though, but i couldn't care less.

@hamdogg mentioned an easy way to apply the protector, use water - added bones is the phone is waterproff
you should be able to remove and reapply the protector.
I've used mine since September with no case or added protection. Like @LordManhattan no scratches or wear at all. Dropped it a couple of times without issue.
Worth adding I dont use a stylus or pencil or anything other than fingers, pretty sure that would degrade the film pretty quick.

I can't see scratches on mine when I am using it. But turn of the screen and swing the phone side to side until the light hits it just right and I see all kinds of fine scratches. How easy is it to scratch? I'd say very easy. And it's not just fine scratches that plague this phone but also the fading of the oleophobic coating. You'll notice the part of the screen where you constantly touch gets rougher compared to the rest of the screen. In the end I'm just waiting for mine to scratch to the point where I will have to remove the ASF.

On mobile....
Ok thank you all for the feedback. I decided to just use it. If it's something that will scratch in 2 weeks of light use and no accidents I'd just assume return it.

Really not sure what to think
I really dont know what to think of it i wanted to buy the z ultra (the normal one..not google play edition because i cant get it in germany)
and the only thing that holds me back is..i can live with a not so well camery..i only take a few photos but i wouldnt be able to live with a device that just takes every single little fingerprint and scratches easily some people say it scratches easily ..some dont i wouldnt use anything else then my fingers to operate it..and carry it safely in my handbag
is it acceptable or really that bad? else i will probably go with a note 3 or a nexus 5 + nexus 7..so i have a small device on the go and a nexus 7 for watching streams/videos at home
I've got some scratches in the middle of my screen from one mistake placement in the same pocket as my keys. Surprised since the screen is supposed to be fairly resilient, I'll be looking into a protector shortly.
that kinda scares me x.x even if i would never put the device next to my keys..it will be most likely in that power cas einside my handbag x.x

You didn't scratch the screen. You scratched the anti shatter film. It's still annoying though, so yeah, you should probably get a second protector, or just remove the ASF and go naked (it's glass after all, so it won't actually scratch unless you're really unlucky) or put the new third party protector on the glass. One protector is bad enough (how it feels to touch), so i can't imagine using two

warning to ultra owners

it's been some sad days for me. as you might have noticed around this forum I loved my ultra. but some days ago it cracked, of no obvious reason. had it in my pocket and when I took it out there was one single crack over the screen. and the display refused to register any kind of touch.
so what is my warning? I removed the anti shatter film, and I think I shouldn't have done that. so my message to everyone considering this, just don't. there's probably a very good reason it's there and why it's glued.
now I got myself a m8 and it's probably the best device out there. the day the successor to the ultra turns up I will go big again.
Hope to see you around, mate! I'll probably stay with the Ultra until there's a new and interesting "phablet" on the market. Doesn't look like the Ultra 2 is happening, and I'm not going to buy a Samsung, so I guess I'm stuck, lol.
I would never changed phone if it didn't break. but I guess this is a culprit with such a big device, that it can bend and crack that way. next time I'm with a big one I'm buying a hard case!

Dang that sucks dude. I still have the ASF on mine and holy crap it's scratched to hell and back. I've sat on it and keep it in my pocket all the time without a case on but sometimes I take it out. I'm lucky when it comes to the cracking screen part, but I'm bad luck when it comes to waterproof. I got water in it somehow last night in the shower. Water is now under the dang screen but doing the rice bag helped a lot and got most of it out as of this morning. Funny thing is even though water is in the phone and I can hear it splashing around, the phone was still working!!! This thing is a freaking BEAST!!! Screen started to flicker so I turned it off and dropped that puppy in a bag of rice where it's at right now. Turned it on this morning and it's still working and no more screen flicker. I'm going to keep it in rice for the rest of the day.
Lmfao @ "though water is in the phone and I can hear it splashing around, the phone was still working!!!" That was hilarious! I'm glad it's still kicking for you, that paragraph cracked me up!

thats exactly what happened to mine i miss my z ultra but hopefully i will get the updated z ultra if they make one. Mine did it without removing the anti shatterproof.
I Found Several Good Hard Cases!
I've had my baby since 10/01/13 and I absolutely love my BEAST! I'll post pix when I get home but you guys ought to think about grabbing the camera attachment hard case. It's great and there's no give on the device, at all. I always keep it in a case and I've kept the ASF along with front and back glass screen protectors.
The cases I've found were all Sony OEM except for the RoxFit too. If you look around you can find them. Sony has even contacted a case maker so to speak.
My baby BEAST is running strong (don't jinx me please) bit I'm still waiting for the XZU II (2) I'd it every comes out. I ain't NEVER going back to Samsung after being spoiled with Sony's great build quality.
Damn Straight.
Just finally rooted it back in May, I was waiting for KitKat 4.4.4. Now I'll wait for Android L. I can't go back to anything the size of a toy anymore that's definite. But hey that's just me.
And hey guys, grabbing a screen and doing it yourself wouldn't been a hell of a lot cheaper by the way. They're always on eBay plus they cine with pry tools and all. Just sayin'.
The very same happened to me! ..It cost me around $250 to replace the screen..
I keep my XZ in a book-style hard-cover case, and haven't removed the ASF. there are light scratches on it which I can't see in normal use. I do polish the screen a fair amount to remove grease and spots, and that does seem to help reduce scratches.
I was actually considering buying a second XZU because of all the heavy discounting, especially since there seems no sign of a Z2 Ultra or Z Ultra2 model.

Did you try and get it repaired under the warranty? Mine cracked while in my pocket. Doing absolutely nothing at all. I heard others with the same issue, and most, if not all of them got it fixed under warranty. I called mine in and sent it off to Sony. Just waiting on a call back from them on whether or not they will repair under warranty. Most of what I read is that even though Sony says they will contact you they don't. You ship it off and then a few weeks later it is shipped back repaired. Crossing my fingers.

Lol. I couldn't help it.
I got water in it again last week by accident. Was getting ready for work and brushing my teeth with it on the counter by the sink and I splashed water all over it by accident when I was washing my face. Wasn't much but I could see the moisture building up under it so I rice it all day.
Still kicking. However when I power it on I can see a very faint "light" spot under the screen where it isn't well lit. It's only about 5 mm wide but oh well. Doesn't affect the screen when the phone is fully on and running though.
This is the strongest phone I've ever had since my Samsung Infuse «----that phone got the **** beaten out of it!!!!

it's been some sad days for me. as you might have noticed around this forum I loved my ultra. but some days ago it cracked, of no obvious reason. had it in my pocket and when I took it out there was one single crack over the screen. and the display refused to register any kind of touch.
so what is my warning? I removed the anti shatter film, and I think I shouldn't have done that. so my message to everyone considering this, just don't. there's probably a very good reason it's there and why it's glued.
now I got myself a m8 and it's probably the best device out there. the day the successor to the ultra turns up I will go big again.

that sucks. if you do decide to hop back into a z ultra, try running it with dual tempered glass screen protectors. it adds 0.8mm to the overall thickness but adds rigidity, and at 13$ on ebay for each protector, it makes it easy to replace without any huge blows to your pocketbook. :good:

The official Z Ultra wear & tear thread

The ZU is nearing its 2 year birthday, I've had mine for about 8 months now. So far I have been more than happy with it, although I do have to say I'm quite disappointed with the build quality. To be more specific, the paint job of the aluminium/plastic parts. It literally starts to fall off/rub away, whereas I still baby my ZU. This puzzles me and tells me there is nothing brushed about the 'aluminum (is it plastic?), just an ordinary paint job. Also, I've noticed that the material is rather weak, getting dents easily.
What is your experience concerning the wear & tear of this device?
I must agree that the paint of the aluminium parts is rather weak, my 5 months old ZU already got some of it torn. In addition it gets easily bended, when I put my phone on a table or sth the right bottom corner is like 1mm over the surface. And it scratches a lot, especially the back, seriously I'm only putting it in or from the pocket with no keys or anything and it looks like some really angry cat wanted to play with it. However the front is untouched, despite using pencil a lot to navigate, but the oleophobic coating have gone just after a month and because of it random touches appears. Aparr from these, I have no complaints and sorry for my English, not my native lang
Regards
I bought my second Z Ultra today
The screen on my July 2013 ZU broke with my thighs pressure while I was driving. I thought it was safe but it cracked.
Service centre in India wanted Rs. 10400 to replace screen. Grey market Rs. 8000. And it would lose waterproofing after replacement. New Z Ultra is Rs. 18500. So I bought my second ZU today (Feb 15 make)
Last time a Leather cover was given free but this time its DK30 magnetic dock which is good. I will keep check on price for screen and when it drops I will replace my broken ZUs screen and gift it to my wife who is using my old Note 1
My new ZU is on 4.4.4 so I am thinking if I should upgrade to Lollipop or not. I dont like Lollipop. I used it on Moto E2 and it looks crap.
I have two Ultra and both are in mint condition. No scratches, nothing. Not a single noticeable defect. They move along in cases but still. Have not experienced any denting or anything else that would put them in a worse position so I am perfectly happy with the quality.
I think mine is just over a year old now
Tons of scratches on the back, and some on the front (i don't use a case or screen protector)
I've got it running the latest slimkat and I've got no complaints with regards to this OS
Might be moving onto the Samsung s6
I use a book style cover to protect mine, and it's still in quite good condition. I reckon on having to buy a new cover every 4 months as the plastic frame which holds the ZU cracks or breaks, particularly at the corner where the USB socket is present and there's not enough plastic to be strong.
There's a ding on the corner near the USB connector where I dropped it and the case's missing plastic wasn't able to protect it.
I haven't removed the anti-shatter plastic film on front or back. You can't see the fine pattern of scratches on the front when the phone is turned on. Sometimes I clean the screen with a slightly damp towel, and if I rub hard it polishes out the scratches a bit.
Battery life is still good, I don't think it's diminished too much. Sony have always had good battery technology (apart from when they had exploding laptop batteries!).
Overall then my XZU has been a good phone and I've had good value out of it as I use it all the time - I don't have a tablet, I go straight for a laptop if I need to do proper work.
The XZU is my phone, ebook reader, email reader, news reader, podcast & music player, GPS mapper, instant messaging console (G hangouts), shopping assistant (checking prices in shops with barcode scanner), movie viewer (netflix), chromecast controller (netflix) and occasionally acts as a game console.
My backplate cracked so I used the extended warranty I bought with the phone to fix it.
Sony said they couldn't replace it because its discontinued so they bought out my warranty and phone for the total amount I paid. So I got a free ultra basically.
I fixed the backplate myself. I'd really like to fix the faux aluminum edges. They sell them online but u don't want to go in blind and dissect my phone.
Almost mint here (everything is perfect except that the screen ASF is shinning just a little less than the back one) after eight months. I have two cases, the plastic one I use 95% of the time and the Krusell leather book one that I only use when I think I need an extra protection.
USB protective flap
The Z Ultra has one of the best build qualities IMHO:good: . I do not have a scratch, paint job issue etc. Only problem I had after a year of use was the USB protective flap:crying:. Until it was ok, I used to wash the phone whenever it got dirty. Although the usb protective flap is available on ebay, I'm skeptical about opening, fearing it might lose the original build. If anyone has any ideas - please share.
I put screen protector on my replacement XZU when the one I purchased was replaced under warranty. Only problem is stuff building up in the cracks; dirt, dust, etc. builds up in the cracks of the body, and I HATE that. I also have the ? lens attachment case that I leave on all the time, where the two upper corners have cracked off.

I don't think you have to dissect your phone for the USB flap only.
Just buy a new one on eBay and replace it by fitting the string attached into its hole. ?
Edit: to stay in topic, my Ultra is a D1 unit, exchanged like one month later for another brand new under warranty, and it's been y daily driver since.
Paint have come off of 3 out of 4 corners, but other than that, the phone is pristine.
You should see my old GS3 (which now has my mother in law): all plastic-aluminum-painted edges are broken in several points, there's no paint on the on/off button anymore, plastic back cracked... ?
Overall, I'm super happy and my phone is still as elegant as was when I first opened the box. ?
My screen got hairline cracks twice. Sony repaired it free under the warranty. I also purchased 3 off ebay with cracked screens for under $100 each. I got them repaired through sony for free. $$$$

The phones happened to still be under warranty. When Sony asked for the receipt I just showed them the ebay receipt. I didn't think they would repair it, but they did......4 times....?

That's not only luck, you're the luckiest man alive when it comes to warranties...!
I mean, like 8 out of 10 have all kinds of problems with warranty, you're the live exception! ?

the usb flap is one easy replacemnt. just pull out the existing one neatly just a little pressure, make sure to hold the extension plastic that connects to the flap rather than the flap itself. When you get the replacement just insert the new replacement the same way you pulled out the old one:good:

I ordered the flap of eBay and replaced it as per your instructions. Jiffy - my ZU is back to being new. Thanks!
Have been using Z Ultra for almost 1.5 years now but this is my 3rd Ultra. First one was silver color and I used it for about a year and since the paint in the side had peeled off, sold it and bought Lumia 1520 but screen was not upto my satisfaction (Size-wise), so again bought Z ultra Black color. Unfortunately, within a week, my kid threw moto360 and it fell on the ZU screen, it cracked and touch is not working (Thank God, nothing happened to Moto360). I Checked with Sony as it was hardly a week old but since it was physical damage, they said it will cost around $200 to replace the screen
Instead of that, I went and bought a new one for around ˜ $250 during Christmas offer. It has slight scratches on the back as I dont like to use back protection while the front is in pristine condition. Eagerly waiting for p8Max/LeTV Max now, provided it is in my budget!

I'm with you there, don't rule out the Mediapad X2 either There is a plastic film on the back, which you can easily peel off. Try it out You can stick on a tempered glass sheet on there easily afterwards.
