[Q] One click 3G ON and MOBILE DATA ON - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any app out there that can toggle both MOBILE DATA and 3G mode at the same time? I don't like my cell working in 3G mode for talk, but I do like 3G for internet. So I would like to toggle both at the same time. There are some apps which you can program to do stuff like that, in a sequence I think, but I don't remember the names. An specific app for that would be welcome also. When toggle off it would turn off both 3G and mobile DATA.
This is motorola razr d3 XT920 with android 4.1

anyone???

I believe no one has answered your question yet because it doesn't really make much sense in its present form. 3G IS Mobile Data.

That's not quite right. MOBILE DATA means operator (cell phone company) data... it can be 2G, 3G, 4G ... what I mean in my question is a program that would turn on 3G data mode (phone can work both in 2G and 3G, so set it to 3G) AND activate MOBILE DATA (meaning the phone can use the network operator data).

I am quite aware of what Mobile Data is. But your point is that Mobile Data means any 2g/3g/4g and you want to turn on 3G and Mobile Data? How does that make it more clear, exactly? If you have 3G on, then you are using your Mobile Data from your network operator / cell phone company.

i thinj you should turn on both GSM/HCDMA network simulteneously
there is no other option available

There is an option in android to TURN ON/OFF mobile data. There's also an option to choose 2G ONLY, 3G ONLY, 2G/3G AUTO
so they are 2 options, yes.

So you are a little dumb i'm afraid, because it's more than clear at this moment. Perhaps you DON'T WANT to understand just to not accept that you weren't right from the beggining.

Unfortunately no man, no. I'm 100% sure that I've perfectly explained everything. So it's a question of smartness.

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that it isn't perfectly explained.

The point is, what you are wanting to do might make sense in your head, but you are not articulating it in a way anyone is able to figure out. I've asked quite a few friends into phones and no one else has understood either.

[Q] 3G only setting?

on my captivate i used to be able to set the network selection to use auto, 3G only and Edge. i dont see these options in wireless settings, i jsut see an option to select network. is there a way to set it to only use 3G?
No because the phone only shows either E for edge or H+ for 3G or HSDPA.
More than likely you could get an application from the market that lets you switch and see if that works, but.... what's wrong with the way it manages data now?

Well lately ive noticed my H symbol flashing too 3g for a few seconds then back. Im on gingerblur and not sure if its the Rom or what, but its wierd. Has anyone with gingerblur seen the 3g symbol.

Newer phones are using "smart" radio management chips (or something like that). The newly released Thunderbolt is the same way. Which sucks because it was a good tool for battery management
it sometimes switches to edge and i wanted to force it to stay on 3G. my captivate would do the same thing and keeping it on 3G worked fine.
is there any hacks to add this setting?

Lol it switches to edge because you don't have a 3G ssignal; what else is it supposed to do if you don't have it?
You can choose (for throat part) to go down but you can't just magically get a better/faster signal.

That's all well and good, however if you completely lost 3G then it wouldn't be there, even if you have the setting locked.

i understand that it wont give me a better signal. but i use my cell in low reception area and dont want it to constantly switching to edge and back and kill my battery. like i said i've used the captivate with 3g only and never completely lost 3G even with the captivate's crappy radio.
Wcdma only

Lol I think I should state this.
I understand what you're saying and I am not saying I think you're wring; on the contrary, I actually do that as well, however I move mine down to edge when I'm not going to be doing anything data intensive.
I was just stating what I said to inform people, just in case someone thought you could force 3G at ALL times, which isn't possible if you aren't getting 3G in your area.

How do you make the selection stick? I tried a reboot and everything
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
i think you have to redo the setting when you reboot.
Edit: i just notice that it also changes back when i plugged it in overnight. is there a way to keep this setting permanently?
I too am needing to set my phone to connect to Edge only. I have 1 bar at the house when my network type is HSDPA. When connected to HSDPA at the house, with one bar, I constantly get dropped calls or my phone may not ring at all. If the phone decides to connect to Edge, which has a full signal, then everything seems to be a-ok. Most of the time the phone completely disconnects from all networks when it switches from HSDPA to Edge... not cool.
I can not get this sucker to connect to Edge only via setting the preferred network type to WCDMA. The phone will automatically set itself to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) if I manually try to set WCDMA as the preferred network.
Rather annoying to say the least. ATT is the only carrier that has a full signal at the house. That's the only reason I that I signed up with them.

thats because wcdma is 3g only. you need to the GSM option, thats edge.
GSM=edge only
wcdma=3g only
GSM auto=3g or edge, phone decides depending on signal strength

Can you disable mobile data but keep wifi on?

I'm looking to pick up a EVO 3D as my Desire decided to commit suicide.
It'll be a Rogers GSM version and next week I'm flying to Europe for a couple of weeks. With my Desire, running Oxygen, I could disable Mobile Data and keep WiFi on so I wouldn't need to worry about data roaming charges.
Since I don't have the unit yet, I thought I would ask before making the purchase and also because there's no ROMs for it yet that might add more options.
Thanks!
Before u turn wifi on turn mobile data off

That doesn't really make sense.. because if there's a wifi signal, than the device other than the phone should just connect to the wifi router and not the phone.
WiFi tethering, to my understanding, is only beneficial if there's no wifi signal and then you can just use your phone's mobile data to browse the internet.

ATT customer here. Is there a way to set up Roaming on this phone?

Just like the title says. Some areas where i drive i dont have any signal at all, and i was wondering if there is a way to set this phone up to roam on T-mobile or another gsm network if i am outside the coverage area. I know the phone is capable of using t-mobiles edge network according to specs.
It doesnt work if you check the data roaming under mobile network settings?

But seriously, there's not full GSM support. It's an added bonus for Verizon customers, but why the hell are non-Verizon users buying this phone?

You CANNOT achieve data on a GSM network, period. Only UMTS carriers that use a 2100mhz frequency band can.

Disable 4G/H+/HSPDA & force 3G

Hi,
Does anyone know how to enter the secret menu to disable H+/HSPDA and force the phone to use 3G ONLY? I'm on the latest Russian official rom and the codes I've found online do not work anymore.
Anyone managed to do this? thanks.
Type *#*#4636#*#* in phone.apk and then select phone info and choose WCDMA only.
I think this worked on older roms and not on the latest 4.3 one. which firmware are you on?
The option to choose WCDMA or GSM only is in settings, more networks, mobile networks, network mode.

Ok let me explain correctly..When i choose Wcdma, then the phone switches to H and H+ constantly when in low reception places and connection is sometimes lost. That's why I am looking for 3g only since 3g signal is better where I live.

They are definitely not the same thing and it seems you've never used the secret menus to switch from 4g to 3g..Ok lets stop here. I wanted to permanently change the NETWORK BAND to 2100 ONLY. It seems this is not possible on the S3,otherwise people would already have done it like in past samsung phones.

Just to let u know, you could fix the frequency in the secret menu as I did this many times, whereas I don't know the codes to get there as well, they were changed I suppose. In addition the i9300 only got up to H+, no 4G, if I am not wrong, H+ is 3.9G, H is 3.5G.

Still, before such a drastic solution, have you tested different modem (even older ones)?
It can make a huge difference.
