My Note 2 is running the stock Verizon 4.1.2 load. I've stuck with it because when I first got my phone there were no roms that had the Samsung S tools and I didn't want to risk losing that major advantage to this phone. Now that 4.3 is out, how can I update to it without wiping my phone? I've got this thing setup perfect right now and I don't want to lose all my settings by going to a custom rom. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There might be an easy way but I'm pretty sure it's always going to be tedious and you'll have to wipe.
Dirty flash to 4.3 I dunno. First you can always use titanium backup. You can back up messages with sms backup and restore I find it helps if you don't go the titanium backup route.. Anything important on sdcard0 make a copy of and put somewhere like computer just in case.

well to go to 4.3 you have to do the Odin update (not the rom) see beans thread in dev about stock rooted image of 4.3. Then (i havent done it, i like 4.1.2) only then could you flash the stock rooted image like normal. You can always flash roms without wiping (dirty flash) but that of course is at your own discretion and of all the problems that might arise from that.

Ok I think I get it. Honestly, I'm happy with 4.1.2 for now. The only reason I think I would upgrade is if I actually bought one of those gear watches. How do I stop the update notice from popping up?

Hi guys,
I'm debating if I should flash Hyperdrive RLS 14 on my stock slot in safestrap. Would I still flash the modules (I have mk2 )? Also, what would I flash in odin just in case if I encounter some problem? Would I flash the no wipe image or the full wipe image of the stock mk2?
Anndddd! last question... can you restore a backup of a rom slot 1 onto the stock slot?

I don't think you need to flash the kernel modules if you live dangerously and flash over the stock slot. However, it can't hurt to flash the MK2 modules. They're tiny, after all.
If you have problems, you may be able to fix it with a no-wipe. Otherwise, full-wipe will get it back.
If I were you, I'd download them both and verify MD5 sums before flashing over the stock slot. Then it's pretty easy to get something functional back.
Yes, Safestrap will let you flash a backup of slot one over stock. Will it work? Dunno. If you try it, please let us know. :fingers-crossed:

For what it's worth, I've flashed Hyperdrive to the stock slot with no trouble at all. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to do so.

Yes, it'll probably work. For the kind of people who ask this - given how often it's been already asked and answered - it's better to recommend that they spend the time to understand the risk.
I installed Safestrap on my MJ9 build but onto one of the rom slots. Didn't realize this wasn't what you do as it's not listed anywhere in the OP. Now I'm getting to the recovery/continue screen but both options just take me to a black screen where I have to pull my battery. What are my options at this point? Is there anyway to recover my backup I made through recovery? Just getting back to stock 4.3 at this point would be a start.

You need to re-image with ODIN more than likely. If you put your backup on an SD card you may be able to go back to it once you ODIN, root, install safestrap and install the recovery again. Good luck!
Requesting help. I am not a noob by any means, I have installed custom roms many times, and rooted many phones, and installed and used safestrap on several phones, but I cannot get ANY custom rom to install properly on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, which is (was) rooted, with Safestrap 3.72, and MK2 firmware.
I was running the stock 4.3/mk2 firmware, with the latest busybox and supersu, and the latest safestrap, and safe root installed. I was able to successfully root the phone, and install safestrap, but even when I created a rom slot, gave it a name, wiped it completely, and then try to install one of the many 4.3/mk2 "Safe" roms, no rom will boot, once installed. It is so frustrating! I read somewhere that with the Verizon S4, and MK2 firmware, you could only install a rom in the stock rom slot, so I tried that, and now safestrap is gone, and the phone boots to a light blue screen with little green checkmarks. So I'm in the process of downloading the original MK2 firmware from Samsung and using Odin to restore. Anybody have any ideas? I'm thinking of quickly getting rid of the S4 while it still has some value.

3.72 is for 4.4 KitKat and was made for the AT&T version of the S4, therefore, you are not able to create slots. You would need to install 3.71 and only flash 4.3 based roms. If you want 4.4 based roms you need to upgrade to NC5 and install 3.72, but you are only able to flash to the stock side.
There's plenty of info for you to read in the General section.

Thank you for your response. Actually what I failed to mention is I did have 3.71 installed first, and I had the exact same problem. So it's not an issue with the safestrap version. And I have tried about 12 different ROMs. Including BajaROM-S4-Release-v-2.2 and BoneStock4.3_S4v2.1. As I said, I'm not a newbie at all, and I'm not about to hunt and peck for information again (which is what I've been doing for two days now). I wouldn't have asked for help if I had been successful in my search.
I have never had an issue installing any safestrap compatible rom...3.72 is strictly for android 4.4 and no rom slots...so no way you would ever get a rom installed using 3.72 on MK2 base build. As for 3.71...never heard of any issue with SS compatible roms for 3.71 not installing right. Really difficult to figure out what you are doing wrong from what you are giving us...

basically, I'd follow this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2763834
I'd go back to MK2, root, BB, SS 3.71. Then go up to NC5 ROMs with SS 3.72. Wiping EVERYTHING along the way, system included, not just factory reset
Similar Issue
I not a noob either im very familiar with how this whole operation works.
I have a very similar issue as well I'm (unable to flash roms including my own recovery). I'm 100% knowledgeable on CM, but when it comes to Safestrap or TWRP base Recoveries I'm far from noon but not an expert so to say... Here's my issue. I have the NC5 firmware and once had the Hyperdrive RLS17.1 KK S4 Final.zip... I went back to the I545VRUFNC5-Stock-Root-Deodex.zip.... I recently attempted to download another ROM, (based on the same firmware of course) as soon as I attempted to flash it (which only took about 1 min and didn't work) I figured something was wrong. So I just decided to go back to my recovery that I've made a few moments ago. When I tried to do that. The msg " E: Unable to mount '/system' " appeared.
Now I've notice since then Wiping and Flashing return the same results.
There is no longer an OS on my S4... I can not Mount the System.
So I believe in stuck in Safestrap 3.72.
(Please let me know what other info you need, I spent the last couple of days trying to figure this out on my own, so far I'm losing the battle)
Please help guys.

I only just saw these posts, I have not been on here for a week or so but if you are still having issues... As far as what went wrong to begin with, did you factory reset/advanvanced wipe all but the internal sd before flashing? Are you only installing into the 'stock' slot on SafeStrap? As far as the fix, if you are suck in Safestrap, you will need to boot into recovery mode, if possible and wipe/factory reset and then boot into download mode and flash one of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172 in Odin.

Thanks a lot man. The is has been resolved...
I had to Odin the stock NC5 (exactly what you've just mentioned in your response.) I had to flash it twice actually. The first time only took about 3 mins. I then tried to restore my backup, but during the time it restari SS (when the flash was approximately 90% done) I then went to restart the system and then received the notice "No OS loaded). So I wiped all except my SD card and then I just thought to myself to just try and Odin the stock NC5 one more time (it was getting late and I was about to give up). On the 2nd attempi it took almost 3 times the length as before (15-20mins) when it finished, it bypass the " unlock Samsung screen " and displayed the stock splash screen and audio then the Verizon screen. ( I was happier the a crackhead at a free crack-give-away)...
So I want to thank you for responding, I was determined not to give up,, and it was really close before I was about throw in the towel... Thanks a bunch. (You're response was exactly what I did last night)... I was about to update my issue as soon as I fixed it las night was it was so late and I was really sleepy, then I wake up to your message with the exact fix.
Thanks a lot ☺☺
HI guys I'm new here. I really appreciate the site and the developers here. I've done quite a bit of searching and I am unable to find a way to go into recovery to flash a custom rom for my galaxy s4 SCH-I545 with build number NC5. Is there anyway to do this yet? My phone is rooted but I just don't like some of the laggyness that I get and want to speed it up a bit. Anything i can do?
Thanks

First of All you have posted in the wrong section u should post questions in Questions section.. As for your question the build NC5 can not be bootloader unlocked .. so u have only a one choice thats Safestrap u can search for it dont have links right now.. and then u can have some custom roms not aosp but touchwiz based thats how we r managing ... LOL .
thanks for the reply. isn't safestrap not very reliable? I thought it usually doesn't work and it will give you errors...

Safestrap works and works brilliantly. As a matter of fact, I flashed a rom that I liked and after a few weeks of use with no errors I backed up the stock slot and the rom slot. Then I rebooted into safestrap, factory reset the stock slot and flashed the rom from the rom slot to the stock location. No problems at all. Now I'm just looking for a blacked out stock dialer that will work with 4.4.2.
HELP!
Ok so I downloaded terminal emulator and got safestrap working.
I backed everything to my SD then accidentally (don't ask me how) installed hyperdrive rs2 before wiping. I immediately wiped after that with a factory wipe. I rebooted and it got stuck on the booting 'samsung galaxy s4' screen. It would stay there no matter how long i waited. I booted into recovery (not the safestrap version but the factory recovery) and wiped data and cache and rebooted. Now it is permanently stuck at the "samsung galaxy s4' loading screen. I am freaking out! Please tell me there is a way to undo this. I've taken the battery out and tried wiping again and again but it always freezes on the boot screen. Can somebody please point me in the right direction?

Is there version of hyperdrive that is most reliable without bugs?
Odin back to stock nc5 and start over.
This rom will work on nc5. Requires safestrap and some hacks (to get wifi going especially), but is about as close as you're going to get to aosp with the locked bootloader.
I've played with hyperdrive but wasn't too thrilled. It seemed sluggish on two phones and at 1.8GB download size, wasn't exactly 'lite'. Some like all the options, I just wanted a clean slate to configure as needed.
The above GPE rom will need xposed framework, gravity box, and a few other mods, but the end result is super lightweight with just enough mods to satisfy

Choose the full wipe image. If you have issues downloading, use a different browser, computer, etc. I've never had issues downloading from androidfilehost. This image will restore you to 100% stock nc5 state.

It's customizable in the sense that you're starting with an extremely clean slate you can leave it native android or add customization modules (via xposed framework for example) as your needs require. It's also much fast than TW based roms. Weighs in at 1/3 the size too. Gravitybox has all sorts of mods you can do with the status bar. Best advice is to try it for a few days. If you don't like it, try something else.

Thanks for your help. I successfully got hyperdrive installed. My only gripe is that after flashing, it seems to take up a huge mount of storage space on the system - 7.12GB!!!! Considering the actual rom is only around 2gb I didn't think it would take up any more space than that, but I guess I was wrong. Any idea how much space the google play edition takes up on the system storage in comparison?
