Hey! Right now I have a Galaxy Note 2 and I was just curious if I should get an S4. I have a little over a year before I can upgrade again and I'm finding Galaxy S4s on Craigslist in my area around $250-$350, which isn't all that much more than a regular upgrade. I like the higher resolution display they have and the better camera, but I'm not sure if that would be the only thing I'd be getting out of it. Also, since there are developer edition S4s, I figured I could easily flash it to Kitkat, such as CM11, and expect no bugs or glitches. What's everyone's thought on going from a note 2 to an S4? Worth the money? Do you think it'd hold me off another year?

Well if the things listed here justify spending the cash I'd say go for it!

I love mine. But definitely get a dev or mdk version. And I'd feel safer getting one off swappa myself.

That link helped a lot bro. Thanks! It does seem that the S4 has some nice hardware upgrades from my note 2. It has camera stabilization too! That may explain why my pictures get blurry quite often. You may see me in the GS4 forums soon!!!

And I'll say the camera on the S4 is really awesome. The note 2 is still a beast of a phone though. Lot of development for it also. Good luck whichever way you go!

if you can't get a dev edition or a retail edition on mdk don't bother. on anything after mdk there is no custom recovery, only safestrap. and even on mdk there is no unlocked bootloader, just a loki exploit that allows us to flash twrp.
the phone is a great phone, but if you are looking to mod it, you have very few choices with the s4 unfortunately.

....to go from a DNA to a Note 2 and now possibly back to a DNA. I know certain users around here might drop their jaws by looking at this post based on my posting history, but I'm considering it.
I must confess, I'm a phone whore. I get bored pretty easily and always like to try new phones, etc. I had a S3 before my original DNA purchase and then I returned that for a Note 2. But now I'm kind of bored with the Note 2. I think since I had the S3 before it, I'm kind of bored with Touchwiz.
There is a guy from my local Craigslist who is willing to do a trade of the phones and he will throw $50 on top. My phone and his are both in mint condition with all of the original accessories, etc. What do you guys think of the deal?
Also, before I consider it any further, I have a few questions:
1. He said the new OTA is installed and it's not rooted. From the quick reading here, there currently isn't a root method for the new OTA. Will there be any time soon?
2. I've seen both sides of this, but will Sense 5 be a realistic possibility? Whether official or unofficial, it doesn't matter to me.
3. Do any of the current custom ROM's make the home screen scrolling any faster? This is one of the biggest ones for me. I just didn't like the slow animations while scrolling the home screens. And please refrain from saying "just install Nova". I know that would help, but I'm talking about Sense.
I need to make a decision by tomorrow, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Convince me! LOL.
Thanks!

You are correct in the fact that you are currently unable to root it. And no one knows when a new root method will come out. It could be tomorrow, it could be next month, it could be never.

Unofficially, of course. Officially, its likely, but not certain. Someone, nits iirc, said it's been built and in the hands of verizon already. So that's good news.

No. And I'm pretty sure it's not easy to do that. And to be honest if it really bothers you that much just install a 3rd party launcher.

I know, not helpful..... well, with the OTA installed on it, he should throw $100 on it because that just made it so that you're stuck for now. If he puts in $100, go for it hahah

I'm the same way I'm known as the guy with a new phone lol. I own the DNA which my gf has right now we switched and I want it back and only play with the note 2 where I work since I sell phones and I like it too just not a touchwize person bit would like to personally use cm10 or 10.1 the DNA and note 2 r set up right next to each other and the DNA gets brighter. I like both screens. Depends to me if u want a huge phone or a phablet
Also. If you are like me I'm around a charger quite often so battery doesn't bother me. The DNA did pretty well to last the day on decent use but my usage varies

If it's unlocked then I would get it, if not I would pass.
I believe it will get Sense5.
As for roms making the home screen scrolling faster, idk since I use Nova, but Supercharged Hatka has a lot of speed tweaks.
If I were you I would wait for the S4 since you already tried the DNA and would be tempted to get the S4 when it comes out.

I prefer the size, feel, appearance and screen type. I have not used an LCD in awhile but I really like it at this point.
The note 2 felt like I had a mini tablet in my pocket and this feels like a normal phone.
The grippy material HTC used for the back of the phone makes it very easy to hold in one hand and the shiny plastic on the Note 2 made it difficult.
The shiny appearance of the note 2 was very flashy and it did look enormous compared to most phones where the DNA comes across as a normal ish phone size.
While the battery life on the note 2 was better than the DNA, I've been getting an average of 15-20 hrs per charge with what I would describe as moderately heavy usage.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Theres nothing better with the DNA. Screen is very subjective (LCD vs amoled). Size is also, depends on person( 1 handed use with note 2/no skinny jeans here) .
I believe with the newest its there is not a way to root/soff yet. And hopefully the devs will provide sense 5. From what I hear Verizon isn't the quickest at releasing updates but that's why we have xda.
Scrolling has gotten better if comparing to intial release.
Personally my gadget addiction needed to try something else. Im currently revisiting the dna for the moment and no real complaints.
My current issue is with development(many slightly tweaked stock roms). Waiting to see what happens after HTC one release.
Samsung devices out of the box are slightly better. You can see all the little things they added when switching to HTC.
Verizon needs to stop touching things. Everything they added is extremely annoying. I'm not extremely hype about sense 5, all I see is a rss reader. Its very clean looking though.

The dna is gsm unlocked straight from Verizon. It means you can pop an at&t(or any other gsm carrier) sim in it and it will work. It has no relation to bootloader unlocking.

I think he would like it unlocked so he can mod it if he wants to, and he probably will.
Be sure you're okay with sense because you'll be using stock wayyyy more than you are used to on other phones. That's the biggest thing you'll notice - while there is good dev support, its nothing compared to n2/gs3 support. You're options will be limited and hence, you'll be using sense (or sense based roms) a whole lot. I switched back for the same reason, touchwiz gets boring quick. I am 90% confident that we'll be getting sense 5.0 so that's good. It may not be for another 2-3 months though Others and yourself are correct in saying that until superCID gets worked out for 2.x.x updates, you (we) are SOL and stuck with stock until further implementation. Because of this, again, hope you're okay with stock
Since the bootloader is still unlockable, what are your thoughts on the continual development of ROMS, etc on the S4 ? Do you feel that future of S4 development is doomed? I recently just purchased my s4 and was one of the lucky few who were able to unlock theirrs prior to the mess. However, now I feel that I might have regretted buying one.
Thoughts?

I think you meant that you rooted it and got custom recovery installed on the pre-updated MDK. No one has unlocked the bootloader on any S4 came with it locked.
There never was an unlocked bootloader save for the developer edition only available direct from Samsung.
Development for the i545 is far from dying if you look through the forum. The fact that the bounty for root and recovery on ME7 is several thousand dollars should be telling.

Even if people start breaking/losing their MDK phones, there's still GPE and Dev versions. Should still see development for those, which will be of help to us MDK folks as well.
If you end up having to exchange it, and you get an ME7, could always sell it and put that cash towards a Dev edition as well.

GE phones are fine and dandy but none exist for VZW, just like VZW has no nexus phones, because they want complete control over the devices and the software.
I currently have an S3 and when my contracts runs out I will either move to another carrier and buy GE phones or buy Dev phones off contract for verizon, but I'm more inclined to go elsewhere and go with GE phones.
When it's announced(hopefully) I'll be ordering my developer edition note 3. As far as the gs4 goes, I only know of 1 developer who stopped developing for the gs4. No one else who has started has quit.

I've had similar concerns. I took it as a reason to learn some of this stuff on my own. I've been building cm 10.2 from source to start. That said, I'm less concerned about development now but I will continue to learn how to do as much as I can on my own. I just hope I never physically damage the phone beyond usability. This is the first time I've had a case on a phone. I hate cases but it's worth reducing the chance of a cracked screen.

Yeah I don't know that One design just doesn't scale well. I mean look at a One compared to a Moto X, it's a joke. They have the same screen size but the Moto X is almost the same size as an iPhone while the One is bigger than our phone. So the BoomSound speakers plus the 5.9" screen means it massive. It only has a Snapdragon 600 after all these devices are coming out with the 800. It loses OIS, which ruins the whole point of their "UltraPixels" with the larger light aperture, in favor of a fingerprint reader which so far hasn't been reviewed very well. Apple integrated the reader into the experience of the iPhone by putting it right on the home button, the One Max makes the same mistake as the Motorola Atrix. Furthermore, it doesn't even retain the best part of the One design, the unibody aluminum shell. It features a plastic ring around the phone like our S4 as well as an apparently spotty removable back that doesn't even feature a removable battery. Very disappointed in the One Max.
Hi,
Im just asking if someone knows if Samsung still support our devices for updates or 4.1.2 was the last one

My hopes aren't up on that one. I've got a BIG itch for a new phone and no better time than day after Xmas, but what to get?
Would really love to get Mega 6.3

Yes, 4.1.2 was the last update from Samsung. It's too bad that they abandoned this device. Every now and then I send an email to Samsung bugging them when will they next release an update for our phone but get the same claptrap back.

The price is a lot more incredible too. Problem with both is, the bootloader issue. They are working on a safety strap to work with or as a recovery. I think N3 is closer to that then the Mega. But he Mega is made to be more affordable. It has already been approved for 4.3 upgrade, 4.4 ?????? We'll have to see. Just 2 weeks ago att had it for $49 online.

buying the note 3 is like going out and buying an ip5s, your stuck with what the manufacture wants you to have
Samsung can suck a hole in a wall and leave android for all i care now days, they peaked with the note 2 and now are on the hill downwards with apple
with that said, 4.1.2 is the last stop for the i717, we are way over the 18 month period and were lucky to even get 4.1.2
the Knox security is a hell of a mess from Samsung for sure , but I still got hope that will not affect the development for this device. Maybe more time but not the end . all this mess for more money in theirs pockets ..

(said with a Scottish accent) "look at the size of it, its like an orange on a toothpack"
I'm stuck on which device I should opt to get. I've become accustomed to the freakingly large screen the note offers. Anything smaller and I might flip...The mega doesn't really interest me that much...I really have no idea what to get. I however might jump ship and get the N5. Its only 349/399

I upgraded to a Note 3 and its a huge improvement from the note 1 , the pen works really well and find I use it a lot more than I did before. Go to your carrier of choice and play with one before picking something you are unsure of. l rooted mine no problem (Im not a big fan of Roms because they always caused problems after 4.2.2 For me anyways ... something always broke.) My mission now is to find the best functioning kitkat rom as it was meant to be buiIt for aging phones that dont have the impressive specs of a newly released flagship device. l almost got a Xperia Z1 because of my tablet Z but didnt like the bezels top and bottom, (AND NO PEN). Awesome job on the pen I cant stress how much better it is?

I have an S4...but I want a note 1 as a back up. I had the Note 2 but I sold it for lots of loot. The S4 is brilliant but the locked bootloader has cramped the phone to the point of constipation as if you got a S4 on MF 4.2.2 firmware or MK 4.3 firmware the boot loader is super locked. They even killed the service menu. So Im selling my S4 for cash + the note 1 for temp use until I see what I want next. Samsung is the only phone company left with dual storage. LG has the Optimus G pro with 32GB and an SD card slot, but with the specs on that phone they will never see 4.2.2 on it.. And it's a beast of a phone...so I will take this Note 1 + $250 and call it a day until February

Do it. There is nothing better than getting a Nexus. I jumped to Nexus 4 from the Note about 10 months ago, and just upgraded to a Nexus 5. The developer support on a Nexus is amazing. I could have easily stuck with the Nexus 4 for another year, but the lack of LTE was bothering me a bit. A Nexus phone is pure gold. By the time the Note got to be the age that my Nexus 4 was at, I was tired of it. Don't give another dime to Samsung, who will spend it on rewriting perfectly good android code into buggy bloatware. Don't let the lack of sd card bother you. I have lived with 16 GB storage without any issue, and Nexus 5 comes in 32 GB too, for just $50 more.

Looks like we should be getting some Kit Kat action even sooner then expected!
Edit: After looking over at the main Note 3 page it looks like I'm way late to the party...

Doesn't mean too much. By the time Verizon pushes it out it'll be April or May.

I checked the Note 3 forum and it appears right now there is no way to root without tripping KNOX. It is also not possible to go back to 4.3 due to the bootloader. So we might not be missing out on much yet, as I'd rather have root and warranty than 4.4.

Actually..... Sammy stated it was gonna have KK released on all carriers (including ALL US carriers) by end of January. And yes, that includes VZW. Its been in testing for a little bit now.
EDIT - for Note 3 and S4 that is
going to keep things streamlined folks...please use this thread here ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607029
