The Tether Hack and Tether hack with WiFi notification should work on stock rooted and stock de-odex I545VRUAMDK based ROMS.
If your rocking a custom ROM check with your ROM dev for changes to framework-res.apk BEFORE flashing this.
The other two mods, Remove E911 Icons, and disable Ongoing WiFi Noticiation NEED a de-odex ROM.
The orginal "Tether Hack doesnt always kill the WiFi Notification so I rebuilt the mods using a different method.
EDIT: One of the mods were removed because it caused GPS Issues.
Mods / Features
Tether Hack.zip
Adds Free tether for everyone
Removes ongoing WiFi Notification in status bar
Thanks to shoman94 for his help re-compiling framework-res. He has a good tut HERE!
Tether Hack - With WiFi Notification.zip
Adds free tether for everyone.
Keeps WiFi notification in the status bar
Remove E911 Icon.zip
Removed that hideous GPS icon in the status bar
Must be de-odex!
Make a back up before flashing!
You can use this Mod in your ROM or however you see fit just give credit please.
Thanks!

I am curious how you got this to complie and run. I tried removing com.samsung.sgp and the line below it from my framework-res. I even added the + to the different files that needed it. When I would recompile my phone would just sit at the verizon logo.
Did you do anything else besides adding the + to the layout lines?

Nice job! I see it removes the Wifi notification, does it add a toggle for the wifi with all the other toggles?

After posting the exact same question in the Q&A thread, I found it was because I needed to clear the cache/dalvik cache (maybe one or the other, but I did both).
I was able to successfully boot after doing so.

Compression has to be set to "None" on Samsung framework-res.apk
Thanks for posting this, both of the mods work great.
Just a quick question. With regards to the Tether Hack, how does this compare to apps like pdanet which bypass the subscription check but still seem to use the stock Wifi Hotspot? I don't know what exactly is happening behind the scenes with these other apps, if they do anything other than bypass the check. As an unlimited data user, is it "safer" to use pdanet or the other apps, or are you really just doing the same thing they provide without the need for another app?
Thanks again.
i already am using the widget to bypass the subscription check, just curious exactly what this tether hack does. also does it allow for USB tethering as well
nice mod!

I never used one of those apps so I cant honestly tell you what they do. However I can tell you what this one does...
It bypasses the Samsung tether check and just turns it on.
I have used this mod for quite some time and never had any one complain about being busted by Big Red... However AT&T and this mod will get you busted if you use it excessively.

It hacks the tether feature samsung put in the ROM to call upon another app to verify the subscription.
So instead of
1. Tether app start
2. Call App to check subscription
3. Return results to tether app
4. Tether... Or not Tether...
It goes...
1. Start tether app
4. Tether.
Steps 2 and 3 are removed from the framework of the ROM
Yes on USB and if I wasnt so damned lazy I could even do Bluetooth... But this is good enough for 99.99% of the people. Who the hell uses Bluetooth anyways... Damn kids and there fads

These apps are using something momentary (IE: The hack has to happen every time you push the *Big Friendly Button*) to bypass the check; I'm not sure what and I haven't had the opportunity/need to go digging into the how. I use Widgetsoid and it does the same thing.
This hack is permanent; it happens when you flash and doesn't require anything afterward. It allows you to use the included app on the phone without having to download any free apps that might have limits or ads and there's no paid version (FoxFi, for example). It means there are less "moving parts" involved, and theoretically, there are fewer things that could go wrong.
As for is one "safer" than the other...I'll assume you mean any less likely to get you in trouble...and the answer is no. They're achieving the same thing through different methods; one's just a bit "cleaner" than the others.
EDIT: Didn't see Scott's post...damn pages. Still relevant, I think.

It will work fine. We used the exact same method to override the WiFi notification.
However after further testing... If you download something it will come back.

Is it possible to implent the smart stay notification removal hack. Currently, I have to choose between the RWC95 hack (ongoing wifi and smart stay) and yours. I'm having issues running the two hacks together as it seems some stuff cancels one another out. Could you possibly help and talk with him (RWC95) about merging your two hacks together? That'd be great
when you say this works on stock rooted i assume you mean it can work on odex roms right?

I have no desire to remove that icon. If someone needs my help with something (which rwc95 does not, as I have worked on stuff with him before, he knows what he is doing) they can reach out to me.

Right this is just a resource hack. Framework-res does not have any smali code and subsequently no dex or odex files.
Which app are you using to tether?
Hi Scott,
Thanks for developing the Clean Rom!
I've used your clean rom on the S3 and the S4 and I must admit it's some good stuff you've developed.
I've installed this tether hack but after reading this thread, I'm not clear on what app you are using to tether?
Is it the mobile hotspot app from the Big Red?
Or does Samsung have their own separate tethering app?
I know it's a newbie question, but any info would be appreciated.
Thanks again!
Where is the tether app icon? I can't find it anywhere...
Is this the TrevE tether?
What exactly does this do since we already have a hot spot with this phone?
Also, when flashing do the cache's need to be wiped?

Hey Guys, over the weekend I took the 23C OTA, not realizing VZW still hadn't worked out the WiFi Sync kinks... so here is where I am stuck. My company uses an application called Good for Enterprise to push work email to our personal phones. It is a requirement that I have email on my phone. Unfortunately, Good checks for root and we cannot have rooted phones. There were workarounds with Kit Kat with Xposed and a Good Patcher, but Lollipop and this patcher are not compatible yet.
I rooted my phone on 23C and set up the script to disable IPV6 on my phone (which I think is the same script that SkyDragon and Jasmine runs), which solved my WiFi sync issues. So then I did a full unroot through SU so I would be compliant with work and then the script ceases to work (which I suspected it would). So sorry for the long drawn out background of the situation, but my question is: Am I stuck reverting to Kit Kat, or is there some miraculous way to get the WiFi syncing working without root access? Thanks guys!
Well, there's the xposed module "Rootcloak" it says that it may work with your companies email thing, but the dev can't test it so he isn't sure. I'd say that could be a good choice, but again I'm not totally sure what you want to do with your phone so it may not be a good choice.
Anyways, hope I could be of help

Hi 6NomoN6, Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, we've already tried Rootcloak and it doesn't work either. I'm not even that concerned about root, I just want to have a functioning phone. The WiFi sync issue is not acceptable. I cannot believe VZW pushed out this update.
My sync issue was only with google email not others

Mine seemed to be with all Google Play Services... I use hangouts a lot of messaging and it wasn't syncing. I went back to 10B until this is all sorted out.
Is the Google not syncing on WiFi problem a Google Play Services issue?
It's been 2 years since I've rooted my last device. I'm a bit out of the loop with rooting. So what's your guys opinions on some good rooted apps?
Maybe there's some good apps for cosmetic changes? I've tried a few launchers, but they all feel very fake and tacky.
Of course I should learn how to use Titanium backup, I'd say that is a pretty common apps that rooted users use, eh?
Thanks ahead of time!

My favorite is blackmart. Tons of paid apps for free. Just google it and you can find their homepage to download it from. Other than that I usually only root to get free tethering but I found a way to get that without rooting this time so looks like I'll be holding off until we have some stable ROM's.
Thread moved to proper forum.
First thing I do is to block Ads, and I use AdAway:

Yup. Not sure about YouTube (I think you need Xposed for that) but definitely Ads that appear all around some apps. In certain apps, the Ads totally disappear cleanly but in others they leave a black bar behind. That's depending on how the apps are designed.

Last time I checked out Cydia, it was for downloading paid apps for free. Correct me if I'm wrong.
However, Xposed is not for that. It's for making specific customizations to your ROM, as if it were cooked right into it. You need Xposed framework and specific modules for it to work.
Also, you're right about Samsung devices not being supported yet (work in progress).

i was searching around xda and found this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/general/lollipop-hotspot-root-flashing-t3048163 ... follow the steps and you can unlock the native tethering app that comes in the settings of android. i have the unlimited everything plan with sprint so i have unlimited, never metered data. and with this workaround, i dont even have to root my phone to get free tethering, which i sorely need. i use on average 75gb of data a month so there is no way im ever leaving this plan lol

Aw man that sucks. I had to leave ATT because even though i was grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, they would start metering me after 3gbs and i just couldnt stand it.
Ya they are being sued by FCC, lets see what happens, they start throttling at 5gig these days, but would surprise me if they did it at 3gig, they are not transparent at all

i just want to make sure i am using it the right way.
is it good to use it on snapchat, facebook messenger and facebook. is it good to always greenify them when locking my device. and say i get messages on facebook messenger from time to time, it wont drain my battery if it keeps waking the app? i'm just not sure if i am doing it the right way hehe. is there something else i should do with it. (i have the g gcm push feature on) apps are auto hibernated by greenify anyways so maby it is just as it should? im using servicely also.

The short descriptions on the options speak for themselves. Boost is the 'best' choice but requires Xposed framework. Otherwise go with one of the other two options depending if your device is rooted.

Hello everybody!
Ever since I bought this phone (Pixel 6) the assistant has never worked. Considering this is a Google phone, one would assume it would work no issue but joke is firmly on me!
I have been researching and have seen mixed messages from many websites where some users have the issue, others no issue! I have seen some people say to reinstall the Google App (tried this, didn't work) and other people said to completely restore to factory which I don't want to considering the hassle of getting everything back in order.
Does anybody have anything else I might be able to try?
Thanks in advance

I did open it just now and tried to use the assistant with it and it didn't crash immediately. You might be on to something.
Maybe I am missing something though, if it was a browser based issue, why would that impact my ability to open say Spotify or "check the weather".
Maybe it's some other Google system/service I am after breaking?

I have tried the Brave browser a few months back for a short time.
Side note; I use Brave browser on my pc, because edge gives me trouble with networking for my smarthome devices and nas.
I am also having this issue after rooting and modding a few things. Reverted the changes but I am still having the issue. Updating Google App and downloading Google Assistant doesn't seem to do the trick either. Anyone with some insight into the issue know what's going on?
quick update - I installed Alexa to see if that would work, and it too doesn't appear to like me
Starting to think its a service based issue instead of a particular app.
Anybody who has guidance please chime in
Are you completely stock, no custom rom, kernel, Magisk mods?
Alexa will increase your four letter vocabulary to a new level.
Do you have the assistant set to more than 1 language? For me having the assistant set to English and dutch causes it to constantly.
I figured out for me it was dozing google play services
so, update on this. Firstly, I only have it using the one language.
Secondly, I got an update yesterday for the google app from the playstore and it appears to have fixed whatever the problem was!
