[solved]Root installed, but can't replace 3e with cwm - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
Im kinda new with root, cwm and roms. But I've stucked in with one thing. I've got i9100 intl. I've wanted to install CM10.2 but, anytime i try to replace 3e with cwm, after reboot still 3e starts, so I can't go any further. In mid 2013 I've replaced old 4.0.4ICS with noncarrier XEO (Poland) 4.1.2 Samsung orginal. I've used Odin, and everything works fine. But now I would like to learn more about roms, but can't, couse cwm won't replace orginal 3e. If I did something wrong, please point me.

install dorimanx kernel v8.43 via odin

Ok. I will try, but what if I would like to test cm? Is this mean I can't install cwm recovery at all? Im new, like I've wrote, but not new in Linux. I thought that, if I can install cwm recovery that I would install anyrom I wish. But I will try with dorinmanx anyway.
//edit
Kernel installed successfully. Does it mean, I can try to install cwm recovery or CM? How to remove yellow triangle which appears on the start?

Along with the kernel you should have a custom recovery installed, now, and proceed to mount any custom ROM you want to try out.

Q4: When I turn my phone on, I see a yellow triangle. What is it and how can I get rid of it?
It will appear if you have flashed a non-official kernel from download mode. If you flash kernels using CWM recovery, Mobile Odin etc. you won't get this yellow triangle.
The easiest ways to remove it are to use the app Triangle Away OR use a USB Jig.

Thanks for help. Installing dorimanx kernel with cwm gives me oportunity to test CM and many others. Actually I need to export/import full contact list and text messages from stock to CM or any other rom and lastly be happy to use random rom.
Thanks again.

You will need a rooted Galaxy S2 to install all ROM/kernels.
NOTE: PLEASE ONLY INSTALL ROMS INTENDED FOR YOUR VERSION OF Galaxy S2! Otherwise you WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE and I will not be responsible! ALL ROMs on this site are ONLY for Verizon Galaxy S2!

I wouldn't have tried this as your phone is i9100P, although I know the difference isn't that big.
Also, was your phone rooted? It had to have been rooted beforehand.

Yes, that should help. Btw what version you are downloading? 4.0.3 or 4.0.4?

I am downloading 4.0.3 from here: devsrom4android.blogspot (DOT)co (DOT) uk/2012/06/i9100pxxlph-o2-uk-samsung-galaxy-s2-gt.html
4.0.3 is what I previously had, and I believe that was the exact firmware I had on the phone (o2 NFC version)

That's your problem. You were on 4.0.3, which is ICS.
The instructions at galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-rooted-galaxy-s2-i9100/ don't specify, but they are for Gingerbread ONLY. The recovery kernel contained within that zip package is ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.1.4, which is for Gingerbread.
This thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693) is the updated version of that recovery kernel for ICS.
You don't have to flash the full firmware, just flash a kernel that is meant to work with ICS and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice - but i already have the stock ROM on an SD card so i think i will flash this. Problem is i cannot get CWM to read from the external SD card, so i cannot locate the zip and install it - help?
EDIT: if i install the kernel you gave me the link to ([KERNEL][ICS] ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4) , will it remove the root access i had?
EDIT 2: I have just flashed the kernel via odin, and it finally got past the screen with the yellow triangle! However, it is now stuck on the second screen which shows the 'S' logo with the words 'Samsung Galaxy SII' under it. Any more ideas?

Can you boot to recovery? If so, you can try a factory reset/wipe data. You'll lose all your data, (not counting pictures/media) but at this point, do you have anything to lose?

Well, now I'd say you need to flash a full firmware. You said you downloaded I9100PXXLPH from here? Should work. But you'll no longer be rooted, and you won't have CWM recovery.
How did you get into this in the first place? You wanted CWM recovery?

I will be sure to try that, and basically earlier today i rooted it successfully, and then i had to get CWM onto it so i could start flashing new ROMs etc, and i tried installing CWM via that method that has now caused all of this
Never the less i will try your suggestion, so should i basically mount usb from CWM, then copy the firmware over to the phone, unmount, and then wipe, and then flash it finally?
EDIT: it wont allow me to mount USB in CWM
can i just flash the ZIP using odin in download mode, or does it have to be a .tar file?

No. That download is for a package that must be flashed while the phone is in download mode. That will require you to use a computer, and a flashing tool, such as Odin or Heimdall.

Well I think Chainfire's CF-Root kernels (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) are not for i9100P, so not sure if he can achieve permanent CWM recovery. Anyway if he don't plan to flash every hour new ROM he should be fine with latest temporary CWM 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223 although will ask Phil about compatibility.

Don't panic,follow the steps:
1-Root e recovery with cf-root
2-download rom ( zip.packages) If you see any error messages or the procedure stops, then the packet of cooked rom may be corrupted.
Re-download and re-install from the beginning..
3-If the first boot takes more than 20-30 minutes, manually restart the phone by removing the battery or by pressing and holding for 10 seconds the power button.
If the problem persists, perform a hard reset .
4-If the phone restarts all the time, back in recovery mode and re-install, also performing the hard reset.
5-If your phone will not boot up, go into download mode and try to install a firmware via odin, performing a hard reset.
i tried installing a stock rom then flashing over that i have installed a ics one and jb one...didn't work...the problem is not with the booting itself but with the flashing like i said every rom flashes in like 5 seconds...it tells me it;s done and everything went fine but when i reboot i can't get past the samsung logo before the boot animation, so practically the rom doesn't flash...i dont know why...odin works great....but i can't flash through CWM. I wanted to try TWRP recovery also but i can't seem to find one for the international version of SGS3...Please help:crying:
Flash via recovery requires CF Root ,
ROOT

as you can see there is no error in the log, so i can't do nothing.

stuck after cwm flushing

Im stuck after i flushed cwm5 through odin! i have just the yellow triangle but nothing after that! im able to get into recovery mode (the blue one) and download mode also but nothing else!
Flash latest official firmware, http://samfirmware.com/ via Odin and will be OK.
After that remember to use safe kernel.
No need to flash stock firmware since you can enter recovery. Simply flash a zip version of a custom kernel like siyah or dorimanx. That comes with a custom version of CWM recovery and should get rid of the softbrick. Thereafter you can flash a custom ROM or stick to stock based on what you want.

I don't really understand why did you need to flash recovery, while it comes updated with the kernel. Basically you need yo flash a kernel with odin now that's compatible with your android version. Not hard to find. Your phone will boot no problem

[Q] SGS II broken =(

Hi every body hope you're doing great! Well today i had accidentally flash my galaxy s2 with the wrong room(jelly bean XXLSJ) via room manger in cyanogen mod 9 and i forgot that it was rooted so i wont be able to get access to it: the screen stop at the samsung logo
Therfore i tried to reflash it with cyangen mod again with odin but odin is unable to finish the flashing process and it remain like that (up it show kernel in the rectangle )
I was shocked and thankfully i steel have the download mode but i can't access to the recovery menu i didn't know what to do, i tried other stock rooms but in vain
When i boot normally it said in the screen "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again"
Can you help me guys? I will be grateful ^_^
Well firstly its "rom" not "room.
To solve your situation simply flash Siyah kernel via download mode in odin. Once installed you will have cwm so just boot into recovery and flash the rom zip you want.
For future reference you should NOT be using "Rom Manager" from google play etc. Its not properley compatible with I9100. If you wish to flash roms or backup etc then just reboot into CWM or use the CWM Manager that is installed after flashing some kernels like Siyah.

[Q] Black screen after flashing kernel

Hi,
I tried to flash a new kernel through odin but when my phone reboots the screen stays black (but I can still hear the boot-up sound).
I'm running stock 4.1.2 on I9100 and I'm rooted.
Is there a way to solve this?
Or just explain why this is happening?
Thanks,
Omit931
More details pls mate.
What kernel and were from?
What ROM/firmware?
What have you tried?
Can you get to download mode or recovery?

I have tried with Siyah (and Dorimanx, which is based on Siyah) Kernel (from here on XDA).
I'm just using the official stock rom 4.1.2 (but rooted)
I can get into recovery and download mode.
So i can get back to stock kernel to get all functions back, but I would like to try other kernels to try dual-boot, better performance,...
Flash dori 8.32 I no this works. Flash through recovery. To dual boot a 4.1.2 ROM it need to be moded. stock won't dual boot. Don't try.
I just tried to do that but I keep getting an error message:
"E:signature verification failed"
edit:
After looking a bit more into it, the error is "status 7" which would mean (according to google) that it isn't compatible with my phone.
Which surprises me since it is a kernel build for the i9100.
I've also seen a status 7 for a bad download of the file. Re-download the kernel and give it a go.
As you can't boot, download the kernel on your pc, then in cwm, go mounts&storage >mount usb. Then transfer the file over from pc to phone, and flash. Dorimanx 8.32 is a good bet as Andrew said.
Edit: that's assuming that you boot into CWM recovery, not the stock recovery.
Also, when you were flashing via Odin, were you flashing the tar extension as needed? Or did you accidentally grab the zip file? Zip file won't work on Odin, only in a custom recovery.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
When I flashed with Odin, I did use the tar file. There was no error using odin but when I rebooted, the screen stayed black.
I would want to use CWM but when I try to instal it (using the zip file from the Clockworkmod site) it's only temporary because when I reboot the phone, it's back in stock recovery
Yes, correct. To get the permanent recovery, you can use PhilZ kernel. Its the stock kernel, only rooted and with CWM recovery. It comes in an Odin version as well as a version which is flashable from stock recovery.
But back to your flashing....
What 4.1.2 are you on? And it is an i9100 we're talking about right?
And what kernel did you flash?
If Odin said it passed, the reason (except on rare cases) for it not booting is that there is an incompatibility between the ROM and the kernel you flashed.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
It is the i9100, buildnumber: i9100xwlss (if that's what you're asking).
I tried to flash Siyah and Dorimax (I know this is based on Siyah). Both gave the status 7 error.
I'll try Philz Kernel and let you know what the result is.
Edit:
Philz Kernel installed and working perfect. Thank you very much!
Yes, that's what I was asking.
Great work! Now you should be set make sure you read carefully before doing anything, that's my tip.
