[Q] How to move a rooted Photon to Ting? - Motorola Photon 4G

All of the normal steps to moving to Ting don't work. I was told by their customer service that I would need to do a factory reset and put the phone back to OEM status in order to activate the phone on their service.
Roommate's phone that he got from one of his friends who had given him the phone already rooted and possibly a custom rom...not sure. I found "Gummy Settings" in the system settings so I think it is a custom rom. The fact that he already had it rooted means he has no idea what was used to root it or anything like that.
Can someone help guide me on what I need to do to get it back to a state that it can be setup for Ting?
I am totally lost at this point and I'm not sure if a factory reset on a custom rom would cause any permanent damage or not.

Rooted won't keep the phone from activating, a custom ROM might or might not depending on the ROM.
The "normal" way to activate a used Photon on Sprint or a Sprint MVNO like Ting is:
1. Set up an account with Ting and enter the MEID on the "Enter ESN" screen. Be sure that Ting accepts the MEID as valid and able to be used.
2. Do a factory reset. The reset will not harm the custom ROM if there is one. It will however delete all contacts, accounts, ringtones, saved messages, user installed apps, etc.
3. After you reset the phone it will restart and run hands free activation which will activate the phone on the network. Hands free sometimes fails but it will give you an option to retry. You may have to retry a few times especially if coverage is bad.
If handsfree fails, post the Android version, Baseband version and Build number from the Settings > About phone screen and some one here may be able to tell you what ROM you have and how to get it to activate.

Here is a screenshot
I have taken a screenshot of the "About Phone" portion of the Settings and attached it to this post. Hopefully this will help narrow down what needs to be done.

Definitely a custom ROM. Have you tried a factory reset yet?

No I have not because I was told on a different site that doing the reset may mess up the phone depending on the ROM and since I have never heard of this ROM, I decided not to risk it without further information or someone who knows more than me (not hard to do) could guide me on the next best step.

The ROM you're running is Gummy 1.2.2. I'm not familiar with that ROM but the ROM thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633931 I recommend reading the entire thread and if you still have concerns about factory resetting or activating, post your questions in that thread.
If you want to go back to stock see the last part ("Return to Stock/Relocking via FullSBF flash") of post 6 of Lokifish's excellent "!!!LOOK HERE FIRST!!! Motorola Photon Compendium a.k.a. all things MoPho 06/11/12" thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393519

[Q] Flight mode won't turn off!! HELP!!

Hey, what's up. So, here's the problem.
1. I flashed Void, I didn't like.
2. I flashed the stock rom (froyo 2.2).
3. now airplane mode in "settings > wireless and network settings" won't turn off.
I've tried taking the battery out for 10 seconds and putting it back again to no avail.
Help please!!!! Now I can't make any calls or anything cuz I've got no connection anywhere!!
Reflash the stock ROM

wipe all. try to flash devoid its 2.2 but a lot better.
How did you flash stock ROM? By creating a KDZip(stockrom.zip) and then flashing it? Anyway try to wipe dalvik-cache via Recovery.
1. I've flashed the stock twice
2. I don't wanna go for another ROM at this stage. Getting an error when restoring, and not being able to restore, a nandroid backup is what landed me in this mess, and I'm not sure what other misleading information about Romming I've been fed.
3. Nah, I flashed the stock .DZ.
4. Would my service provider be able to format and reinstall android, or will I be looking at getting a new phone?? Cuz that would suck.

Well, if you keep restoring messed-up/corrupt/broken settings etc., no wonder flashing does not help. Wipe everything and flash a stock ROM, do not restore any broken mess. That is what your provider would do anyway, so no need to waste money.

I did flash shiny ROMs located on this forum over here. I spoke to LG and I have to call them back in a couple. They're gonna get the same phone and we're gonna walk the problem together.
Like 20 minutes or something later..
Yeah, so they said they don't know and I should take it to an MTN outlet. They're not very helpful on Sundays I think.. Gonna take it in tomorrow then
Oh yeah, and i would still like to know..
..if my service provider would be able to restore original Froyo 2.2.0 or if I should consider forking out for a new phone?? .. Or if by any chance LG could restore Froyo bearing in mind that I've flashed 2.2.1 stock and the phone has been un-rooted, or if they'll say hard luck??
Well, as I already said. You still have lingering junk there. Flight mode is not some miracle, it is simply a profile with WiFi/BT/2G+3G turned off. (What can be turned on in flight mode is set in an sqlite DB, so it is even possible to override it).
So, no matter what you have flashed or not, you did that incorrectly. Being unable to switch flight mode on/off does not come out of nowhere.
There is absolutely no need to buy a new phone, your problem is a software one, not a faulty HW. (For questions what LG will or will not do, ask them, not here.)

Thanks ^_^ You obviously know more about this than me, so how do you suggest I proceed if I wish to get back to stock Froyo like it was when I got the phone?? Should I take the phone in to service provider or something??

Well, if you are unable to restore the original ROM properly, then take it somewhere where they can. Does not necessarily have to be your service provider, any authorized LG service can do that, plus lots of unauthorized shops can do it as well (warranty is a different issue here, though.)
Anyway, before you take the phone somewhere - if you flashed something from the thread you mentioned, you probably have 2.2.0 or 2.2.1. Have you tried using LG PC Suite to upgrade the phone to latest version (should be 2.2.2 pretty much regardless the operator/country). Might get you proper flash as well.
Also, CWM recovery has Wipe All option which wipes everything except for recovery.
Thanks so much ^_^ I got a 2.2.1 *.DZ. I don't have the energy to struggle with that anymore so I it took to my service provider and the guy there ordered me a new phone. Awesome of him hey!! At the end of the day, phones were actually made to call, TXT, and tweet with, so I'm through flashing. Time for me to throw in the towel and show it some love just the way it is!!

Ok, so I have a rooted photon with cm 7.2 and sprint wasn't able to get it activated. ESN is fine and they inputed everything, but when I tried to do the ##yada yada thing nothing happens. It's supposed to let me put in a password. Does it need to be put back to stock then activated?
Yes you have to put it back to stock first.

PM Sent Miguel, thanks. I can get a stock rom from here right Josh? I guess that will unroot it too. I did do a nandroid backup, so I can just re-root it and run that. Darn, that's what I get for not reading enough. I just assumed it was no biggie to activate any phone.
Edit:
I forgot I already had rdslite and had to un root it before. I accidentally soft bricked it when I first got it so i'm returning it to stock then I'll call back. I'll give you a call Miguel if I can't get it working, but once stock it should be fine, thank you.

I don't have a photon so I wouldn't know but I am sure you can easily find a stock ROM. I just know I have tried to activate a few different phones that had custom ROMS and they would never activate until they were back to stock.

OMG i'm stuck in a boot loop=(.. I ran RSD lite and put or attempted to put 198 on twice and still in boot loop. Any idea what I need to do now to get it out of boot loop?
Factory reset with hardware keys, Link Here. Then try to SBF, AKAIK your supposed to full wipe everything before trying to SBF. If thats a no go then try a different .SBF file of a different version, may have been a bad download or the such. And incase you didnt know, RSDLite is supposed to come back with a failure at the end, its normal. And FWIW, I think you could have gone back to a Nandroid of a stock rom to get it to activate. Dont quote me there but im pretty sure, know for a fact you can update prl and all that when unlocked and on stock rom so you should also be able to activate id assume.

I'm going to flash a stock rom, but can I leave it unlocked? I unlocked it and put CWM back on so I can flash a stock rom and I think I should be ok. I'll give that a try first.
Edit: wwhhheeeww, ok so I just wiped data and dalvik and rebooted and the sbf file I was rsd ing came up. So it's totally stock, but with unlocked bootloader and with CWM. Rom is stock so I should be able to activate it unless the unlocked bootloader is a problem.
The only sprint phone that im aware of being able to be activated with CM is the NS4G. This is because sprint pushes a carrier profile from the network to your phone, which is what tells the phone it's allowed to use the network, and CM cannot receive nor retrieve the profile, hence why it wont activate. The reason CM works on our phones is because we already have the profile on it prior to flashing CM, its activated so it doesn't need to receive a new profile. This process doesn't work in reverse (flash CM then activate phone).
With all that said, the short story is you need to be stock or stock based custom ROM prior to activating a sprint phone unless it's NS4G. After activating and the phone handshaking with the network, flash away.
thanks

I should be able to load up my backup right? I did it with CWM just before I put it back to stock. I haven't done the root but since I have unlocked bootloader and CMW I should be good to go right?

Continuing along droidstyle's train of thought, I think you should try flashing a new modem. Go to section 7 of his guide and flash the one called EC09. Please let us know what happens.
Just to be clear, you are a Verizon customer in the U.S., aren't you?

Did what you suggested with no luck, same problem.
Yes i am a verizon customer in the U.S
I should mention when i try to make a call i get a message saying "we can not authenticate your phone.
Try doing a full Odin reset, as laid out in droidstyle's guide. When you boot up, you'll be on stock bloated gingerbread. From there, do a factory reset through the Settings --> Privacy menu. When you boot back up, you'll be prompted to program your phone just as you did when you pulled it out of the box. Follow the prompts, pushing 1 to program.
Hopefully, you'll have a signal and 3g by then. If not, you may want to call Verizon. From there, you can continue following the guide to do whatever you want to do.
i think you should try activating another smart phone your line then reactivate the fascinate...also known as esn swap.

@droid i do not have another smartphone
Have you tried flashing back further than gingerbread? I recently came back from an mtd rom and repartotioned with the eho3 file and I am having some odd quirks my self. I have heard it said several times that eb01 is the most successful file to use when repartitioning. That was going to be my next step, it can't hurt to try for you either.
One more thing. You didn't by any chance have clear phone efs checked when you odined did you? There was some one that did that recently on here and had similar problems.
"Edit". If you did wipe your efs the meid in your phone won't match the one on your account and will cause those issues. Go into settings, about phone, status. Right down your meid then compare it to the one printed on the FCC sticker underneath your battery. If it matches then thats one thing you dont have to worry about. If it doesn't match then that would be your problem.
Even though we're not sure if this is the problem, I did find this thread for someone who had the "Phone EFS Clear" box checked:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990939
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to go through the motions.
Was this your regular phone before all of this started, or is it a new phone for you?
I am encountering a very similar problem, just the 3g part, i can send/receive calls and texts, and ran across this thread looking for a solution. Were you able to fix it?

[Q] Borked i717

I'm a casual enthusiast who has always rooted his Android phones without an issue but have run into problems with an i717 I recently bought. I've gone through quite a bit of troubleshooting over the past few days and am beaten and must ask for help. When I first bought the phone, it was woefully out of date so using Kies, I updated the phone. All was good and phone was up to 4.0.4 (or whatever the most current version is) and working perfectly unrooted. At that point, I rooted it using qbking77 instructions on YouTube. Per RootChecker I was rooted but noticed I couldn't connect to the internet without WiFi. At this point, the trains went off the track as I tried to install a stock 4.0.4 modem which didn't work, panicked and used Da_G's [Stock ODIN] ROM trying to get back to stock. At this point, I started getting error messages like "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly", something similar about calendar, phone won't work, etc. Also, when I go into recovery mode, I can navigate up and down with the volumes keys but can't select anything with the power key and after about 10 seconds, it goes to an ominous screen with a red triangle and exclamation point. Phone stats currently are:
Android 2.3.6
Baseband: I717UCLF6
Kernel: 2.6.35.11
Gingerbread.UCLA1
In any case I'm really bummed as I just bought this phone on Monday and have already borked it. Any help appreciated and unfortunately I am not familiar with all of the acronyms and nomenclature around here so direct links to helpful post would be useful. At this point, I just want to get to the most current stock AT&T ROM possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the response and as I indicated above, I have tried Da_G's methods in the 2nd link multiple times with no success. I'll go through the steps in the first link and see what happens. I am looking for something to wipe the phone completely clean as there is not a thing on it I need. Hopefully these will do the business. One thing that I am not able to sort out is how to tell if a ROM comes with a modem, how to tell from the settings on my phone if a proper modem is installed and if I need to install a modem, how to tell which is the correct modem for the ROM installed. I have read quite a bit on modems but there is just so much information I'm honestly a little confused. Thanks again for your input and I'll post up results later tonight when I have time to troubleshoot.
Looks like you are on a GB rom (2.3.6) with ICS (4.0.4) modem. You can flash a GB modem or use KIES firmware upgrade and initialization to put you back to completely stock ICS (UCLF6)

Title says GB because that was the latest supported ROM at the time of posting. This will put you back to stock UCLF6.

I had a feeling it had something to do with the modem. I did a search for GB modems and am overwhelmed by the amount of options! I found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764210 but am unsure what the numerical designators are; EL 26, EL29, etc. Do these make a difference for what I am trying to do? Thanks for posting up and helping out. Can't wait to get home and get this damn phone sorted out.
Forget the modem -- there's no such thing as a GB or ICS modem -- they are independent of the android version.
What you have is the LATEST modem, so that part is OK.
The crazy error messages you're getting are from multiple flashes without cache wipes and system wipes.
The LF6 is year and month of release in samsungese.
Did you install a custom recovery, like CWR or TWRP?
That's your first move toward a good phone.

I didn't knowingly install a custom recovery unless it was built into a ROM I installed as the phone was new to me and I didn't have any data on it I felt I needed to be recovered. I now have the feeling that this isn't the type of recovery "custom recovery" is used for. I can get into "Android system recovery" through vol+/- and power if that is what you are talking about but like my original post mentioned, I can thumb up and down through the options with the volume keys but can't select anything with the power key. I was able to select with the power button upon originally installing the first 2 ROMs so I don't believe it is a hardware issue with the button. How do I tell if I have a custom recovery installed and what are the steps to take if I don't. Pardon my ignorance but I always assumed there was a way to completely wipe these devices and start over as long as you could access the device through Windows. I have nothing on this phone to save and just want to get it back to stock. I wish I could get Kies to allow me to factory reset but I keep getting the "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update through Kies". I know we are encouraged to read and learn on our own but as in any forum this size, there is quite a bit of ambiguous information available and I am frankly lost and it also doesn't help that I seem to be having multiple issues at once. If the modem is okay, and I don't have a custom recovery installed, what is the next step? Again, thanks to all of you taking the time to help out! I know what it's like to have a passion for something and the ability to help others work their way out of issues, mine just happens to be carbureted Japanese motorcycles, not phones!
Ignore the "your device current firmware" message in KIES. Open KIES, Put your phone in download mode, connect to PC , in KIES, select tools, firmware upgrade and initialization, enter your model (SGH-I717), it will ask for the serial number so have it handy, and continue through the prompts as outlined in the aforementioned post. KIES will completely reset your device to UCLF6. (Recovery, modem, system, etc.) You will be stock un-rooted when complete.

Well thanks to rsfinsrq's advice, the phone appears to be restored! No more error messages and everything seems to be running smoothly but I still can't get internet connectivity without WiFi. I can send/receive texts and calls but no internet browsing, Google Play, etc. Under Settings-->About Phone-->Status-->Mobile Network State is listed as "Disconnected". What could be causing this? I am leery to go poking around with it this soon but would like to get the full use of the phone. Thoughts?

Reading a little more on this, it seems this might be an issue with my AT&T plan and this particular device. I'll run by the AT&T store tomorrow to see if I can get it sorted. If anyone does have any additional suggestions, post them up!

I checked that first and it is enabled. I toggled it off, restarted phone and then toggled it back on and still nothing. Like I said, I'll check with AT&T tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Same spot, go to access point names, hit the menu button and reset to default.
Mystery solved! A trip to the AT&T store and I was told the lack of connectivity was due to my SIM card not being provisioned for an LTE enabled phone and it was "confusing" the network. 5 minutes spent getting a new SIM card and I was out the door, no muss no fuss and my very first positive experience with AT&T customer service. I guess there is a first for everything! Thanks again to everyone who helped out and I will definitely make sure I am a little more educated the next time I root and flash a ROM. Any suggestions for a stable ROM for me to start with?
Glad to hear you got it sorted out!

[Q] Phone Stuck In Roaming With Correct IMEI (I've tried almost everything!)

Hey guys,
So I got a real doozy here...
I flashed my Verizon Note 2 (SCH-I605) to the SOKP Rom from a Jedi X Rom (v13 I believe). After the flash, I noticed my network was not working. Eventually I found out that the device was registering as a GT-7105. Not sure what went wrong, as the rom was flashed with no errors. I also ensured that my recovery was on the appropriate version (TWRP 2.6.3.3 in this case) and I also did a factory reset. To try and rectify the issue I wiped the phone and tried various other roms. In every one of those cases I found that the phone was constantly roaming. I had checked my network mode and tried switching between Global and LTE/CDMA which did nothing. Being completely out of options, I just installed to a stock rom through Odin (VRAMC3 4.1.2) and let it update via Wifi to 4.3 and still nothing. (I am well aware of the Knox security feature and will address this in a moment)
Here are the different ways I tried to diagnose the issue after this that led nowhere:
1. Made contact with a Tier-2 specialist from Verizon that tried various diagnostic methods and found that my phone was simply not registering on the Verizon network, or ANY other network for that matter.
2. I went to a Verizon store and got my SIM card replaced.
3. I even went to a repair shop to see if the phone possibly had a faulty connection.
I have already verified that the IMEI is correct based on the sticker behind the battery. The PRL is on 15310. The very last thing I tried was entering "getprop" inside a terminal. I'm taking a guess here, but I noticed my ril.serialnumber was all 0s. Could this be the problem? If there's anymore information someone needs, I'll be happy to post it up. Just hoping I can get a little direction here. If I need to root my phone again to try something, I am more than willing to. My phone is out of warranty and not insured, I'm not really concerned about the Knox warranty trigger unless it will render my phone completely unusable.

If updating the Profile and PRL on a stock based rom doesn't get it back, then you might have corrupted your EFS partition. I don't suppose you used TWRP to back up the EFS partition when you did a nandroid?
FYI: Doesn't matter what the phone is listed as (n7105) for connecting to the network. It's just a build.prop edit away from saying whatever you want it to.

Unfortunately, I did not back up the EFS partition. I'm guessing I should try and restore this somehow?

Can't restore what wasn't backed up. The efs is unique to your phone. In some cases you can use another part of another phone's efs partition, but not always and is gonna be a huge hassle either way. But yea, I think you're in a pretty tricky situation. I was reading on another forum that the serial number being 0 shouldn't cause this issue though, so not really sure what to think. Usually when this sort of thing happens, the IMEI gets messed up too. Updating Profile and PRL didn't help?

I guess that'll be the next step for me. I didn't want to go through the hassle without making sure. Please send me the links on how to do this if they are available.

I don't have a Note 2 in front of me, but generally it should be in Settings / About Phone / Update or Software Update and for most Samsung CDMA phones, the Profile and PRL options are in or around there.

Yeah, it's actually in the Status section. It does not allow me to edit anything in this area. I don't see anything that says Profile.
Hmm I guess VZW decided you don't need to have access to those functions. Weird. Sorry man, I dunno what to tell you at this stage.
Edit: Found this -
"The only acceptable way to update it on LTE phones is to take the SIM out, boot the phone back up, let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes, power off, reinsert SIM, reboot phone. That's the only one I know of, there may be other ways to do it but that is the easiest."
Not sure if it will help, but certainly isn't going to make it any worse. What baseband version do you have installed?
First thing you need to do is write down your IMEI number. You do NOT want to lose that. Seriously, write it down with a pen. Also your serial number and anything else you find in the EFS partition you might need that's specific to your phone. THEN: at this point it sounds like you'll have to find someone's EFS partition. I've seen it around on XDA multiple times as I've gone through threads similar to this one. Once you find an SCH-i605 efs you'll have to flash/replace/edit yours somehow, try editing your own first to match the same values as your peer's. Don't replace personal information tho. If you end up replacing it you'll have to go in and re-enter your own IMEI number somehow. I am not an expert on how you can do this, but stated here is/would be the process.

Thanks, I'll see if I can hunt down an EFS partition that fits my phone. Considering I haven't had any luck yet...I'm not too hopeful in finding one.
