[Q] TWRP recovery - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Can someone please confirm which twrp recovery works with the 4.4.2 update....I updated by flashing the tar.md5 file that was posted by freeza. Then I re rooted with no problem using cf auto root. I can't seem to figure out which twrp will work. I tried to flash one version but it just kept blinking on the team win symbol. I had to take the battery out and try again but no go. I was gonna try twrp 2.6.3.7 but I don't want to get into any problems seeing how I can't do a back up right now because I have stock recovery. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Just make sure that the TWRP you are getting says it's for 4.4 BL. This one is the one in using and all seems well..

Most definitely. One of the most challenging tasks, forging recovery for a device and its corresponding operating system, providing the means for most of what we do, and yet likely the least glamorous.
Thank and pay the dev if you can.

Very well said my friend. I'm sure it's even more challenging the fact that bigbiff doesn't even own A Note3, yet supports our addiction. To make such recoveries for a device in which he will gain no access speaks volumes to his character and selflessness. A true contributer/dev to so many devices this team is. Just outstanding!

Need some root assistance....please

Hello -
I have browsed through countless threads and obviously overlooking something for a successful root.
I was able to root using option #3 in the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894. All went without issue and I see the SuperUser application on the phone.
However, I cannot get into Clockwork. Holding the power buttons and power button only takes me in the typical Android reset menu.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You don't have rom manager installed hopefully. If not, you simply power your phone off , hold down volume up down and power until it reboots KEEP holding it it may flash the boot logo more than once then it should take you into clock work mod recovery. Also keep in mind you need a custom kernel to have clockwork mod recovery installed, as our kernels have recovery built in.

Thanks for the assistance. No --- I do not have ROM Manager installed. The button sequence only takes me into the typical Android menu that has four options. Going from memory: Reboot, apply update.zip, factory reset, clear cache. It's not the Clockwork menu...I'm familiar with it.
I guess that means that the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 only roots the phone and I need to apply a custom kernel. If so, do I have to find a custom kernel and apply through ODIN since I cannot flash through Clockwork? If so, can you give me a link on how to do this?
Thanks.

You just installed the stock kernel with stock 3e recovery. You now need to install a custom kernel. Go to this thread, which is the full directions for rooting and installing a ClockworkMod Recovery enabled kernel.
Also since you're rooted, you can flash kernels with mobile Odin if ya want, it's on the Android market. Is free to flash roms gotta pay for it to flash kernels and stuff but it's well worth it in my opinion.

This. It's definitely the best way.
Thanks to everyone. I was missing the step of flashing a kernel with Clockwork mod. I did purchase mobile ODIN Pro and now able to access the menu to flash. I was used to the 1-click one stop shop utility under the Galaxy Nexus.

[DEVS/Firmware] JSS15J.N900PVPUBMI5 update.zip

Hi guys.
Here is the update.zip for MI5. I have taken the liberty to remove the firmware (bootloader, trustedzone, etc) from this just incase Samsung is trying to pull something. I'm posting two versions, one with the firmware and one without. Appyling this update.zip caused my phone to not boot with the updated kernel. I had to revert back to the MI3 kernel in order to boot up. I'm assuming this is due to either root, or me removing the firmwares. That is why i'm labeling this as dev.
NOTE: DO NOT FLASH THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR PREVIOUS KERNEL AND CAN RESTORE.
NOTE2: You can safely flash the Update WITH previous kernel once it goes live.
Update with no firmwares:
MI5 Update NO bootloader
Update with firmwares:
MI5 Update FULL
Update with previous kernel:
COMING SOON
Thanks. If I don't see a new TAR this weekend I'll patch the modem so it can be flashed via Odin.

Can't wait to see how the mi5 setup works out. Cause as of right now, the call quality is horrible. I'm dropping 10+ calls a day. In areas my note2 would never drop a call.

flashed earlier. never had as good of a signal as I am getting now.
4glte connects stronger, and for further distances than ever before, lte to 3g handoff was flawless. and call quality was vastly improved.

When you are in TWRP, the "boot" check box, is the kernel. So, when backing up or restoring, as long as that box is checked, the kernel should be backed up (or restored).

We have been trying all day to get the update... It is not yet available for me or freeza.
if you would like too return to stock, and if you get the OTA. let us know...
we can walk you through pulling the files, and uploading, so either myself or freeza can make a flashable for everyone. I also spoke to Garwyn, and he doesn't have the OTA yet either. It also isn't posted on Sammobile, and it isn't available in Kies yet either...
Be patient. Obviously, we will be posting stock rom, odin restore, and update zips/. these things just take time.

MJ7 Progress to Flashing

So we on MJ7 obviously at this point are stuck with barely gaining root and still not able to flash custom ROMs... So I'm making this thread for us to post up any leads or any questions we have on furthering our phones to be able to flash...
Any devs currently working on this would be helpful to chime in to let us know what's up and what you need for us to help...

Your telling me! I did a lil research and saw that there were ROMs for the s4 and I just got it the other day and coming from the s3 I was like this will be easy to root and flash again..... Pshhhh come to find out I bought an MJ7 so the rooting process was a pain in the @#$%& lol

Admittedly I'm new to this, but from my research, can't you just flash an old kernel/version and then install whatever you want?
Wouldn't this method work? galaxys4root . com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-verizon-galaxy-s4-sch-i545/
Basically put in ODIN mode and install an old image, then you can install the ROM you want, right?

Exactly.
If you are on a newer version of ROM, you cannot go back.
That is why, one should be very careful about taking an update.
Thanks for the info. Glad I didn't try that
When I got my device it was at least two versions back, so there's no way to factory reset my device to what I got when I first received my device?

It's relatively well documented that you cannot downgrade from MJ7. If I recall, it's not a hard brick. It's either a soft brick or the flash just fails.
I have faith that we'll have an answer to this soon. Devs never take long to find a workaround.

@Stolly08 what method did you use to Root? I'm still hesitant to try...had my VZ GS4 (running MJ7) for about 3 weeks now.
I'm basically trying to rid my device of bloatware (and praying to eventually flash custom ROMS whenever we all figure that out )
After having HTC phones for 5 years, all rooted, I said enough of the crappy battery life and decided to take the Samsung mainly because of the huge dev support and good battery life. Kinda bummed out we dont have root for MJ7 with unlocked boot loader but Im sure the Dev's are working hard to get it for us

From Jellybomb MJ4 to KitKat Killer NAB

Going from MJ4 Jellybomb to NAB KitKat Killer
Follow these links precisely in this order. This process assumes these things:
You already have Odin and the drivers for your device.
You are already on a rooted MJ4 Jellybomb ROM
You have already played around with your device before and will not blame me if you break it.
This is a painless process and shouldn't take more than a couple hours to download everything and install. I am using Odin v3.09 as I find this works the best on my Note 3 and never causes problems. If you do not see your device in Odin this is another thing all together, and you need to find the drivers.
Odin each file in the AP slot, this used to be known as PDA. Reboot after each Odin flash let the device sit for a minute then on to the next. Odin v3.09 will already have the 'reboot' option checked by default.
Do not wipe anything until you get the recovery back onto your device.
At this point it is up to you. I wiped System, Dalvik and Cache only and have had no difficulty.
EDIT HERE: To make it even easier here is a link to Odin as well thanks to @daerragh

First of all I am glad this helped you. You shouldn't need the engineering boot-loader unless something got messed up. If you just want it for future ability to flash basebands then yes. Being NABbed (yeah) is a prerequisite to flashing @freeza boot-loader.

Now that we have the full restore files for both builds, just flash stock MJ4, back up your internal memory to your computer, flash the complete stock NAB tar or one-click, and go from there.
Those tar files bring you to official status, the second plants NAB on your phone, after which time you can flash recovery and either root, or go straight to K3.
Not a bad idea to factory reset your rooted MJ4 phone prior to flashing the stock MJ4 file, as it will save you some time.
Just follow the OP.
It's super easy, fun for the whole family.

I know you asked for the Stock Recovery, but if the only reason you want to keep it is for the "just in case" times, I'd recommend just keeping the Return to Stock One-Click by Rwilco... It'll restore everything to stock (except for your Knox Status).
