Free wifi tethering on GSM versions of LG G2 - G2 General

Guys, I wonder if there's some kind of fix for enabling free wifi tether on rooted GSM versions of LG G2. I have rooted D803 in particular, I guess it doesn't matter. There's a fix for Verizon model but I couldn't find anything working for me. I have 5Gb/$30 plan of TMO and I was always tethering my SGS 3 for using my iPad and I can't do the same with LG G2. That is very annoying.
Please help me with advice.
Thank you in advance.

No, I have WiFi hotspot settings, but I'm on custom ROM (mix of Clean and official TMO) on my D801/D803 ClaroPR. Right now I can see the networks but every website redirects to mytmobile.com!

No, it's too expensive. 15$/months is too much, I'd consider $5 may be. The thing is that some lucky people with Verizon model using their tether for free...
At least I can use PdaNet with Bluetooth or USB tether on my laptop. Its a bit slow but works just fine, never had any issues. Its a pity that there's no working option to pair my LG G2 and iPad.

I had your issue.
I setup a VPN connection on my home computer and use noip.com for my own web address to my home computer. I turn on VPN and then turn on the tether and I don't get the redirect to my-tmobile.
The connection is a little slower but it's more secure.

[Q] Mobile internet stick on the Gtab?

Was in the coffee shop and started talking to a guy about internet access. It got us thinking, has anyone been successful in getting their internet stick to work on the Gtab?

As far as I know, doesn't work yet with the TNT Lite or Vegan ROMs. People have reported that the USB 3G devices power up, but there's no 3G support that appears, presumably because of lack of kernel support. If Viewsonic releases kernel source though, I'm sure that within a few weeks you'll see ROMs here that have USB 3G support built in, since I know Linux drivers exist for these devices.
I use the Overdrive from Sprint. It creates a Wifi hotspot
Works great

I felt that was the way to go as well. I had 2 clear 4g usb sticks and upgraded one to the clearspot wifi router. Other than that I just turn the wifi on my phone and tether it that way.

The kernel sees my CDMA modem but there is no 'app' to control them. The issue is no app not the kernel.
I find these usb stick posts funny. I would figure a majority of gtab owners have an android phone. And so... I would also assume the phones are rooted.
If this is the case just use a WiFi tether application on your phones. Some of the newer versions even work as access points and not just ad hoc networks.

yeah I plug my sprint evo 4 g into my tab to keep it charged and turn on the sprint wi-fi app (via myn's warm mod)
works really well this way since its infrastructure mode
Hmmm.... thanks guys, it's a wait and see thing then, either app or kernal support.
I have the Huawei E181 stick on Wind mobile up here in Canada but don't have data on the phone so tethering or WiFi hotspot's not an option for me unfortunately.
It would have been really cool to set it up like you guys and have internet on the go.

Nope, not everyone has an android phone to tether. I do have a sprint 3g/4g usb stick I would love to get working though. And no, not interested in a smart phone, with web, and email, it's a cell phone, all I need it to do, is allow me to call people, and recieve calls. I don't even have text enabled, because I hate txting.

You think you've got it bad, try finding a way to tether to a Blackberry....
While I could tether my N1 to my GTab I would prefer to use my SierraWireless USB 308 stick with the device for internet connectivity.
As I have "virtually" unlimited DATA with the stick (where mass DATA consumption is allowed) as opposed to my N1 which while on an unlimited DATA plan is not supposed to be used for tethering. I do use my N1 as a WiFi hotspot from time to time but I prefer to keep that to a minimum, in case at&t Mobility decides to get snarky and take away my unlimited plan and substitute it for a 2Gb plan.

Texting takes much less time than taking a call.
Someone calls you have to 1) stop what you are doing. 2)hold the phone 3)in some cases get up and walk out of your office (if you work in a cubicle).
Who has the time?
Some one texts and i can answer in one or two sentences and through down the phone and keep working. Plus answering can be done at a time of MY chosing, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes later. Dont have to STOP what im doing at that moment to take the call. Call me you get voice mail and a return call 5 hours later when im done at work. Text me you get a response in less than half an hour....
Just saying.....
FRANKLY, when i hear peopke say they hate texting i always think "man, i wish i had the kind of time to waste as you do" ha ha

hit a button at my ear, Say "Call (insert name here)" and have a 10s conversation
to fulfill all the the Q&A that I would have taken a dozen txts or more to complete.
and I can do it while I'm driving without fear of a ticket.
dido, although for me it's a Videotron stick and a XOOM ... would be epic.

Be careful, Big Red (and others) is watching. Wireless tether, easy tether, and PDAnet have all been removed from the market for VZW customers. I am sure a quick Google search will find the apks to download, but I think part of what is pushing carriers to demand locked bootloaders is people abusing rooted tethering. I can’t say that I agree since I am paying for the data so it should not matter if I use it through my phone or laptop, but there have been rumblings of problems such as data throttles for heavy data users.

I don't agree with them, but I think the rationale is the buffet metaphor... you can't pay for the buffet and invite 5 friends to share your meal. I think this is a big part of why (to my knowledge) USB tethering isn't being targeted. Wifi tethering is like sharing with 5 friends, USB tethering is bringing your own plate and silverware.
Honestly I'd prefer a "do what you want, tethering or not" approach that included a X GB limit over this "unlimited, but we decide how you use it" crap.

I hear the free unrooted mobile hotspot is only free for a few more weeks.
All you have to do to download Wireless Tether or any other apps blocked by Verizon is put your phone into Airplane Mode and then turn on WiFi. As long as you have a WiFi signal with the phone in Airplane Mode, you will have accessibility to all blocked Apps in the Market, even if your phone is not rooted!

Personally, I don't like that companies are moving toward the "buffet" approach to providing internet access. I have AT&T DSL. They provide me with an internet connection. PERIOD. They don't give me the internet connection and then say only use this on one computer nor do they say I'm not allowerd to hook it up to my Linksys router. It makes more sense to me that way. Maxing out my connection speed on one machine would be equivalent to me maxing it out across several.

[Q] built-in Hotspot vs. Wifi Tether?

What's the difference between the built-in wifi hotspot app that Sprint gave me vs. rooting and installing the wifi tether program I found?
Pete
They gave you??
You normally have to pay per month for the Sprint hotspot. Wireless tether is free if rooted.
The app is on my phone. I tested it, and there was no warning about any potential cost, so it's free, no?

I wouldn't think so but who knows. Better check with Sprint first before taking the chance of racking up a huge bill. I think it is normally around $30/month for that feature.

OK, thanks. That make sense - otherwise, I could see no benefit to wifi tether.
I'll confirm it did not cost me anything to test and complain if it did!
has anyone confirmed this???
Mine does turn on and the only warning it gives is about battery. As soon as I turn it off though I get a mobile ip registration error on the phone.

I've been told that the built in WiFi hotspot is a monthly charge so if you don't want to pay for it you should definitely root your phone and use WiFi Tether. I would post a link but I'm not allowed so just Google "WiFi Tether beta" and go to the second result. Good luck!

Going to attempt first root, or would prefer to avoid it and would pay someone local to do it for me. Verizon Galaxy Note 2. Would appreciate some help, need wifi tethering, have unlimited data. Don't want to brick this beautiful phone.

Have old Droid and was using Foxfi. Loved it, but now won't work with new OS on Note 2. Have unlimited data and need wifi tethering. If there was something like foxfi that would work I would be interested, but Verizon has blocked foxfi/pdanet now. Was told by a few people that I need to root to install app to run wifi hotspot because I still have the old unlimited data plan. Don't want to go in to Verizon to get new phone and their app for hotspot because it will cap my data (limited to whatever you pay for). Thank you.
To use Foxfi you will need to root, but like I said, just using a tether toggle widget will bypass the activation screen.
Thank you

I would LOVE to be able to use wifi tethering without rooting, but I cannot find anything that will work. Don't want bluetooth, want wifi. Spend my life in a hockey arena and soccer and softball field and need something for kids to connect to. Cannot find anything to work on 4.1.1 (Note II - SCH-1605) for Verizon. Do you know of something that will indeed work? I have the older unlimited data plan. Foxfi is blocked.... Thank you so much.

Wifi tethering with the L9 769

Hi All,
I have been trying my damndest to restore wifi tethering on the L769. Both my wife and I have the unlimited 4g plan which we use as our primary home internet as well. I have a nexus 4 and have had no problems using FoxFi with it (along with a vpn). I was using the FoxFi/VPN solution with my wife's L9 up until about 2 weeks ago, but since then the t-mobile hotspot/tethering app is interfering in a way that I cannot get around. I have rooted the device, done my best to disable this t-mobile tethering software, but with no results. I have tried the scripts that work to circumvent it wit no luck as well. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, J.

Update: I am able to use FoxFI's USB tether with my VPN to get around t-mobile's tethering suppression. My throughput is only around 3.5mbit down/2mbit up compared to 15mbit down/3.5 mbit that was possible with the wifi tethering. Oh well, at least it's progress.
