keeps rebooting when sim card in - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi all,
I'm new to this site and am kinda desperate.... I have trouble with my SGH-i717... whenever sim card is in, the device keeps rebooting.... I tried changing the whole sim card reader and no effect on the problem.... Device is now rooted (did it with odin) still no effect... I also tried sim card in other device and it works fine.... Running out of idea here and I'm kinda noob with this... Phone juste came out of warranty by the way and still stuck with 1 and a half year on my damm contract.. So I'll have to buy new phone or pay a 400$ penality for breaking contratc... dammit !!!!
:crying::crying::crying::crying:
Also, the phone has to be kept plugged in (to computer or wall plug) otherwise it keeps rebooting even when sim card is not in...

take a look at this thread if you haven't tried searching. I know you are new and probably looking for any fix. you cant panic here. your going to have to search and read.
in the thread I posted, or any thread, pay attention to the stats of some of the folks posting. you may pay attention to some of the more experienced folks.
I don't know some of the specifics as you did not mention. many factors come into play. you will see talk of what carrier..... it is important
what rom are you currently running or have installed?
how clean is your process of flashing?
how experience are you?
some in the thread are talking about modem......as one posted, "changing your modem is not going to fix problem", he is correct.
I have ran into many problems, only saw SIM message show when I had no SIM in phone. always the failsafe solution has been returning to stock and start over.
you would not be the first person to rush off and think, "im flashing my phone, look at me, im cool". doesn't work like that.
I have always been the more cautious one. I read and make sure I understand. I have all my files in place. heck, I have evan rehearsed the process.
sound stupid???
maybe so, but I have yet to have a problem I couldn't figure out.
could be a "fix permissions" issue
could be a "format system" issue
some developers have specific instruction for flashing their rom, any deviation could cause a myriad of problems.
again, look at experience levels of some of the posters.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260171
keep us informed as people are reading, but you haven't given any specifics. you have told us what your problem is and what you need fixed, but didn't tell us how you got there.
need that if you want help

[Q] htc rezound gsm question urgent?

I have a verizon wireless htc rezound. I was trying to use my at&t sim card in it attempting to unlock it( first time dealing with android). and figured out i got service but was not able to send sms. after searching i realized it wasnt just me. I have heard of the custom rom venasaur that fixed the sms problem. I am completely new to this and would really appreciate help installing this rom or fixing this problem? I dont know if i need to root it if i need an sd card i am pretty clueless at this point ?
How is this urgent?
Only put urgent in the title if you think you have bricked or something like that.
Start here and read the entire thread, take notes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=
If Venasaur ROM will fix your issue, then yes, you need root to flash it. You should really read about all of this for at least a week before doing anything to your phone or else you can easily cause irreparable harm or at least end up needing a lot of help to get it running again.
Take a bunch of notes about what commands do what, what order you do things in, etc... while you read so you can look that stuff up easily in one place. There's a lot to digest and absorb and you should have a decent understanding of things before you get started.

Important help needed -> Don't know if shutdown or freeze! App breakdown?

Simply putting this, i buyed a SGSII about a month ago, and since then it shutdows or freezes. I don't know what is wrong. I TRADED THE PHONE 3 TIMES!!! And all 3 times the phone has the SAME problem. It random shutdown/freeze(I don't know the difference). Theres almost 0% chance that the Vodafone store has 3 devices with teh exact same problem, when the 3rd SGSII i got(this one) is from a different package then the others....
So I ask here really kindly, who can help me if some1 already had some problem with some application I have installed. I leave here the screenshots of Google Play apps I have installed. Apart that i only have BBS.

Please understand me, I really want a phone that doesn't shutdow or freeze :/ I really need alarm for example in the morning and I can't even trust that to my phone since I can wake up and phone is just shutdown >,<
Update: Went 2 day again at the store, and they said that some faulty 4G SIM cards where causing problems(didnt specified which ones) and he traded me a new charger - This said, he told me that if problem still occurs to come talk to the sotre manager on monday...
If this helps, maybe it is causing the problem, if someone has this version of Android and reports it giving problems i would apreciate

Aw and I have a flip cover that has a magnet on top but that doesn't changes nothing right?
Well, it is off course possible it's software, but if it's brandnew you shouldn't be bothered with fixing problems like these yourself I think Personally I would send it back^^

Ill take it to the store then
So I went to Vodafone and first question they made was:
Have you changed your SIM card lately?
I todl them it had ~5years or something.
They said it may be the card.
I asked if this ever hapened.
They said never...
So i asked, if it never hapened why you say its because of SIM card?
---
And that was it. They told before anything I should change SIM and test if it still shuts down...
What you guys think? Anyways I'm gonna change SIM card to 4G one, since now Vodafone is obligating every1 to change, they gonna deactivate the old ones soon... Then i'm gonna see if phone goes down...
I just seems strange the phone goes down cause of SIM card with no signal or something... Anyone knows a answer to this?
Any1 knows osomething about this?

Dude, bumping your thread every couple of hours isnt going to achieve anything other then possibly it been closed or deleted.
Firstly people will reply when/if they have something to say. Second its New Years eve, most people are busy. Only reason why I'm not is because I'm not well at the moment so resting.
A sim card wouldnt make your phone shut down, hes talking crap. Also when you say "cant unlock" do you mean network unlock? If so then use the search button, we have plenty of topics on how to unlock network very easily, most/best are a simple app you install from market.
Don't take Vodafone's crap. Demand a replacement as the one they provided is faulty from day 1.
Try without a SIM too, this will prove that is not the problem.
Take Atheists advice and don't bump within a 24hr time frame, especially today/yesterday.

Are you sure on that? Seems they don't want to simply trade the phone, and wanna keep it for tests...
Though, 2 days passed and he doesn't shuts down...
Not entirely sure as I cannot test the phone myself but for a new phone to be playing up, it's not convenient and I would want a phone that works without crashing, especially from new.

Try to take off this cover with the magnet. I think that the magnet is interfering with the hardware which then causes the phone to shut down.

But I already went to the store, but they dont have any SGSII left lol Waiting for a new packages to come..

Must be a faulty hardware, is that store reliable?
A brand new device has to run super smooth, if not, store's fault.

Look dude, you have been told OVER and OVER again that it couldn't be the sim card causing phone to reboot. Its either your hardware like your phone or battery or its your software, ie your rom or apps installed.
Have you even bothered trying other sim cards?
Tried factory reset?
Have you tried other rom?
Have you tried other kernel?
Have you got refund and gone elsewhere?
Have you read any of the replies here or in your duplicate threads?

With all due respect it seems you don't read the replies you say you bother to answer...
1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
2- Since I have 14 days (and not the usual 30) to ready-exchange the device trying a SIM card won't be enough, since the phone can handle random time turned on without going down.
3/4 - I already changed the phone once, so same hardware flaw would be suspicioous since phones are tested and odds of getting a faulty hardware 2 times in a row with the exact swame faulty style is like 1/1000. Especially on recent SGSII.
5- Nope, i'm hoping i'll get a talk with Samsung(not vodafone) and talk to them if the third phone come with same problem.
6- Yes I did. But as I said on point 1) it seems you didn't read mines I asked for someone that has a sim card knowledge, since phones in the past DID shutdown due to low network/loss of signal causing phones to shutdown. But as I said to the Vodafone guy, i think its strange that a new phone such as most smartphones are to shutdown cause of SIM card beeing old/loosing signal with this 4G thing. But since i traded for this new SGSII and the SAME problem is hapening i tend to beleive is the SIM. Though I already asked Vodafone to send me a 4G card and if I get the third SGSII I will try to test the full 14 days I have to see if its the SIM card thats causing something or not.
Apart all of this, if any1 faced the same problem please tell me something(most likely will be from Portugal, who knows).

You haven't mentioned changing Roms or Kernels.
This to me sounds like a software issue.
This is not a Sim card issue!!!.
It might be wrong current or voltage issues, but this being a new phone would lead me straight back to it being a software issue.
I have a Galaxy S2 for over a year and had a load of random reboots or shutdowns. It always was a kernel issue, update to the latest or downgrade to the most stable always fixed it. So my advice try to fix the software before blaming the hardware. Try different kernels, Roms and if you are still having the problem then it is a hardware issue. Flash a stock Rom back on and your phone should still be under warranty. Goodluck
BTW this is hilarious: 1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
That sounds like a Rom or Kernel problem. First thing I would check! Are you sure that it shut downs rather than just freezing?
Also I just noticed your on 4.0.4 there is problems with the version of android

He's been advised now multiple time in multiple topics to try new kernel or rom but he just keeps simple ignoring the advise or dismissing it and seems to be convinced its his sim card for some odd reason.
If he wants to create multiple topics asking for help (have them closed/deleted) and then ignore the advise and then wonder why he still has same issues then its his own fault and his own problem.

[Q] Q/Help please read and dont be rude

Hello everyone!
It is obvious I did something REALLY wrong when experimenting with my Atrix 4g, and I would like to know if anyone here is willing to offer some guidance.
I must confess I am not VERY knowledgeable regarding Android phones (I have done it in the past with HTC’s running windows, so it’s been quite a while since then, but definitely similar to androids), BUT I learn VERY quickly and I know how to follow instructions (98% of the time)
So I think I might’ve soft brick it, and perhaps deleted files I should not. Anyway, also I would like to point that if I am NOT in the right thread, inform me where is the right place… in order to keep on going with my posts.
Once senior members/moderators consider this is the right spot for me, I will describe with further details what I have done.
I just can tell you, everything started without upgrades nor flashing the handset or anything alike… suddenly wifi and bluethooth stopped working. And since I could not pair it with my computer even after trying to use the USB cable, (I don’t allow my google account to handle my contacts) I decided to indulge myself and buy a new phone… and I bought a Moto RAZR but I like my Atrix and I want it working again
If you think you can help, or you are willing to help, feel free to ask what I have done, the steps I have followed and the threads I have revised. I have a little log of the things I have worked with and I know I have missed, surely, few important steps.
Thank you in advance for reading
Wow... This is got to be the longest list of disclaimers and precursors to an actual post EVER, lol.
You're asking a question. This is the Q&A section. You're good. Proceed at will.
For future reference, this kind of lenghty introduction and waiting for approval is hardly necessary. Just asj the question, the mods will move it if necessary, and you will only get lashed out at if the question is really trivial (so the solution can easily be googled) or has been answered enough times already (so the solution can easily be found by using the XDA forum search). Your question does kinda sorta fall into the second category, but since you're new here (and such a scardycat), let's let this one pass.
Based on your (very minimal) info, it kinda seems you have that dreaded problem where the wifi/bluetooth chip just dies all of a sudden... Unfortunately if that's the case, there is no known solution as that is most likely a hardware failure.
Yoy might want to go check some other threads (I'm on the phone so can't look for them now), some people have had limited success in dealing with this by applying pressure at certain points in the phone, usually by sliding a piece of thin plastic strip such as an old credit card.
You might however also want to describe your problem further, because it might not actually be this...

Im sorry, if my disclaimer was a little too lengthy, but I detest to intrude in areas where I am not supposed to be and, even worst I dislike to be told "you are not in the right area" makes me feel moron... but thanks for the support... following you will find a detailed description of what I have done and my results
Motorola Atrix 4G MB860 from AT&T unlocked for other markets
handset suddenly stop working wifi/bluetooth
actions taken and results:
1: hard reset
wiped out all information contained in the handset but it DID NOT made the wifi/BT antenna work
2: apparatus left for aprox 8 hours without battery, then wifi/BT antenna seemed to be operative, at least for 8 hours, tuned it off and on...displayed error message.
3: after consulting several threads posted in this very same website and in this area... no information helpful was found, other than flashing a newer ROM.
4: second hard reset using, tried the HR found in settings... unsuccessfully, handset rebooted with everything in it as if I didn't hard reset it
5: third hard reset: using power button and volume button (for one strange reason I have to press not only the volume down button, but both, in order to start the RSD protocol) but it does not move beyond that point, so after some research.. I found out it has been softbricked, handset operative, but the aforementioned issues still going on.
6: after some research, here

I found I could flash a newer ROM, specific for my equipment, downloaded it and followed the instructions provided in the threads
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975893
followed the instructions, et cetera, deleted cache and ran the command fastboot erase system -w and, tried to flash the .zip file, handset recognised it, however displayed an error saying "no android info.txt" there were 3 messages total, all of them displaying the same file extension .TXT
I guess thats where I messed up big time... so whensoever you have a chance to reply let me know what could have been wrong..and pelase, let other geniuses out there in the forum whats going on and if they are willing to help me in this.
I will try to keep a concise log of the do's and dont's and what to do in case someone else share the same problem
thank you in advance to the XDA delopers team
So if I got it right, your phone is SIM unlocked but not bootloader-unlocked? Does it have "Unlocked" in the top left of the screen when booting?
If it does, I'd recommend installing MROM (not MROM-ICS as you suggested because that is a testing ROM). If the bt/wifi error happens there as well, then it is most likely a hardware failure and no software will help. In that case, I'd suggest trying a hardware method as described here.
If it doesn't, then I guess I'd try flashing a full SBF. Be warned however that flashing SBFs is potentially very dangerous, so be sure to read all the guides and select a SBF that is appropriate for your device (based on the OS version it had installed previously).

There aren't actually many options. Just download the latest ROM package (not the update) and the gapps package. Flash ROM then gapps. That is all.
Thanx

[Q] Help, Please? Galaxy S3 Phone Will Not Acknowledge Sim Card

Hi!
I have come to this forum many times for solutions to problems with my cell phones. And I did check for other similar issues to this, but since my situation is not exactly the same as the other posting I found on this topic, I wanted to ask for help with my specific issue.
Anyway, after going through a year of problems with my HTC Desire my b/f got me a Galaxy S3 for my birthday, (GT19300). It takes a micro-Sim which my old phone didn't so I cut down my old Sim and tried it in the Galaxy. All I could get was a message "No Sim card-Insert Sim Card." Naturally I figured an easy solution would be get a new Sim. My carrier is AT$T. I didn't want to go through the hassle of going to an AT$T store for a new micro-Sim and get bullied into a data plan etc. So I got a new regular sim from AT$T and cut it down, it fits perfectly. (I know the Sim card is fine because I tried it in another OLD crappy phone I have that takes a micro-Sim). However, in the Galaxy it just keeps having the same problem: "No Sim card/Insert Sim."
I've tried clearing the cache, I've tried updating, done factory restores, I've tried removing the batt and Sim etc, all the "easy" solutions, nothing has worked. I've tried the solutions posted on various threads here, nothing.
My b/f assures me the phone is unlocked since he did that himself before he gave it to me. I don't know if he tried using the phone or not, but I presume he did. So i don't see how the phone could still be locked.. And from what I've read IF the phone were still locked there would be a different message in regards to the Sim. Everything works on the phone just fine, EXCEPT it will not recognize a Sim card at all.
I read on another forum that Galaxy S3 users were having a lot of issues with their rooted phones that disappeared after they unrooted, soooo, if this is happening because my phone is still rooted, than obviously I don't really have a choice if I want to actually use this phone for something other than taking nice photos. Could the fact it's still a rooted phone be why it will not recognize a Sim??
Does anyone have any suggestions I can try to solve this problem? I have a feeling it's either a very easy fix or a major pain in the *bleep*. But either way, this is driving me crazy trying to solve the problem. I'd LOVE to be able to use this phone especially after my b/f paid good money for it, not to mention I've made-do with the HTC I had and all the issues it had for over a year.
Any ideas, tips, or suggestions would be most appreciated!
Thank you to anyone who replies!!!!!

Boom,
Thank you for the reply. I will try your suggestions. I take it this is a very common problem from what I've been reading. Though I cannot find a precise answer to what it could be. So I'll try your ideas for sure.
* I certainly hope your "signature" isn't referring to my post. I DID indeed look through the questions/threads/posts here before I posted. I spent probably 5 hours checking around for an answer... IF you are referring to my question, dude you just offended me terribly...I get where you're coming from though, but people just won't take the time to read through and look for answers before posting, it's that way on pretty much all forums, at least all the ones I've been on and that's A LOT. And if you read my post thoroughly you would have seen that I did mention searching through threads here and elsewhere before I posted.
No, my signature is not aimed at you -the words are from another user, but describe around 80% of the threads created here.

[Q] Spyware persists after 3 factory resets

Thanks for reading this and helping me sort this out.
****Edited to make it short and sweet**** Original below if you want more of the story
Had spyware on my phone from roommate, 100% sure.
Did factory resets, yet he was still getting into it right away (while I had phone in hand)
Got a refurb phone replacement for camera issue. Put old SIM card in new phone for an hour or more, thinking that it was safe.
HEAVILY suspect that it is infected again based on it's behavior and my roommates behavior.
-Should have made clear below that I was 100% on the initial infection surviving, but only highly suspicious for 2nd phone. (Based on his behavior and earlier today, the cursor would move while I was trying to type in my password and certain keys on the keyboard would not work randomly)
I just got a new sim card, unused still. Want to clean EVERYTHING possible. ROMs, kernels, everything. Need advice. Perhaps I am just paranoid for the second part but I don't think so and know the first phone resets not working is true. Thx

My soon to be ex-roommate and ex-"friend" has been spying on me with computer backdoors and spyware on my Droid Maxx (4.4.4-7) I am 100% on this, I can list the reasons why but judging from other threads in random sites, that would be a distraction. I will leave it at knowing special knowledge, his behavior and "real-time" reactions while I use the phone (clearing throat when I do certain things... now coughing since I told him he does that and he can't hold it back), everytime I reset the phone he slams the doors, caused my phone to hang up when I said "fraud" on the credit card phone system. Anyways it's legit. He did the same stuff for my computer he responded to what I typed in even and relayed what I searched for (gloating). He made random sounds play and throttled my PC speed to a crawl.
So I read elsewhere after the stuff with my phone continued to happen that there is software that can survive factory resets... I'm not sure if the ROM or kernel is the issue or some other firmware (relative noob compared to most of you) or if it is the SIM card which provides access. (if you think I am crazy look into it: since I can't post links search "Sim card apps defcon notes" and "the secret life of sim cards" also from Defcon. Also there is a somewhat related story about SIM cards being hacked in the beginning of most sim card hack searches)
He had one of his always precisely timed coughing fits when I started looking into SIM Tookit Hacks so I am suspicious of that. This was after getting a new phone (unfortunately I had the old SIM card in the new one for about an hour, I didn't know they were essentially little computers)
What do I do here? I have stock 4.4.4-7, no root (Droid Maxx is usually impossible to root currently). I have a new SIM card in but I'm afraid that now the new phone and the card are infected.
The computer software he used (backdoor/rootkits) Were mostly undetectable. I got lucky and detected only one backdoor, but later had rootkit activity detected but nothing found. I believe he has access to some new "zeroday" PC/Android software or at least it is pretty advanced. Perhaps the SIMcard has an applet that allows him to install the software over and over again since the card is not formated. This capability has been discussed in I believe both of the two first links.
I want to flash EVERYTHING. ROM, kernels, other firmware... Not sure how that could be done since I don't have root (maybe I am ignorant here) and many Verizon techs I have talked to think factory resets always work. Yes, this stuff is unlikely in general, but he has made a concerted effort to target me. Antivirus has been worthless.
I need to know 100% that everything is clean.
Thank you!
