[Q] Help, Please? Galaxy S3 Phone Will Not Acknowledge Sim Card - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I have come to this forum many times for solutions to problems with my cell phones. And I did check for other similar issues to this, but since my situation is not exactly the same as the other posting I found on this topic, I wanted to ask for help with my specific issue.
Anyway, after going through a year of problems with my HTC Desire my b/f got me a Galaxy S3 for my birthday, (GT19300). It takes a micro-Sim which my old phone didn't so I cut down my old Sim and tried it in the Galaxy. All I could get was a message "No Sim card-Insert Sim Card." Naturally I figured an easy solution would be get a new Sim. My carrier is AT$T. I didn't want to go through the hassle of going to an AT$T store for a new micro-Sim and get bullied into a data plan etc. So I got a new regular sim from AT$T and cut it down, it fits perfectly. (I know the Sim card is fine because I tried it in another OLD crappy phone I have that takes a micro-Sim). However, in the Galaxy it just keeps having the same problem: "No Sim card/Insert Sim."
I've tried clearing the cache, I've tried updating, done factory restores, I've tried removing the batt and Sim etc, all the "easy" solutions, nothing has worked. I've tried the solutions posted on various threads here, nothing.
My b/f assures me the phone is unlocked since he did that himself before he gave it to me. I don't know if he tried using the phone or not, but I presume he did. So i don't see how the phone could still be locked.. And from what I've read IF the phone were still locked there would be a different message in regards to the Sim. Everything works on the phone just fine, EXCEPT it will not recognize a Sim card at all.
I read on another forum that Galaxy S3 users were having a lot of issues with their rooted phones that disappeared after they unrooted, soooo, if this is happening because my phone is still rooted, than obviously I don't really have a choice if I want to actually use this phone for something other than taking nice photos. Could the fact it's still a rooted phone be why it will not recognize a Sim??
Does anyone have any suggestions I can try to solve this problem? I have a feeling it's either a very easy fix or a major pain in the *bleep*. But either way, this is driving me crazy trying to solve the problem. I'd LOVE to be able to use this phone especially after my b/f paid good money for it, not to mention I've made-do with the HTC I had and all the issues it had for over a year.
Any ideas, tips, or suggestions would be most appreciated!
Thank you to anyone who replies!!!!!
*I originally posted posted this in the wrong forum, thanks Audit!

First try a full wipe and flash latest stock with odin. Next replace the sim reader.

Boom,
Thank you for the reply. I will try your suggestions. I take it this is a very common problem from what I've been reading. Though I cannot find a precise answer to what it could be. So I'll try your ideas for sure.
* I certainly hope your "signature" isn't referring to my post. I DID indeed look through the questions/threads/posts here before I posted. I spent probably 5 hours checking around for an answer... IF you are referring to my question, dude you just offended me terribly...I get where you're coming from though, but people just won't take the time to read through and look for answers before posting, it's that way on pretty much all forums, at least all the ones I've been on and that's A LOT. And if you read my post thoroughly you would have seen that I did mention searching through threads here and elsewhere before I posted.

No, my signature is not aimed at you -the words are from another user, but describe around 80% of the threads created here.

[Q] my s2 won't read any sim card

hello ,
suddenly my s2 won't read any sim card and it's always on flight mode ! i tried to restart the phone and it didn't work , also tried to take the battery and the sim card off for a while and it didn't work also , i did factory reset still nothing.
- the sim card worked normally on another phone
- the phone is running on android 2.3.5 because we didn't get the ICS in the middle east for some reason.
- the phone is not rooted.
- kies doesn't recognize the phone anymore .
so how do i make it work ?
and sorry for the bad English because I'm not a native speaker .

Do one more factory restore but this time without Sim card and SD card.
Use the dial code to wipe.

Check first your IMEI is correct .
What do you mean by not read sim card network or you cannot read the data on the sim contacts etc .

the network doesn't work and i can't show the data , it basically tells me to "insert the sim card" so it's like the sim is not even in the phone at all.

Then it may not be you efs folder (IMEI!) becoming corrupted after all! Try cleaning the contacts on your sim & inside your phone & make sure none of the pins are bent or broken internally also, then try somebody elses sim card in your phone first before replacing your own! If your sim works in another phone then it's got to be something to do with the contacts/pins, as you haven't flashed your phone or anything to corrupt stuff in the first place!!

Annoyed with Android
I have the exact same symptoms except I did not play around with any software updates or “internal settings”. The memory on my phone was filled with photos I took over the weekend and some apps refused to start up because of the lack of memory. Probably the mistake, I took the SD card out to try to read it from my Win 7 notebook, because the “Gallery App” did not want to open to allow me to delete of some images to free up memory. (Well why not, most other equipment allow their SD cards to be read by Windows.)
Whatever the reason the phone is completely stuffed; the SD card is not recognised and that result in no phone connection!! The phone can't be used. This is absolutely ludicrous. One cannot sell equipment that can be made unusable this easily. I can understand maybe losing image/data on the SD card if I took it out, but now the entire phone is useless, and it seems (from other forums too) that it is quite a process to get the so-called IEMI folder back. I am really frustrated at this point and have a real annoyance with Android. Judging from the amount of hits returned after a Google search, this SD card problem is a fairly common one. I am not going to fix this; will rather get a new phone, one that works, and it will not be an Android phone. Yes I know hardcore Andriod followers will be all over my post, but just think a bit, this kind of problem should not happen and is really nonsense
(PS: People that moan about multiple postings, can't you just answer the question, even if there is another similar thread, do you have to nit pick on everything.)

- There is no need for you to start spamming this thread.
- Ask questions with common sense, that will help you get the much needed assistance.
- There no need for you to threaten anyone. If you are not going to buy Android device again, million more people will still buy it.
- You must understand that, people who give assistance here on XDA, do so without any monetary benefit. It's not your right to be given assistance, it's a privilege.
- Xda just like any other forum/organisation has rules and regulations, you must follow them.
- stop spamming around, it will only make things worse for you.

Apologies for the double messages. I tried to fix it numerous times, but it does not seem to take effect.
Jokesy, the fact people don’t get paid for commenting here is completely irrelevant; I also have a day job and don’t have 6 hours in the evening to get a phone to make a call. Pointing out severe problems with a product is not spamming.

Jokesy you sure are not very observant. You should have noticed the multiple messages were due to an editing problem. Report my post; hopefully an administrator can clear up the extra messages as sure as tax this editor cannot. Do you think for one moment I value membership of a site where some rude one-eyed geeks hang out?
To the $20 guy; the phone is not worth that much. I will probably not come back to this site, so it is pointless, but I would even mail the phone to you in its original box, free of charge, if I could.
could you please tell me how did he fix it? Because I apparently have the same problem!:crying:

Interesting...
I am in a similar situation with a t989 phone that doesn´t recognize my simcards.
Some days ago I tried to upgrade my phone to the latest official ICS using ODIN as KIES
was always giving disconnection errors before finishing the upgrade.
Finally I got my phone stuck at the download mode with an error message and a yellow warning triangle.
I thought I had a bricked phone, but fortunately I managed to recover it using an old
official ROM. The problems is that now it doesn´t recognize any simcard inserted.
The current installed software versions are:
Android 2.3.5
Base band: T989UVKID
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Compilation number: GINGERBREAD.UVKID

Hello please i just read your post and would need your advice, my S2 just stopped recognizing my Sim card yesterday night, i was playing a fast action game on my phone and the phone suddenly went off, when it came back on it did not recognize my Sim card any longer. I tired putting the same Sim in another phone and it worked but when i returned it to mine it still did not recognize my Sim, please can you tell me what to do with regards to this issue?

Important help needed -> Don't know if shutdown or freeze! App breakdown?

Simply putting this, i buyed a SGSII about a month ago, and since then it shutdows or freezes. I don't know what is wrong. I TRADED THE PHONE 3 TIMES!!! And all 3 times the phone has the SAME problem. It random shutdown/freeze(I don't know the difference). Theres almost 0% chance that the Vodafone store has 3 devices with teh exact same problem, when the 3rd SGSII i got(this one) is from a different package then the others....
So I ask here really kindly, who can help me if some1 already had some problem with some application I have installed. I leave here the screenshots of Google Play apps I have installed. Apart that i only have BBS.

Please understand me, I really want a phone that doesn't shutdow or freeze :/ I really need alarm for example in the morning and I can't even trust that to my phone since I can wake up and phone is just shutdown >,<
Update: Went 2 day again at the store, and they said that some faulty 4G SIM cards where causing problems(didnt specified which ones) and he traded me a new charger - This said, he told me that if problem still occurs to come talk to the sotre manager on monday...
If this helps, maybe it is causing the problem, if someone has this version of Android and reports it giving problems i would apreciate

Ill take it to the store then
So I went to Vodafone and first question they made was:
Have you changed your SIM card lately?
I todl them it had ~5years or something.
They said it may be the card.
I asked if this ever hapened.
They said never...
So i asked, if it never hapened why you say its because of SIM card?
---
And that was it. They told before anything I should change SIM and test if it still shuts down...
What you guys think? Anyways I'm gonna change SIM card to 4G one, since now Vodafone is obligating every1 to change, they gonna deactivate the old ones soon... Then i'm gonna see if phone goes down...
I just seems strange the phone goes down cause of SIM card with no signal or something... Anyone knows a answer to this?
Any1 knows osomething about this?

Dude, bumping your thread every couple of hours isnt going to achieve anything other then possibly it been closed or deleted.
Firstly people will reply when/if they have something to say. Second its New Years eve, most people are busy. Only reason why I'm not is because I'm not well at the moment so resting.
A sim card wouldnt make your phone shut down, hes talking crap. Also when you say "cant unlock" do you mean network unlock? If so then use the search button, we have plenty of topics on how to unlock network very easily, most/best are a simple app you install from market.
Don't take Vodafone's crap. Demand a replacement as the one they provided is faulty from day 1.
Try without a SIM too, this will prove that is not the problem.
Take Atheists advice and don't bump within a 24hr time frame, especially today/yesterday.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Are you sure on that? Seems they don't want to simply trade the phone, and wanna keep it for tests...
Though, 2 days passed and he doesn't shuts down...
Not entirely sure as I cannot test the phone myself but for a new phone to be playing up, it's not convenient and I would want a phone that works without crashing, especially from new.

Try to take off this cover with the magnet. I think that the magnet is interfering with the hardware which then causes the phone to shut down.

Must be a faulty hardware, is that store reliable?
A brand new device has to run super smooth, if not, store's fault.

Look dude, you have been told OVER and OVER again that it couldn't be the sim card causing phone to reboot. Its either your hardware like your phone or battery or its your software, ie your rom or apps installed.
Have you even bothered trying other sim cards?
Tried factory reset?
Have you tried other rom?
Have you tried other kernel?
Have you got refund and gone elsewhere?
Have you read any of the replies here or in your duplicate threads?

With all due respect it seems you don't read the replies you say you bother to answer...
1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
2- Since I have 14 days (and not the usual 30) to ready-exchange the device trying a SIM card won't be enough, since the phone can handle random time turned on without going down.
3/4 - I already changed the phone once, so same hardware flaw would be suspicioous since phones are tested and odds of getting a faulty hardware 2 times in a row with the exact swame faulty style is like 1/1000. Especially on recent SGSII.
5- Nope, i'm hoping i'll get a talk with Samsung(not vodafone) and talk to them if the third phone come with same problem.
6- Yes I did. But as I said on point 1) it seems you didn't read mines I asked for someone that has a sim card knowledge, since phones in the past DID shutdown due to low network/loss of signal causing phones to shutdown. But as I said to the Vodafone guy, i think its strange that a new phone such as most smartphones are to shutdown cause of SIM card beeing old/loosing signal with this 4G thing. But since i traded for this new SGSII and the SAME problem is hapening i tend to beleive is the SIM. Though I already asked Vodafone to send me a 4G card and if I get the third SGSII I will try to test the full 14 days I have to see if its the SIM card thats causing something or not.
Apart all of this, if any1 faced the same problem please tell me something(most likely will be from Portugal, who knows).

You haven't mentioned changing Roms or Kernels.
This to me sounds like a software issue.
This is not a Sim card issue!!!.
It might be wrong current or voltage issues, but this being a new phone would lead me straight back to it being a software issue.
I have a Galaxy S2 for over a year and had a load of random reboots or shutdowns. It always was a kernel issue, update to the latest or downgrade to the most stable always fixed it. So my advice try to fix the software before blaming the hardware. Try different kernels, Roms and if you are still having the problem then it is a hardware issue. Flash a stock Rom back on and your phone should still be under warranty. Goodluck
BTW this is hilarious: 1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
That sounds like a Rom or Kernel problem. First thing I would check! Are you sure that it shut downs rather than just freezing?
Also I just noticed your on 4.0.4 there is problems with the version of android

He's been advised now multiple time in multiple topics to try new kernel or rom but he just keeps simple ignoring the advise or dismissing it and seems to be convinced its his sim card for some odd reason.
If he wants to create multiple topics asking for help (have them closed/deleted) and then ignore the advise and then wonder why he still has same issues then its his own fault and his own problem.

keeps rebooting when sim card in

Hi all,
I'm new to this site and am kinda desperate.... I have trouble with my SGH-i717... whenever sim card is in, the device keeps rebooting.... I tried changing the whole sim card reader and no effect on the problem.... Device is now rooted (did it with odin) still no effect... I also tried sim card in other device and it works fine.... Running out of idea here and I'm kinda noob with this... Phone juste came out of warranty by the way and still stuck with 1 and a half year on my damm contract.. So I'll have to buy new phone or pay a 400$ penality for breaking contratc... dammit !!!!
:crying::crying::crying::crying:
Also, the phone has to be kept plugged in (to computer or wall plug) otherwise it keeps rebooting even when sim card is not in...
take a look at this thread if you haven't tried searching. I know you are new and probably looking for any fix. you cant panic here. your going to have to search and read.
in the thread I posted, or any thread, pay attention to the stats of some of the folks posting. you may pay attention to some of the more experienced folks.
I don't know some of the specifics as you did not mention. many factors come into play. you will see talk of what carrier..... it is important
what rom are you currently running or have installed?
how clean is your process of flashing?
how experience are you?
some in the thread are talking about modem......as one posted, "changing your modem is not going to fix problem", he is correct.
I have ran into many problems, only saw SIM message show when I had no SIM in phone. always the failsafe solution has been returning to stock and start over.
you would not be the first person to rush off and think, "im flashing my phone, look at me, im cool". doesn't work like that.
I have always been the more cautious one. I read and make sure I understand. I have all my files in place. heck, I have evan rehearsed the process.
sound stupid???
maybe so, but I have yet to have a problem I couldn't figure out.
could be a "fix permissions" issue
could be a "format system" issue
some developers have specific instruction for flashing their rom, any deviation could cause a myriad of problems.

[Q] Galaxy S3 recieving no mobile signal

Hey guys,
I've been having a problem recently that i'm rather stumped about, i've been trying to fix it for the past few days, looking pretty much everywhere on the net for a fix but this is pretty much a last resort before i take it to a random shop and have them attempt to fix it.
So basically i had a galaxy S3, it broke and a close friend of mine had one sitting around gathering dust so he gave it to me to use. The problem is that for some reason this phone refuses to get any mobile signal. It connects to my WiFi without issue however it always has no service and says it can only perform emergency calls. At first i figured it may have just been my SIM card so i've tried it with 3 different SIM cards with 3 different network carriers (I've been informed that the phone is definitely network unlocked too) i've tried to manually connect to the network through the mobile network settings but that seems to bring me no luck either. The phone was rooted and whatnot but i've attempted to flash a stock ROM onto it to see if it was a ROM issue but that seems to have done nothing to help. Now i'd consider myself rather tech savvy but i'm a novice when it comes to tinkering with mobiles so any help or advice you guys could give to possibly resolve my issue would be greatly appreciated.
After writing this and performing one last search so that i don't make a complete fool of myself i've stumbled upon modem flashing so this may be something that i attempt but i'm currently trying to figure out how it all works. If you need any more information i'll happily get back to you as quickly as i can.
Quick things to close up to save time: It's running 4.3. It has an IMEI number matching that on the box. Everything else on the phone working 100% just not able to get mobile signal. Not currently rooted.
EFS folder corruption is the usual cause of network issues, baring hardware problems.

After looking into it the EFS folder seems more related to IMEI issues which i do not have. As for the hundreds of other posts i've looked through plenty but many of them are unresolved, the problem is unrelated to mine or i've tried the proposed solutions inside. I've been told the phone worked perfectly, he just switched it out because he had a note to use instead. So i'm not sure if it'd be a hardware issue and i'm not exactly sure of how to diagnose that either. However, if you know of a post that has a lot of proposed solutions i'd be more than happy to read through it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Internet not working properly

Hello guys. I bought a second hand Note 8 from a classmate a week ago. It was at a good price so I went for it. The internet was not working properly in it, it would just stop working for around 20 seconds and then start working again, i thought it might be because of the rain or something but after using it for 4 days I thought something was fishy. I put my sim into another phone and Internet worked perfectly good and normal, i put in different sim cards into my note 8 but the internet issue remained. In the settings it showed N950F. I put in it Download mode and noticed that its not N950F, Its N950N, I googled it and it turned out to be a korean model. I did deeper digging and found out its been converted to dual sim N950F by flashing a Custom rom. I told him all this and asked my money back to which he told me he spent it all. Now i'm stuck with this phone. I feel like i have wasted my hard earned money. I searched online found videos on youtube but i did not try them fearing my note 8 may get hard bricked or worse. Now i am not sure if it is a hardware issue or a bug in the custom rom, I am just assuming it's because of the custom rom. Please help me out. It's a korean model Note 8 256gb. If there's a way where i can keep the dual sim funtionality and get my internet issues fixed, I would love that, if that's not possible, then just fixing the internet issues would be much appreciated too. Thank you very much.

Have you tried checking to see if the APN settings are correct for your sim? That could fix it.
You could just flash stock filmware for the device, which can be found on "Sammobile" or "Updato" but would obviously return it back to single sim.

Yes I tried the APN settings, there was nothing wrong there.
The problem is, flashing the original stock rom might restrict my network connections to Korea only. It might not have other languages as well. If you have any other suggestions please tell me, if you know someone who might, kindly mention him.
Thank you for replying.

I wish I knew other suggestions to offer, but I am limited in my knowledge, especially with issues like this. Not something I have encountered before. I can't find an answer on Google to see if you would be okay using your sim on the Korean variant.
Hopefully someone more knowledge will answer, if you don't get a reply, just keep bumping the thread.

Thank you. Yes I'll keep bumping it.
I had a problem with data and MMS not working. It's silly but make sure with your APN type is "default, dun, supl, mms". Mine was blank and wouldn't work without putting that in.
Good luck.

Thanks, I'll try that.
I would take your device to the high street branch of your Service Provider and let them take a look at it. It is probably the Network Settings which need to be configured on your device.

I tried that. It didn't work. I Flashed a different Custom ROM, the problem still remained. I'll flash stock ROM and see what happens.
