win 7 doesnt recognize device - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ive had this problem ever since verizon updated me to 4.3
Im wanting to root my phone and install a custom rom and move it to straight talk but how can i safely do anything when my pc hardly ever recognizes my phone?
Ive tried the usb that came with my note 2, tried 2 other usb cables that came with s3's
Tried every usb port on the computer
tried uninstalling keis
uninstalling samsung driver
reinstalling driver
reinstalling keis
rebooting while plugged in
nothing works.
My pc recognizes every other phone i plug into it.... im so fedup with this.
Any ideas?

A couple basic questions. Have you tried a separate PC? Do you have USB debugging enabled? Do you get any indication of your phone being charged when plugged into a port? Can you plug into a wall fine? Lastly what are you planning to do transfer files etc?
EDIT. Going to bed. Will check on thread in the am.

ya, just wanting to move my pics and stuff to my pc.... dont really care to backup anything else.
Just soooo ready to get rid of this crap bloatware and start fresh on a custom rom.
I know here that roms cant be suggested but any opinions on a stable rom that one could install and not have to worry about updating?

If you accepted the ota then sadly you won't be able to unlock then bootloader and flash a recovery or ROMs. You may be able to gain root but at this point and for the foreseeable future there will be no way to unlock 4.3. :/

Look around some of the threads I remember a few people conforming a couple root methods. Too tired to go thread searching right now though. Removing bloat with just root works alright but you have to be more careful than someone who is unlocked would have to be. As for selling I can't fine much insight on that unfortunately.

I bought this phone and got on a family members plan, was on it for a year and always paid my part but now she owes a bunch to verizon and is letting the account get shut down.
I know that the phone is carrier unlocked and planned on putting my straight talk sim in and setting my apn. Will this work or will verizon be able to put a lock on my phone?
I know this is thin ice territory but i paid 300 on this phone and now loosing service because she didnt pay her part of the bill, id rather just move the phone to straight talk , is there any foreseeable issues with this plan?

please help on my last post :{

Can tech support tell if I'm rooted over the phone?

I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?
Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.
As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.
I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.
When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....
What ROM are you using ?

If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

Don't know how they do it, (simple user here) and not the first time I've seen this asked or answered. If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. (No ins here) Call technical support and ask them what rom your on and how dare they know that.

Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

Hmm keep looking, I won't be at a pc till tomorrow maybe. But like I said I have no way to confirm only what I've read which is what I do. And that was second hand information. As most of this is. I'm really trying to remember because I know these site searching's are lacking at best.
I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.
That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

Can you get the phone into download mode?
To do this, pull the battery out (to make sure the phone is completely off), plug it in, hold the volume-down and home buttons then turn it on while holding those buttons.
If you can get it into download mode, then it should be possible to reflash the proper firmware using Odin.
Or at least, that's how things went when I had my Samsung Vibrant. I've only owned my S3 for a day.

Sorry, you're qhsusb_dload (aka hard) bricked. I've spent about 3 days trying to fix mine after I bricked it flashing a kernel on a bad port of cwm. If I had a working S3 and another 3 days I might be able to un-hardbrick it, but yeah, will just be exchanging it as soon as they come back in stock.

Just take it to Sprint but don't tell em you was trying to download a custom rom.. Simple they probably don't know the issue yet until more people start taking they brick phones in because they tried to root..
I think you overpaid for your paperweight . Yes, I feel a little cruel for making a joke about someone who just lost $600, but you do still have a chance at exchanging it at Sprint. Bricking a phone is every custom rom users worst nightmare, but that's probably your best option. Good luck.
Same Probelm...Sort of
Yeah I did the same thing I think, tried to flash a kernel via cwm, said operation aborted...ok....so I reboot it and now it wont turn on, cant get it in download mode. Weird thing is though when i plug it in to my computer and hold down the power button, while nothing happens to my phone my computer will continuously make the connect disconnect sound like my phone is turning on for a nano second.
and if my phone is plugged in with battery out red charge light comes on, so I know something is going on in there.
any thoughts on how/if I can fix....
Yeah I may be a crook. But I would take the battery out and stick the headset in the microwave for about 3 seconds. You have insurance on it. Do what you got to do. They lie, cheat, and steal every chance they get.

Sorry, you're hard-bricked. As I mentioned in a previous post, your phone is in "qhsusb_dload" mode, which is a Qualcomm firmware flashing mode. If you look in your Device Manager, that's what you'll see your computer is detecting. There's absolutely nothing you can do at this point as no one outside Qualcomm/Samsung has the proper tools/files to recover from this state.

A compatible jig may be your only solution if you can't get into download mode manually. A jig would force the phone into download mode, once in download mode you'd be able to flash the stock AT&T firmware through Odin.

If you didnt know a rom could brick a phone you shouldnt be flashing period. Theres always ALWAYS bold letters that says this may brick your phone an or we are not responsible if this breaks your phone... no one with there first android should be flashing till they know android smoothly... *sigh*
Usually 90% of the time your always able to get into recovery mode. From what I've read this only happens when flashing the omega Rom. People make mistakes.

I understand telling him to read. And he did so for about a week. He succesfully used odin to root his phone. A few days later he said he wanted to Rom, and asked me how to do a proper back up with titanium backup. I ran him through the backup procedure.
I mean I totally thought that if he made it through the rooting procedure that he was good to go. Rom'ing has always been to me something fairly easy, and if something went haywire, just boot to recovery.
I've had people ask for help that flashed an incomplete or corrupted download, but have always been able to at least power the phone on, or at the very least have it recongnized in adb.
I have been reading and googling about a fix, but information seems minimal on this current circumstance. So I reached out to the community for advice.

Follow the instructions on this thread. It will install the official ICS unrooted from AT&T. Shutdown and pull out your battery to find your S/N number listed on your phone and write it down. The model is AT&T I717 when asked. Skip the part in 4 (a) when told to pull out the battery and continue with instructions. Here are the instructions;

Follow the instructions on this thread. It will install the official ICS unrooted from AT&T. Shutdown and pull out your battery to find your S/N number listed on your phone and write it down. The model is AT&T I717 when asked. Skip the part in 4 (a) when told to pull out the battery and continue with instructions. Here are the instructions;

I started doing this but got an error at 15% saying operation timed out. Almost **** my pants, thought I bricked my device. Restarted and its still working. Kinda nervous about doing this now....
I don't see why you would give the seller a bad rating, kies gave me tons of timeout errors, unzip errors, and errors in downloading yesterday. Samsung live chat rep told me it doesn't work right with a lot of computers.
And honestly its so much easier now that there are flashable zips in development forum i don't know why you would bother with kies, its worthless a few hours after the new firmware is out. If you want uclf6 just download flappjaxx rooted with fj tools

I really don't want to void my warranty or risk bricking my device. I just want the updated firmware for my carrier. There must be some way to fix or revert the unlock...

First thing give him bad rating. Second thing call the carrier and describe your situation. (overseas) maybe you're military maybe not. If you are they should have some leeway with you. If not pretend you are to see if you can get away with it.

I also unlocked my Telus branded note and kies will not consider an update - i know its not out yet but my device is no longer "supported" however my phone still thinks its telus and i have no doubt that i will still get an OTA update from them when it is released. A bit of research from other devices shows that usually the phone is still on the old carriers books...
for those who had your phone unlocked by the guy on ebay, is it safe to do (i.e, the remote accessing your pc part)? are there any other problems with the phone other than kies not recognizing the phone? I am considering getting it unlocked w/ this guy on ebay.
unlock and update
hi guys, i unlocked my att note, with a dude on ebay, he just send me the unlock code after 3 hrs, and charges me for 24.99 kind of expensive but a sure thingh, i did the ics update the same day that goes out, and my phone has no troubles until now, i just have to download the newest kies, because the old one of my infuse wasnt the same and not work with the note...
ruxxo
Kies is far from perfect. Contact Samsung live chat and all they will give you to troubleshoot your issue is "try on different computer"
There isn't much risk in trying to download the ota update from the phone, but honestly its easier to use the odin flashable zip that was posted in general section don't remember which thread. That's what i did the night it was released and it went smooth.

Just follow instructions that the other guy posted with typing in serial and model. Timeout is common even on stock locked note I got it many times before it succeeds to complete the download.

Launch KIES.
Plug Phone in.
Under tools select Firmware Upgrade and Initialization
When it asks you, put in the SN and model (model is SGH-I717) and install the upgrade
You won't be unlocked, or rooted, but thats easy as well.

I think he was suggesting that the guy might be military and that's why he had to get his phone unlocked for overseas use. Regardless using this method is fine; I had mine done this way and haven't ever had issues. I'm not sure where it is, but the last ODIN I can find is for UCLD3 ICS leak found here. There's got to be a UCLF6 one floating around somewhere...
Post 22 has link to odin flashable zip for uclf6 stock no root no cwm i believe

I bought an unlock from a guy on eBay. He remoted into my PC and did something to unlock it. It worked fine overseas, but now that Im back I want to upgrade to ICS but Keis says the device can not be recognized. What are my options here? I don't really care if I keep the unlock or not.
Thanks

dude, your best bet is to NOT update to ICS. take a look at the thread I started asking people what issues they're having since updating to ICS. there are a lot of problems and if you don't want one of them you should just stay on Gingerbread.
No problems for me.
And it was only $8 bucks.
He emailed me after I paid.
It was at 3am. Took like 10 minutes.

I don't think the note will get ota ics update
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
NO, it will not be getting OTA update. The ONLY way to update the note to ICS is via Kies (or rooting and voiding warantee).
Nothing is wrong with your device or computer. You have to remember that the servers that Kies connects to are being hammered right now, and you have to try & try again to make sure that you have a good connection. I had to try it 3 times before I got the update to ICS via Kies. It's NORMAL because everyone that received that text on the note are trying to update to the latest version.
So, be patient, sit back, have some cake, and just follow the directions I posted for updating via kies. Here's the link for those of you that don't know it, didn't find it, or didn't search for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654
Now, update, enjoy ICS and have a nice day.
P.S. For the record, I have had no issues with this update, and it's performing wonderfully.

[Q] ME7 exploit status?

I hate to ask this, but, I am curious as to the status of the VRUAME7 bootloader unlocking. I haven't seen any status updates since the bounty thread was closed. I'm aware root has been achieved, but seeing as I just got my S4, I'd like to experiment with different roms a bit.
Thanks.
Agree
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. If anyone has any information about this that would be awesome!
I hope soon - with over $5k in bounty, it shouldn't take long. LOL
It better be soon because I'm so sick of not having TWRP lol. 5k bounty should be more than enough!

Agreed.
I'm debating whether or not to return this for an MDK version, because I really don't want to wait for shipping, and I've been really impressed with the S4 coming from an iPhone.
I think I'll just wait.

I came from an iPhone 5 too and tbh I'm glad I did I love this phone and I was on MDK when I got it but I updated like a dumbass. Not knowing that I had just sealed my fate for ever having custom ROMs and recovery. Oh well.

Hi im new to the forums and pretty knew to modding phones, but i was wondering the status of this as well? and when any of the developers here on the forum think that maybe the bootloader will be unlocked? A family member passed away so i kinda of inherited the phone and i want to use it since its newer and better than mine but they had updated it to ME7 so im stuck now i guess until they can crack it Also i wanted to ask if since that might take a while, if its possible to like reset the phone to factory settings and would it put it back to MDK maybe? or is there a way to like flash it back to MDK or something so i would be able to root/unlock the bootloader then? If not its fine i guess ill have to wait. But i had cynogen on my old phone (the original droid lolz) and it was awesome so i was hoping i could put that on the S4 as well and get rid of all this crap bloatware on it too. Well thanks a lot for all your work nice to be part of the community now, so i hope they keep working on this and keep us updated ^_^

I tried to flash it back thinking it might work but it didn't all it did was fail and leave me without a phone until I flashed ME7 again.

ahh damn that sux sry that happend lol. soo much for that idea i guess lol T_T what about restoring it to factory settings like through the option on the phone itself? Will it just like reset and wipe everything but not rollback the version? Thanks for your response and with the bounty being so high and they managed to get a root for it pretty quickly i really hope they can unlock the bootloader so we can put custom roms on it soon :/
Useless thread...
Don't you think the news will be all over XDA if anyone does unlock the bootloader of the S4?
Hint: It's not because they haven't managed to unlock it yet and probably never will.

You do realize an exploit similar to Loki would do the same thing an unlocked bootloader can do?

Is it possible a future update may unpatch it?

It's just as likely as the oceans completely evaporating overnight.

The best we can hope for out of future updates is that they have a vulnerability that's easier to find than whatever's still waiting to be discovered in ME7 (if any such vulnerability is hiding there).

Yes and you do realize me winning the Powerball 25 consecutive weeks is more likely?
I believe in the devs here, many are working on it and too much time has passed w/o results, I believe if some exploit were possible it would have been found by now.
Sorry to be pessimistic but I think Samsung got it locked permanently and forever and, sorry to say it, but this probably means all future devices will arrive permanently locked down. :crying:
I'd sure love to be wrong about this.....

the motos got unlocked over 6 months after release, and that was considered by many to be completely impossible. Seeing this phone is more popular I think the chances are better, just will take time!
I put in an RMA with Negri electronics, and they're going to exchange mine for an MDK phone. Really should have done my research before updating...
