[Q] Old data after upgrade to CM11 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just recently upgraded from stock 4.1.2 to CM11 M3. I did backed up all the important data and programs, did wipe+reset, everything went fine and i really enjoy CM11, but there's a problem. I see all of my old data in /data/media and it takes a lot of space in my phone. I tried to deleting serate folders inside but Root File Manager crashes when attempting to do so. Is there anything i can do with it?
Thanks.

Instead of deleting have you followed this guide about moving folders >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/info-flashed-4-2-sdcard-data-t2274218 << if still having problems use another root explorer or if you backed up everything just format internal sd card ( You may need to flash a new rom again make sure it is on external sd card).

Everything on ExSD Card inaccessible after installing new ROM?

Hi I recently flashed my Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 with the Resurrection Remix ICS v.1.9.1 ROM and everything went fairly well except that my external sdcard looked like it had been totally erased. While this was irritating it was not devastating (had a backup) but when i attached my sgs2 to my computer to copy the backup back to the sdcard i noticed that everything was there, i hadn't lost a single file. I went back and looked at the card via my phone and it still looks empty but i did notice (after further inspection) that it is almost full. I checked to make sure view hidden files was enabled, it was, but still nada (using OI File manager and File Explorer). I got no ideas would really appreciate any ideas on what i might do to fix this issue.
Cheers,

Hi, thanks for the quick reply but i had tried those things (I shoulda mentioned that, sorry). I have tried combinations of use internal storage and MTP but still not able to see the contents of the exsd card (haven't had problems seeing the card itself, just the contents on the card).
Cheers,
-Gaiko
copy the contents of the sdcard to your computer, and format the sd card from your phone. Try again.

hi I tried to format it then copy a few things back on it but strangely it still shows up like it did before, that is, before there was one lone/empty folder that showed up (nothing else showed up through android, but i could see it via windows) but after i formated it, this folder (named "AudioBooks" that i had made before) still shows up when i try to look at the cards contents via android. This folder does not show up in windows, and nothing new that i copy to the card shows up in Android still.
Is there perhaps some sort of cache that i should clear as it seems to be showing me "bits from the past" (though also strange how it only shows me that audiobooks folder and not any of the 5 other folders that i had on there previously).
Any thoughts/ideas would really be appreciated!
-Gaiko
Maka a backup and restore original rom, and see if the problem persists. If not, you should notify a bug to Resurrection Remix rom developer.
Similar problem
I have had a similar problem. Been using RR last few months and all been good. Since I updated to RR 2.2 could not access my internal SD card. I had a few backups and as soon as I restored 2.1 viola everything's fine.
Tried using Siyah 3.2.7.2 and 3.3.1 kernels with no luck.
Have tried wiping everything and doing a fresh install with 2.2 but same issue. Did you have any luck?

Transfer app data to extsdcard

Hey all
I got my S3 a couple of weeks back.. Used it amazing phone... Rooted it... Flashed slim bean... Flashed official Indian JB 4.1.1
And onto it right now
The thread heading!! With all this flashing the internal memory wipes out. And backing it up every time would be a hassle.
I have come from the galaxy ace where the app data would be stored in the ext sd card so there's no chance of loosing all the data... Like WhatsApp images preferences of apps... I actually lost my entire titanium backup
Had to restore manually
Any way I can transfer app data to extsdcard?
I have root and busybox.

Nope, can't move data from internal memory to extSD on S3 i9300 or i9305. It's a major flaw on Samsung's part imo.
There's an app developed by slig, it's called DirectoryBind that will allow you to move data across to your extSD. Works like a charm for 90% of games e.g. Gameloft where extra data can be over 500MB. I'm using DirectoryBind and it's works well, never had an issue, in fact only found one game out of thirty so far that I couldn't bind.
Note: if you use DirectoryBind you'll need to bind each app/game separately, you can't bind a folder like android/obb or android/data thinking it will automatically move the new installs across, this must be done per install.
If you just wanna move apk's across, then Link2SD will also work, but it won't transfer gama data.
Thanks for the reply
I'll try the directorybind
So now how do you manage flashing without losing data?
It's a big bummer :banghead:

I haven't flashed yet, only rooted. I am considering flashing Pandoriam...
So about not losing data... I use MyBackup Pro and would most likely use it when I flash a new rom on my i9305...
If you move data across to your extSD with DirectoryBind, you can backup your config. in DirectoryBind, flash without losing the extSD data and then re-install your APKs and restore your config. backup in DirectoryBind... then you're back where you left off when you start any of the APKs from your launcher, they'll pull the data from the DirectoryBind (extSD) straight away.
Not sure if this answers your question? Another alternative would be to backup the data you'd like to keep with Titanium Backup.

Make sure you set your backup location in Titanium Backup to the external SD (like "/mnt/extSdCard/Titaniumbackup/").
The same for CWM backup data : do it on external SD. If you create ,ZIP compressed images, you have to transfer this manually to ext SD.
Once in a while (before a ROM-flash) I launch FTP-Server on my SG3 and transfer all data to my PC through WIFI.
Wireless FTP is no hassle, no wires, and the fastest way to transfer lots of data from phone to PC. (I get 8500kB/s transfer rate).
Also, buy a 64 GB SD !
+1 pat 357, that's exactly how I backup my stuff .
Regarding the possibility of transferring the data to the micro sd card this is what I did after having tried apps2sd (doesn't work) & directory bind (imo was quiet unstable and tiresome).
Basically, you're going to make your phone believe that your sdcard is actually your internal & vice versa. Of course, using this tweak will really only make sense if you own either a 32 or higher micro sd card. I run it on the latest jelly bean 4.1.1 (rooted, obviously) samsung official stock rom and works like a charm coupled to a class 10 64GB sd card. I use the initial 16GB (now consiered as external sd for the phone) for music or any kind of media file I feel like having around.
What I did was a fresh install : wipe dalvik cache/factory reset...then flash Rom; Root&install CWM; flash kernel (I used SiyahKernel S3-v1.7 available here) through CWM; flash tweak (ExtSD2internalSD) through CWM. Ticks like a clock ever since then.
Hope this helped, if it did, enjoy and of course, thanks a million to mattiadg for this amazing tweak.

Android 4.3 storage issue

I installed various Android 4.3 ROMs (Carbon, SliemBean, PA, CM), and in all of them the internal and external storage did not work, but I saw that other people it does not happen anymore.
Is there a solution for this?
Is this a common problem for the 4.3 ROMs? Common among xt910 and xt912? Affecting both internal and external storage? Always? At random? Or any rhyme or reason?
Sent from my MB865 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I am also having issues with when I mount my phone as a USB storage device on my PC. The phone abruptly unmounts whenever I start file transfer. I am using PA 3.99 JB 4.3 rom. I will appreciate any help.
I also need help on this thread. Thank you all: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45217945#post45217945
"insufficient storage" after ROM flash
I just flashed android 4.3 ROM on my phone (phone is Infuse 4g, ROM is CM10.2 - 8/30/2013 - Butter)
after I have restored most of my apps w/ data using Titanium Backup, I don't have any storage left (according to notifications and phone storage information - couldn't update apps, and several apps couldn't be restored (restore process stopped at 94%)
when I go to settings > storage, there's message "Storage space is running out", Total space shown for internal storage is 1.28GB, Available is 9.44MB,
however, when I connect to computer it shows that I still have more then 9GB available on the internal storage.
when I was flashing ROM, I had to go back to ICS ROM, (I've lost root access ), then 4.2 Rom, then 4.3. it warned me that it will re-partition my storage, and I may lose any data - I agreed, as I had everything backed up. now I don't really have a storage
I assume it has something to do with partitioning, but I have no Idea how to fix it, or what is the best way go around it. please help.

I have a xt910 umts_spyder, internal sd card works on first boot
after the second boot the internal sd card stops working, external sd is working normal
happens with every 4.3 ROM, I already tried to reformat the internal Storage using a 4.3 ROM
Also note that they don't mount in /mnt anymore but in /storage as sdcard0 and sdcard1.

thanks. I didn't see that same problem was listed already. will try to wipe cache/dalvic cache as it is suggested there. will report results later
it's really weird that nobody mentioned this problem on the developer's forum.

I've been using PACman V06 for a week or so now, no problems whatsoever. ext SD and USB mounting have been flawless.
As for the internal storage issue, when using Stock rom slot, or using a completely unaltered phone, the stock rom recognizes the entire internal storage, as the only partitioning are the internal storage, and the stock system partition. When you create a new slot, that rom only recognizes the partition it was created on as valid storage. This is to prevent changes to other rom slots inadvertently, I believe.
I have this issue only with some apps, titanium backup, root explorer are able to identify my intetnal. Last night I connect my phone to pc and the pc sometimes see my internal and sometimes the pc doesnt recognizes my internal...I use Slimbean for a week now. Its been doing great exept this internal thing. External storage is well recognized
Hello me...its me again...

I have wiped cache/dalvic cache as it was suggested before... twice... didn't help at all
also, in the CWM Recovery I saw that sdcard0, sdcard1, datadata, system and data are "unmounted"... I have mounted them all, but it didn't make any difference either (I'm not sure if it would even make any difference, or these mount/unmount setting is only for CWM Recovery, because on the next boot into CWM everything but cache is unmounted again
any other idea on what can be done to fix it?
here's another update.
I've flashed different 4.3 ROM ([ROM][JellyBean][4.3][Official]BeanStalk Build 4.3.1015 - Updated 10/27/2013 - 4.3) - same issue. next day I went back to stock, and formatted everything I could (all but "android secure") - it didn't help either. Now I have Ginger Bread, with same partitioning problem - about 1.2 GB for system and apps, and about 13 GB for everything else (I removed microSD card for now.)
I used to have all apps in one spot, and they would take a lot more space then 1.2 GB... now I cannot restore all of them from backup (Titanium Backup Pro), as there is not enough space.
I don't remember having such partitioning before I flashed it with 4.3 ROM
any suggestion? have I missed anything?

here's good reply on this problem from another forum:

the infuse is older than the galaxy nexus so theres no datamedia or mtp. the 16gb storage is typically called the internal sdcard (nonremovable) because it acts more like an sdcard and doesnt share partition and storage with the data partition. the data partition is called internal storage, which on the infuse is about 2gb, though a little less on cm10.2 because the system partition was made bigger for newer versions of android. if your having low storage issues on the data partition, youre going to probably have to move some of your apps to the internal 16gb sdcard by going into settings > apps > on sd card and moving some of them over. i would not recommend moving over apps that sync or run in the background, but if you have a lot of games, those typically move fine. i would do that until you have atleast 400mb of the internal storage free. ive talked to araemo in irc how hard it would be to setup datamedia on the infuse to combine the internal sdcard and data partition. long story short, rather difficult and it would be too big a hit on performance.

to support this, here's my story: I have already went back to Froyo, and saw that internal storage is 1.8 GB, now I'm back to 4.3 ROM, and it's 1.26 again
looks like I always had it all partitioned, but I haven't noticed it until system partition got changed and internal storage became smaller.
it might not be true for all other phones, as they can be partitioned differently, but it's true for samsung infuse, and probably for a number of other samsung phones.
I have tried CM10.2 , PA RC-2 , slimbean , and even carbon 4.3 but none of these roms detect my internal storage

the problem also appears on CM11 (Android 4.4)
i need to wipe the /cache partition bevore every boot
then it mounts the storages, but if i don't wipe it it won't mount the internal storage
so the problem has to be on the /cache partition?
Hi,
I though this issue was happening only with the 4.3 based ROMs but that still happens even with CM 10.2 ROM.
That failure is not happening all the time, sometimes you just need to wait after the boot and there is the ext-sd again.
yes i think it happens very sporadically
I've got the sdcard unmounted issue with all android4.3 roms that i've tried. Device is XT910 and recovery was BMM 0.3.4. I will use the phone with safestrap 3.65 for a while to check if it's a rom or recovery thing.

[Q] device storage showing minus when trying to open gallery

My i9300 is nealy unusable. The first sign of trouble was a error message trying to open gallery on 4.1.2. I then flashed latest omegarom after wipeing everything didnt solve the problem just gives a better description.
"There is not enough space (-5371MB) in your device memory. Delete some files" In settings the internal storage has 5.36GB free. I have been trying out a few different roms over the last few days but have always full wiped.
Now a lot of my apps force close on launch. How can my internal storeage be showing to some apps as a minus but the system gets the correct free space. I did have a play around with ExtDs2InternalSd v5 but decided to to swap back.
Hope someone can help me..Thanx in advance..

Then this is your problem did you follow proper uninstall instructions for ExtDs2InternalSd v5 >> If you want to remove the mod with a file explorer with root ability, delete the file 11extsd2internalsd from etc/init.d folder <<
If that does not work you will need to flash new rom and full wipe..

You should've wiped the internal storage too. Sometimes, what happens is that on flashing a new rom without wiping the internal storage, the contents of internal storage move to some other directory. So, when you'll browse the root of internal storage ( /0 ), you won't find the data there, nor the pics and videos will be shown in gallery or some video player; but the files are still there on internal storage.
So there's two things you can do:-
1) Use any root file manager, like ES explorer, to manually locate the folder. I think its somewhere in the /storage or in the /mnt/user or any other directory. But, its confirmed that it will be in mnt or storage directory only. If found, you can delete the data or copy it back.
OR
2) You can boot into twrp. Make a backup of current rom. Wipe everything including internal storage. And then restore the backup. This is much easier but time consuming, i guess.

Actually after last flashing (cm12.1), I wiped the internal storage (and sdcard too). But still I can't install a single app after the counting of 9. Maybe your size of data partition have changed. I thibk there's an option in twrp to resize the partitions. But, I can't suggest you doing it, since I haven't performed it myself. You can try in your own risk though.

I told you, the data has got to be somewhere in the /mnt or /storage directory. It has many sub-directories and you have to check all of them.
And, btw, I have this path /mnt/user/0/ which has some symlink to internal memory.
