Bit of a noob question but I'm new to android.
How does syncing work. For example, I'm at home connected to my wifi. Screen is of and so wifi not connected, will my device six using WIFI, i.e use the wifi connection when a sleep or will it use mobile data ?

If you're connected to wifi and set wifi sleep policy to always on, it will use wifi.

And what if policy is set to keep wifi on during sleep - only when plugged in? I'm assuming now then that throughout the day I'm using my mobile data to sync whilst the phone is sleeping (screen of) even whilst I'm at home and my wifi is available

My X10a (upped to 2.1 as an X10i on ATT) does not automatically try to use an available WiFi network (WiFi on) when browsing the internet. It eats up data from my plan. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?
Yeah, happens from time to time, have to turn off/on WiFi afterwards, kind of annoying yes.

Yeah sometimes it does that. As mentioned above, have to turn off/on WiFi.
why not just turn off data? i guess that would be quicker than having to turn off/on wifi
there's a widget, toggle data

loooool! I dont think there is a set up as much mate. You set up ur wifi and ur mobile network settings. When ur by wifi like home it connect then when u leave and go out it connects to the mobile internet. Thats how mine works.
looks like an iphone but powered by android baby!!!!
just connect it mate, then automatically the phone will turn the 3g network off (when connected with wifi)

What it means?
Thanks to all for the answers, so I have to do nothing because I have configured my 3g and wifi, so my phone should change the connection depends of the situation.
Thanks!
Is there an app or a script I could run to tell my phone not to connect to wifi when 4G is available..? I run with wifi on all the time and have a handful of networks I connect to but would like the phone to automatically disconnect from wifi when 4G is available then reconnect if it is lost. This is useful for me at work because depending on where I am in the building I may have 4G/3G/no data but the wifi is everywhere but it is unsecured so I'd rather not use it if I don't have to.

just disconnect WiFi from notifications turn on data mobile from the same notification or add toggles widget.
save your internal space for something better.
After my tablet has been asleep for a while I'm having major problems with Wi-Fi. It appears that I am connected but no data is being transmitted.
Sometimes, if another wifi network is available I can switch to this new network and back to my preferred and then the Wi-Fi works OK again (for a while.)
Other times when there is no other network available or I am unable to connect to the other network I turn of Wi-Fi or switch to Airplane mode momentarily and then try to re-enable my Wi-Fi - then my Wi-Fi on/off button refuses to switch back to On and keeps switching itself back to Off.
The only solution at this point is to reboot the tablet.
I have tried "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep - Always" and "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep - Never"
I have tried "Disable powersave" in advance Wi-Fi options.
This is extremely frustrating as Archos upgraded me from a 101G9 because I had four devices each with different faults and now this!
Otherwise I'm happy with the tablet overall, it's far more responsive than the 101G9 and the coverboard is useful.
Does anyone have any idea why this could happen? Anyone else with similar problems? Anyone know a solution?
Try going into settings and selecting wifi never sleep. Worked on my 80g9.

Re: 101XS losing Wi-Fi after sleeping
Tried that Steve, make no difference unfortunately.

I fixed it by electing to turn Wi-Fi off when the tablet sleeps, which is annoying as I no longer get email alerts etc.
Hope for a fix in a later firmware...

I wonder if sychronizing (when ON) drain the battery when WiFi and Mobile Data is off? Actually all networks are off so it shouldn't work. I just want if I have to switch synchronizing to OFF too or turnig WiFi off deals with it?

if wifi and mobile data is off, synchronizing on/off doesn't matter..it wont drain battery..
if mobile data is on, it will use internet, so in turn it will use battery...
