VipeRUU not fixing my glitches and screen partially unresponsive - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I bought a glitchy phone rooted with sense 4+ that was really glitchy. It was like a ghost in the machine. The top 2mm of the screen is almost always non responsive, just under the HTC logo. I ported a mean bean Rom and the glitching lightened up but the top of the screen was still non responsive most of the time. Then I ported a sense 5 Rom, same issues. Finally took the leap with VipeRUU. It restored my phone to the 4.1 sense 4+ Rom I bought it with, just as glitchy as when I bought it. Shouldnt VipeRUU return the phone to before the glitchy Rom was installed, to ICS 4.0 and sense 4? What am I doing wrong?

Not if it's a hardware issue. Sounds like the issue my wife had with the touch screen.
But, that's just my two cents.

Selective Screen unresponsiveness usually isn't a Rom issue (never is as far as I know but I'll say usually because I'm no tech). Sounds to me like you bought a broken phone. The glitchiness could be tied into the screen problem.

If the digitizer is bad or flaking out then my phone is more than I want to repair. I hope it is a software issue since new RIMs seem to make it better. I am hoping to find a ROM that would somehow repair the glitches if they are software based.

If you're having an issue with your screen and the issue persists across numerous ROM's and even a RUU, then your issue is hardware-related. Sounds like your digitizer has issues and needs to be replaced. This issue has been mentioned before on here and the digitizer almost always seems to be the culprit.

The thing about the glitches is that they involve a lot more than an unresponsive screen. It constantly starts playing the HTC link video. The haptic feedback buzzes randomly during a glitch. If I'm on a web page, links get pressed sometimes and it zooms in and out without me doing anything. It got better, not perfect, but less glitchy when I flashed a new Rom.

Still sounds like an issue with your screen to me, anyhow.

Multitouch huge issue - second touch interferes with first

If I swipe then, in mid-swipe, I create a touch elsewhere on the screen, the first swipe becomes interrupted. This happens every time, all of the time.
See (not me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rz3uWFuDkI
I downloaded "Multitouch Visualizer 2" from the market and it confirmed the issue visually/quickly/easily/unambiguously.
I would really appreciate knowing if there is a fix.
It makes multitouch apps (especially games) impossible. I think it may contribute to the gingerbread keyboard not being as accurate as it was on my Evo while typing really fast (maybe).
Running rooted stock.2.08.651.2
In case it matters: HW revision 002. Panel Type = Panel_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT
(You can check which panel you have by going into terminal emulator and typing in "dmesg". The scroll up 40 lines or so and find "panel type.")
It is subtle enough in most UIs that I thought it was just me adjusting to the new screen, so don't feel silly if you haven't noticed it--I sure didn't!
I searched several times and I did not find this posted yet.
This is the closest I could find in search, but it is NOT my issue, mine does just fine on the "fast swipe test." As long as there is only one touch going on, it appears to work 100%! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140997
Thanks!
Try this, and read the instructions when you run the apk.

Just tested with dotty, and I had that issue too.
Tested again a few minutes later and the issue was gone.
Weird.
Type *#*#3424#*#* in phone, then run a line drawing test. See if it happens there.

It went away for a few hours then came back. I have absolutely no idea why. I had restarted it, but that is all.
When it worked, it really worked well. All 4 points tracked beautifully.
It is now having the issue again.
-The diag line test is single touch, not multi touch, so it does not help at all.
-I have no idea what that recalibrate program did, but it did not have any impact on the issue. Thanks though!
Any other ideas as to what this even could be? Anyone else having the problem?
I seem to have this issue too :/ think replacing the touchscreen will fix it?

Restart, and it goes away (for a while, at least). That tells me that it is more likely to be a software glitch, not a hardware issue. To me, it appears as if some multi- touch reference is not being replaced properly.
Because we only multitouch occasionally, I would bet that this could happen for a lot of users a lot of the time and it would go undetected.
NICE! The Evo only had two points. looks like Evo 3D has four points you can touch it at! hellz yeah! but it is really hard to test more than 4 points on a screen. not like I have 30 fingers .lol

It happens to me all day every day. It is the same on sense and CM and the other AOSP roms. It makes using the keyboard a chore because I usually type really fast.
Quite frustrating. But, I have confidence that if it is a software issue (hopefully), the wonderful devs here will fix it. All in due time.
I posted a YouTube video of this problem twice in this forum, and how to re-create it. I had it replaced because of the issue and the replacement had the same exact issue. I am pretty sure its a stock kernel problem, not hardware. With some of the cooked kernels, my E3d didn't have the multitouch problem.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rz3uWFuDkI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
It looks like this problem is more widespread than I originally thought.
thanks for the video. I have the hardware version 2 of the evo3d. don't have this issue as far as I can tell. the white one. love this thing. NEVER BUY THE FIRST VERSION EVER!
Hi all. Im going to buy this phone and noticed this thread. I am really warried about this issue because i had some touch issues with my HD2.
It looked like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTsvyRh3fqE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I simply couldnt write fast on the keyboard because some taps was jumping over the keyboard:/
Is the same issue on evo 3d??? How we can recognize version??
tested on GSM Leedroid with stock kernel...no problems here.

I have the EXACT same issues as OP. Multitouch is crazy and so is typing using the GB keyboard. No fixes so far. HW 0002.
OP ??? How to check hw version??
Thanks for all the feedback, y'all.
Hardware revision is unlikely to be the culprit. On 002 here. Check it in settings-about phone-hardware info.
Mine seems to be fine 90% of the time now. Just when I think it mysteriously fixed itself, I check and it is back (this is based on checking at random times during the day.)
I really have no idea what could cause this. Movement appears to be unrelated, as is load, time used, battery charge, or specific activity. All I know is that restarting makes it better...sometimes for a minute, sometimes for hours.
Consider making a shortcut to a multitouch tester and generating some more anecdotal data. I was pleasantly surprised that it was so infrequent.
I have the same issue, across several roms. Progressively got worse over the course of a week, to the point of getting phantom taps whenever I touched a section of the phone towards the top. Recently took it to Sprint to replace the screen, restoring it completely to stock before, even turned S-ON. They replaced it and the problem went away for a few days. Now it is doing this again. Something is definitely going on.
Why dosent anyone believe me when I say its the kernel? Flash a cooked one and it will stop.
not everyone in here has time to flash every "kernel" ever to be created by some weird guy or 12 year old. lol some of us work 80 hours a week. :-D My tummy hurts. which one of your gf's or ex's or wives wanta kiss my tummy. I'm pretty darn happy with the stock kernel. I value simplicity and stability above everything else. This phone is plenty fast for how I use it.
Could you let us know what kernel has had modifications that are relevant to multitouch? My ideal kernal is stock (August update) with just this modification.
Also, keep in mind that it might take a while to evaluate whether it works. Mine was fine all yesterday but now is having the skittish multitouch issue.

Bugs with Gingerbread

I was wondering if anyone else experience bugs after updating besides the known bugs that Verizon and HTC acknowledged. My unlock screen has been unresponsive and so has the bottoms on the bottom. Sometimes when i'm using the phone and just decides to go crazy, I have a screen protector so can the unresponsiveness be due to that? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I got the GB issues so the only thing I could think of was to Root and flash with a ROM that ran GB. I don't know how much more we can do until they release something stable and not full of bugs
The screen protector can affect the on screen buttons my wife had to remove hers due to this, but having your phone act crazy could be something else.

Not sure if this is a known bug yet but after gingerbread update the clock app doesn't show up in app list.only way to launch is is by the widget

I'm on the GB update and haven't noticed any responsiveness issues. I'm also running a naked TB w/o a screen protector. It's hard to say if that's it -- I'd hate for you to rip it off for it to make no difference. Do you have any other apps running that might affect it?
I have to say the GB update seems really stable for me, aside from the known logging bug that is...

[Q] Touch Screen issues

Hey All!
My amaze is awesome except that I can't play games well on it! When trying to play games like Gta 3 or Minecraft that have virtual buttons my touch screen does funky stuff. When holding down a button to move forward my character will start to move and then stop like the touch screen has stopped registering my finger that is still holding down the button.
My question to you all is do you have issues where your screen is flakey or do I maybe just have a bad unit? I have even noticed in web browsing that the page stutters sometimes even when I'm scrolling slowly on a fully loaded page.
Same here on gta and other games... You got a screen protector?
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda premium
Nope, I don't. I'm thinking its the pin in the back like a couple other people have said. I might just take it back and get a new one though. Lol. Its bad though... I can't even play any games on it that have virtual buttons! That and it won't detect more than 3 fingers on the multitouch test app I got.
Is this actually a problem on the Amaze or just a faulty device of op?
I believe it's a faulty device. Mine works with 4 touch points without a problem. Including other 2 device from my family member
Which Rom are you on? If its Fourth Sense then that ROM has a touch problems. Happened to me , I changed the Rom back again and that did the job for me.

I don't believe its a faulty device, it might be the actual rom, or some apps...when I restart my phone I run the mutitouch app and all 4 points register perfectly...after about a minute or so, the 4th point starts messing up...
sometimes, I can only get 1 touchpoint at a time to register properly....I'm on stock rooted rom.
I'm going to nandroid my phone and put stock nonrooted and stock rooted on my phone, to find out if it fixes the problem and if the roms make a difference. If not, then I would blame some of the apps. I've heard some roms such as beast rom work very well with touchpoints, so i'm guessing it has something to do with the stock rom itself.
right now I'm on stock kernel, but I was on faux, I'm going to also try to see if kernels make a difference:
This won't be over night, I will need time to do all this, I don't have time to mess with my phone when i need it.
update:
other people with roms and problems: it seems to be the rooted stock does not work well with touchpoints,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430210&highlight=gta
so far beastmod and android revolution hd are roms that have been reporting to work well with touchpoints if you want root.
Or.... Buy a phone for gaming....lol
Wasnt the main selling point of this phone the camera?
There is no doubt my old g2x blows away the amaze for games and video....
But I knew that buying this phone.
Even the best game eVAHr , atomic bomber, doesn't respond well on this phone. I mention this because AB is a pretty basic game.

qhd screen ghosting?

just curious if anyone has noticed this with the amaze? ive noticed that with some apps, particularly with fonts while scrolling, i get screen ghosting. it usually doesnt happen when im watching a video or playing a game, but when im scrolling thru my homescreens (using golauncher) my widgets will ghost a bit. pure news widget does it pretty bad while im scrolling up and down and mclock will do it as im scrolling between homescreens. havent noticed it too much with sense widgets/apps, but admittedly i dont use the sense launcher. thoughts?
Yep, I have this too. It's the thing where the moving parts seem to blur when in motion right?
I have it too ANNOYS the hell out of me. Then I got used. But when I do pay attention to it its hard not to notice until I put it in my pocket for a while again.

Yup, that's it. Its weird because it doesn't happen with every app. I usually notice it the most with text on screen. The letters become a deeper shade of whatever color they are. Its like it blurs, then as soon as I stop scrolling, they look normal again.
It buggs me too. I sincerely hope that issue is fixed in a future update

from what i know of ghosting, it has to do with the screens refresh rate, so im not sure (correct me if im wrong) that a software update will fix it. the fact that i never heard of this while doing my research prior to getting this phone, leads me to believe a few things; nobody notices it, not that many people have the issue, or nobody cares. either way, htc wouldnt recognize it as an issue, thus no fix.
I thought this was normal lol. I hope this is fixable.

stock rom does the same thing. if youve just gotten your phone, chances are you havent used it enough with a bunch of different apps to notice.
ive been doing a bit more research and have seen others notice the blur on different phones as well, some more noticeable than others. seems like there could be a few things that may cause this:
1. app is not optimized for qhd screen
2. anti-aliasing
3. bad screen
since in my experience i havent noticed it with every app (or maybe its less noticeable but still present), im leaning more towards number one. hopefully more people can chime in with their experience
I can't seem to replicate it and I use go launcher quite a bit. Maybe its just because I don't realize it?

[Q] Laggy, choppy scrolling

Have a stock DNA and I've noticed laggy or choppy scrolling in apps such as Facebook, Instagram, even browsing the web. Is this related to Sense or a setting in the DNA?
I came from a Google Galaxy Nexus previously and didn't have this bug...the scrolling on that phone was very smooth and continuous.
have you installed anything that could be slowing it down, My DNA is far smoother than any phone ive used before, including a galaxy nexus.
You could try checking the gpu rendering option in the developer options and see if that helps
The phone will get laggy if it overheats. Is the phone hot?
Sense?

Hmm...I don't have anything abnormal installed and I'm fully stock. Also, the device never gets hot (even when my GNex did.)
I suppose I could do a factory reset and try installing apps one at a time to find out if anything is slowing it down but that seems like such a PITA considering this is a quad-core phone w/ 2GB ram.
I was hoping someone else could confirm that their DNA was doing the same thing. =/

I've been having choppy scrolling in settings, trying to find what can be adjusted to make it stop showing black spots when scolling fast. But not having any lag per se.
I too have somewhat choppy scrolling in a few apps (news apps in particular). Stock also and nothing in settings or apps I have seems to affect it, nor does the heat of the device. Got a replacement phone after 3 weeks for a different problem and reinstalled everything slowly, checking to see if anything affected this issue. Nothing did. Cannot read articles as fast as on prior phones because of this, but have just adjusted my scrolling/reading habits.
Yeah it seems to be a problem sadly. In terms of loading speed and such the phone fairs fine, its just choppy as hell, I don't get it. Htc really dropped the ball on this one, with an s4 pro there's no excuse for this kind of performance. As far as I can tell its a mix of poor engineering and sense. You could probably fix the home screen choppiness with another launcher, as far as apps go....I have no clue :/

I second this. Even with the occassionally choppy scrolling in some apps (only a few on my phone, mind you), I still love how fast and smooth the DNA performs generally speaking and would not trade it for a other device currently on market. I think some of this will get better as apps are updated for our device.

I love how everyone blames every little problem on the chance its a defective device. For the love of Christ we're talking about scrolling here, its a software issue, its not POSSIBLE for that to change on its own. Seriously, its not defective. My device lags on stock launcher with NOTHING installed. It just takes the right widget and app placement on the home screen. I'll gladly take a video of the phone lagging on scrolling after a FULL wipe if you really want me to. But frankly I don't need to because it's a well discussed issue and I don't need to take my time proving a problem that's already been brought up so many times. Seriously, go on Google and type in 'htc dna choppiness'. Accept the fact the HTC made a mistake (and everyone does, just in different ways) and move on.
