[Q] Stuck after un-root - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
This may be a daft question or may have been covered in here already.
Technically challenged phone operators question...
I rooted my S3 last year... then un-rooted after a period of time.
I noticed that i was not getting any android updates, thought to check to see what my counter was at and was surprised to see it was at 1.
My phone status via device is modified.
I had a look to see what others recommended, so played with the triangle, but need to re-root to use.
At present i am on:
AP:I9300XXEMC2
CP:I9300XXEMC2
CSC:I9300XXEMC1
Version of Andriod is still 4.1.2
Build:JZO54K.I9300XXEMC2
Kernel Version:
3.0.31-1042335
[email protected]#1
SMP PREEMPT mon mar11 17:32:43 KST
2013
Is there an easy way to get the counter back to 0?
Will i have to re-root and go back through the process again to get back to 0?
Thanks in advance.

Questions go in the q&a forum, report your own post and ask a moderator to move it.
Follow the guide to return to full stock status, which includes resetting the counter.

[Q] a question for someone with more knowledge than me

Hello everyone, first time poster but very long time reader of these threads, i've been trying to get as much info as possible on this topic in the hope of reducing the noob-ness of my questions.
First off my phone specs are..
SGS2 on the 3/Vodafone network Australia
P-Code is GT-I9100LKJHUT
Model number GT-I9100T
Android Version 2.3.5
Baseband Version I9100TDUKJ1
Kernal Version 2.6.35.7-I9100TDUKJ1-CL687461
[email protected] #2
Build Number Gingerbread.DUKJ1

PDA: I9100TDUKJ1
Phone: I9100TDUKJ1
CSC: I9100THUTKJ1
Build Info: Wed Oct 26 13:30:25 KST 2011
What i'd like to confirm is...
I have CF-Root-SGS2_XW_LUX_KJ1-v4.4-CWM4.tar
and CF-Root-SGS2_XW_LUX_KJ1-v5.0-CWM5.tar
are either of these two suitable to root my phone, and if so which would be better? or do i need to track down a kernel that more closely matches my stock one? I'm not too bothered about the yellow triangle or the counter increase as yet because i just want to get the root process right first, so can i safely continue using the new firmware/kernel instead of going back to stock just to remove the triangle.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks in advance for any help.
You can use either, but use the 2nd one - later version of CWM. Apart from that, no difference.
So far as getting rid of the triangle/resetting the counter, get a jig & kill two birds with one stone. You can remove the triangle by another method, but it's fiddly and a jig is a must in any event.

Two points on above that OP should be aware of .
one ICS is not yet released beta rom only
two Triangle Away states
THIS IS A DANGEROUS OPERATION AND COULD POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. A USB JIG IS PREFERRED IF YOU HAVE ONE.
( and by brick I mean brick - only a board replacement or a JTAG unit will be able to save you, don't mess with boot(loader) stuff unless you really mean it! )

I would go with the 2nd as it has a later version of CWM - the important part of the kernal is the last three digits yours and the kernels you have picked out match.
Thanks all for your replies, I must say what a relief it is to come to a forum where noob questions aren't met with derision and ridicule, I'm doubly glad because there's many more questions to come, thanks again.
P.s. where is the thanks button so I can give house all a big thumbs up?
Edit: there it is, I can't see for looking

[Q] Brand new S2. After flash: errors...

I already posted in the wrong place one... I hope this is the right place.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I have a problem with my S2 after flashing to new firmware. This is the story:
- I purchased a S2. Everything worked fine. This was the data before I did something I shouldn’t have done:
PDA: I9100XWLQ2
PHONE: I9100XXLQ6
CSC: I9100DBTLPO
Sales code: DBT (only)
Android 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version
3.0.15-1157945
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 26 16:17:36 KST
2012
Build number: IMM76D.XWLQ2
Kies worked fine (updated to the above).
- The only problem is that the firmware was DBT (German). The UI was in English but some applications were German. Nothing against Germany but I’m UK based.
- I decided to update to a new version using Odin, so I flashed:
I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA
This is where all the problems started:
Every time I boot I got a message saying the process android.(...).acore stopped
Clearing contacts cache/data did not address the problem
I read in this thread that this was due to instability of LP9 and it was advisable to use LP8.
- Flashed using Odin
Kernel_I9100XWLP8.tar.md5
I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA
- Now I have UK applications (which is good) but:
a) Every time I boot I get the message "Unfortunately, LogsProvider has stopped"
Clearing contacts cache/data doesn’t help.
b) When I try to use the phone (e.g. dial a number) I got a black screen for a minute or so and then the LogsProvider message. After that the phone application closes.
c) Kies stopped working with the message:
Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies
Current firmware version: PDA:LPT / PHONE:LQ6 / CSC:LPA (DBT)
- Flashed I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA_HOME
Same problems
Now internal data is:
Android 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version
3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 27 18:08:15 KST
2012
Build number: IMM76D.XWLPT
In ideal world I would like to have an UK, unbranded, S2 and use Kies for future updates. Having said that, considering that the phone is almost dead any suggestion to bring the S2 back to life would be great.
I’m a little bit desperate... help... please
Thanks
~sf
P.S. I did search and read post, guides, notes, comments and info. I am not sure I understood all of it but I did try - I promise.
Well....why don't you just flash an unbranded stock ROM then? You could always update it via kies or OTA.
Should get 4.0.3 tho, dancing with 4.0.4's kernel might brick your device.
what you mean by "bring back to life", It is still working right?

This was the plan:
- Install an unbranded version
- Update via Kies
I didn't work
Do you have any suggestion for a UK-unbranded fimware version (4.0.3) that should work. My understanding is that it should be
a) for GT-I9100 (obviously)
b) XEU version (aka UK)
c) Android 4.0.3
Apart from that, is there any other important requirement?
Would this be ok: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604254

Well, not exacly. I can't make calls...
Don't worry about either your country or your calls. Search for an unbranded samsung official stock 4.0.3 ROM, flash it, check it out (smoothness and all) and then try to make a call. If it doesn't fly, just flash another modem

I9100XWLP7_I9100XEULP5_I9100XXLPS\I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XEULP5_HOME.tar.md5
I got the following messages:
"Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped working"
"Unfortunately, the process androind.process.acore has stopped"
"Unfortunately, LogsProvider has stopped"
I still can't make calls (black screen + above messages)
:crying:

Good news. It looks like the situation has improved after the factory reset.
I'll go to sleep now (it's 2:50am here in London/UK). Tomorrow I'll check all the functions and but it looks like I'm going are in the right direction.
I'll post tomorrow about the results.
Thanks for your help gastonw - it is really appreciated. :good:
np, go get some rest now.
[Q] Brand new S2. After flash: errors, slow... (more questions)
Bingo! The factory reset worked. Everything back to normal. I have my UK application and Kies update to:
Android version: 4.0.4
Base version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023

The only odd thing that the "About phone screen/Status" shows serial number 0000000000*. Not the end of the world.
Just a few additional questions
Now, before I make the same mistake again (do something I shouldn't, panic and ask for help)... If I want to root:
a) Can I do it without risking to brick?
b) Can I still use Kies after rooting?
c) Is there a recommended procedure that I should follow?
*update about it the next post.
Quick update about serial number 0000000000. Apparently, it is a 4.0.4 bug. The serial number is stored correctly internally but Android UI shows 0000000000.
The majority of people here probably already know that but just in case...

I manage to find the answers to my own questions :silly:
a/c) I followed the procedure described here. It worked great.
b) Yes. Kies doesn’t seem to care that the S2 is rooted
Result:
- 4.0.4 generic/unbranded/XEU firmware
- Updated and recognised by Kies.
- Rooted successfully.
- So far everything works smoothly and fast
Lesson learned:
- Factory reset after firmware flash resolved the problem.
I couldn’t be happier :good:

Happy to hear that, It's good to find answers just by reading a couple of post or googling around.
Now, I'd like you to read a little more about the brick bug and 4.0.4 ICS.
In the meanwhile, enjoy your device.

I heard of it - although I don't know the details. The 4.0.4 Brick Bug is the reason why I flashed to 4.0.3 instead of 4.0.4.
The Samsung Update application updated to 4.0.4. It wasn't, strictly speaking, my direct choice. I could have ignored the suggestion of updating but I though that, since the update was coming from Samsung and it was applied to stock firmware, it was a safe choice.

This sounds a little bit scary Should I be worried about something?
Lol, I remember you were on 4.0.4, told you It would be wise to go 4.0.3 and kies threw you back at 4.0.4.
Download gotbrickbug app from the store and check your chip (just for kicks). If it's insane, well...you can always go back to 4.0.3 and wait for the Jelly Bean update thru both Kies & OTA (Over The Air).
The thing is, you're completly safe whereas you don't flash any ROM or custom ROM, and perform things like wipes thru recovery and what not.
If you want to go in a flashing frenzee, then you might flash a safe kernel (like Siyah), but I think it's not the case, you seem to love Kies updates
The important thing is that your device is running smoothly on ICS; so, enjoy.

Hi gastonw,
Thanks again for you useful comments.
I suspected your comments about 4.0.3 vs 4.0.4 were related to my previous attemps of flashing 4.0... and your advice of staying away from it.
I run gotbrickbug and I'm happy to say it reports "Brick Bug? NO. Sane chip" - which I guess is good news.

[Help]Trouble rooting my S2...

Ok so basically I have an Australian Vodafone S2...
Its a GT-I9100T
On fully STOCK 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100TDVLS3
Kernel version says:
3.0.32-889696
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Tue May 7 12:33:45
KST 2013
Build number:
JZO54K.I9100TDVLSM
now basically I've gone over threads, tried to learn how to root my device and get a custom recovery so i can install an MIUI rom but It seems that since the days of owning my first Optus S2 the whole process(s) have gotten much more difficult, confusing and complicated...
So I know its noob to ask but I don't care, can I get some help with rooting and gaining cwm recovery or something like that on my device so I can flash a custom rom please?

Which damn files do I actually need, because I can't figure it out -_-
If you still can't figure it out having read those two threads, leave your phone stock. They're self explanatory if you actually take the time to read them properly (as opposed to merely skimming them; taking shortcuts will probably lead to a busted phone).

Stratosphere 2 Help

Good evening ladies and gentlepeoples! I guess I'm the new kid in town and I'm in need of a little assistance.
As the title of my post states, I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere 2 (SCH-I415) which has been rooted and I think my Kernel is a skootch outdated & I'm not sure how to update without messing anything up.
Just to make things easier, here is my setup:

the kernel is part of the system(firmware), if you update the firmware, the kernel will be update too
but, if there's a custom kernel for your device, you can change it, but you have to rooted your phone first
Well, my phone is already rooted. I just want to update my custom kernel without accidentally bricking my phone. OTA updates no longer work. I try and I get "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped".
Bump/Update
Now sometimes my phone will randomly shut itself off when I'm in the middle of doing something like web browsing or listening to music.
Bump
I know this is an old post but I am in need of a stock ROM or a flashable custom ROM for this phone. I am on MA2 or MJ2. I will have to look at the phone again but I know it's 2 for sure. Is there anyway you could upload a copy of 3 for me and other users? Thank you

[Q] Need to exchange my phone

Ive been having issues with my galaxy s4 for a while. Verizon said I could exchange it a while back cuz I still have my warranty.
Then I did the recent update and its 100x worse than it was before. Restarts every 3 minutes basically. So annoying. It used to be rooted. Dont think it is anymore.
I decided that now would be a good time for me to finally exchange my phone.
What do I need to do so that they dont know about it ever being rooted or whatever? I know doing stuff like that voids the warranty, but isnt there a way to make it so that they dont know anything was done to the phone?

If you took the NG6 update and did not root it afterwards, you no longer have root so you don't need to worry about it. Device status should read "Official" and there should be no "custom" when you boot the phone and you are golden. Kind of lucky for some that they released an update for the S4. If anyone ever wants to get their device back to official, all they gotta do is take the update. For once, thank you Verizon.

When my phone turns on, it does say Custom on it & it has a padlock picture above the word Custom....
Since the ng6 update is official, search for ng6 full wipe tar file and flash it through Odin. It will be clear of everything. It's my go to when I screw up flashing a rom
reply
So if i do a full wipe and whatever else you said to do...lol..
when i take it to the store, there is no way for them to find out that it was once rooted?? or that it was messed with in any way??
BTW, thank you so much for all your help...!!
That is correct. It'll be restored to factory conditions

If you can't locate it for ng6, I know they have one for nc5 in the developer section.
