Best Recovery - AT&T LG Optimus G

I normally use TWRP but I have tried 2 different versions (2.4.1.0 & 2.6.3.0) and both have failed occasionally with my stock/rooted ROM. CWM 6.0.3.8 seems to be fine but no touch and I'm not sure if there is a simple way to rename the backups for easy identification. Is there a better version of TWRP or CMR I should try? TIA

Does this recovery work well with the ROM's that are constantly being updated...because I see a lot of devs recommending twrp, which is what I use...

I strongly recommend CWM 6.0.4.6 (use FreeGee for easy install) as it works amazingly for me. Recognizes SD and no issues I've seen so far. I saw bugs with 6.0.4.7, but 6.0.4.6 is perfect. Backups (based on Nandroid) are great too (when switching ROMs I can make a backup and and restore just data from the backup after switching, so I don't have to be worried when I wipe the phone every time). I've never had an error with 6.0.4.6 unless there was a problem with the ROM itself.

I recently switched to the Philz Touch version of CWM. Very versatile with many settings and modifications available.

No. They are two completely different recoveries made by two different teams. Some people will say CWM is the best, some will say TWRP is the best. I have used both, TWRP on the 3d and CWM on the hero.

there is some cross compatibility depending on which version of each recovery.
i know both recoveries use the same/similar methods to backup the kernel, i.e. dump the whole kernel partition to an image file.
twrp calls this file: boot.win and cwm calls it boot.img. they are the same file and same file type even though the "extension" is different. the extension doesnt matter in linux, so the only difference is irrelevant regarding content type.
i know twrp still dumps the system and data partitions to an image. i know cwm used to dump them to an image but i think recently cwm switched to created .tar files for system and data partitions? not sure, would have to double check that.
hope that helps!
as the person said before, you can load certain things from some backups. but they are not fully reflashable in both recoveries. i tried TWR but i didnt like it as much as CWM. koush's recovery is very simply and straight forward. but its honestly all preference.
Cool. Figured I'd ask cuz I'm fresh over to the 3D from the EVO 4G and I know amon ra recovery was better than cwm

I had cwm, but switched twrp Recently. Cwm is a nice basic recovery. Twrp has some more advanced features. Personally, I've gotten pretty familiar with twrp and I prefer it over Cwm.
Specifically... I like the ability to flash Multiple zips in a row. I also like the ability to wipe straight from the flash zip menu. I also like that it is themeable. That's my 2c.

TWRP 2.4 is out

Hello fellow Touchpad enthusiasts,
I happened to see TWRP has a version 2.4 available to us - http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/tenderloin
I saw it posted in other device forums, but not ours so thought I'd share the news.
About all I can tell you is it installed without any major problems. Nothing else tested other than boot into it and reboot to CM 10. I just moved ver 2.3 and copy/renamed 2.4 into same directory. Only problem encountered was old ver permissions were messed up so had to mess around before I was able to move the old ver. That and I reset permission on new ver to match - forget what I modeled it after - the other recovery uImage since I have them both installed.
As always ymmv.

It would be easier for you to install from goo manager, just tap install openrecoveryscript and your done.

Good idea, thanks dawg
I read about incompatibility problems between TWRP 2.4.3.0 and TouchPad.
But does anybody know what about the new twrp-2.4.4.0-tenderloin?
Please fulfill:
TWRP v.________ and ROM ToolBox
CWM v._________ and GooManager
Edit:
Above is false. You should use ...
... TWRP with GooManager and ...
... CWM with ROM ToolBox!
I will stick with CWM. Seems stable enough, it works as it should, and I don't mind to scroll through using my volume rocker.

I updated to 2.4.4 but haven't tested yet, but lots of people were having issues on the Nexus 4 on 2.4.3.0 and after the update nobody has any problems. I know the touchpad is a different animal but i bet it works now. No way I'm ever going back to cwm. Twrp has the best setup & all the right features.
Everytime I tried to flash a zip for a bug fix (headphone detection glitch, etc) it would fail in TWRP. Every time. So I went back to CWM. Goomanager is completely unreliable in regards to finding rom updates, etc.

Are you using the latest version? Twrp is working perfectly for me.
Update:
I take my message back. I backed up, did a factory reset, restored my backup, & everything is there except it twrp didn't restore my app data nor my system settings data.
Update:
I just flashed shumash's new build with success. So flashing in twrp is now working fine for me. Going to have to investigate why my restore didn't fully work on my previous post.
Is anybody else using the latest Twrp?
New twrp 2.5 out. Haven't tested it out yet. But it looks like they fixed the restore issues.

Nice! Let us know how it goes for you. I had a few issues with 2.4.4 but my last couple backups and restores worked great. Thanks for letting us know!
And it don't work. Its worse. It restored 5 apps out off 250... It booted though. But i also had a cwm backup done right before so its all good.

Hm I was using TWRP but I ran into some trouble flashing some roms and then switched to Philz's Touch CWM, and its awesome. It also have OpenScript support, so I can flash using GooManager like with TWRP. So far its been great. Only features I miss from TWRP is the slide to confirm and the "lock" feature that they implemented the last update.

CWM/CWM touch is good for beginners Easy to install using ROM manager and does its job, however in a minute you will be probably looking more functionality and flash TWRP.
CWM.......simple, does what it says on the tin, can't see any need for many extra functions

I agree! CWM! Used the 4ext recovery for some while, but went back to CWM...
Any recovery but i would recommend CWM easy to use and plain. Don't use CWM touch iit has reported a load of problems when trying to restore backups (unable to restore /data) and you might have to start from scratch.

Rom Manager

Currently have TWR recovery I flashed using goomanager but have been hearing bad thing about it. Can I just download Rom Manager from the play store and use it to flash clockwork or do I need to us another way to flash it ? Thanks !
If TWRP works fine for you then who cares what other people say or think about. I only run TWRP and have no issues with it.
Don't just go by what other people say, check out some videos on YouTube of ClockworkMod and see if it's for you. Very recently, an official CWM build appears to have become available so if you want to use that, it should be as simple as downloading ROM Manager and doing recovery setup.
I havent used TWR to flash anything yet just used it to to a backup of my stock rooted rom. Thanks for the replys.

I've ran both on multiple devices and i also prefer twrp. It's laid out nicer. Being able to wipe cache and dalvik in one shot or at least in one menu screen is way more convenient than them being separate options on separate screens.

[Q] Issues with booting and /data corruption

I've had this 4-5 times now, with various ROMs, tried CM10.1, 10.2 most recently. Basically the phone randomly stops booting, I can get to the recovery fine, but booting to system gets stuck on the Galaxy S4 Logo screen. Tried dalvik / cache wipes, permission fix, nothing helps.
Firstly, unless I completely wipe data (full wipe including /data/media), I can't seem to be able to install a new ROM. If I dirty flash everything works fine, but if I do a factory reset, I will get stuck on the logo at boot. Then even after I have successfully installed a ROM, I will sometimes randomly get stuck on reboots, and nothing but another full wipe will fix this. Is this an issue with the TWRP recovery? or is my internal memory fudged and getting corrupt ?
edit: See my post here for details on what I've found so far, I may have fixed the problem but needs more testing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397438&page=2

I've been using TWRP too. I panicked last night when I couldn't boot at all. I couldn't even get to recovery. I then tried the no wipe odin without luck. I finally got the stock odin image to work but I've been having serious issues with booting on this phone since I got it this weekend and it could be TWRP I suppose. I was using it on my note 2 with no issues. Very strange. I'm back to stock and running fine now.

Still having odd issues with TWRP after updating to 2.6, getting stuck on boot as before, and sometimes flashing a ROM will just fail and the data partition becomes read only, and I can't push anything to it till I reformat /data.
Going to try CWM today, really hope this is just a recovery issue. Are there any tests to check the health of on board memory? I am really hoping I don't have bad hardware here.
Im having the same issue just made a thread fir it guess I will delete since I found this. Hope someone figures it out. What root/ recovery method did you all use. Was it the auto script?

Root / recovery methods will be the same for everyone, regardless of what guide / thread you followed, in the end you will have a loki-patched recovery and kernel, as thats the only way to run unsigned images on these phones. Whats relevant here is which recovery and kernel you are using, as these are the only 2 things that could effect errors in the boot logo state (aka freezes before the ROM boot animations kick in). Ive been looking through various ROM threads of people reporting this issue and its pretty widespread, and usually is linked to recoveries rather than ROMs. If you can post your recovery + ROM here that would be helpful. Here is what I've done so far:
I was initially on TWRP 2.5.0.2, which had possible bugs that could corrupt /data, leading to failed flashes, and being unable to read/write from /data entirely (including /sdcard). After switching to 2.6.0.0 I was still getting stuck on the boot animation. (All of this running the CM10.2 ROM with the stock kernel here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384470). Note I did not do a full wipe after switching to 2.6.0.0, so that recovery MAY still be ok if someone wants to test it out.
I am now running CWM (official installed off ROM Manager). After flashing this I did a full re-format (/system, /data (including /data/media), etc.). And so far I haven't had any problems, going to do some more fiddling / flashing tonight to try and see if its really fixed, but I know for sure that atleast the reboot bug is gone.
So my advice is to flash the official CWM recovery, do a full re-format using that recovery, and then re-install your ROM.
I had that same /data issue with TWRP. It worked perfect for a few months and then suddenly it happened. I enjoyed TWRP for the 10 minute backups and restores, but i'd rather put up with CWM's 30 minute backup and restores if that will mean it wont happen again. Currently running PhilZ Touch Recovery and its been perfect so far!

Have you tried any 4.3 ROMs with the PhilZ recovery? There seem to be some issues there. Still that recovery may be a good solution for those on 4.2 having this problem. I'm gonna try and loki patch the official CWM touch tonight if I don't run into this bug again, using the volume buttons is so bloody painful lol.

None of my ROMs are 4.3, but i know the one i'm using is soon to be updated, so i will know if it works or not when it gets updated to 4.3. But no issues on 4.2.2 ROMS as of yet with PhilZ.

Yes its a custom build of CWM maintained by an xda dev here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322675
Im still having the issue with philz. Everything was fine for the first 4-5 weeks. Now about every 3rd reboot or if battery dies I have to wipe data and nandroid. Im running stock with several tweaks. Going to try and odin restore to stock re root snd install cwm tonight and see if that helps will report back

Alright, I'm almost 99% sure this problem is gone after I switched to the official CWM. I've tried everything from restoring nandroids to flashing TWiz / AOSP 4.2 and 4.3 ROMs, everything boots and reboots and /data is no longer getting corrupt. I also loki patched the official CWM touch recovery (the one on their site is not patched), and flashed + used it successfully. Its pretty simple to do this, just follow the guide here: https://github.com/djrbliss/loki and use this recovery: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.2-jfltevzw.img
The only issue I've been having is that when I reboot to recovery, it sometimes gets stuck and I have to do a battery pull and go back into recovery.

I'm having the same issue on TWRP 2.6. Tried with multiple ROMs. Everytime I reboot I have to format /Data. So frustrating. I will try CWM now.
