Hi
I was given an IS1900 on which the Home button is not functioning.
I rooted it, used Odin to install CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100 which I suspect killed the old Gingerbread that was on it.
Now I can't get it to boot into recovery.
ADB recognizes the device, but it says it's Unauthorised so can't boot it through ADB.
Odin doesn't see it.
So I'm a bit stuck really and guess it's a throw away.
100% my fault because I should have downloaded CM11 onto the SD card at the start!
Any rate, any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you, Tim
Same as everyone else in this situation, fix the the home button. OK. You seem to be able to get into download mode, even if phone & PC can't recognise each other. Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General has all the info you need to get a successful stock flash.
And then get the home button fixed if you intend to actually use the phone, even more so if you intend to mod it in any way. Running a modded phone without a vital piece of hardware working (for no fuss recovery purposes) is a lunacy.
Edit to add - A question also arose whilst I was eating lunch; without a home button, how did you get into download mode to have Odin not work - a jig I presume ?
Further edit - And yet another question; do you have an I9100 (I.E a Galaxy S2) or an I9000 (I.E a Galaxy S) ? If it's the latter, you're in the wrong forum.

Thanks Mr B. I got into download mode by holding Power and Volume down. Mind you this was after a couple of hours of playing around with it and not exactly sure how it happened!
It is a Galaxy S II (I9100) - I thought how strange to have I and 1 together but I guess I is International.
OK - I'm off to Hopper8.
Regards
Tim
OK. Yep, Hopper's thread has all the info in one place, should get you back to scratch.

Thanks Mr B - Perfect solution.
I guess I got that first download mode by chance using the following from Hopper8 "Take out the phone battery, and re-insert it, but don’t turn the phone on. Now, plug in the charger while holding the volume down button. Keep holding volume down till you enter download mode."
Now got 4.1.2 running.
Now to get Kitkat going....
I was thinking while drying the dishes - There are 1000's of posts about the S 11 on XDA, but you pointed me to the exact one I needed.
Also one must approach this rooting business in a suitable frame of mind as described in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".
Thanks again.
Tim
No worries. Ahhhh, OK. Yep that little 'pull the battery out' method is very handy to know in cases like yours. Good thing you found it yourself sooner rather than later saving you hours of pulling your hair out (and reading goodness knows how many threads).
Hopper's thread is probably the best in any of the S2 forums, because it covers 'recovery' (as in you have no access to recovery mode & only have access to download mode) from pretty much every angle; if your phone is recoverable easily, you'll do it with the info in that thread.
Happy to have helped Tim. Your comment about the 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' gave me a good chuckle Enjoy the rest of your weekend with your now working phone
At last.......we got someone who's prepared to listen to good advice.....lol
Sent from my Infected KitKat bar.....
Thanks again.
I now have Kitkat 4.4 running on this phone and it's impressive.
The Home button issue, well I can put up with that - use the Button app, and the TWRP Manager app.
Compared to my trusty HTC Desire HD (over 3.5 years old) which is running 4.2, this S 2 is noticeably fast.
The photos are blurry caused by a badly scratched cover, so I got the cc out and bought one for $US1.60 which includes shipping from HK to NZ - don't know how that can be done!.
Regards
Tim

Hey folks, sorry to bother you all but all input would be greatly appreciated. I'm rather unfamiliar with android flashing and kernels, and have spent the last 8 hours trying to figure this out to no avail.
Following this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070) (section 5) guide on how to get back to stock gingerbread on my phone (after a few partially failed attempts flashing other roms), I was using Odin, had the .pit 2.2 as well as CI500_VZW_EH03_GB_CM.tar.md5 loaded into the program and left it running. About 20 mins in, the phone stopped progressing and I started to get concerned. After two hours, I powered down the phone and proceeded to reattempt the flash. This is when things got weird. My phone was unable to enter the Download Mode and instead showed Android system recovery when plugged in, or a black screen with a phone and a computer, with arrows between when not plugged in. The weirdest part is that the phone no longer recognized vol+ or the power button when in Android Recovery, and could only vol- to go down the menu, then was stuck at the bottom of the list.
I've searched everywhere on this site, and google to try and come up with a solution.
When pluggin into the computer, I hear a connection sound, but the device is not recognized by Odin. Pressing the running a blind vol+ and vol-, then a vol- to hope Odin recognizes the device, as pointed out in this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764022) thread, resulted in nothing. Holding vol- while pluggin in the usb cable, doesn't show the download mode. All of the steps in this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026746) thread proved futile, as most of them required download mode anyways.
I'm going to keep searching and keep you posted as things come. Your help as always will be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Things just got weirder... After a few more attempts at making this work, I'm now getting an "Unable to charge non-supported battery. See user manual." With this error, I'm not able to get into Android Recovery anymore. More searching...
Edit 2: AFAIK I'm gonna need a jig. Anyone confirm?
Edit 3: Got a jig, Download Mode working, all is well. Please remove this thread, or leave it for other noob flashers to see.
Hey Folks, its been a while since I last posted in this forum, but I ran into a pretty serious issue earlier this evening. I was attempting to flash CM9 to my T959D and was running into tonnes of trouble. Throughout my attempts I was restoring back to stock rom, kernel and bootloader. During one of these restores, Odin froze in Win 7. Since then I've been unable to detect any form of life from the phone. It simply sits in a black screen. Holding the vol down while booting, blind vol up and down cable inserting, using my Jig and inserting the cable/battery in various orders results in nothing. The most I hear is a device failure to connect sound in Windows with no sign of life in Odin.
What can I do?
Someone posted stating leaving the battery out for multiple days would reset something on the motherboard, allowing me to get into download mode. Though I was hoping to have this resolved tonight. I realize that there aren't many people left with these phones, but I hope someone has a solution to this.
I'm going to be installing ubuntu tonight on an older desktop in a effort to resolve this. Though my experience with it is very limited, and success is unknown.
NOT GOOD... You should wait and see if others have a better solution, but Unbrickable Mod may be your only option.

Thats not good to hear. Well, I was snooping around looking for someone who could solder this for me, to no avail. My soldering skills are non existent. The most I fixed was a door bell, and I did a terrible job. I won't be able to get my hands on a soldering iron until tomorrow, is it worth trying?
I have located someone who can do a jtag on this model but have a few questions in regards to this:
Since my bootloader was corrupted, would the jtag service put a new bootloader on?
Would it prevent the same thing from happening again?
Are jtags designed on a per-phone basis?
Since there is a telus fascinate T959D as well as a verizon fascinate, and both phones are completely different, would I need to make sure the jtag is meant for this phone?
Is there anything I need to be made aware of before doing this that I haven't mentioned?
I've haven't had any experience with JTAG, but I've heard Unbrickable Mod is preferable. If you're looking for someone who can solder, check out your local RC/hobby store. If that fails, check out an electronics store, though it may take some searching to find one.

Hey no offence but stop telling everyone on the street they need too soljeir there phone with unbrickable mod before they can fix I'm tired of having too calm the person down after you said they have too open up the phone its utter bull****. 1 out of 10 soft bricks you may need it I've been without download mode and fixed mine just fine.

An update:
Took my phone in to get the jtag service... He said some of my partitions were corrupted, one of which was the boot layer. He put a new bootloader on, and showed it could be placed back into recovery and download mode, but when I got home the device was even more dead than when I left; no device failed to connect sound in windows, just nothing. I'm taking it back to him in a week after exams to get this resolved. Maybe the battery has reached the end of its life...? I checked it with a volt meter, and it had 3v+ so I really don't know.

As bbrad pointed out, there may be other solutions, and my answer could be totally wrong, but if even your bootloader is cooked, Unbrickable Mod may be your only hope. Since UM affects startup code literally hardwired into the chip, it should work as long as the JTAG doesn't interfere.

Another update. So apparently I flashed a bootloader from another phone, which royally screwed up the partition, kernel and mounted drives. The technician managed to get the original bootloader, kernel and rom on the phone and everything is working from stock again.
Why on earth is the 959d Telus version such a pain in the ass to customize?
Is there anyone on here that uses a 959d that can direct me to a proper method to leaving stock? Before this entire situation I had vodoo kernel on, with cwm, but every time I flashed a kernel it would hang on reboot and either sit on a black or white screen. In a lot of cases I would flash in cwm, reboot, then I would be brought back to cwm as if there was no rom on the phone at all, no matter what I formatted and wiped.
When I'm not on my phone I can link all of the guides I've tried that leave me back where I started. So I re flash back to stock using Odin.
At the end of the day, I have to ask, is it really worth it in the end? I've rooted and flashed many roms on other phones but have never run into as many problems as with this fascinate t959d

Hello!
Long time lurker, first time poster and new registrant TO post. Howdy!
Before we even get there.....yes, I searched first. I have been looking via searches here and via google for almost two hours, and have had exactly zero luck. Thus, I register and ask. Here's the specs.
First, I have a Galaxy S2 (model SCH-I500). It belongs to my old boss, and I need to give it back to him. I'll share the cliffs notes version of the background.
He rooted it about 1.5 years ago. And it was a pain in the ....posterior...from the day I got it. Last fall, I got tired of its issues and came here. I spent about 4 hours reading the forums, then downloaded Odin 3 c 1.8 and some ROMS.
I spent most of one slow workday futzing with it, and eventually got it re-ROM'd back to the factory image. Then, I cleaned up and uninstalled the crap I didn't want, and have been using it happily ever since. Stock ROM, only deleted stuff I ddin't want. I don't do much with the damn thing, its a work phone. I take calls, check email, and really that's about it besides texting.
So, I got a new job, and I need to return this to my old boss. I copied the whole thing to my PC to get all the pics and saved ringtones and such off it via USB. Then I powered it off and popped out my 2GB SD card.
My intention was, at this point, to re-flash it to stock and give it back to him that way, with none of my data on it.
SINCE that time, the phone will NOT boot.
It will ONLY go into 'android system recoovery <3e>', and only the home button does anything, and what it does is hide the text and leave you looking at the background image of the green robot guy and the exclamation mark. Not one single other button works to to ANYthing. Including the power button. Even holding it down at this point does nothing. You have to pull the battery to turn it off here.
But wait, it gets better!
Even after putting the SD card back in, this does not change. I cannot get into download mode to reflash it. I cannot boot the phone 'normally'...it simply goes to the same recovery screen and hangs. But I haven't actually DONE anything yet that should cause a boot loop or hang. I'd understand if I had applied a ROM or a patch or somesuch to it, but I haven't yet. Granted, I was ABOUT to, but I didn't do so yet.
I'm stumped. Regardless of the SD card being in, regardless of what buttons I push, hold, or don't touch, it only boots to the blue texted 'system recovery' menu and no buttons work at all... a complete hang. I can't boot into download mode, I can't just boot the thing, and I haven't yet applied any ROMs to it to fail or change anything.
At this point I'd settle for just booting it into the OS it has, and deleting my info...he'll probably either nuke it himself when I give it back to him anyhow, like he had it before. But I can't even do that!
Apparently, my google-fu is weak, and I cannot find an answer that isn't "Well, boot into download mode...". Because I currently cannot do this. Yes, I know, you're already going "Well, you must be using the other volume key". I am not. In the last 90 seconds, while typing this, I tried BOTH vol keys again to be certain....no matter what keys I hold down, it only boots to recovery and hangs.
...
I'm stumped and hella frustrated, so I'm gonna go drown in Sam Adams and come back in the morning with fresh eyes. Any indeas?
Thanks gang, I appreciate your reading this far for the n00b
Are you able to do anything in the recovery? Like wipe cache / factory reset?
Odoslané z GT-I9100 cez Tapatalk 2
Nope. From the recovery screen, all buttons are non-responsive except home, which hides the colored text. The volume, power, other face buttons, do exactly nothing. I have the blue recovery menu and a bunch of "CANNOT READ E;\" text, and that does not change regardless of the mem card status.
SCH-I500 is NOT a Galaxy S2. It's the Samsung Fascinate, a Verizon phone, and part of the Galaxy S line. NOT S2.
This post is currently in the forum for the I9100 variant of the Galaxy S2, a GSM phone that doesn't even work on Verizon.

Sorry mate. It says S II on the back cover, so I made the leap to assume that meant S2.
If some kind mod would go ahead and move this to the right place, that'd be swell.

I reported this thread to mods to be moved.
BTW, no need to apologize... I was just informing you of the model difference for your benefit, before you tried to flash an i9100 firmware. That would have ended badly for you.
Moved to Fascinate Q&A
Have you read over Droidstyle's Guide yet? It's the noob bible for for Fascinate users. He'll describe how to get into download mode with the battery out. If that fails, you could try a jig.
From there, just follow the guide until you're where you want to be.
So, I decided to stick with stock and what do I get? A phone that randomly stops working like I flashed a custom rom on it :X
All jokes and the sad situation aside, when plugged in i can get the Download Mode to stay open (else it closes after 3sec when not plugged in), figured I would try and flash the Stock Kernel to try and recover some of my app data but can only get to download mode so cant use recovery!
Can someone throw together an Odin flash-able Stock 4.1.2 Galaxy Note i717 Kernel together for me? Id like to try that before I outright flash over the entire rom through Odin!
Thanks!

ok, I read that you have seemingly more than ample experience here o XDA, so I want to give you the respect that is due, however you post is a wee bit confusing. maybe that's due to a lack of some other information.
let me ask a few questions.
is this phone new to you?
can you get to about phone info? what does it say?
I don't understand you download mode information..........
if you were trying t flash stock kernel, then your not on stock?
if you are on stock, then you HAVE stock kernel?
what recovery are you supposed to have?
no offense meant, but you HAVE pressed VOL UP & DOWN and POWER until vibe and logo then releasing POWER for download mode right?
again no offense, but sometimes the simplest things right.......

None taken been around the block a few times...
As for the phone, its basically in need of replacement by my thoughts, but I wanted to try and salvage some of my app data files:
WITHOUT the power plugged in, the unit does nothing but vibrate when I press the VOL Down, and any other key combos do not make the unit respond either.
When I remove the battery, then hold the VOL Down button... down... then put the battery back in, the unit will start in "Download mode" but even if I leave it on the screen or hit the up arrow to continue, after a few seconds it just shuts off and wont stay on.
However when I remove the battery, then hold the VOL Down, then plug in the adapter, it boots into download mode and doesnt shut off after a few moment's (however it wont start normally when I plug it in, just eternally vibrate).
The unit is an AT&T Variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note, specifically just the SGH-i717
The unit was/is running STOCK ROM+Kernel
I was making the request for the Stock Kernel for an Odin flash because when I had the Stock 4.0.4 I had a very identical situation occur (the difference being back then I could get and stay in download mode without using the power adapter) and used the Stock Odin Kernel from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
To get back into the unit and continue on without issue.
So the core of my post remains the same I need an Odin flash-able Stock AT&T 4.1.2 i717 kernel
*Your right, been here a while, I have tried again and again to grasp doing my own builds and all that other stuff when it comes to development and "do it yourself" and while I can fix a computer, build one, troubleshoot one, when it comes to Code... I am SO lost without a cause its not funny, so making the kernel file for myself is like asking me to walk on water when I am perfectly able to swim laps around someone who is ...
Sounds like you more than likely have a bad battery or a stuck power button. Mine had stuck on two separate occasions and just sits there vibrating and can't get it to boot or anything. Since I'm pretty sure you are out of warranty you can take a small screw driver and guitar pick to take it apart and use a little rubbing alcohol to clean the button.

kind of with RQUIETT............
after reading more detailed post, the first thing that came to my head was the stuck power button issue which has plagued many.
the battery, I have seen many have that too.
I am definitely not he brainpan to just whip up a kernel like it were a batch of cookies or something, I am still just curious as to why you keep going on about just the kernel, but to each there own.
good luck and keep us posted

if you are still curious then you failed to read my last post... reading not required I guess
Ill check the power button, but it definitely doesn't feel stuck, gives the wonderfully audible click still (been in an otterbox the whole time), I also had the local AT&T store order me a replacement battery, if not Insurance claim it will be.
Random thought, the thing that doesnt add up is that if its a stuck power button, then it would STILL turn off when plugged in to the AC/PC, which it doesnt... but Im willing to give it a try because If fear they will try and replace my wonderful 16:10 screen with a ****ty 16:9 one... (sorry, for all the wow of the GN2, its to NARROW for my use)

if anyone reads around here it is me, and I think its ok for me not to understand what needing a kernel alone is going to do for you. you came cross to me as a little harsh at someone who is trying to help and little demanding to expect someone to drop what they are doing just whip up a file for you flash in Odin.

My power button never felt stuck when it was. It did a lot of what you described when it did. Sometimes you can take it out of the case and tap on the back and it will free it up

Hi there,
I'm a new member here but I've enjoyed the site for quite a while and have had a rooted SGS2 for about 18 months, I love the phone and see no reason to move onto anything else, but I've now killed it by trying to be too clever.
I upgraded to Neatrom Lite v4.8 a couple of months ago, and in an attempt to get a bit more out of the battery I deleted Touchwiz, not realising that the phone couldn't operate without it!
I went into CWM recovery and attempted to reload Neatrom, then attempted to reload the stock browser all of which were on my SD card, but I kept getting an error message stating that a file wasn't recognised, then I got an option to overwrite or rewrite the file, which I did, and now my phone is stuck on the battery empty icon or the Galaxy S2 start screen with the yellow triangle, depending whether I start from having the battery removed or restart.
Please can anybody help?
Many thanks in advance,
Alan

I'm sorry but I can't find the thread, the one I did see is for the I9100 International Exynos variant, mine is a UK T-Mobile so not sure if that's ok, and the tutoral starts with "enter download mode", I can't enter anywhere except a dead battery icon or Samsung screen with the yellow triangle, where am I going wrong?
3rd thread from the top. If you can't get into download mode, it's a trip to a Samsung service centre (or other authorised repairer).
Sticker on the phone chassis, under the battery; what does it say ?

I haven't got the phone with me at the moment to check, but pressing any of the combination of buttons I've seen documented doesn't get me anything except the empty battery icon or the Galaxy S2 start screen with the yellow triangle, which is why I assumed that nothing is going to see the phone as it is, this doesn't change even when the phone is connected to the charger, and there's no reaction at all when I connect to the laptop!
I'm guessing my happiness after your first post was somewhat premature?
OK...
What we need to do is to stop. Completely. And not assume anything else.
You don't even have the phone with you, so how do you know if the stuff suggested in that thread is possible or not with your phone ? (For example, if I had a buck for every person on here who got the button press combo for download & recovery mode the wrong way around over the past two years...)
When you get home, in front of your PC, with the phone, also search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread. That has a whole bunch of steps to follow/things to try when the phone & PC won't recognise each other. Once you can make that happen, then you follow the first thread I linked you to so you can go back to stock.

As I've already said it won't go into download or recovery mode , and as this is the first step on the tutorial it isn't going to work whether it's here or not, it's such a pity that the person who replied had to be so pompous and arrogant as I liked this site until now!
I've tried to help you as best I can with the information you've provided. Given the situation you described, the only fix is as I described. There is no other fix.
Fine. Service centre. Pay to get it fixed or throw it in the bin. No skin off my nose either way champ *shrugs* My phone ain't busted.
You're making an awful lot of assumptions for someone who has so few clues. I tried to help you, but you're clearly beyond said help (you're on ignore now, so I won't see any reply - save your fingers).
If your phone was 'dead bricked' you wouldn't even see the battery icon.....
From what I've read, your battery probably is near enough exhausted. You are going to have to find a way to get it fully charged before you try to do anything else.....try leaving the phone switched off and put it on charge.....if you get the battery charging icon, then after it's fully charged you can start attempting to recover it......

Borrow a battery or buy one, then start the Odin stuff

Remove battery, copy the ROM again to the sdcard using PC (even copy several ROMs), return sdcard into phone, boot to CWM and install the ROM from the sdcard. Done!
Alright. let us get this straight. I have searched in countless number of forums for solving my issue but I'm NOT able to fix it.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant T959. It currently seems to be "soft-bricked" (I always see a mobile connected to a computer and an exclamation icon in between). So to reset it, I have left almost not stone unturned. But no luck so far
As far as I remember, I happened to land it in trouble while I was trying to flash some secondary bootloader using ODIN.
I also tried the micro-USB JIG method by building a 300k-Ohm USB JIG on my own (using three 100k-Ohm resistors), but even that is not working for me. Whenever I connect my phone to my computer, it starts up and shows those three icons. The same happens when I remove the battery, insert it back and start the phone up again. The same happens for each of the numerous key sequences mentioned online for download/recovery mode. So literally NOTHING is working for me. I also tried OneClick.jar, Heimdall. None of them are making me lucky as the phone is not getting detected.
I believe there has to be a way to reset it somehow (although I seem to have screwed something seriously) but nothing seems to work for me. What can I possibly do now?
Attached images show the micro-USB jig that I made and the icon on my phone I see.
From my experience if you can get that far you don't need a jtag. But you did say that you flash bootloader. So you ether need to get the right combo to get to download mode or you are done with out working bootloader. The only other thing that I can think of would be to do the unbrickable mod.

Thanks jrongi1 for the reply.
>> So you ether need to get the right combo to get to download mode or you are done with out working bootloader.
I have tried many, many combos for getting the download mode but no luck so far Can you suggest some if you are aware of one?

>> I tried to know about this but I did not understand what this exactly means? I believe this involves some sort of hardware rework. Can you please point me to steps to do this? Are you referring to this procedure? If yes, I don't believe it's a solution since that procedure is just a preventive measure and not a solution (that's what I understand after reading that whole thing out).
Try that.
reboot computer, turn off phone, take out battery, put the battery back, hold volume up and down buttons and then plug in usb.

"SOFT" BRICKED WHILE USING ODIN?
If you are getting a "Phone.. ! ..Computer" image (seen above) when booting phone, yes, you are bricked but it is reversible! Just follow these steps...
Make sure you have ODIN OPEN with admin privileges!
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
You don't necessarily need the download mode image to be present. As long as you are getting the COM ID to light up yellow in ODIN, just flash back to stock like normal.

Sometimes the key combo can be a bit precarious and the timing needs to be precise. I know that when I have taken my Vibes back to stock, it takes me more than a few tries to get it right. You've said you have tried the key combos several time, I think you should keep trying them and get your timing right. I would hate for you to screw up your phone when doing the Unbrickable hardware mod, when it could be something as simple as a timing thing.
As the other guys said work with the buttons and only try the unbrickable mod as a last resort.

Thanks guys for responses.
testomat/Woody, I tried as per your steps almost 8-10 times, but that does not work either
jrongi1,
I do not wish to go for Unbrickable mod either. Anyway, I have contacted a local repairs guy for this issue. He said he can fix this issue using JTAG interface. That costs me 1500INR. That's the only solution I have I guess.
Good luck with the repair I hope that you can get going soon.

Thank you so much again!
