Running stock mk2 rooted. Gmail normally syncs ok but recently after a day or two it will randomly stop syncing. If i go into the accounts settings and force a sync it still won't, but also doesn't report an error. Rebooting fixes it. Force stopping and then syncing also seems to work. Any ideas?

I've seen a YouTube video regarding Enabling Gmail Sync. I hope it will help. Just go to YouTube and type in - How to Enable Gmail Sync on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Thanks, but that is just it. Sync is enabled (quite obviously as I get notifications for a day or two with no problem). I believe I've isolated the issue to sending large files (never finish sending, even though on wifi which should be fast). By large I mean 1mb or so.

Anyone else having issues not receiving emails with Google+ installed on their Evo 3D until you manually refresh? Without Google+ I get my emails fine, then I install Google+ and it all stops, I have to open Gmail and refresh, then I uninstall Google+ and I start receiving them again. What the hell?
Also, I've done a Hard Reset back to factory, sent myself emails and I get them no problem. I installed Google+ and no other programs, sent myself email and nothing. So I've pretty much narrowed it down to Google+
No problems here....

Just in case, check your sync settings. Maybe they're not set to sync and maybe, sync is turned off. Other than that, I can't think of what else could affect you.

yeah i am having that problem off and on sometimes i have to manually sync to get my emails and g+ notification other times i get them when im suppose to not sure whats going on with it
I'm not getting my emails on time either. I have google+ installed as well. Gonna test your theory and report back.
**Edit**
So I sent an email with google+ instaled and got nothing. Waited about 10 minutes. Uninstalled, rebooted and sent an email, got it within a minute. I think the OP is on to something.
I'm having similar issues with the sync of gmail and google+, I first noticed it when I switched on 4g which is technically not available yet but is in testing. As soon as it connected I got alerts from both services and looking at the times they were for quite a bit of time before. I noticed it seemed to be an issue when google+ was initiated. I'll test further as well.
I havent seen any issues like that at all
I have Google+ installed and have no issues receiving Gmail.
Just started having the issues but yeah. I'm going with sprint issues...
Thanks for the replies guys, I'm still having issues. As soon as I install Google+ all gmail notifications stop and I have to start manually refreshing it. Sync is turned on.
Just a quick update, following Daniel H's advice. Turning off the Google+ syncing seems to have fixed the issue. Maybe the Google+ syncing and Gmail syncing were conflicting with each other. Very strange. But anyway seems to be working good now. Getting my emails at the same time as the computer.
I'll post here to receive karma!
I came across this thread when i was googling because i was not receiving any emails. I get emails sort of frequently, around 10 per day, and i just noticed that i have gone a couple days without receiving emails. I did check my gmail app in those days to make sure i didnt have any and indeed no emails (at least showing in the app) until today i hit refresh and got like 70 emails most from days ago.
I uninstalled Google+, restarted, and the problem went away. So im acknowledging there is a problem with google+ and gmail app.
Does anyone here have an exchange account on their note, and has noticed that on occasion the email and calendar apps are eating the battery?
This is the second time this has happened to me. As you'll see by my screenshot, the usage is even higher than the display and is keeping the phone awake. This happened to me this past weekend and I deleted the account and re-added it. That seemed to clear up the issue but now it's back.
Anyone else experience this?

I had the issue with email. I just went into settings and adjusted the sync schedule. I basically turned email off while I was asleep. That worked wonders for me.

This happens to me all the time. I think it is an issue that Android has when syncing to exchange servers. mine consistently will lose sync and I get repeated unable to connect messages so basically exchange just keeps the phone awake in constant attempt to sync. I've tried other email exchange apps and they work for a few days or more but then the issue starts up again. This was a problem on my epic 4g, evo4g and my Samsung intercept. I think your best bet is to do what you've been doing, monitor when your phone is acting up, remove your exchange account and add it back in again. That's pretty much what I do now. I wish sometimes that I didn't have to use my phone for work. Fyi with touchdown email clients app this has never been an issue. Try the 30 day trial. I just didn't want to spend the money on the app.

Install CPU Spy - I'll bet that you'll see it is keeping the CPU on a high speed and not entering deep sleep. Then kill the email app via the Task Manager and go back to see if that solves the CPU.

1st post, hi!
So you have your calendar syncing with exchange?!? How?
I have an exchange email synced and set to push. I haven't had any issues with poor battery life or over heating of the phone.

I'm assuming that you are using exchange sync'ed. I do, getting e-mail fine, calendar just isn't working. After a little google fu', there are multiple reports of the same thing. If yours is working, it maybe an exchange issue on my end then.
Sorry for hi-jacking the thread.
Thanks.

I just double checked and it says my calendar is synced with exchange. I also know that I am able to accept meeting requests from within exchange emails and it adds it to my my calendar.
Now I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I use Jorte as my main calendar which is also synced to my Google calendar.

Hey everyone, new to the DNA (bought last Friday) and I'm totally a fan. The phone is awesome. However I'm having an issue where I'm having to manually go in and sync my Gmail to the phone. It doesn't automatically pull the Gmail down. I've made sure that sync is set to auto and that all the correct boxes are checked.
Currently stock running 4.1.1 (Software Number: 2.04.605.2 71ORD)
Gmail App Version: 4.2.1
Any help would be greatly apprciated.
Thanks,
Brocja01
That's pretty weird I don't have any problems with gmail sync. Do you maybe have an app installed that is controlling sync times ?
Edit: I'm also on stock btw.

I thought maybe it was the sync notification app you install for Nova, so I un-installed it and rebooted. Still not working. I'd hate to have re-install everything.
I think you covered this in your first post but have you actually gone into accounts under the normal android settings and made sure that your Gmail is supposed to sync?
It sounds stupid but it's somehow happened to me a few times where the Gmail sync box was unchecked.

Nope, it is definitely checked. I'm wondering if it is something with my account. My nexus 7 isn't syncing either.
Try going into settings and apps then clear the data for gmail and then open the app back up to let it log you back in.

If you suspect it your account (which is unlikely), check on your computer to see if it syncs.
I'm getting emails on my computer just fine. It is just my two devices that I'm not getting mail on. Factory resetting my phone this morning, will see if does anything.
I've also added my secondary gmail account to the device and that one syncs, if I send an email to both accounts, i get a notification for my secondary account but I don't get one for my primary account. Any thoughts? Would this be something to hit google up on? Is there a number I could call?
Did you try clearing the app data like I suggested? This has happened to me before on different devices and clearing the data always fixed it for me.
Sent from my HTC Droid DNA
Most definitely tried that, also factory reset the phone. Trying turning the auto sync on and off a few times and that didn't help either. It is the craziest thing. Which I could figure it out.
Obvious things to try that I'm sure you kick yourself if you forgot any one of them:
- Under the specific account settings:
- Notifications are indeed checked?
- Gmail sync is on
- Manage labels, Inbox and any other important labels are set correctly?
- Days of mail to sync are set to ~30 days?
I think those are probably an exhaustive list of on-phone options that would preclude syncing.
Yup, went through all those settings. Multiple times.
Did you hit the setting within the GMail app specifically?
I recently went through this because of the Snapdragon Battery Guru app. It shut off my GMail sync and I had a hell of a time finding out how to put it back on.
I had to open the Gmail app itself and go to:
Settings > [your email account] > Notifications (check box)
Settings > [your email account] > Gmail sync is ON
If that's not it, then I don't know what else could be the issue.
I am thinking that during initial setup you said NO to background syncing so just check this ..
Settings -> Accounts .. -> Auto Sync (SHould be ON)

definitely check that! i went a day without emails, and any notification. i thought it was weird, but didn't really pay much mind to it. then i noticed that i'd only get my whatsapp messages when i actually opened the app, i checked for autosync. somehow, it was off. it was working fine all along, and i have no idea how it got turned off. everything has been fine since, though, so definitely double check that
I can sync all items but my contacts. I get an error message saying that sync is experiencing problems.
Anyone?

Never had this problem on my v10 but my lg motion 4g from a few years ago had that happen all the time. There might still be an app called contact sync fix on gplay.. That's what I had to use way back when.

Maybe a coincidence, but I just happened to notice the same thing. I have two Google accounts attached, only one has contacts set to sync, and it's showing an error. Interesting thing is that is says 'Last successful sync 1/23/16' so it would seem that (at least for me) this has been going on for a while.
Post Script - Instead of trying to figure out why this was happening, I did the standard prescribed solution - disable contacts sync, clear contact data and cache, enable contacts sync; seems to be OK now.
So I too had syncing issues, sometimes it would take days to get an email even when I would manually refresh it. But I decided to go through and manually delete EVERY email in my gmail account, I went through and made copies of text and saved attachments through the last 7 years with google and just deleted. Everything. Sent, archieved, everything...and then hit the trashcan and deleted permanently...
What is interesting though is within MINUTES of completely wiping it all my gmail sync started working again. No joke.
I had my girlfriend send me a message, and she sent it and I recieved it while it still showed "sending" on her screen. I then went to craigslist and sent an email to myself through yahoo and got it instantly. I then emailed someone who had something I wanted and you know people never like to respond but they responded within a 2 minutes and I got it no problems.
So is this a sync conspiracy? My gmail seriously wouldn't sync but then does perfectly again just like it should.
If you have the time I recommend trying it. The whole process for me took about 30 minutes because I had to disconnect my yahoo from gmail and go back to seperate apps. But everything works great.
Let me know if this works for you!
Also, Dirty Unicorns, Franco 14e, latest PN gapps.
So I've got a kind of weird question for you, did you happen to enable the star wars theme for your Gmail account? The one that would change like everything in Google to something star wars related?
I don't think that's the case. Sometimes or receive emails instantly, other times, it syncs randomly. My email only has maybe about 8 emails that I didn't delete while the rest of it is clean.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
While what you're saying may be true, 1) The syncing problem seems to be random in regards to when it starts happening, I can install the app and have it work fine for a week or two and then it stops, and 2) Even if that DID fix the problem, it's not something I'd be willing to do.
It's pretty freaking embarrassing that Google email works totally fine on iOS devices and has big issues on Google devices.
I also have the syncing issue, sometimes it's fine, other times, no email until I manually refresh.
i feel like i've read somewhere before that this may be related to the battery optimization feature in 6.0 (doze mode), and if it's disabled for the gmail app then the syncing issues should go away. but i'm not 100%, maybe this will spark an idea from someone else as to what's causing that for you.
So no ones willing to take the leap and delete everything and try it? My gmail has been great for days...
Maybe your email was full that's why it wouldn't sync.
I faced the same sync problem when my Gmail got close to full. Once I made room, everything worked well. Since you deleted your emails that created more space, hence it started syncing.
I have to say that Inbox doesn't suffer the sync problem.

+1. The Inbox app has always synced fine for me. I switched to it last year after having intermittent sync issues with the Gmail app.
I added my gmail account to the Outlook app, that seems to be working fine, bit easier to get used to than Inbox too!
