I had an HTC Incredible 2 that I rooted and loaded CyanogenMod 7.2.0. I loved the software.
So, when I upgraded to an S4, I figured I'd do the same. But VRUEMK2 has an unlockable bootloader, so I'm stuck with SafeStrap 3.71 (which seems nice but I'm unfamiliar). And, as an unfortunate side, CyanogenMod doesn't seem compatible with SafeStrap 3.71.
Is there any way for me to get CyanogenMod on my S4, or do I need to choose one of the many other ROMs? Am I making this too complicated?
You cannot use cyanogen mod. You need to flash a rom that uses the stock touchwiz kernel

That's what I needed to know. Thank you.
I found that one thread with a list of SS-compatible ROMs. I guess I have some research to do.

Hi all,
So my question is a pretty basic one, but obvious answer doesn't seem to be logical.
I just rooted my Verizon GS4 ME7, and installed SafeStrap 3.6x build, successfully, root achieved.
Now, my question is, I've tried installing the ROMs from other devs that state that they are TWRP compatible (because SS is TWRP based), yet none of them have booted successfully. So, if the problem exists because of a lack of compatibility (for a reason I'm not fully understanding), what is the point of having SS without any ROMs being compatible?
I'm willing to help a dev with coding or something to fix the problem, but idk what to look for or why this is happening?.
HELP!
Thanks!

Just because its twrp compatible doesnt mean its SS compatible. Any rom that doesnt use the TW kernel wont work, so aosp roms are out of the question. What roms are you trying to install and stupid question, did you follow the install procedure outlined in the SS thread.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

So I guess that makes sense. I did follow the procedure outlined in the thread; to the T. I just tried the PACman ROM, SlimBut what are some roms that DO use the TW kernel? Because as far as I can tell, the only ROM that successfully flashes thus far is the HYPERDRIVE ROM, which is stock minus the bloatware and adding a few tweaks.

Hi,
I have always used CleanRoms on my S4 up until they stopped making them. I've been using the last version they released (1.6.5) with no issues.
I prefer a stock debloated rom that just works. I don't care much about fancy options. My current baseline version is I545VRUEMJ7. I did upgrade my modem a few weeks ago. I'm also using TWRP for recovery.
I'm looking for a rom that is like clean. Basically a debloated stock rom that just works. Something like what CleanRom was. I see all these roms have do's and dont's and I don't want to do one of the dont's.
My only needs are:
Debloated, with root so I can use it as a hotspot.
What do you suggest?
Thanks for any input.
Thanks

so you were MDK and loki'd then?
as for ROMS, goes back to preferences of what you want. Mnay good ones out their that I have read about. Me, as I have a ME7 phone, been limited to TW stock based Roms I load thru safestrap. I have tried all that were available to me and have settled on Hyperdrive. Currently running 10.2 with hopes of moving to HD11 once safestrap is fully developed for that move.

I had tried 10.2 but had problems with the rom.
I believe I am MDK and loki'd.
I am a little confused as I read thru forums stating instructions for installing cwm/twrp. As I have pretty much gone thru every thread and basically realize i am pretty much stuck with safestrap twiz roms. Not a happy camper. Is there a work around or a thread I have missed?
I have had this schi545 for a week now. Is there light at the end of this tunnel? as I am not a big touchwiz fan due to themeing limitations..
anyone above the first firmware MDK, can only use safestrap and roms running on the TW kernel. I recommend you look into eclipse if you dont like TW. Its aosp themed and feels like it, but runs off the TW kernel.

That is correct. The original MDK bootloader is the only one that could be exploited (through a process called loki) which allowed flashing a custom recovery. VZW locked things down after that and there is no exploit available.
Hello there, xda! I've been having quite a few issues installing Cyanogenmod (and many other custom ROMs) onto my Gs4 and was wondering if someone might be able to walk me through the steps of installing the custom ROM on my specific device. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Verizon with Android 4.4.2 and NC5 as my baseband.

If you don't have the MDK bootloader with the Loki hack, you cannot run CM and other AOSP based roms. There is a ROM however that's safe strap compatible

Thank you for that suggestion! But do you know if it's possible to downgrade from NC5 to MDK or earlier versions? I would rather do that than use safestrap, honestly.

Nope. Not possible at all. Your only option is Safestrap.
Sent from my NCC-1701 using Tapatalk.
I have installed the Safestrap 3.7.5 on my s4, yet i can not install the cm 12.1.
It does not matter how many times i have tried, i can not succeed.
It always ends up getting into stock recovery.
Please, show me whether i can have the custom rom installed.
Many thanks.

If my memory serves me correct, you cannot install CM/AOSP based ROMs with SafeStrap.

oops. thank you.
Anyway, is there any installable custom Rom, or any way to get these custom Rom installed?
If possible, do help me.
Thanks a lot.

Thank you very much. i do appreciate it
there's also eclipse and kitpop if you want more of a stock android look and feel
Dev work on Eclpise has been stopped with no sign of it starting up again.
npJohnson is busy with the bootloader stuff, so there IS activity with kitpop, but very little. You want him to work on the bootloader, because then you can get cm 12.1 and whatnot.
That said, bot are rock solid ROMs with good battery life from my experience.
