I would just flash one of the 4.4 tar files via odin as opposed to hassling with getting OTA. Freeza and other's have some in the Sprint Android Development forum, just follow the instruction in the OP. If you're hellbent on getting it via OTA. I'd suggest flashing the tar for stock MJ4 (4.3) then taking the OTA that way.

Hey Gack69, I appreciate that, will try your method. OTA method not important just didnt no which direction to take. Thanx again

You're welcome. There are already some custom 4.4 ROMs up too. Sacs is nice and mostly stock in appearance. .. Then there's JB's KitKatKiller (K3) which is themed and modded. Depends on what your personal preference are.
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk

Yeah Odin a 4.4 tar, you can't take a Ota while being rooted even with Wanam. It will always fail or can in some cases brick your device. Odin a kitkat then root with Cf and then add your recovery just be sure you download a Kitkat recovery. After you can use any rom you wish.

How do I update software on a rooted Note 3?

I have a rooted Sprint Samsung Galaxy note 3.
my current Android version is : 4.3
Build number: JSS15J.N900PVPUBMJ4
I received a notification for an update but since my device is rooted, I can't do OTA updates.
so my questions are; Is it worth going through the trouble of updating, and if so, how do I go about doing it???
And as always, thank a lot guys, for your help.

Since you are rooted, you can just goto the Android development forum and use rwilco's one step to go back completely stock and then take the ota (may or may not work to get the ota) or just goto the Android development forum and use one of the methods there to upgrade to KK.

I read that rooting a phone changes the KNOX counter and, after unrooting, the KNOX counter remains changed so that updates are not possible OTA. Unfortunately, I cannot post the link but it is on the galaxynote3root.com website.
Would someone care to comment on this, please?
My Note3 is rooted at the moment and, before unrooting to update, I would like to know whether after unrooting, the update problem still exists or not
Hope you understand and someone can help. Thanks.

Just flash back to stock using Odin then reboot into stock recovery and wipe data .... you will need to have your SD card removed for it to work also .... you may then have to reflash the Odin rom again and you will have official status and be able to accept ota or just use the nc5 Odin tar and you are good
..
The KNOX counter has nothing to do with it ... it's the official status

Thanks very much for your answer. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject.
I guess that I can flash back to stock using Odin quite easily, but how do I "reboot into stock recovery and wipe data"?
And, what is "the nc5 Odin tar"?
This is the latest ota nc5 .... it has directions in the op for using this

updating without unrooting?
Sorry if the answer is here, but I can't seem to find it. I want to be able to record conversations on my phone, but can't because it was Android 4.4.when I rooted. I absolutely do not want to unroot. So, my question is, can I update without unrooting and if so, how do I do it?

No you have to be unrooted to take an OTA update. But there are other options. First what version of KitKat are you on ? If you are on say 4.4.2 NC5 and you want to get to 4.4.4 NH7 or 4.4.4 NK4, you can unroot your device and take the OTA. Or you can flash a complete new version of KitKat 4.4.4 with odin, and then root your device again.
However, if you are rooted on 4.4.2 NC5 with TowelRoot, and no custom recovery installed. Chances are you have not tripped KNOX yet. So, if you update to 4.4.4 NH7 or NK4 or install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM you will trip KNOX. Here is my thread for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/samsung-note-3-rom-flashin-basics-t2896440 .
As for recording conversations have you checked the play store for an app here is a link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.killermobile.totalrecall&hl=en Enjoy !!!
Many thanks. All I really wanted was to be able to record conversations. I tried 4 of the apps listed in the Play store. 2 of them recorded just my side of a conversation with blanks where the other side should be - and the other 2 just recorded static. Total Recall works like a charm though. Thanks again.

I'm in the same boat, I've got an app I need to run, but can't due to the version difference. I used Odin with one click flash (no data loss) to root. Awesome because I didn't loose any apps or any data whatsoever. My question is this, being I'm already rooted with MJ4 by TWRP. Is there a way to upgrade without losing my data (apps , contacts or any sort of complete reset that loses everything) or having to unroot?
My apologies on not knowing this well enough, can I flash the newer version as it is, or will that cause an issue? I'm not even sure what version we're currently on.
Thank you for your work and all that has gone into creating these tools and available sources for us to work on our phones.

Any thoughts?

[SUCCESS] Odin backflash to MJ9 from updated ND3 to regain root

I just wanted to confirm that you can Odin back to MJ9 4.3 from the newest ND3 4.3 to regain root. This is for 4.3 bootlocked GN2s ONLY. It was quite painless actually, all my data was as it was before. I backed up to the internal memory using Helium just in case (since I lost root), but I was able use saferoot without issue and am now back to rooted.
I had used Kingo before to root, so I am actually glad to use saferoot this time since I am planning to install SafeStrap and flash N3BULA over stock soon.

This is what I have been looking for except it says to "REGAIN" root.. I have never had it (ROOT) to start with.. So will this still work?
and
where do I get the correct MJ9 since I did not get it off my phone before I lost it.?? or am I ODIN back to out of the box state which is VRALJB?
Odin 7 or Odin 9
I have read ODIN7 ? but Odin9 is newest as far as I can tell...want to double check.
thanks so much!!!!

thebat1, since I am assuming you are on bootlocked ND3 from your screenshot, you will mess up/brick your phone trying to flash VRALJB. You can only go back to MJ9 at this point. The thread I used which is the same posted by iooooooc -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...4207&nocache=1 says "4.1.1 VRALJB- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2043636 (Unless you purchased your device within the first month of release and never took the OTA update, DO NOT use this)".
I am pretty sure it doesn't matter if you rooted under MJ9 or not. I was able to Odin without root and I wouldn't see why not being rooted when on MJ9 would not enable you to use Odin (since the whole point of Odin is to flash Samsung phones). I'd make a Helium backup just in case though.
You can read the thread I linked and posted by iooooooc to find out how to reflash. It's the same one I used. It has links to Odin and the MJ9 firmware (look for "VRUEMJ9 4.3" with the warning "ONLY USE THIS IF YOU TOOK THE 4.3 OTA!!") and the PIT file you'll need.
You can also read about and get links to all flavors of Odin (you need v3.07 for the VZ Note II) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539
Finally, to root, here's the main thread for Saferoot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Everything I read is pretty straightforward.
I also haven't received any notification to upgrade back even though I haven't used the .bak renaming method which is interesting.

I decided to bite-the-bullet after reading your post, and all I had to do was re-root as well. All said and done it took me 30 minutes tops to have my phone back. I also used Kingo last time, but after ND3, the version of Kingo I used to root MJ9 didn't recognize the phone and the latest version was so full of dire warnings I immediately aborted.
Thanks guys!

I just received a replacement for my broken Note 2, which I previously had rooted with N3bula. To root my old phone, given it came with 4.1, I just had to Odin the MJ9 files, and then flash N3bula with TWRP . When I got my replacement, it updated to ND3 before I realized what was going on. Does anyone know what files I actually need to flash to get back to MJ9 from ND3? I found a file called I605VRUEMJ9.tar on one of the links posted recently. Since the actual ROM on the phone is the stock 4.3 rom, I assume I don't need to worry about system.img. I don't know about boot.img, cache.img, recovery.img, sboot.bin. I am confident I should flash tz.img, modem.bin, hidden.img.
Thanks!

If you go to Droidstyle's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34891181 , and then go to section 1b of the guide, you can revert back to MJ9 by following the guide's instructions. You'll want to use the stock file for (VRUEMJ9 4.3) if you're wanting to revert back from ND3.
After you get back to MJ9, you can get root access with saferoot..... Here's the link to saferoot-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=48392009

Amazing..WTG, XDA!
New user here. Been reading a bunch of posts lately as I finally got around to trying to root my SCH-1605, which I have through VZW. For a long time, my big concern was interference on the VZW side. Finally, warranties expired and the urge peaked... just in time for the ND3 OTA update. I tried a couple of methods I found - no success. Finally stumbled on some threads that basically said - ND3 = Out of Luck.
Then I found this post.. :victory:
Truly awesome. Worked like a charm. Looking up good info on locking down the OTA pushes next.
My observations of the differences between my previous attempts and what was missing:
My first attempts:
I neglected to include the 16GB PIT file referenced in the links above (** Note: a few guides I popped across mentioned making sure that only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" are checked. When you include the PIT file, it will auto-check "Re-Partition". I left this checked, and it worked like a charm. Can't speak as to the offset of UNchecking this, as - like I said - I left it checked)
I used a different .md5 file that would flag as a fail despite my efforts (I was using a CF autoroot md5). I'm fairly certain this failed due to the OTA update, though it may have been the lack of a PIT file. If someone could provide some more info there, I'm totally open to listen!
Bottom line - my experience was pretty painless after doing adequate research. Thanks a ton! :highfive:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I also came across some info stating that the downgrade to the MJ firmware might flag the KNOX (I believe?) or a similar issue. Anyone run across any of those issues using these methods? If someone has a quick link to how I could check this for myself, I'd be very appreciative.
@Tangescence
Glad to hear you had success with rooting . This link should help you check on your knox counter status:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48758233&highlight=odin#post48758233
If "Knox Warranty Void" is at zero, you didn't trip the counter.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Knox warranty void: 0
Confirmed. The flashback left KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0
Lists as Samsung Official Binary with a System Status of Custom.
Looks good!
I know this is a bit of a side tangent, but safestrap should work with MJ9 and saferoot to allow custom ROMs despite the locked bootloader - right?
Again, many thanks to the community!
Right, safestrap was designed to be used for people with the locked bootloader on a rooted MJ9. Here is the safestrap thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51616723
I don't know a lot about safestrap, but I believe the ROM slots are not working yet so you'll have to install a custom Rom over the stock ROM if you want to use it. You'll have to do more research to make sure you know how to use it if you want to give it a go.

Awesome - I'll be researching it tonight and tomorrow. Will post to the safestrap thread with my results and probably a heads up here to redirect. Again, tons of thanks!
Confirmed working
My Verizon Note 2 broke so under warranty I got a replacement device with the latest VRUAND3 build installed. It literally drove me nuts because I was so used to having the advantage of a rooted device with the bootloader unlocked. After doing some research, I came across the information on this thread and it helped me with having at least root access which allows me to take advantage of my Titanium Backup and other apps tailored to rooted devices.
Thank you very much for this post. I hope the devs will one up on Verizon and give the community the ability to have a unlocked bootloader soon. I like the connection speed and coverage with Verizon but their method of controlling how their customers use their devices is just annoying. I paid good money for this phone Verizon! I'm going to do what I wish to do with it to make it unique and personal to me. They just don't seem to understand that. Once again... Thanks. ROOT 4TW!

[Q] 5.0.1 MDK semi-brick help needed

Hi everyone, I haven't been active in awhile, and decided to upgrade from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1.
Device is:
Verizon Galaxy S4
MDK / Loki
TWRO 2.8.7.0
was on 4.4.4
I used the FlashFire upgrade method, because I wanted to have that upgrade modem, baseband etc. everything I needed.
Prior to root, I upgraded my TWRP, I did a TWRP backup.
I downloaded Odexed 5.0.1 stock update from the thread, and followed the instructions, it installed but on final reboot, it just got stuck at the Samsung / Custom screen. When I went to boot into recovery, it's now the stock system recovery LRX22c.I545VRUG0C1
Gives an error on the bottom as
Code:
#MANUAL MODE#
Appling Multi-CSC
Applied The CSC-code: VZW
remove failed file /system/csc_contents/ (read only file system)
If I try to apply update via external storage, using stock update I get:
Code:
footer is wrong
signature verification failed
Anyway I can flash TWRP via adb, then just re-flash the rom with loki manually? Or anyway without having to use odin and downgrade? I won't lose loki root will I? What do I do? Thanks in advanced.
well I'm trying to flash back to MDK via odin, and I keep getting aboot.img failure.. i'm really at a loss here, I can't even odin back to MDK.

What instructions did you use? SS and FF were made specifically for locked bootloaders so they require a different instructions for flashing. You basically ignored the benefits of being on MDK by doing whatever you did. Doesn't sound like you're on MDK anymore and I need more details to help. Someone else might be able to help you.
If all you wanted was the OC1 modem, could have just flashed it from here. People have reported issues with TWRP versions above 2.8.4.0-jfltexx.

The tutorial said for mdk, I followed it exactly and it didn't work. I then ****ed up by flashing lollipop through stock recovery so it flashed the new baseband, and I removed loki. That's my bad, however I did follow the instructions and it didn't work. I should have just flashed 5.1 manually. Oh well. Is there safestrap for lollipop, or a way to downgrade to me7 to use safestrap?

SS isn't compatible with Lollipop. Recommend switching to FF, apparently it can flash Stang's ROM on stock OC1. Still need root. Or look into MultiSystem but I'm not knowledgeable with them but hear of success with them.

You can use king root to get root, then search for instructions to swap to supersu. From here should be able to install FF.
Good luck.

Help SGS4 AT&T (jflteatt)

After an unsuccessful flash of Xposed Framework with Chainfire's FlashFire Beta, my device wouldn't boot past the AT&T logo. I attempted to flash NB1 stock firmware using Odin from OC4, but I have the same issue.
Specifics
Device - Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T (jflteatt)
Firmware - NB1 Stock I think, KNOX flag is untripped but download says I have custom Android version. Tried flashing with Odin and got reset/pass. KNOX flag was tripped before, I read its an eFuse so I'm confused
Should I try flashing again or what... I'd like a quick answer as I currently have no phone. Mod feel free to move this if its in the wrong forum. If you need more information just let me know
Samsung devices are know to have issue with xposed. They made changes to the art runtime and last I heard xposed has not fixed it yet.
So if I want Xposesd I should stay on KitKat
How can I get my device working... I've tried what other threads suggested (cache wipe, factory reset, battery pull for thirty seconds). Should I try the stock image again with Odin or try Kies?

xposed works fine on lollipop, but you have to use wanams version of the framework for tw
OK, thanks for the advice. FlashFire can run with a locked bootloader, right?
Also, I still can't figure out how to get my phone booting again I would greatly appreciate advice on how to get past the at&t logo
EDIT
My bootloader is locked so I can only flash with Odin and stock recovery. Took the AT&T OTA before I knew what I was doing.
I found the solution! I was trying to flash a MBL stock AIO with Odin, but after I took an OTA from AT&T a while back, they locked downgrading that far because it's vulnerable to Loki. I found a thread on another forums that stated the firmware was mislabeled. I feel lucky, could have hard bricked it! I managed to install a (proper) deodexed NB1 firmware, rooted it with Towelroot, and upgraded to Lollipop through a FlashFire flash. I was able to install Xposed successfully. Thanks for all the help! It's greatly appreciated!

Refurbished S4 w 4.4.2 not activated yet

Just bought a refurbished Galaxy S4 as my other phone was stolen. I am on Verizon. My S4 looks brand new and it's running 4.4.2! I would love to root and then probably flash to cm12. How would I root right now? The s4 has been out for some time and maybe the threads are old. Do I root before activating?
Build kot49h.i545vrufnc5
Please help. I have been without root on another phone for over a year. You can imagine my pain.
NO CM12. Nc5 does not have an unlocked bootloader.
As far as rootz towelroot still works. 1 click apk by geohot.
nc5
Tried the towelroot apk and it does not root, work. i get this message
"Only the Galaxy S4 active is currently supported. If you see this error and you think you have the right phone, email geohot at... i know i have an S4 but cant tell if it is an s4 Active. i just left verizon with an activated phone and it is already trying to push an update. I dont know if i should or what to do.

Make sure you are on nc5. Screenshot your settings if you want.
Next, make sure you got it from the real site... That doesn't sound like the right one.
If you have physical menu and back buttons, that's the s4 active. It's ATT only, in which case, this is the wrong device.
NC5
I just gave it a go again after rebooting and it worked. I have root. Now I need to figure out how to remove all this bloated crap. Any ideas. Wish I could flash a custom though. I'm still getting this annoying update window.

There are some debloater scripts on general forum, but I think the best choise to debloat is installing some file explorer (E.G. MiXplorer) and go to /system/app and /system/priv-app and delete everything you don't want. If you don't know what apps to delete This guide it's great
Btw, if you want a rom you can choose any 4.4.2 or newer, don't try any lower android version rom. To install custom roms on this device you can use Flashfire or Safestrap(only for kitkat or lower), I suggest you to use safestrap if you're on kitkat (keep in mind that rom slots doesn't work, you have to flash in stock slot any rom).
oops
I had a rom Hyperdrive installed and it was running well for a minute but I just had to try another rom "Galaxy S6 Port by Albe95"! Now i can make calls and recieve texts but not send them. i have no internet unless its wifi. Im not rooted and Towelroot wont work. No recovery available now and my Android Version is 5.0.2. Im really stuck and nervous. I need my phone for work. Any ideas?

No worries. I think you have to flash the OC1 modems for lollipop roms to work when coming from kk. Check your bootloader version, if it is a NC[place number here] you can odin back to the right update and use the flashfire or safestrap to use the installation instructions in the second post of the ROM forum. Your other option is to stay and flash modems. This is how to do it:
If you lost your recovery:
1)Get root (NOTE: you don't need to do the kernel flashing part because you are already on of1

2)Get Flashfire
3)Flash this (fist link) if it fails to solve the problem this
If this doesn't solve your problem and you can't go back to kitkat, you should odin OC1 and root. All credit goes to their respective contributors. Hope I helped

I tried the 2nd option of rooting and it didn't work. I'm still on oc1. How would I Odin back or what files would I use? It's getting confusing.
