Original Note and Galaxy gear - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

The Galaxy gear is being blown out and can now be had for under a $100. Our notes are not officially supported but has anyone successfully paired these two?
I haven't considered a smart watch up until now...but at this price, I would bite just to fool around with it if I knew there was some custom rom that could make it work.

Yes I have paired the two. Not everything will fully work though. If the i717 had a 4.3 touchwiz rom, everything would work. Unfortunately the i717 only has a 4.1.2 touchwiz rom. I've tried pairing with 4.1.2 and can only get the phone, and media player working. No weather, no s-voice, or notifications. If you pick a 4.3 or higher rom you can follow this thread about pairing with the nexus 5. It will walk you thru the process of installing all the apps properly to get notifications working. You can also install a custom rom onto the gear. As long as your comfortable with tethering data over bluetooth to your watch, It's highly recomended! It's like having a fully functioning android phone in your watch!!!

Should I buy a Galaxy Player?

I am looking for a device mainly as a VOIP device. I can get a Galaxy samsung S for around 70-100 around here average from craigslist but was also considering a player 4.0 or 5.0 - problem is the 4.0s go for a little bit more (right now I have a guy willing sell me his mint one for $85). However, I've seen the 5.0 for around 120-150 refurbished or like new used and really like 5" screen. What would you guys do?

No one?!
Do you also want to use it in long trips or for GPS? If then the extra battery capacity from the galaxy player 5 suits the needs. Because honestly all of the following works perfectly well for a VOIP. Also if you are looking for development support from XDA you might consider the galaxy s. I would personally get the galaxy s because of the better custom roms and the capability of using a backup battery, which a player 5 cannot do

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is based on the Galaxy S1 so I'd go with the S1 because there are way more devs for it. Spec vs Spec the only thing in favor of the GP 4.0 is that it has duel stereo speakers and that's about it lol. The S1 has a much better screen and better camera. Now the 5.0 is a little different. It has of course the Screen Size, LED Flash, and a much bigger battery. Also it has a bit more devs, however it's screen is actually worse than the 4.0's and it uses a Yamaha DAC so it's sound quality isn't as nice as the GP4.0/S1 (whom use the same DAC). So like I said go for the S1 and be careful shopping on craiglist.
5.0 is worth it with reservations - old rom and no updates

hi
I've already bought a 5.0 from new and overall I'm reasonably impressed. It's a good vivid player with all the flexibility of Android to boot and a microSD card slot!.
I decided to purchase a separate music device rather than run my phone that way to avoid running my battery down...
However I would warn you that for the UK version that I bought, it seems to be stuck running Android 2.2.2 with no sign of an update any time this century. It's starting to be restrictive with regards to apps. Furthermore although some will tell you "just root it and update the rom"...I've yet to see a simple (for a noob) rooting process and set of roots that would at least match the stability of the stock version for the 5.0/4.0.
I've searched the fora and there's a lot of info to digest....
Did you try superoneclick?

Just some food for thought. I noticed that the Galaxy Player line is no longer available to buy, brand new, from Amazon (only third party sellers) and that Best Buy shows any of the players as "not available for shipping". I was curious what was going on and begin to find that it is possible the Galaxy Player line is being entirely discontinued. I hated to hear this, but think it is important to keep in mind as Dev support could become continuously smaller - it isn't large by any means at the moment.
If you are okay with the possibility of no support outside of forums, I would say to go for it. They are great devices as media players and even a type of 'wifi only' phone. Good luck with your decision!

Good choice you should be careful buying a used galaxy though. They are notorious for the power button breaking. There's a workaround however by installing an app where you can turn it on with a volume button.

They are still available on Amazon UK:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...alaxy+player&rh=i:aps,k:samsung+galaxy+player
I looked up kies mini and it seems they are device specific, I've installed kies regular and it says I'm on the latest firmware already.
I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

uninstall Kies regular and try Kies mini. mini upgrades basically all the galaxy s products so it's safe to assume that it would work on the gp. plus it was mentioned by Samsung themselves in order to upgrade the galaxy players.
gingerbread is not exactly a huge improvement in terms of performance, but it gets way better app compatibility. for example you don't need to root your gp if you want to use the power button alternative if the button ever breaks. and it's a more appealing to the buyer's eyes.
um... that's all the differences I know of

I've just given it a go and kies mini isn't recognizing the device, if I connect it in mass storage mode it tells me to reconnect in kies mode, when I do that it just sits there completely unaware I have even plugged it in, while the computer makes the 'connect' sound followed shortly afterwards by the 'disconnect' sound.
Thanks for your help anyway

I ended up getting a mint Droid X for $45 after flashing ICS I was really satisfied with it as it seemed just as fast as my old G2x (that I killed trying to fix - so many probs and bad battery life)... however while battery life was decent 6 hours screen time, I decided to try a GB rom and its at 49% after 10 hours of almost continuous usage.... the phone, while not as powerful as the latest dual cores or even the galaxy S is very smooth and fits my needs... highly recommend anyone who is in my shoes to check out used phones to use as a VOIP cuz there's really good devices/deals out there!

In the menu of kies mini was an option to reinstall drivers I tried that but after leaving it for 20min at least it was still at 0% so I canceled it. Are the drivers on the Samsung website different? When I look at the support section for the YP-G70 it doesn't give any drivers.

If you want stable look for custom roms that are based off of stock, like Chip v1.5. These ones provide mostly, if not, all the features that are available for the default rom and provide extra features. Check this out for more details. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

[Q] Anyone using Bluetooth 4.0 LE/Smart with a 4.3 Rom?

I don't have enough posts to query the development forums, but can anyone confirm whether or not they've gotten bluetooth smart/4.0 BLE working with any of the available 4.3 based roms?
I've been holding out on buying a Bluetooth HRM for a long time, now (actually bought this phone BECAUSE it advertised bluetooth 4.0 as a feature....), and may be willing to lose touchwiz to use one, early.
Yes, I'm aware legacy bluetooth HRM's are available, but I know myself well enough to know I won't remember to charge it every day or two.
Thank you very much, in advance.

I really want to know the answer to this also.
I got an email from Runtastic July 31 claiming the following:
"
Runtastic Bluetooth Smart Combo Heart Rate Monitor
NEW - Compatible with all new Smaprtphones with Android 4.3. and
Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, S4, Note 2.
+ Compatible with iPhone 4S & 5
+ Low battery consumption
+ For outdoor and indoor fitness
activities (e.g. treadmill, ...)
+ Heart rate data transmission
+ Bluetooth Smart technology
+ Washable soft chest strap
[Buy Now]
"
I said, "Wait.... What!?" It seems like I've been waiting for this for years at this point. I wanted an H7, not an old zephyr hxm, but it hasn't been compatible. Now suddenly they claim the runtastic model works on the Note 2? There's no official 4.3, is there?? I searched these forums, best I could find was CM 10.2 derived ROMS, but they all say it includes CM's bug list--but I couldn't find that anywhere either. All I can figure is this was a misprint.
I'm with you, I care about this also, but I don't think enough people do.

I finally sucked it up and bought the legacy zephyr HRM.
It cost $15 more than the BT-LE version, and the battery life is crap, but I'm happy and endomondo seems a LOT more accurate, now.
This phone is dumb. Google needs to get their crap together, or put a leash on their representative manufacturers advertising unusable phone features.

It works great on any of the TW based ROMs, but as far as the 4.3 based ones, it is getting closer. Tried a few of the nightlies since a couple of weeks ago and my Fitbit finally shows up in CM10.2, but still won't pair. This is one of the few things keeping me from running CM10.2 full-time.
I keep flashing a nightly every few days just to check progress, but end up going back to my nandroid TW backup.
Does this work with CM 10.2 and/or CM11 nowadays? I'm thinking of buying a Fitbit and was wondering if it will sync with the phone.

What are you looking for in a rom?

I'm currently deciding to bring back my old rom series 'Super Charged Wiz' from the dead for the note 3 but I wanna hear what the community would like in a stock rom?
Thanks

I think it was in Ricks Rom a TW base but it had a theme manager of sorts with downloadable themes which was pretty nice and WiFi tether and flashlight toggles baked into the Rom not having to flash after as an add on. If I think of more I'll let ya know!
Went back to CleanROM myself even though it's no longer being updated
Loved nitro's eclipserom but ran into a couple of glitches and wanted something with more stability
what I'd like to see...

I would like to see someone integrate the older location settings features - specifically, allowing the device to do a true GPS "hardware only" feature. Right now, with 4.3 and 4.4.2 on verizon anyway, it says GPS only, but it's not - it is so tethered to Verizon wireless location services. and it's all downhill from there - besides, the claim that carriers / samsung make that there is more precision when using google / verizon etc is pure bunk... garbage. there is more margin of error in data-based location services than true-GPS 10ft of accuracy and a decent maps-on-board GPS period - a great application example is co-pilot, which allows maps on your card, and will use hardware only GPS - if toggled.
my issues with provider based services are the following -
a. provider based location services consume data
b. provider based services are subject to collection (your whereabouts) and marketing - it becomes a manipulative marketing tool.
Finally - there are applications, like power toggles and most of the nfc software that are designed to allow hardware only GPS toggling, yet the location settings in the phone don't (even if it says they are GPS only, it;s not..)
i'd like to see the older option returned.
honestly you should start with porting the s5 rom to the note 3. There's a ported s5 rom on the galaxy note 3 section. We currently have some great roms on the verizon note 3.
been super happy with what @hsbadr has been doing with Jasmine over here
his next stop is a full S5 port and has update speeds from user input faster then i have ever seen.

[Q] Gear Fit Develo-bility

Just a quick question from a long time XDA post-reader, recently turned question-asker. I have done some development for Android, having created an app, and am aware of ROMs having flashed Cyanogenmod to my HTC Desire C and Kindle Fire HD 2012.
I love to tinker and really utilise a new device as much as I possibly can, and am considering buying the Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit. The only quam I have is the apparent lack of ability to create firmware and otherwise modify the Fit. I know the Fit runs an custom-built RTOS, and that it has a download mode where firmware updates can be flashed using ODIN or similar. Is there any way that a custom firmware could created, or modified from the original?
Furthermore, during my internet digging, I came across several sites proclaiming that Samsung have released an SDK for the Fit allowing rudimental custom notification pushes and similar basic functionality. Is there anyone that can vouch for this ability and support for the SDK?
P.S. As a new user I am unable to post external links. The SDK's are called Samsung mobile, and S Health SDK. A quick search on the Samsung developer site returns them.

They released Samsung Mobile SDK, but libs for Gear Fit are still missing. IMHO I think that they will never release libs for Gear Fit. It's more then 4 months from publishing Gear Fit on market. I don't recommend use this gadget witn non-Samsung mobile. With Samsung mobile everything was working very well, but now I have LG G3 and I can't use Fitness functions and also there are problems with reconnection via BT.

ROM recommendation for non-techie friend

You know the drill. A friend or coworker asks you to fix their tech.
In this case a coworker of my wife's has an old Tab 10.1 ( samsung galaxy tab P7510 )they want to use at their house but it's not useful as is.
I recommended that upgrading the ROM might be the only way to really make it useful. Not being familiar with this device I'm deferring to the experts here for a ROM recommendation. Now these are just your average mildly tech savvy end users. They don't want an unstable or experimental or bleeding edge ROM.
I'm simply looking for a ROM that is stable and that supports the most hardware. It doesn't have to be the latest bleeding edge ROM. Just one new enough to run the latest apps like NetFlix, Evernote, Spotify, Play Music, Apple Music, Facebook & Messenger, etc.
Which means Lollipop or later IMO.
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance
