Flashing a backup without custom recovery - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all before I get flamed I did not brick a tablet without having a cwm installed first and a nandroid backup. However I am trying to help someone who has. The tablet is an allwinner a23 not in some peoples opinion worth a lot of effort to fix. We have an identical tablet with the same firmware. If I root and install a custom recovery on the unbricked tablet can that zip be flashed without a custom recovery? I have looked about a bit and there seems to be conflicting opinions on this. The only prob I can see is the stock recovery may not have the option to wipe the dalvik cache.

If it's totally unlocked I would have to say yes..but the ? Is if it is unlocked why not just flash a custom recovery than you will have the option..

I think the answer to why not flash a custom recovery is best known to himself. Fastboot doesn't seem to be working and apparently never has so trying to push cwm is no longer an option I guess there is not much to lose by trying to flash a zip file. If it doesn't work well he will learn a valuable life lesson.

Hello...hello... I am the guy with tablet probl.
Captain i apreciate your help allot to solve my probl.
So... Has the Captain say,
Dont have any CWM on tablet, only the defaul cmd wit NO option to flash or others. The options are: 1 restore factory default delete data user.2 Restored from internal memory,3-Restore from external memory, and 4- restore from cache. That s all i have in factory defalut CMW.
So...if i find the ORIGINAL rom of tablet, i must flash my tablet with livesuite or phoenixusb not from original cmw meniu because that is only for restore soft stuff i think. The probl is i CANT find the original firmware ...
I find a post with a firmware for A23 model Allwinner but im not sure if is for my model type so i dont wanna risk till im not sure (
I have the imag firmware and flashing soft in my pc if iy help you guys, i can post it here or give you the link to check.
2-probl - I cant make any nandroid backup from working tablet because dont hv an CMW working for this model ((
3- the adb shell cant see my model tablet, only an chinesse soft see it with name A70h ...but this soft is an file manager not for flashing or something so...no use for .
So has you see ...im stuck in this point no clue foward...

The probl is like this :
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb device
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>
So... no device found
With adb on my phone i extended the internal for apps, with settinstalllocation 2 bla bla etc.. so with my phone it work..with my wife phone, work again.... with terorist tablet ...NO WAY .. not evean see as a device ..grrrrrrr

I just found this app which says it can take a nandroid backup without recovery mode its called online nandroid backup from the play store. Its not compatible with all devices but worth a shot. If you root the other tablet then install titanium backup. Backup all apps and data on the second tablet then factory reset it. Install online nandroid backup and take the backup and flash it to the problem tablet. Then restore the titanium backup to get all apps and settings back. Doesn't get adb working but it may just sort the ROM

I so that app too on market ,thinking to try this method but have to ask: if that doesn t work , i kill the tablet forever ?? Because my wife just says to me ,if you brick my tablet you have an divorce and if my tablet die,you die !! ))))) So very risky .
so let me get it straight ,
after i make titanium backup, i take the backup files from working tablet and put it on damage tablet on the sd card. After this,i flash WHAT ?? because the damage tablet has no working firmware so how do i flash it?????.BTW firmware... did you have a look on firmware adress i give to you?? is not the original firmware for my model ?? http://www.techknow.me/forum/index.php?topic=7854.0

Download this and see if it picks up your device..https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e+now&pcampaignid=APPU_88oqU6fgCoqy2QXhzIC4Bw it seems like drivers for adb and your tablet are not installed/installed properly

OK let me start by saying none of this is risk free. That being said I don't think this will brick your wife's tablet.
You need to take a NANDROID backup of your wife's tablet this is what you are going to flash onto your tablet.
This is where titanium backup comes into it. In order to preserve your marriage you will need to give your wife her tablet back without wiping it.
The Nandroid backup would be best if you did it just after a factory reset this is not essential but would help eliminate risks.
So in order of how to do this:
Root your wife's tablet using the method used to root yours in the first place.
Take a TITANIUM backup of your wife's tablet. This will preserve all her apps and data. To restore at the end of the process.
Now perform a factory reset. Download and install online nandroid backup from the play store.
Run the Nandroid backup. If this works you should now have a full nandroid backup of your ROM.
Flash the backup to YOUR tablet and wipe the cache if all goes well the tablet should now boot.
Now restore the TITANIUM backup to your wife's tablet to restore her apps and data.
This will not remove the root from her tablet if you want to remove root access from her tablet then we can go through that later
These instructions are correct to the best of my knowledge I am not responsible for anything you do to your tablet

Captain ,is desaster...bad news. today i was at service again, and told technician about youre advice with online nandroid backup. I pick up my whife tablet ( she dont no that) and go to service with booth tablet and try many variants. One of them it was this with nandroid you told me , and surprise...NOOT WORKING !!!! The program it stop and reboot the tablet because dont reconize the model type. All the variants we try on service ,fail because model unkown. We try and flash many firmwares (diffrent firmwares) the same... all fails,we have diffrent errors after install .Example:1- firmware flashed- everything ok,the tablet boot wellcomme scren BUT no camera function,no g sensor (rotate screen chaotic up and down) 2-FW flashed, the same...all ok ,booting...i have camera ok but- NO WIFI this time, and g sensor again is chaotic .and so on ...every FW i try on service has the own errors because is not for this model is jus from closer model ...so ..no luck to repair the tablet at all. The technician say to me to let the tablet one more day to try the last 3 FW he has...if is not working with those...is game over (( sad moment I hope the chinesse sailor who asamble this type of tablet on the ship to have the same faith like Titanic . This tablet is killing me. About nandroid online backup, i get it full, and i tested on my mobile phone...work like charm on the phone..it s perfect but on the tablet .. no way . Me is ...very sad

Sorry to hear that. If you have no adb and the nandroid app won't work then I think that is the end of the line I can't think of any other way to pull the firmware off a device and use it on another device. Time for a new tablet I think. Next time round go for one that has some developer support or at least one that you can find the firmware for.

with nandroid we copy the rom, he make an backup but after this ,it mush be flashed on tablet, but...how to flash if the tablet dont have option for flashing a FW ... and with the soft from service cant flash because dont reconize model type... so.... end of the line for my tablet i think. My last solution is to tell the service tehnician, to put a rom woth working camera and wifi at list... and after this to search for a patch for g sensor fix or to modify g sensor values from build-prop file ... that s the best solution i have in this moment (((((

[Q] Help with unrooting Lg-E739

Can anyone help me find a site with stock roms for lg e739 or the lg mytouch 4g? I need it to flash my phone back to stock. Any help would be greatly appreciatied.
Tsk Tsk Tsk, on you for not backing up your stock.
You could always try the LG Mobile Support Tool
www[DOT]lg[DOT]com/us/support/mobile-devices/phone-support
I havent tried to use this method yet so I'm not 100% sure it puts you back to stock, as it came out of box.
Download and install LG mobile support tool, run LG Mobile Update. Click on Customer Support in the menu, then click recovery. Remember to have your e739 connected via usb.
I did make a backup. It just won't restore. Even tried removing the Android secure file from my backup and got a md5 sum mismatch. Downloaded someone else's backup and it shut my phone off before the restore was complete just like my backup before I removed the Android secure file. Now I'm stuck wit cm7.2. Should I flash cwm before I restore like I did when I installed cm7 the first time?
Sent from my LG-E739 using xda premium
You got the md5 error because you removed something from the nandroid...thus changing the ckecksum.
I would say try flashing that nandroid that you downloaded. Makin sure its named correctly. Without removing any files from it.
Also try to redownload that stock nandroid backup n try again. Btw which one was it?
Did you wipe cache system and data partitions before flashing nandroid?
Do not wipe sd card.thats where nandroid would be.
On my e739 during flashing nandroids Ive had it get stuck at lg logo once or twice. All I did then was use adb reboot-restore...then tried reboot from cwm again...if that didnt work then do adb again to get to recovery and flash nandroid again...dont give up. If you want stock keep trying.
You could flash ur cm again to get working on ur phone again but thats not what you want is it?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
If you cant boot into an android you can use adb to push files to ur sd card...If you dont want to do that then ull have to flash cm n use file manager of choice.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
I would offer my e739 stock backup...but i got it from a third party..and it has extra bloat and carrier iq on it. so im keeping it in a safe place.

Id trade you LOL... mine wont root
Sent from my LG-E739 using xda premium
I don't know how to get adb to work. I downloaded the sdk and jdk but don't know how to set the path. I wiped data, cache, dalvik, and battery stats before I tried to restore. Still running cm7 but upgraded to the RC. It's quite smooth. Scared to try another restore since each time it stops I get a bootloop and have to hard reset to get back into recovery. And Odin doesn't support my lg. :-( any other suggestions?
Sent from my LG-E739 using xda premium
If you lived close enough I would willingly trade. No lol. Real talk! But have you tried unlock root? Our worked like a charm on my e739.
Sent from my LG-E739 using xda premium
To get adb working put phone in debugging mode
applications>development>tick debugging mode
Connect via usb..start>run>cmd type: cd c:\androidSDK\platform-tools
press enter
you can now type adb commands
type: adb devices hit enter that will show you connected devices
to get into recovery type: adb reboot recovery
device should now reboot into recovery
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
Well still not able to get adb for ask to work but on a brighter note, I finally got my phone to restore to stock. Wiped everything 3x's factory/data reset, cache, and dalvik. Then I formatted my system, hit restore, and voila! It went back. Back to cm7.2 RC since TMobile now wants to charge extra to tether. Even tried ICS or cm9 but think I'm gonna wait till there is a more stable version
Sent from my LG-E739 using xda premium
well have you tryed one of many of the apps on the market to unroot it, but i cant help you with the restoring your backup if you cant restore it from cwm without problems because i have a galaxy s gt i9000
I already know how to unroot was having a prob restoring tmobiles software but its all good now!

You cannot do that
You must be having a rooted tablet s if u want to do that
I had a rooted 3g tablet s but after I upgraaded to official us ics wifi I lost the root as well as 3g functionality
So even I m waiting for a exploit to return back to honeycomb
So in short u cant do anything now but wait for the dev team to bring an exploit for official ics
Hope this helps

But now the error is 'E: Prohibit update as a result of checking version or base sku'

If you flashed the untouched official ICS update, you will not be able to downgrade until you have root again. Unfortunately, there is no known root exploit for ICS on this tablet.

I am going to try work with a program my friend showed me called mercury downloadable from here (I would put the link here but it's not letting me just google mercury-v1.0 framework) from my understanding it's a bit like adb but for hacking
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium HD app
Ok today didn't go as planned I couldn't get mercury working the computer was not connecting to the device if someone else would like to try please post ur results here other wise,
I need idea's any idea's on how to get this to work crazy, silly, and brilliant idea's they r all welcome I have a silly one which I'll like to share and two questions as well.
Idea connect the flash memory of the device to a USB memory stick then access the memory of the device like it's a memory stick then u can easily access root files or install root but it's desperate and silly and because the way the memory is placed on the board of the device their is no where to connect it to the memory stick.
Question 1 the command adb reboot reboots the device right but adb shell "reboot" requires root so is it possible to use the same privileges that let u run adb reboot to do root things.
Question 2 the system wipe wipes the /data file right if u could change it to wipe the /system file then u remove the system removing the problem of trying to flash the older system than the one on the device but to contradict my own question the device does the wiping in recovery mode which we can not change atm :-(.

Idont know how to brick but if u tried take care of :
8. I've bricked my device! What can I do?
- As long as your 'region.zip' file is not damaged, then for 99% your tab can be fixed.
Firstable try to flash this 3.2.1r2 firmware.
In most cases it works. If it will fail then:
1. Boot into RECOVERY;
2. Try to flash the update again - it will fail - thats ok;
3. Wait for 2-3min to get adb available;
4. Use 'adb pull /tmp';
5. Post your recovery.log and region.prop files.

This sounds really stupid but it is like i say:
To brick your device, you must have a rooted tab

[Q] help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now (past boot)

(sorry to the other thread owner as I didn't realize I was in the i9300 forum when I posted my reply asking for similar help)
*** this is a repost from the post I made on androidcentral, with a suggestion made by dmmarck over there ***
Ok, yes it seems I made a mistake and I'm new to this, so apologies. But I tried going in and changing build.prop (specifically ro.camera.sound.forced=0 to get the camera to go quiet when the phone was set to silent) and when I rewrote the file into the system, I ended up with a phone that won't go past the 'Samsung Galaxy SIII' screen into the Sprint boot. I searched around and found that my SBF might be trashed, but at this point I'm unsure as to how to get it reloaded properly.
I am able to get into the recovery (up volume, home button, power button), and may have made a further mistake by formatting the /system. Unfortunately, I didn't make a backup using that utility until AFTER the build.prop problem, so even though I tried to recover using the recovery I made (after the problem), it is understandably not working.
Am I totally screwed or is there a way to get me back? Any help is greatly appreciated.
// dmmarck and paul627g over on androidcentral think if I can get a good samaritan to help me by posting a nandroid backup of their stock L710 setup, I should be able to recover without issues, would anyone here be able to help me?
Have you tried this?

Yes! Thank you for pointing me there, I found that a little bit ago and tried it a couple of times, unfortunately, the bootloader doesn't seem to be broken, so this didn't help me.
I really wish Samsung had the OEM ROM out!
Just found this!! Someone please tell me this will fix things?? And how do I use the file? (am downloading it now, slow download)

You won't be able to do anything with it if you're not a dev, calm down Roms will be available soon

hey now, I appreciate what it takes to get to a fix, but I am in a bit of a pickle with this being my only phone and I am new to Android, so what may be a fix is still an exciting bit of news.
I appreciate that this is not the same as an OEM ROM now (with help from here and from android central), so I'm learning. I also understand that this is a problem that I caused by not doing my basic backups as I would any other software work, so please don't misunderstand and think that I am not understanding of what the timeline realistically will be to get to a fix.
Can't you edit the prop build on your recovery and flash it back?

quite possibly, but the recovery was made from the messed up/non-working version, so I'm not sure if that works or not... any thoughts?
I have a solution for you. Ask someone who has a GS3 to make a nandroid, copy it to your sd card and flash it. Viola you should have everything back to normal.
*warning*
Some might deny your request because certain personal information being stored in a nandroid such as gmail accounts, contacts, passwords, ect.

Yes! Thanks! This is the route that we're moving forward on in the androidcentral forums. We're thinking a FACTORY RESET/CACHE/DALVIK WIPE usin CWM will help to remove personal info as best as possible for any kind soul who does this.
I'm pretty sure someone will help you. I would have if i had a gs3(waiting for local stores to get them). I hope everything go well for you.
Come to think of it, couldn't you just factory reset your phone and it will be stock again?

thanks! actually, I have no way to factory reset unfortunately...
By going into stock recovery mode you can factory reset it. It's the same steps to get into CWM.
And if all else fail, root your phone using the odin method by getting into download mode, you'll have CWM recovery and you can factory reset using that.

hmm, I think I'm missing something because I don't have the factory recovery now that CWM is installed (or am I incorrect here?). And I'm not sure if I can get back to the factory reset options now in the state that I'm in.
As far as the odin method, I am already rooted, I'm not sure how I can use CWM recovery to factory reset at that point..
Apologies again as I am new to android and trying to learn! I appreciate you're help!
Yes, you don't have stock recovery because you're rooted. And if you're able to get into CWM you should be able to get your phone back to normal.
In CWM there's a option to wipe data(factory reset), but wiping data to cure your problem is experimental meaning idk what might happen when/if you do.

Ok, just tried that (wipe data/factory reset), same behavior unfortunately...
How about unrooting ?
Using this method
http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/team-epics-un-root-from-recovery.html?m=1
then going to stock recovery.
Before doing any of this first try using the nandroid somebody might provide for you.

Before changing the rom i backed up the stock rom .The problem comes to whenever i boot to recovery and reach to a point where i am to select if i want to install zip file from sd cards and other selection, i am not able to install or access anything from sd card. Even when i tried to restore the backup using Rom Manager it fails me guys !
> I really want to restore the back up or install another very stable rom compatible with my HTC Wildfire
> When i hold vol- and power buttons and try to go to recovery, the phone hangs at the Revolutionary logo !
THE MIUI is slow and can't withstand stress as every time i try to do something fast it displays error messages. Pleasse help !!!
Hey yunus maybe u should download the stock rom for ur device from the net as the backup you created may have issues. Oh yeah u can flash the downloaded rom via odin.

I had this problem you mention with CWM in my N1: it couldn't access my sdcard. I finally had to flash a different recovery (Amon Ra in my case) which reads the sdcard with no problem at all.

ODIN is for Samsung phones. You need to run an official HTC RUU (ROM Update Utility) to restore HTC phones to stock.
@OP -
Download the RUU exe from the link below, connect your phone to computer via USB and run it as administrator. Your phone will be completely erased and restored to stock. I;m not sure if SD card will erased too, so make a backup of all its contents to be safe.
http://htcruu.com/securekey.php?fil...3.55.24H_3.35.19.25_release_151892_signed.exe
If you're from India, then run this instead -
http://htcruu.com/securekey.php?fil...45.55.24_3.35.15.31_release_142213_signed.exe
You can find a list of more RUUs for your phone, for other regions and carriers at http://htcruu.com/?dir=Buzz
You've certainly messed something up, and your SD card might be corrupted too, so if you're not very knowledgeable about what you're doing, you're better off restoring to stock and starting over rather than trying a bunch of different fixes and messing up your phone more.

[Q] Galaxy tab 10.1 complete restore after custom roms

Hi
I have a galaxy tab 10.1 GT-P7500. I have been messing around a lot with custom ROMs. Now I want to do a proper restore to official ICS. I have the Odin flashable package. When I restore it just using this, my tablet does not want to root again on this stock firmware. I looses root as soon as I flash the root package.
What I want to do is do a complete restore of the tablet. I don't really know much about the bootloaders and so on.
Should I get a PIT file and tick re-partition as well as update phone bootloader?
I have restored an old Nandroid backup and did a factory restore on the tablet but there is something wrong with it. Every now and then the tablet just do a random reboot, but not a complete reboot. The screen goes blank and then back on again. Signal gets lost and everything that I was busy with are gone. I use the Wi-Fi hotspot all the time and every time that this happens I have to turn it back on again.
Anyone who can tell me how to do a proper restore of everything on the tablet?
Boot into cwm or twrp recovery, do a full wipe, not including internal storage, then flash stock ICS again.

after the Odin to stock and flashing the root zip... did you try to update the binaries for the super user app you're using...?
Thanks. Will try that tomorow. Why should I not include internal memory?
After flashing stock ICS, the superuser apps did not work at all. It tried to update binary, but kept on giving errors.

Because your important files are there. Unless you don't care about those files or you've backed up in your computer, then you can wipe it. I've seen people wiping their internal memory blindly and then posting "Help, my photos/videos are gone!! Is there any way to recover it???" Which is why I said not to wipe your internal memory.
Regarding the superuser, what error did it give out?

I can't remeber the error that superuser give out.
I have flashed stock ICS now, but when I try to load the update file which I always used to root it, the stock recovery give an error saying unknown path for sdcard(photo included).
I have formatted all the partitions using CWM before reflashing.
This also happened before I started using my old backup again. Do you know why this will happen? Should I try to repartition the device or something?

After flashing stock ICS, you did make sure that it booted well and let it settle first right? You can't use stock recovery to flash things. Flash cwm recovery first then flash the update zip.

Yes, it booted and I logged into gmail and everything. I have loaded cwm and flashed the zip file. Then get the error "root possibly lost. Fix?" Does not matter if I choose yes or no. I don't have root access. Superuser say I must update binary and then when it try to get root access fails.

First, check to see if the su binary is in /system/xbin or not. Download terminal emulator, then type su and see if it works. If it says su not found, it means the su binary is not installed. If so, try flashing the SuperSU zip (https://db.tt/18JKy062) and see if it works.
Edit: OK never mind, I see you solved it.
