i9300 Screen flcikering and battery death - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
First of all im new here and a complete Android noob. I know some stuff, but kinda just the basics. So have mercy with me!
My S3 is now about 1 year old, maybe 2-3 months less. Everything worked fine, until I installed the stable release of CM 10.2 that recently came out. Now the display starts flickering, when I have about 25% battery left, after a few seconds the phone freezes completely. It remains in this state for several more seconds, until I shut it down or remove the battery. When I hang it on the cord to load it seems that the battery is deadly empty, after a minute or so it has enough juice to start up again. Strangely, now it tells you, that you have like 1-2% battery left. So now's my question how I fix that. I mean either CM has some heavy issues with finding out how much power i have left or the battery is slowly dying.
Warranty is no option ---> installed a custom rom.
I know that there are many threads about a screen flickering issue, but I don't think that these are adressing my problem.
I hope you guys can help me and a bih thanks beforehand for all those who try!

Do a full wipe and reflash, charge to 100% and test before you add any mods or apps. If still the same then go back to the latest stock rom and retest to check your hardware.
Having said all that, AOSP comes with some drawbacks that you must live with, but this sounds more like an issue with your particular set up.

i have exactly the same problem on Carbon Rom and Omni. On Sammy it didnt happen.

Refer here.

now the phone wont pass the boot animation, it boot loops. But i can enter recovery and download mode. I wiped and flashed again a rom. I think that the battery is fully damaged and not giving enough voltage so the phone can power on.
PS: a battery will arrive today so i can test the phone then.

on the left is the damaged battery
on the right is the new one
but thet dont look the same

It looks fake... Was that from the link I sent you?

Try to test NFC.
The original one will work with it since it has the NFC chip, but not the fake one (if it is fake).

[Q] Phone shutting down

My phone was working great for the past few weeks using custom ROMs (KA SSpeed) and DooMKernel.
But starting last week, the phone started shutting down itself. It just shuts down, but does not restart. I can power up the phone again without problems. But after using it for a while, it auto shuts down again. Sometimes it shuts down right before it gets to the lock screen when I power it up again.
Sometimes it will say "phone will shut down due to high temperature", but most of the time it would just say "shutting down".
When this happens, the phone is not hot and I do not play any games. The most I do is just short video clips.
Strangely, leaving the phone on the charger seems to be better.
Tried to clear data and do all wipes, reflash ROM, but the problem is still there.
Relocked the bootloader and used the Sony Update Service to restore to original condition but the problem is still there!
Anyone has the same problem? Maybe my CPU is fried?

Yes. I have overclocked it. But it was very stable. Normally if it pushed to too high frequencies the phone should freeze or reboot.

Try sticking to stock voltages for a while and see if the problem occurs.
Alternatively, you can also help to test the test versions he posted. Who knows, may be yours also one of the issue he is trying to hunt down .

Thanks. That is why I have tried relocking the boot loader and use the Sony Service update to reflash to original stock .73 firmware. But sadly, based on limited tests the problem is still there.

Well, just normal use. Internet browsing, YouTube viewing etc. Tried powering up just now after letting it stay off after 12 hrs and the phone auto shuts down right as it boots into the lock screen! This is with the stock firmware with no 3rd party apps installed.

Yes. I have another phone. I'll play with it a few more days before sending it in for warranty service. Thanks.
I think like gm007 said, it might be a hardware problem. I just find strange that it can die like this. Every flash was fine and I have never bricked it. It ran fine for 2-3 week on custom rom and kernels. There wasn't much indication that the CPU was overheating during that period.
The next thing I can think of is the temperature sensor. It seems that it is reporting a false temperature and triggering the shutdown. The sensor says the phone is hot when it really isn't. Do you guys think it can be recalibrated?
Finally decided to relock the bootloader and send it back for warranty service last week. Got a call saying that the battery connector has corroded! The stupid thing is they are now saying that they detected moisture in the unit and will not honour the warranty!!!
I know that I take good care of my phone and I have not spilled a single drop of water on it! The most is that I have used the phone after a jog and the screen was a little damp (I have a screen protector on too)
I now recall that there is a piece of white/pinkish area (recessed) behind the battery cover. Maybe that is the moisture detector strip? I know iPhones have it in the headphone jack.
Mine was pinkish before I sent it in. I have also heard that humidity may trigger the color change too.
Anyway, I asked to talk to the manager said he will bring it up to Sony as mine has the yellow tint issue and my phone is less than a month old.

Yes. They repaired it under warranty and it is working fine. I cannot recall what exactly they repaired though.

Hardware or software glitch?

My brother bought a second hand SGS2 (I9100), and it has some weird glitch affecting the battery reading.
Even though the phone is fully charged, when the phone goes to standby mode (sleep), after a few minutes, or seconds, it suddenly "thinks" that the battery is not charged, so it turns itself off. When you turn it back on, is says we need to charge it, but after 15 to 30 seconds, it reads the battery properly, and goes back to the right battery %. If the phone doesn't go to standby, then the battery glitch doesn't affect, it doesn't say it is not charged, and it can be used with no problems for hours.
I've reset it to factory reset, but it hasn't solve the bug. We have tried also changing for another battery (I have one as well), but is not that, the battery is perfect (both of them). We changed the ROM a couple times, also changed the Kernel and root it, but the issue does not go away.
Can anybody tell me with the info provided if it is a hardware issue (hope not) or if it can be on the software? I've searched the forums but didn't find others with the same issue.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give us to figure it out.

About 2 weeks ago, a guy reported a very similar (probably exact) problem.
After many troubleshooting, the problem was hardware related.

Dont wanna sound rude or anything, but s2 is still not a cheap phone (for most of people atleaset) , meaning,
when ur buying smartphone 2nd hand, the seller will have to agree on me turning on phone, playing with it for 20 mins, check everything and so on..
Display, RAM, everything, meet somewhere where is wireless so you can download android system tester off market etc etc
Because i am almost sure this is HW problem mate. I suggest you call him right away, and hope he still has the same number

Not rude at all! My brother review the phone, but didn't seem to have any issue at the beggining, started to fail like a week later.
We can return the phone at any time, is just that they don't have another one to give us right away, and most likely they'll take it for a review before we can get either a refund or another unit, so we wanted to explore all the options ourselves first.
I'm sure he'll be returning the phone soon as we pretty much ran out of options.

Thanks a lot Jokesy, you have been very helpful as I followed the thread and it is the exact same issue.
After a few days, the problem got even whorse as everytime is even harder to turn it on because it reads low battery. We can only turn it on, most of the time, through Recovery, as the key combination for Download Mode doesn't even respond. Sometimes doesn't respond at all. We just need to turn it on one more time to flash the stock ROM to return it.

[Q] Battery Issue (Fast drainage, phone overheating)

Hi there, and thanks for taking the time to view my thread.
Recently I've had a problem where my phone will get really hot around the camera area just from doing simple tasks like texting and then it will instantly shut off without warning. If I turn it back on, the battery indicator drops from 100% to around 5% and it will turn off again in about 10 seconds. I'm running the latest CM stable build and I've never had any issue with it before, this is just something that has started in the past couple of weeks.
I tried changing batteries as I thought that might be the issue, but when I place my other battery inside the phone to charge it the screen just keeps turning on and going to the grey battery and flicking off. Tried leaving it for a couple of hours like that but no luck. The battery that currently works feels like it's swollen slightly on one side (if that makes sense?) and so I don't really want to continue using it.
If I've been at all vague or you need any more information, tell me what and I'll try my best to get it
Thanks in advance,
Alex.
Your symptoms all point to a bad battery. If the battery swells then it is in a bad conditions. If you can spin thr battery on a flat table then it is not good.
A good battery has flat surface snd therefore u cannot spin it for more than half a round. But a swell battery in your case will spin for a few rounds.
Change a new battery to resolve your problem.
Best Regards

Hi, thanks for replying. I have tried to change my battery with an identical (but flat and brand new) one but as I mentioned in the original post the grey battery icon appears on my screen with the circle inside, and it will periodically flicker to a full green one but it won't turn on.

Do not use any battery that doesn't look normal or is damaged. Old or damaged battery's can even explode/burn sometimes. I have also been having this same issue but, I know my battery is fine because without a micro SD card the phone stays cool and the battery lasts forever but with a micro SD card the battery drops rapidly in charge just like you get from 100% to 5% in a short time period and also gets very hot around the camera area. So if you have a micro SD card in it take it out, at least it works for me:victory:. I've read that this is because the phone is constantly scanning the card (some glitch or bad connection) but i'm not sure. Tell me if this works and give me a "Thanks" if it does!
Can you try with a different kernel and see what happens?

Install Better Battery Stats and look at the process(es) that are not working properly and are overheating the phone, then try uninstalling and reinstalling the app if it's not a system app, or just flash your rom again to overwrite possibly corrupted system files.

no need of returning phone...i guess its one of many issues discussed over this forum..
1. It can happen because of a Kernel that u have installed that is not going with ur ROM.
2. It could be due to some app that is sucking up your battery and intun causing heating in ur processor..i mean some game..weather widget..Etc..
I would suggest that u can browse thru this forum for the solutions that fit u best..
i think its a kernel or App problem 4 sure..:fingers-crossed:

Hope it helps u in some way.

[HELP]Battery problem Motorola XT912

Hi guys, I have a very big problem regarding to the battery. Sometimes it doesn't charge or maybe it's full charged but It drops from 100%, 50%, 20%, 5% and then die (in a few minutes). Somedays it works well but the average is not good. I tried several roms , full wipes and I changed the battery. I don't know what to do. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
what firmware? that did before the problems started?
I believe your battery is damaged. Possibly from high temperatures. I recommend getting a replacement phone if you still qualify for the manufacturer's one year warranty.
thanks

I already changed it so I think is not a battery issue. I'm trying to avoid send it back because I'm from Argentina and I bought it in China.
Another issue is when you connect it all the night but it doesnt charge. At the first I thought it was a software issue but right now I don't know what to test. I think the most weird is when sometimes works just fine. It's making me crazy...I dont know if send it back or set it on fire lol.
Thanks guys.

I think you should flash the stock. before flashing do wipe. in order to avoid the problem of software.

I did it several times. I don't know what is happening but since two days is working "fine". The last thing I tried It was die-hard battery script. A guy in another forum recommended me to use compressed air to clean out the ports because it may have a piece of debris that is causing a direct short therefore killing your battery.
Thanks guys.

Maybe stuck power button........flick the back of your phone a couple times.
I know button seems to be fine, but that doesn't mean anything. Flick away, see what happens

Ok tried flicking it to no avail. Any other ideas could this be a software bug or is it most definitely hardware? I'm thinking its software but obviously can't be sure
OK now I've got some more info on the issue. it wont reboot while charging and turned on, but it will if its charging and turned off. the only thing i haven't tried is a new battery is it worth me doing that? any other ideas or thoughts at all?
If your battery is close to 1yr old then yes! Try a new battery. They are really cheap online and its nice to have a spare charged battery ready for our resource hogs.

Where's the best place to get a cheaper battery? I looked on ebay and they have some but i dont know if i trust i did search oem, but at the smae time dont wanna pay 30$ for one from at&t
Ebay is cheap! But yes some vendors aren't very trustworthy, or prompt. I stick to a close vendor when on eBay.
There's always Amazon. Very reasonable. Lots of users on here like the anker 2700ma battery and swear by it. The stock battery is 2500ma.

OK just for an update i have done absolutely everything i can software wise tried all 3 version of stock (GB, ICS, AND JB) the problem still continues so now I go to hardware. I'm gonna try a battery, and look under the hood at the power button and the rest of the main board. And if the battery doesn't work, then I'm thinking I will try to switch out main board. I really think this is a software issue as it does it when the phone sleeps no matter how it does it but all I can do is tinker and find out lol. I'll keep updating for everyone who has this problem. I appreciate all the help
OK another update i got it opened and played with the power switch it seems to be just fine but i blew it out with air just to be safe problem still continues i should also mention that i broke the sim slot right when i got the phone and i noticed the rebooting the next day but i doubt they are connected so im gonna fix sim slot, then go from there i have a standard battery and an extended battery problem continues with both of them so im going straight to motherboard as i think thats the issue anyway. Ill keep this thread updated
