Hi there!
I've found several threads with this issue, but still not that serious like mine.
I've been using my GS II for 3 month without any problem, untill yesterday. During surfing on the net the network suddenly gone away and since I don't have mobile network connection. I've got IMEI, CSC, signal from provider (unlocked phone), my SIM card works in other devices, I also updated the firmware, I made several hard resets, checked other SIM cards, checked the problem with flight mode, but I haven't found any solutions. The signal sign is there in the upper corner, but I'm not able to connect to any providers for 48 hours.
Please help me. I don't know what to do
Maybe a country specific CSC change? I don't know how to do that. I have one .tar file for that but Odin can't install it. I'm a beginner here...
Thanks in advance...
Have you tried checking the access point settings?
Sent from my GT-I9100
Yes. They are fine. I've just changed them and put them to default again because there was no change.
When the phone went offline I was just surfing on the net so I did not change any options.
Any other ideas maybe?
Thanks...
try talking to your provider. Your account may have a problem which could be fixed by a simple reset on their end.
Thanks for the comment. Well, I've tried to use other sims for the same and also from other providers, even a sim from another country, and none of them worked. I also tried to put my sim into another phone and the sim works fine there. The only logical solution is that the problem is with the phone.
I guess it's worth a try, maybe they blocked the IMEI of the phone because of something? It's not a stolen mobile though.
Now I've got a flashed brand new mp4 player from samsung. Nice, it drives me crayz...
Another idea. While I was surfing on the net I installed "advanced task killer" (before the "crash" happened) and I killed some ordinary apps (not sure about this) then I just deleted the program. This connection rejecting thing happened after this. That's why I thought I should make a firmware update, maybe the problem was caused by this task killer. Well, don't know if the is a connection or not...
I have exactly the same proble with my Galaxy SII - I went on a long trip - when I got back it stopped working. Has anyone found a solution to this?
To reiterate - the phone sees all the networks, but when I select Vodafone UK I get the message "unable to select vodafone UK automatically". The sim card works fine in other phones - there is clearly an issue with the phone. The only thing that has changed is I have updated some of my apps on returning home.
Any ideas?

My CSC is XEU (correct for UK as far as I can see - and has worked for the past 3 months)
Sim card works fine in another phone
Network is fine (my wife is also on Vodafone and has no issues - my sim works on the network on her phone)
My Imei is correct
-Everyone else who has had this problem had no joy with a factory reset so I'm loathe to try it until I''ve tried everything else.
Any other ideas?
Just to recap:
The phone is stuck in emergency calls only mode
I can see all my local networks (Vodaphone, Orange etc...)
When I try to connect (in any of the modes 2g/3g) I get the error message
The sim card works fine in other phones
Other people's sim cards have the same issue in my phone
There are plenty of 'Emergency calls only' threads around, but the ones that have my exact symptoms never seem to get solved. Does anyone have any other ideas, or better, has anyone come across a thread where the issue was resolved? Getting pretty desperate.
tried rooting and flashing different modems maybe its a hardware problem with the modem.

i have the same problem in greece galaxy s2 i9100....in ics i havent network in 2.3.5 i have...i dont know why...in cm9 ics i have network...
Last update - I have flashed the phone to Ice Cream Sandwich, (LPQ version), which means I have:
Carried out a factory reset
Flashed a new ROM and Modem
When I rebooted it asked me for my carrier (Vodafone UK) and filled in the APN settings itself. I still have the same issue. I can't work out what is left that I haven't reset/reloaded that could still be causing issue. There can't be many settings left that aren't new?

i try to put manual apns but i cant save this in phone...in network search found my carrier but not conected...only with cm9 ics found network...pff...
Success?!?! It looks like we have tracked down the problem (extremely helpful input from another forum). Quick call to Vodafone and it turns out that my IMEI has been blacklisted (stolen!) Imagine my surprise - currently having a very interesting with Carphonewarehouse as to how hey managed to give me a stolen phone - should hopefully have everything resolved shortly

Very odd - when you first boot after a flash does it not ask you to select your contract type (that is the bit that automatically fills in the APN for me?)
my solution

this helped to me
Had the EXACT same issue on my Galaxy Note II for two days. My last hope was trying to restore my EFS with the EFS pro app.
Now when enabled my wifi at home and connected to my home network my sim prompted for the pin code.
Strange but I guess it was waiting for a connection (from my home wifi (not any other wifi) from a "half downloaded" app from the play store.
Anyways I'm happy this issue is resolved.
Does your phone prompt for a pincode when you start it? (mine said unable to complete download everytime it booted)
Hope this will help you guys...
Samsung Galaxy "Unable to connect. Try later" issue still remain
Hi guys,
I have the same issue with the following device:
Samsung Galaxy S3
I live in continental western Europe. Operators tried: BASE, MOBISTAR, PROXIMUS, POST.
The IMEI is correct, does not start with 00. The phone was bought from a shop, new, I have the invoice, so is legal, not stolen.
For some unknown reason, suddenly it does not want to connect to the mobile operators, any of them. I see "Emergency calls only". When I try to connect any one automatically or manually, I always get the message "Unable to connect. Try later".
The SIM card work well in another device, a Nokia C3-00. Another SIM does not work in my defective Samung S3. I sent back the device to the shop to be repaired and they gave it back to me saying it work very well, they just upgraded to the latest firmware, etc.
I am very annoyed because the device is unreliable. I have it in my pocket and do not realize it is not connected to the mobile network, I cannot be called or receive messages. Also I am unable to call.
The WIFI work well.
I tried everything, removing the SIM, inserting another, shutting down, enabling and disabling flight mode, nothing works.
But the later for some unkown reason and logic, it just work again for some time.
You guys wrote about some solution by looking in a folder, but I don't see that folder. Also you mention rooting. Does this mean cracking the phone? I do not wish to meddle with this, because I could destroy my device and I paid a lot for it. It will remove the warranty. So if you have a solution, please give a legal one.
Anyone have a hint or explanation for this strange behaviour?
Thanks a lot.
had a similar problem with galaxy core prime.
bought without a sim card and no knowledge of what network it was on.
every sim i tried was getting unable to connect error as i was trying to register on network
dont know if this will work for everyone as mine is a dual sim phone but here goes.
inserted two different sims from different providers, ee and vodafone.
reset phone to factory settings and when it booted back up, it recognised the ee sim card, went to mobile networks and network operators in settings and selected the ee network and presto, it registered ! used sim manager to select voda card and repeated selecting vodafone as carrier and it also registered straightaway
as i said none of the cards would register before on their own, but somehow this method worked for me.
hope this helps
had to set one sim to gsm only and other to autoconnect
Hi,
I have a moto e 2nd gen 3g(otus) running CM14.1 Nightly. I put a jio sim in my phone. I tried connecting to it. It did not connect. I had done this because my friend found some trick(I knew it won't work but did it for his satisfaction). It did not connect as expected, but now when I put my primary sim in the sim slot, it also doesn't connect. When I go to settings cellular network and network operators it scans and displays an error - "error while searching for operator". When I choose auto connect it says registered but again I cannot access to it. The sim works fine in the 2nd sim slot. It recognises that a sim is present but doesn't catch signals. 2nd one when there is no sim. Rest all sim is in slot 1. Does this mean my sim 1 slot is spoilt??
From the attached screenshot, good news is that I am afraid, sim card is not being registered or recognized - this is a dual sim variant (mine is XT1521 dual sims and SIL has XT1527 with 1 slot only), correct ? Put that into another smartphone, does it read & register as normal ? Is this an OEM micro sim card or did you use a cutter to trim this, as I had issues with those myself in the early days and only stick to / use micro-sized sim card. Do not use nano Sim with the adapter as it will JAM & damage the sim slots when you attempt to pull it out (and, not worth repairing unless DIY) and standard/regular full-sized sim card cut down also known to cause problems in being recognized if not aligned & seated correctly.

This is XT1506 Indian edition. The sim works fine in the 2nd sim slot.
Does that "sim" card work in a different smartphone ? If it does, the Sim card itself is fine and okay - otherwise, need a new Sim card. Put another activated micro-Sim card (new/different) known to work in other devices - into slot 1 and reboot, see what happen then. If it still does NOT recognize or read the Sim card, then the hardware/slot itself has likely failed, somehow damaged while Sim cards were being inserted and/or taken out - those contacts are very delicate.
Use slot 2 instead unless you are using both slots for dual sim function - the OEM sim slot replacement parts can be found on eBay, not expensive but someone good with a solder iron & skilled in these repairs will need to do it. Depending on labor charges & parts - might NOT be worth the effort.
Last but not least, did you check the APN settings for your Sim card/provider - make sure those are correct. Good luck !

The sim works fine in slot 2. So do I need to check it with another sim? And this happened after a 4g sim in this 3g phone(explained why I did it above). Before that the slot was working fine. When the sim was inserted, it was recognised but didn't catch signal as expected ( I tried to connect it to it's network via settings and after that it wasn't recognised). So i left the phone and went out. Then when i came back i saw that it wasn't recognised. So i put back my main sim and still things didn't change. So maybe the insertion/removal may not be d reason.
Anyways thanks for providing help!
Anybody having any clue how I can fix this?
@Letitride Today I put a sim in slot 1 and dialled 112(emergency number, for testing) and it registered on some network and I was able to call(though I immediately cut it). I removed both my sims and tried calling 112 again, but it didn't dial as expected. So could this problem be related to something being wrong with my radio?
Thanks in advance!

If you don't mind answering, maybe someone else reading can help - who is the "home" carrier for this sim card, whether it's in slot 1 or slot 2 ... dialing 112 suggesting that you aren't in the U.S. but rather Asia - India ?? I have no trouble using T-Mobile USA micro-sim (home carrier in the US) or CMCC (Hong Kong, my global/traveling carrier for voice/sms ... roam on T-Mo USA, but will do AT&T roaming in the US on a different smartphone)
It sounds like your Sim is recognized & registering on a mobile network BUT whether your call can be successfully made & connected - isn't clear as you hanged up or dropped the call, correct ?? Can you do VoIP calling with the Moto E, like Facebook audio, Skype or Hangouts audio calling or similar - as not all countries are supported by these Apps ??
Do you know (call & ask the carrier's 611/customer care) what bands or frequencies are supported and used for your Sim ?
Install one or both free App from Google Play Store - SignalCheck and Signal Spy to see whether it's connected to HSPA and the CIS info (carrier info) ?
Is the sim card slot damaged somehow ? Did you used any sim card adapter as the owner's manual warned against it as the sim slot/holder with the pins are easily damaged & would need to be replaced, can't be repaired.
My gut feeling, your "radio" receiver is just fine, it doesn't fail or break on its own - the sim slot(s) might've been damaged or broken, especially if you or someone used a cutter to trim a regular, full-size sim card down to micro-sim ?

Thanks for replying.
My home carrier is Airtel.
It doesn't work in sim slot 1. It works on another device and sim slot 2 so there's nothing wrong with SIM card.
Yes, I am based in India.
If I manually try to select a network in slot 1 it gives a error stating no network found. If I select, choose automatically, it says it is registered on network, but I cannot make calls nor send/ receive SMS/MMS.
Yes, I can make VoIP calls via hangouts, WhatsApp etc.
I installed both SignalCheck and signal spy and found something weird. SignalCheck says that the sim is connected to CDMA. Signal Spy says unknown network. I'm not sure why it is connecting to CDMA since the sim is GSM. So maybe I feel it is due to this that I'm facing the problem.
I don't think the sim slot is damaged and I used a micro SIM (I didn't cut it or trim it or use an adaptor).
Thanks once again and I hope this helps!

Can you borrow another AIrtel micro-sim, known to be working from someone, family, friend or neighbor - or ask Airtel to replace your sim card with a new IMEI, it's cheaper/free instead of trying to replace the sim card slot (parts & labor might not make this a worthwhile effort) ?
I look up India and the country does NOT use CDMA network nor does the Moto E 2015 (dual sim, global or US/America single sim version) has CDMA hardware or radio receiver. Strange for sure ... perhaps it's the sim card gone bad ? If it works in slot 2, you should do a call to verify it's actually connecting to the cellular network instead of hanging up.
Go to Settings, under Sim cards - with your micro-sim card(s) installed, check & read those settings ... do you see your carrier "AirTel" displayed and your assigned mobile number ?? Anything turned off or hidden ? Is data roaming off or on ? What is the Preferred network type - try to set it to 3G or even 2G only, any difference ... might have to turn ON & then OFF Airplane mode to "cycle" the radio receiver; and, is Enhanced 4G LTE Mode ON or off ??
Next, this is important - what is the APNs set to by default (and, correctly - if not, try to change it manually) ?? Network operators - is it set to choose automatically (I have about 20 APN's loaded but can choose from 2, T-Mobile and AT&T)
Also, are you running stock OEM/factory Rom or custom Rom, bootloader unlocked & rooted vs. pure stock ?? Some of the ported custom Rom has issues with WiFi but in your case, irrelevant. Sometimes, your home carrier (AirTel) can push out the proper APN settings OTA to your smartphone - see if they can do that? I am running customized Remix rom, Nougat 7.1.1 and it is smooth & great.
If you have no luck whatsoever - please upload screenshot of your Signal Check and Signal Spy - to have a look at what the scren is saying about your connection.

I'm able to make calls through sim slot 2 (in fact that's how I'm using the phone as a daily driver).
I'm on otus so it's only 3g.
Changing preferred network doesn't help.
I'm rooted and running AOSPExtended v4.0 based on Android 7.1.1.
In India, as far as I know the telecom operators do not push out APN's through OTA updates.
Here are the screenshots.(1st and 2nd with sim in slot 2 and 3rd and 4th with sim in slot 1).

I don't use data in this phone. It is mostly connected to the Wi-Fi. But here a are the screenshots after I enabled data.
I checked the slot 1's APN settings but they seem to be fine.
Hope that these help.(1st &3rd in slot 2)
Thanks for helping!!
I don't know whether this will help but when I insert the sim in slot 1, I get options to choose my language and I get an option to subscribe to value added services via the sim toolkit.
I don't know what else to tell you in troubleshooting, let's review:
Sim card @airtel works in slot 2 but not slot 1 - does it work on another smartphone ?? please check & re-verify those APN settings on the other smartphone as well as Moto E
Sim card @otus works in slot 2 now and also in slot 1 ?? - why not use @otus in slot 1 and switch @airtel to slot 2, then APN is recognized and work (mobile data switched off as you don't have data , or leave it at 2G only - if that works (might restart the phone so that it can "register" OTA on the cellular tower/network). If that works, try 3G mode (and repeat by power off & register, etc.)
There's no advantage whatsoever using 4G/LTE mode in your custom Rom's firmware when you are not "registered" and activated with @airtel. Leave it on 2G could possibly "jolt" or re-awaken the sim card in "connecting" to the cellular tower/network.
If both slots are working, then it is either not seeing the @airtel sim card for whatever reasons - could be a bad physical contact, could be a corrupt APN (delete & restart device, many times - it will reset or manually "type" in the settings) Check with @airtel if you aren't sure. Also, did you reboot your WiFi router/signal to reset the data connection ?
Could the issues be in your Rom/custom firmware - backup your data & settings, try another firmware - I am running the latest Remix firmware here (been since January) it's 7.1.1 and great, no issues with dual sims - give it a try - link https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo.../rom-resurrection-remix5-5-1-t3160059/page138
If you can play with the language & extra settings via the simtool kits, why not try - you have nothing to lose.
Look under your Sim 1 mobile network settings:
Data roaming - mine is OFF
Preferred network type - mine is 3G (or 2G)
Enhanced 4G LTE - mine is OFF
APN - mine is on T-Mobile ( yours ??)
Network operators - should be automatic, set to search again (my Sim is recognized on AT&T and T-Mobile, default to T-Mobile as it is the home carrier)
There is also a Network settings reset (under Settings ... More, Wireless & networks) try that ?

Wait.......I think there's a huge gap between what we r talking. Airtel is my carrier. Otus is the codename of the device of the 3g version of the Moto e 2nd. I think u misunderstood what I wrote.
This is the summary.
My sim slot 1 suddenly stopped working. If I put a sim, I cannot connect to any network but can call the emergency number.
The sim works fine in slot 2 and other phones.
This was a micro SIM. (Didn't trim or use any adapter)
Apns are fine.
Tried changing firmware but no luck.
This is a 3g only phone so there's no option for enabling/disabling enhanced 4g.
All the above screenshots are of the same Airtel sim being put one by one in slot 1 and 2.
Hope this clears anymore misunderstandings.
Thanks!
OK - I see, my Moto E (XT-1521) is the dual-sim "surnia" variants - and support 4G/HRPA+/LTE, etc.
Did this @airtel micro-Sim ever worked on the Moto E ?? It works on another device ? Why not get a replacement micro-Sim from airtel to find out ?? Or try a different carrier micro-Sim known to be working ? If you are NOT using both sim slots, then - just use slot 2 plus WiFi ?
Or, you will need to get the defective sim slot serviced while under warranty or replaced, out of pocket, at your own expenses at a repair shop (if it's reasonable - these slot readers are apparently easily / prone to damage, thus ... plenty of inexpensive parts on eBay, and, a good soldering iron with skills. Bring it to an authorized Motorola service center if you are near one to see what they say.
If it's not worth the time, money & expensives - and, you need dual sims to work - shop for a new replacement phone that's network compatible.
Sorry, I don't know what else I can tell you on what to do and if anyone else can help without a physical inspection & running thru all the settings, etc. to diagnose the issue - as it is not software or app related, correct ??

Thanks for helping.
Yes, I'm using this sim from the time I've bought this phone( more than a year back).
This isn't an app related issue too.
It's fine as I understand it's difficult to find issues without diagnosing a phone completely but I thank you to help how much ever u could.
And do u also have any idea on how to fix a hardbricked nexus 7 2012 edition?
What's left to do is to go to @airtel and see if they can check the micro-sim card for you or replace it with a new one, free or at minimal charge as a customer in good standing. And/or to a local Motorola authorized service center or trusted repair shops to see what they can do. Or, go back & flash stock ROM again to see that will fix it.
As for N7, did you follow the guides & tips - not sure how you hard-bricked by messing around with it. Pose your details & questions at the N7 forum for help. I just upgraded mine from PureNexus 6.x to Beanstalk 7.1.1 and with a newly replaced OEM battery, it's almost like a new tablet @ 4.5 years old.
I couldn't see any posts about this for over 20 pages, I apologize if this is a known solution.
I just fixed, and bypassed FRP on an Honor 5X at work and I started using it all day with my AT&T SIM card. When I got home, it says "network unavailable" where the carrier name should be on the top left and it leaves me with absolutely no connection to the network. It does, oddly enough, register the phone number so the SIM card is being read. I tried the APN settings and nothing.
I have not rooted it yet, there's no TWRP files, just a stock phone. And yes, the SIM card does work in the Galaxy S5 Active it's in right now. Any idea how to fix this?
It isnt working in those two phones if am not wrong !!
Have my S9+ from Philippine Globe carrier.
I moved to Singapore and inserted new carrier sim Starhub, call and text is working. Unfortunately mobile data not working. Tried to add/edit APN and seems can not modify due to this message:
"Unable to view the access point name settings.
Access is restricted for the current user profile"
Seems like you need to talk to Starhub.
APN MISSING Spectrum mobile
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Android 10. Not Rooted
I used the protection insurance through spectrum and got a replacement device. There are no APN settings on the device. APN setting modifications are disabled through the Mobile networks UI. I can't reset to default or add an APN manually.
I have spent 4 hours on the phone with various departments with spectrum and no one knows what to do.
New SIM card was activated. Factory reset tried and failed. APN settings were supposedly pushed by the carrier and no change.
Anyone have any advice to either trigger the phone to obtain the APN or how to manually enter them?
**Side note** I have two S9+. One purchased new from spectrum and one the insurance company sent to replace a damaged phone, also from Spectrum.

Or, is the problem with my LTE hardware? How can I test or run a diagnostic to test the antenna?

So the carrier is sending me a new SIM card, which basically tells me they have no idea what the problem is because I already tried using a new SIM card and that didn't work the first time.
So I keep trying to find how to verify if there problem is a hardware problem, a firmware problem, or something else. Any advice, suggestions, or troubleshooting steps are greatly appreciated.

Update: I received another replacement from Assurant and the new device has the same issue!! Are the devices from Assurant not being flashed with the correct configuration for my carrier since then problem follows Assurant and not the device? I have a ticket open with Spectrum but no resolution to this point. Should I root my other S9+, pull the recovery file from it, root the replacement device and flash the files to the replacement device so it gets the correct carrier configuration, then unroot it?

No change at all. I've even flashed in the latest UK firmware (of the BC52 family, as I remember) which some claim also has VoWifi enabled for. I haven't had any joy at all. I'll change it back to the original HK firmware this weekend.
I must mention, though, that the first time I flashed the SEA ROM and went into the part of the menu where WoWifi would configured, it froze with a blank screen for several seconds before taking me back to the home screen. When I went ito the menu again, it was just like I was using the original software, with no menu for VoWifi; and has been like that with subsequent firmware versions I have flash3d since. I don't know if that means anything, I am just making it known.
I must admit, though, that I have not flashed the SEA ROM by clearing the phone completely (I have been preserving userdata). Reason for this is I have media and games taking the lion's share of the 512 gigs of this thing's memory; and having to reinstate all that is not quite my idea of fun. But do you suppose that it would make a difference?

I've a SIM card issue too. This one is tied specifically to the SIM issues by Vodafone Irl.
Android 12 pre January Google Security update it works fine. Factory reset / Full Wipe / Sony Software repair / Newsflash with different regions, all result in the same issue. Immediately after factory reset it works, but a security update is pending install, requiring reboot. After reboot phone is unable to maintain SIM card, SIM menu in settings keeps disappearing, phone UI, Settings UI crashes. Only way to fix is to remove the SiM card.
2 SIMs from Vodafone Irl tried and one brand new from the Vodafone store. All fail. They all work perfectly fine in my previous OnePlus 8/6 phone.
Using a Three Irl SIM works perfectly, using a Vodafone UK SIM , roaming on the Vodafone Irl network also works.
I am at a complete loss as to what to try next.
I'm dealing with Customer Service with the past 2 weeks and as of now, no service engineer has responded.

This is "similar" to the isse i've had on my old Iphone 4S with Wind IT SIM. There was something incompatible with wind sim cards with that iphone model. Appll swapped 3 times the phone but never solved the issue. Wind also done nothing. The issue was solved some years after but i already sold the phone at that time
Yeah, I can't see the issue being fixed.
Funny that the issue happed after the security update.
I don't want to have to switch networks but it looks like I might have no choice. I'll hold out I'll either Sony get back to me or a new security update lands on new FW.
I've not seen anyone else with the same issue, but there's no provider here selling the Xperia 1.3
Either way, it's a pain in the ass...
I tried changing the enabled radio modes in an Engineering menu and saw exactly this. If it's not a mode in the GUI everything crashes. I fixed it with a network reset. In your case, experimenting with the Engineering menu might be the only way to fix it. If you reset it and the SIM requests an unsupported mode you'll be back to crashing.

Sounds like your device has a problem. I haven't had any issues (besides the absence of VoLTE/VoWifi) with all firmware versions I have tried out so far. What happens when you do a clean install with the original firmware?

Same issue. Everything works perfectly until the first reboot when the new security patch gets installed.
That's the problem.
If it's hardware surely the fault would occur before the security patch is applied not after.

How do you get to this engineering menu?

Go into the Dialler and type the following to go to the menu you want.
Service Menu *#*#73788423#*#*
FCM Diagnostics *#*#426#*#*
IMEI Info *#06#
Testing *#*#4636#*#*
The One in the image is the Testing menu, Phone info, 3 Dot Menu top right (scroll down then up to make it appear), Select Radio Band
PROCEED WITH CAUTION! I'm guessing you could possibly FUBAR here.
I had the problem after touching this menu:
*#*#4636#*#
-> Phone information
--> Set Preferred Network Type:
---> NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA
Everything SIM related crashed with a different value. I have a XQ-BC62 so I'm not sure my setting is the same as other phones.
A network reset will fix any damage done here, assuming your SIM card doesn't break it again. It will cost you all BT pairing, WiFi passwords, and APNs.

I had performed a Network Settings reset, same issue. I had and currently have the same settings as above.
What it reminds me of, is having an old SIM Card and putting it in a new phone, similar to when they changed the voltage capabilities of the SIM cards years ago. Back when we were trimming SIM cards with scissors to fit
So I received a Play store System update today, again still showing February 1St 2022.
Still having the same issue...
Google Video
I had a response from Sony UK, but nothing other than try switching off 4G and 5G ! I can't even get to that menu!
Just received FW update 61.1.A.4.78 this morning. Unfortunately no change to my Vodafone issue.
As of today, still no response from Sony.
I've determined that the SIM profile must be stored on the Phone. Factory resetting the phone whilst roaming and changing a setting in the *#*#4636#*#* menu appears to cause it. The roaming was the thing that killed it. However it still doesn't explain why no Vodafone IRL SIM card worked.
I have managed to repeat a similar issue where the SIM menu crashes each time it is accessed , again after messing with the *#*#4636#*#* menu. and /or hot swapping SIM cards causes the problem. Use a different SIM card in the device and it works , use the original SIM card in a different device and it works. I believe there is a SIM profile stored on the device that is getting corrupted. The only resolve is a factory reset. Or a new SIM card (waiting to confirm this, new card on the way...can't face another factory reset!)
