I bought a used white S3 I9300 a few days ago and I have some questions about it.
First, the battery. It lasts about a day with regular use and I get about 3.5 hrs of screen time (using internet with 3g mostly, sometimes wifi. Using camera, a few different apps, UI browsing and a few other things. Brightness 60-100, power saving on about 50% of time). Is this good battery life or should I invest in a new battery?
Second, when I have the phone charging and I use it at the same time, it drains the battery slowly. Can't complain about charging time though, from 5-15% to 100% it takes about 3-4 hrs.
Third,can someone reccomend a good rom for it? Something that has good performance, features and battery life?

If your Phone is already on Sammy 4.3 I would recommend you to switch to any AOSP Rom.
Temasek´s CM11 or PAC-Rom are pretty well featured.

Battery Life completly depends on your usage ..........But the kind of Stats that u have specified it looks pretty much normal so you dont need to buy a new battery
Charging time that you have specified is a bit of my concern as using the official charger battery shoudnt drain while charging and using the phone(Unless ur playing heavy games simulaneously). Check if you have recieved an official charger.
Official S3 charger will charge your phone is Approx 3 hrs from 0(Obviously while ur not using it at d same tym). There are other 2A chargers available which will charge it much faster if you need (Read Pros n Cons)
ROMS ......well i Archidroid and REvolutionary S5 are the best Sammy Roms out there(personal opinion)

My phone came with original charger and cable. I am running stock 4.1.2.
I figured out the charging issue. I noticed that if I plugged in the charger it was showing charging AC with 1000mA. Once I moved the usb cable even slightly, it switched to usb charging and 400mA. Turns out there was a big piece of dirt stuck in the usb port. I pulled it out with a pair of tweezers and its all good now.

Can you do this on the stock firmware?
Do you have to root the device and change the ROM or just the Kernel?
I read somewhere you can tweak the device so that it charges at 1000 instead of 650ma, is this true ?

Blimey I am surprised more people don't find the slow charging the biggest problem, I can cope with the phone draining the battery fast, this I can control by turning certain things off, but the extremely slow recharge is a killer.
I would prefer to be able to charge my battery in half the time and for the battery to only last half a year than to have to endure the terribly slow charging to have a battery last a year, at it would be nice to have the option, sometimes you simply just need to quickly charge your phone, other times like overnight, it can take as long as it likes
Your thread link above seems to suggest that even using a more powerful charger than stock will not increase charge time
You would need to flash a custom kernel with the maximum mA draw increased, ninphetamine kernel from my sig is one such kernel.
Just don't charge from USB. It's so much faster from the socket

I am using the Mains charger that came with the device, not USB, its way to slow
i am havin HTC AMAZE 4G
when i used to charge it before
phone used to come to 90% from a full in approximately 1 hour.
now it comes very quickly like 10-15 minutes
& also the major problem is my phone gets switched off at any battery percentage like 65% & when it gets restarted it comes to around 8% or sometimes even 4%.
if i pull out battery again restart the phone then sometimes it comes to around 30% back or any random increase in battery or sometimes even decreases to 4% & then the battery gets drained in 5 minutes & i have charge it again
battery takes more time to even charge
sometimes using DATA & charging it even takes 10 hours to charge
i dont know what is the problem
i have been thinking about battery problems
but i googled & in some blogs it shows as circuit problems too
the problem is i am living in INDIA
this phone is not official here so the service center guy wont touch it & i dont want to waste money on the battery if it isnt the problem

How old is your handset? Battery life decline is normal as it ages. Without being able to inspect and test yours out all I can tell you is the most likely explanation for what you're describing is battery wear.
The original HTC battery that came with my phone only holds 2/3 of the charge it once had when new, which is why I invested in a pair of Anker batteries and an external charging station (I purchased them together in a package on eBay for under $30 US shipped). Having the extra batteries has been an excellent addition. I alternate them every few days to more evenly balance how they are wearing and to prolong the remaining life of my original battery. Plus it's great to have an extra battery to use for those times when I really need my device, but don't have the ability to plug in.

It showed 56% in my fathers phone
Wen i switched the battery &; started my phone it showed 15% at start
So what could be the problem then?

You're getting the different results because the batteries aren't calibrated to each phone. If you put your fully charged battery in your father's phone it shows 56%, correct? What happens when you put your father's fully charged battery in your phone? Keep in mind that when switching around the batteries neither with be calibrated to the device, but will instead show a percentage vs the battery that was properly calibrated.
Example: the battery in my phone shows as fully charged, but is worn and no longer charges to the maximum. If I place it in my brother's Evo 3D which uses the same size battery but is newer. It will show as only partially charged because his device is calibrated to his newer stronger battery. Conversely, if I put his newer battery in my phone which has been calibrated to my older worn battery it will appear to be fully or nearly fully charged for a long time before it begins to show it's draining with use.
The only way to properly test your battery would be to either try a known stronger one in yours for several charge - discharge cycles as your phone calibrates to it, or to try your battery in another device for several such cycles. Then you need to compare if there was an improvement in up-time or not. Short of taking it in to be checked on diagnostic equipment it's the best method I can think of.

Maybe you just need to wipe battery stats. One trick that works is let it drain completly and let it be drain over night and charge it again keep doing a couple of days it may just get better. But think is just battery problem not hardware related.
My Original HTC battery worked its way down to 2 hours of usable talk time. Eventually, got so bad that it barely charged on anything but a high current wall charger. Technically it was under warranty at the time...
Ordered 2 Anker Batteries w/ charger for $30, and not long after that the charger broke. It quit charging batteries.
I then just stuck with one Anker battery in my phone and the other as backup. The battery I used the most is now down to about 4 hours of life on a full charge. The least used is about 8. I try to keep the worse one charged up as a backup in a pinch and now use the good battery full time.
Just how life goes sometimes...

Yeah that Anker charger is the weak-spot in that 2 battery package deal. The damn thing is flimsy and fragile. I'm so paranoid about breaking it I treat it with kid gloves. The batteries are pretty good though. The package was one of the best investments I made since owning the Amaze. Using indelible marker I labeled them 1 and 2, and rotate their usage with my original HTC (which is easy to distinguish). This way when I'm on the road I always have one fully charged spare handy, one charging at home, and one in my handset.

But When I was using official ICS from T-mobile, I had the same problem, even after wiping. I even faced a funny thing. Percentage of battery in bar was different from percentage shown in lock screen!!!
After flashing custom rom, All problems GONE!
I really miss the option to turn off the fast charging (it is present on my Note 4, for example). I don't need the fast charging, because I charge the phone mostly at nights. And I'm almost sure, that the fast charging will degrade the battery more, than the regular charging.
The thing is, the Mate 10 isn't officially available in my country, so I will not be able to change the battery (don't really want to disassemble it myself).
What do you think, will it be preferable to use my Note 4 charger (Mate 10 should use it as a regular 5V/2A charger), or maybe the native Huawei charger may somehow be more friendly? Maybe, any recomendations?

You can control battery degradation with accubattery on playstore. Very great app.
Better to charge to 80 % max in order to degrade battery slower.
App gives good advices et a lot of infos.
Moreover, yes, supercharger probably degrade battery a bit faster but I think it's negligible

Thanks, but I don't see it a handy solution, to be honest. I charge the phone at night, so I can't stop the charging at 80%.

We're automatizing anything we can, and you're suggesting to wait for a notification everytime I charge, to pull of the charging cable. Wrong or not, but I'll stick with the "plug in and forget" option, cause its really easier to disassemble the phone once in a 1.5-2 years and change the battery, than to wait it charging to 80% every other day So, the questions about the charger selection and battery improvements in past 3-4 years remain open

Ok as you want dude but honestly have a normal charger is useless..
Are there any studies that prove that fast charging can degrade the battery performance faster?
A shower and breakfast is all the time it takes to charge to 80%.

Speaking as an electronics engineer (and not as an expert on batteries), I'd suggest that "slow and steady" will always be kinder to the battery, no matter how much technological work has gone into preventing the battery from destroying itself through fast charging.
Keep the SuperCharge charger that came with your 'phone handy in case you need an emergency top-up, but for overnight charges use an el-cheapo 1A USB charger. It'll be more than enough to bring you to 100% by the morning, and there'll be no chance of crystallising/drying-out the battery's electrolyte.

You're probably right but science proves now that the most important thing in order to maintain battery is to charge it to 80 % max.
Your point is to be kinder to the battery right?
Better way is to charge it less than fully.
But, anyway, you're want to be stubborn ?. So, buy a normal charger, charge phone fully the night and don't cry after if you're battery doesn't work well.
And to answer to your "question" better is to buy a huawei charger if you don't want for sure any problem...
its not a good maner to compare note 4 with mate 10
samsung usually uses low quality batteries in cell phones
but after s6 and note 5 it improved the quality
about huawei's batteries
the batteries are in high quality state
my brother has huawei honor 3c lte. he bought it around of 5 years ago. after years we couldnt realize a significant weakness.
so dont worry about mate 10 and its super charge

This is app is a must have and thought I'd share. Like everywhere I have read, they say battery should not be charged to 100%, it will hurt the battery somehow. This app "Battery Charge Limit" automatically (with root) stops charging the phone at whatever percent you want and starts charging back up at whatever percent you want. So you can always stop before it hits 100. It can be used without root but it only notifies you and you have to manually unplug the phone to stop charging. Better with root since its automatic.

Well coming from an HTC device where after like what 6 months, my battery starts dying much quicker and hopefully this app and the nature of Samsung makes my phone battery last longer. Never owned a Samsung, so I don't know how the battery lasts over time.
This is a myth, modern phones already prevent damage from overcharging with the charge controller in the phone. Fast charging and slow charging also does not make a difference in battery longevity.
Just use your phone like a phone.

@nukeclears you need to bone up a bit more on battery chemistry before making statements like this. Overcharging is very different from charging to 80%. That's why Apple just implemented a charge limit in ios13 and Tesla strongly recommend charging to 80/90% max for daily use. Samsung just don't want to do this because they haven't felt enough pressure. I'll bet they implement it on the S11 and then for all phones by the end of the year.
Tab S4 has a setting to stop charging at 80%

I have a Note 3 with battery since 2014 or 15, it still gives me the same power, sometimes it's better than it first was.
Charging fast/slow doesn't affect anything, I'm doing so for years.
I really don't think batteries die, if you felt it's weakening, just change OS, not the battery.
Samsung themselves, on the s10 series, suggest to charge from 30% to 80% everytime you need a charge.
In my daily usage, stopping charge to 90% is enough and I have all the juice i need till the next day.
If you are rooted, Battery Charge Limit app can be very useful to optimize the life of your battery (remember: battery is the first hardware component that ages your phone). On my 2015's Sony phone, they wanted me to pay 75 euros for battery replacement...

I am really not sure, if I do need these mentioned charging techniques. Apparently you can charge your phone from zero to 100 below one hour. Is it good to charge a phone very often and that fast? Doesn't it heavily influence the battery life? Shouldn't you just use a slow charger and charge it only up to 90%?

Well I don't think the charger influences battery lifespan, it's how you use the device that does
Most phone batteries are lithium ion batteries and honestly chargers (except fake ones) will not harm your battery regardless of charging speed, phones are built to handle them
If you continuously fast charge your battery, it will lower the lifespan of the battery over time. Unless you're planning to keep this phone for more than 4 years, it's not really that big of an issue. But charging speed does affect battery life.
What affects battery life is letting it go to 0% on Lithium. Just make sure you start recharging it around 10%-20% and you will make the battery last for a very long time.
