[Q] Hardware: replacing eMMC requires replacing the CPU? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, the phone (GT-I9300) is at the already at the repair shop (in Beijing), but I think I'm getting ripped off. My phone suddenly got bricked (horribly, no response of any kind) and the repair guy gave the following information:
1. The "memory" is fried.
2. Need to replace the memory and also the CPU because they are "a set".
3. My data is lost.
4. Cost estimate: 500 Chinese Yuan (US$ 80).
I'm trying to make sense of it. The guy is pretty shady but I had little choice. The phone is not under warranty, and although I turned to the the local Samsung center first, those sons of b*****s won't even look at it because it was purchased outside of China.
From what he said (memory faulty, data lost) I understand that the problem is the eMMC (which seem to be consistent with some of the "sudden death syndromes" reported online); the question is why replacing it allegedly requires also replacing the CPU... One theory is that he just wants an excuse to steal my original CPU and put a cheap one instead. Alternatively, maybe the eMMC really has to correspond to the CPU, and if I want to keep the cost under $80 I must get a cheaper eMMC+CPU set?
A motherboard design chart with the location of the eMMC and CPU will be really helpful.
Thanks!

[Q] htc hd 2 overheating problems / new board

hi i had some overheating problems with my htc hd 2 for the past month. mobile wouldn't start up if overheated or close during a phone call and then refuse to start up again. i was dumb enough to take it back to the service with a broken bootloader which ended up with them refusing to swap the board of the mobile for me with the warranty and asking 312 euro from me to change it instead.
at this point i'm looking for a place i could buy a new board and swap it myself or any other way i could fix it. flashing it again will not change anything i've done that several times and restoring the bootloader and taking it back to service won't work either cause now they've put the info in the online service system that i have illegal software in the mobile and the company wont touch my motherboard (correct me if it's not called motherboard in mobiles but i don't know the exact term for it).
sure it's my fault i was stupid enough to forget about the warranty issue with the non official software but now that it's done and i can't get it fixed for free i'm looking for a way to get it fixed as cheap as possible.
thanks for you time
may be there one application that you installed that cause the cpu to work continuously which result in overheating
anyone knows a site that sells cheap boards for hd 2 ?
before buying a new mainboard .. try to flash your Radio
hi,
hope u found solution for ur problem
actually i have the same problem with my htc hd2 and i can't send it for warranty
i want to know what u did with urs
thanks,
Sorry but what has this got to do with WM6.5? Shouldn't this be in the General section as its not related o a specific OS in any way, just the hardware.

sgs2 emmc chip

Hi, as many of gs2 users last days I have bricked my beautiful phone ;x jtag cant connect with it, i figured out that there are only two ways, I can buy crushed one and replace motherboard or find a source of flash (emmc) chips and replace it. And there is a question, is there any chance to order this chip? Anywhere? My unofficial service told me that the will try to find this part but I want to find something on my own too.
Same problem here, what came of your situation did you get the chip ?
Dying to know too.. :crying:
its complicated and I needed to use black magic but I have new device for price of 50$, your last chance is to look for broken device

Samsung S3 I9300 Owners that have/had a cracked screen

Hello all
I'm in a bit of a pickle, My S3 got a sudden death overnight while it was charging normally
It was rooted with stock kernel as well as having a cracked glass screen from a slight fall on asphalt..
Now my problem begins with dealing with Samsungs Service center, They claim they wont fix my SDS (motherboard) under warranty unless i pay ~210$ to change my whole topframe/digitizer/LCD/Glass which costs around $175 online, and all they way down to $150 if you buy bulk.
Anyways i'm pretty sure that the crack is mainly on the surface and affects only the glass screen panel, which I'm perfectly capable of changing myself (Is it possible without voiding warranty?) and the kicker is it costs ~$7 dollars..
So what should i do? fix it myself and try to have them cover the mobo/SDS, or is there a way i can make sure its only the glass screen so i can use that as leverage when dealing with the Service Centre, TBH i dont trust them 1 bit, they are all incompetent and just keep repeating what ever is handed to them.. The guy even tried to flash my phone then and there through Odin, he was convinced it was only a software thing. The crazy thing is before that my PC could see my phone when i connect it and Odin would read my USB connection normally.. NOW its definitely worse cuz even the PC cant identify the device when plugged in, nor odin...
Please advise on what the normal operating procedure in your country for a situation like this, also which path should i take? Of course i would rather not have to pay and extra $210, as i specifically asked them to just leave the screen alone, i have no problem with it, and just change the mobo or hand me a new one.. The reply is always along the line of... " its against policy sir, once a phone enters maintenance, everything has to be fixed" OK i get that, a bit cheeky. But when i can fix my screen for 10$ then its plain theft!
Im soo disappointed in Samsung at the moment. Can't believe i'm geting completely F***** out of my hard earned cash like that.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
PS: i'm currently using a $17 LG phone, amazing, charged for 2 hours, its been full battery for 4 days lol /Sarcasm
That is the normal Samsung response .
Why are you not returning the phone to the vendor under warranty ??

Brother, Why don't you try some other samsung service center?
It doesn't matter if your touch screen is damaged or even not working. If your phone is under warranty, and you ask them to replace the motherboard they can not refuse! (The broken screen does not comes under warranty) tell them to accept the phone like that only.
May be the guy in the service center you approached is a retard! Try another service center.
SERIOUSLY BRO!

Whats normal? are you sure you read the entire post. They took my phone in for a checkup today, not feeling optimistic at all.. and under 'warranty' ill likely have to pay a minimum of 220$ to get it fixed, that includes a complete new front frame/glass/digitier/lcd.. plus they might not cover the SDS motherboard because it has a cracked screen, the replacement of which [only the glass screen] would cost me ONLY 10$ to fix. But they say if its cracked it might be misuse therefore voiding waranty! BULL****, the phone is made so the screen cracks and not the actually LSD hence it should be quicker, cheaper and easier to fix
The motherboard part i'm not sure but i think its about $170 online price.
How are you not getting this! its obscene thievery masked behind "maintenance policy".
If all else fails i will be between throwing my phone in the trash and buying a new phone.. or spend around $200+ buying the parts and assembling them myself! this is not the kind of service you expect from a high end smart phone mnfg.

Thanks already read through that thread!
They all operate under the same pollicies (Samsumg centres) here in Egypt! They don't just assume the customer is correct and under warranty, they tend to try to scam you to pay up for anything.. although it should be covered under warranty..
disgusting service. I want to file a formal complaint to Samsungs regional director once i get his contact..

Try e-mailing your complaint through samsung official website.
They should call you back in 48 hours.

You asked the question i replied yes its normal what more did you want ??
Samsung's response as i said it their normal response for damaged phones as you describe warranty void .
You say .
>>>It was rooted with stock kernel as well as having a cracked glass screen from a slight fall on asphalt.. >>>
That means in Samsung's view according to their warranty terms they will refuse warranty on two counts its rooted and it has a cracked screen .
Multiple identical posts on XDA and i have yet to see one where Samsung fix free of charge and that's world wide .

[Q] Lost volume in right channel

Hi All
I tried to find the answer, in vain.
For the last few weeks the volume of the right channel has nearly disappeared. I have 95% on the left and 5% on the right.
I use the original software in it.
I was looking for a balance button but can't see any.
The warranty run out two weeks ago.
Any thing I could do to restore its volume.
I tried different headphones, no changes.
Thanks
TA
Replace jack; fairly sure there's a detailed run through (with pics/parts needed) in the service manuals for the phone which have been posted here in the past (do an XDA or Google search). Or pay a local mobile repair shop to do it if you're not confident enough.

Is it an expensive task to do? I don't see myself doing it nor have the tools for the job.
Don't know/don't know exactly what parts are required (but remember seeing the run through in the manuals). It's fairly obvious it's a hardware issue, and as it's happening with headphone/headset, logic says you replace the jack first. Obviously if you're paying someone else to do that, it becomes expensive due to the cost of labour.

So, after some extra search, I have discovered that there is something broken with Android 4.1.2 audio.
I have installed Poweramp and got the some balance back. So it is a software problem.
Where to go from there?
Thanks. TB

Broke LCD on Samsung Galaxy S6 NEED TO RECOVER PHOTOS!

So last week someone dropped a weight on my phone and broke the screen completely, I can no longer see anything on the screen. So Verizon's insurance company sent me another phone and I have to ship this one back however I have 2 years of photos on this phone that I do NOT want to lose. Does anyone know any ways to recover the ALL the files on this device? For some reason the finger print scanner doesnt work either so I can't really unlock it, and can't use the samsung page to unlock it because I already setup my new phone so I wasn't phone-less. Any information would be much appreciated and is welcomed; any way to buypass the lock or somehow just download the phone to my PC ect.
THANKS!!
Display repair or forensic data recovery from USF chip
If you have no prior access enabled, that is you have usb debugging (would be easiest) still in it's default off state, you have no custom recovery ROM installed, no screen mirroring solution that was installed at an earlier date etc. then really your only option is to go for the hardware.
Basically, you can either have the display replaced or pay a professional data recovery/forensics company to remove the internal sd card and backup the data from there.
Replacing the display is the less expensive choice. It will cost around 250 Euro where I live. If you want to try it yourself, the mere hardware will cost around 100 Euros (that's for the S6 - other phones have much cheaper displays). However, you'll likely need extra tools that are not standard household items, so the effective cost may be greater. Ofcourse with this option there's the risk that more than just the display is broken and your investment will have been for nothing.
Removing the internal flash memory chip and backup the data on it was deemed somewhere between impossible and highly impropable until recently, because it is so tightly embedded into the device. Around a year ago, chances of recovery were said to be around 40% by professional data recovery companies. Apparantly, this has greatly improved lately though, with a likeliness of 95+% now being stated. However, this involves very precise work and specialised hardware, so prices are accordingly high. I don't know exact prices in western Europe but judging from other types of professional recovery think 700/800 Euro upwards. Apparantly there are eastern European companies which offer the service for only around 300 Euro though. Look for "chip-off" method and UFS if you want to go in this direction.
(And just in case you're thinking about trying this yourself, take a look at this thread - and that isn't even related to the new UFS chips embedded in the Samsung Galaxy S6.
I'm sorry that I can't provide any better prospects for you. I guess that's what we get for letting companies get away with selling ever more locked up devices to us that we have practically no control over ourselves anymore.
Still, I wish you good luck!
