You might get help if you specify what you used to get root- and the procedure you followed, or the specific guide you used? Fingers crossed for you!:fingers-crossed:
You have knox bootloader that is why root is not working' you take the OTA update right?

Check my post here and just follow the info and it should give you the custom recovery and use one of those custom recoveries and flash with odin which will require the tar file then, but remember once you are done flashing one of the custom recoveries YOU MUST reboot immediately back into the custom recovery otherwise the phone will re-install the stock recovery, you just have to do this once..then just put the SU zip file i have at the bottom of that post and put it onto your internal sdcard or external sdcard and flash it with the recovery.
Then boot up the phone and go to the SU app and open it and if your phone has the knox crap in it, then it will ask if you want to disable knox and choose yes, and if your phone does not have knox in it them you are done and should have the custom recovery installed and be rooted as i have the i527m model of the mega and i have a custom recovery and is rooted and it all works great.
Note: Also install Busybox (Stericson) which you can get from the google play store as you might need this installed also. :good:

I have stock Mega 6.3" (SGH-I527M) that hasn't been rooted or anything (pretty brand new) and runs Android 4.4.2. Does this Saferoot work for me? I don't want to risk it or trigger Knox.
Also, this person explains a simple way for rooting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSR6IupxsbM
It is for MetroPC. Can someone with custom recovery download the following rooting method and tell us if it works: http://www.mgyun.com/m/ <- I tried it. Doesn't work!

Getting root with towelroot.com, downloading and installing and activating busybox from the play store and the downloading the Safestrap version 3.72 APK that is specific to your device is the easiest way to go. You do not need to downgrade and ODIN flash as per the thread you mentioned anymore. You will be able to make a backup via Safestrap.

I was on NC5 and rooted via the downgarde/ODIN flash method. When towelroot came out I wiped and restored to 100 percent factory and tested the method I mentioned and it worked with no issue at all. As far as a thread, I am not sure, I did this only to see for myself if it worked as it is a much easier method than downgrade/ODIN flash and I had zero issues.

The same method works on the S5 from Verizon also. Just know that with Safestrap 3.72 on the S4, you can only flash new ROM's in the "STOCK" slot as using a different partition WILL soft brick your device.

There's a way to root every version of software they're released. Since the bootloader is unlocked, all that's needed is to flash a custom recovery, then when TWRP asks you if you want to root, just click yes, and you're done. It'll always be like this unless they lock the bootloader.

Why? Tmobile does even care.
No I know that, but Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle does care.. the dongle won't work on a rooted device. I had a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 that I rooted but I used triangle away to reset counter and it then would work. I use my tablet and dongle most nights and my other allshare in my car for my appradio. The S5 and Tab S will be first devices I didn't root
Any news on Knox?
Its been awhile since i rooted my phones and flashed roms. I juat rooted my s5. But i dont believe i installed a custom recovery. In the past i always downloaded rom manager and installed cwm through the app. But it says device not compatible. Or ud download goo manager and install twrp through that app and i dont see the version for my tmobile s5 listed. Can someone help me with flashing a custom recovery. And recommend any stable custom roms i should try out. Also if there is anything i need to be careful of when flashing i dont care about tripping my knox counter. My device isnt warrantied anyway.

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask, but I just updated my Verizon GS4 to 5.0.1 using the OTA updates and I can boot into both the recovery and download modes. If i can boot into these what's stopping me from just flashing a new ROM in the download mode (it explicitly says this mode is used to install a custom OS) or applying an update from my external storage in the recovery mode?
Thanks!

You can go ahead and do that but you will probably brick your phone. Steps to flashing a custom OS is usually, root your phone and then unlocking the bootloader. After unlocking then you can install a custom recovery image. From the recovery you can flash custom OS and kernels. I believe the custom OS you are talking about is for an OS that is straight from Verizon. I wouldn't dare flash any ROM from Cyanogen, or Liquid or ASOP etc through the built in recovery of the phone. That's why you install a custom recovery from TWRP or Clockwork. It's your phone so you go ahead and do what you like, if it does work, well hell, let me know. Good luck.

Root
I tried to root after I installed lollipop OTA. Root checker said I wasn't rooted. It's then I found out I made a big mistake. After
a charge up the other night I turned my phone back on & noticed the lock symbol in the screen showed the unlocked lock.
Now my question is ....... is my phone unlocked , or is it just there is no bootloader that can gain access to the system?
All help with this is welcome!
Now that I think about it I realize what's happening. The phone unlocked the boot loader won't give me access to the system.
Boy it feels like I'm at the gate but can't get in.

Your bootloader isn't unlocked. There's not even a root method for this OC1 OTA. Samsung and Verizon have locked the bootloader permanently since 4.3 Jelly Bean. No bootloader has been unlocked since. None! There's a whole lot more technicalities to unlocking the bootloader than simply rooting. Chances are u may have tripped your KNOX counter, meaning your warranty is void. And it's irreversible.
So...VRUGOC1 OTA Update = NO CUSTOM ROM, RECOVERY, UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, ROOT, OR DOWNGRADE.

OK Let me backup. I guess I typed this improperly without thinking.
I realize that this is a very technical process to unlock phones . I also realize that there is not a method @ THIS TIME to gain root access to th S4.
Let me start over.
Before I received the OTA update I had tried Towel Root with no success. Then after I got th OTA I tried Odin without success. Now I did not know at the time time there wasn't an available method to root. Shortly after research I found out.
I have read root is not the problem but the is no way to unlock the bootloader. I just noticed the unlock symbol & had to question it.
I could give a damn if my warranty is void .I have 1 rooted phone. My be the other some time down the road ?

SEARCH BEFORE POSTING EVERYTHING ASKED IN THIS THREAD HAS BEEN COVERED
THERE IS NO CUSTOM RECOVERY FOR VERSION'S GALAXY S4 PERIOD
the only thing you can do is root and install safe-strap
then your options for roms are as follows
1: kitpop 1.3 <Which is the only ASOP Rom
2: or Hyperdrive Rls20
Those two are your ONLY Options
if you took the OTA you will be unable to downgrade to NC5 which is the only possible candidate for getting custom kernels to boot which hasn't happened yet

1. How do we all know this is trustworthy? I have read many things across the net. Some good and some bad.
2. If it is trustworthy why is there not an English translation? There may be one but I have yet to find ot.

I have just re-rooted using kingroot, but had to use the desktop v3.0, and yes it is all in Chinese. I don't speak Chinese so it was definitely a trial and error process. ugh. so frustrated! I got the edge Friday and rooted it using autoroot with no problems. I tried Saturday to install a custom ROM and got stuck in a boot loop. Finally flashed new firmware via Odin late Saturday night and was able to get it to boot. Since then I can't get root back. Every time I do, I get stuck in a bootloop. I get to the sprint spark screen and it reboots. I have followed the instructions step by step for root including the updated superuser. After I run autoroot via Odin, it restarts but then I boot into recovery, install superuser and reboot and it goes into the loop. I have to reflash the firmware via Odin to get out of it. I used N915PVPU4COG1_N915PSPT4COG1_SPR from the samsung firware website. My phone info is:
version - 5.1.1
Kernel - 3.10.40-5227917
Build, software and baseband are all - LMY47X.N915PVPU4COG1
I'm stumped. I can usually figure this out by myself and since I got my first Android years ago I've been able to eventually get things to work. I've tried superuser 2.16 and 2.46 with the same results.
The only thing I haven't done is try CWM and that's just because I KNOW TWRP works because I got it to work Friday.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../root-supported-kernel-5-1-1-testers-t3176651
I don't believe cf-autoroot is working on 5.1.1. Also since you took the 5.1.1 update you won't be able roll back to a different firmware. Just sit tight and wait for root to become available for 5.1.1.
The thread i linked to is for a root supported kernel. It isn't available yet but hopefully will be available soon.
Version 5.1.1. isn't able to be rooted yet. You just got the edge and it of course came with that ROM. Every one who had 5.0.1 was able to root (I'm still rooted because I didn't update), but there were ones that took the update and assumed that they could root like before. But that's not the case. Samsung did stuff to the new version to stop the old ways of rooting. There are a few that are trying to get root, but it's been a process since the update came out, and there isn't any word on success. And the new ROM doesn't allow you to go to an older version. Just like ones that updated to Lollipop from KitKat, they can't go back to KitKat, and anyone who has this new version can't root or go anywhere but wait and hope. It's not just you.
