[Q] New to Verizon version of S4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am tired of reading and believe me I have done a lot of it. haha
My Brother has the Verizon S4 SCH-i545 with the latest OTA NC5. I have the TMO version and have been rooted since april 2013 and have flashed multiple ROMS and recoveries and blah blah
I was reading over the forum "4.x-to-4.4.2-SAFEUP-or-DOWNgrade w Root&SafeStrap featuring1FileFlash&DoneNC2/NC5-EZ"
What i am confused about is if i should get root access using towelroot and then some how make a nandroid backup and then follow the steps in the forum? or is there is a way to make a nandroid backup without root? that way i have peace of mind while following the steps?
I have been reading off and on for about 3 1/2 hours.
Please Advise

Getting root with towelroot.com, downloading and installing and activating busybox from the play store and the downloading the Safestrap version 3.72 APK that is specific to your device is the easiest way to go. You do not need to downgrade and ODIN flash as per the thread you mentioned anymore. You will be able to make a backup via Safestrap.

Thank you by the way for responding quickly

I was on NC5 and rooted via the downgarde/ODIN flash method. When towelroot came out I wiped and restored to 100 percent factory and tested the method I mentioned and it worked with no issue at all. As far as a thread, I am not sure, I did this only to see for myself if it worked as it is a much easier method than downgrade/ODIN flash and I had zero issues.

The same method works on the S5 from Verizon also. Just know that with Safestrap 3.72 on the S4, you can only flash new ROM's in the "STOCK" slot as using a different partition WILL soft brick your device.

SCH-i545 Verizon GSIV - Stock from Root MK2

Hi All!
I rooted my Galaxy S4 on Verizon earlier today (well, attempted to) with VRoot. It worked, but everything was really sluggish so I attempted to flash back to the stock Samsung ROM. I discovered that since I was running 4.3 with the MK2 OTA, I can't flash a previous version. I can't find a copy of the MK2 ROM anywhere. Does anyone here have any suggestions or maybe a link to the MK2 ROM for the i545 on Verizon?
Thanks!
Ross

There are several ways to root the mk2 version but both vroot and kingo have been deemed unsafe by the xda mods, in the development thread there is however a root method for mj7 that does in fact work with mk2. also im gonna warn you before hand that there is no custom recovery available for the mk2 or mj7 versions of the gs4.

If your talking About flashing custom ROMS/recovery's, then no, and if you attempt to do either it most likely will result in a brick. However a Dev by the name of Hashcode, is currently working on making safestrap compatible with MJ7 & MK2. I hope that helps clear up some things.

How did you use Kies to download MK2 when you while rooted?
I have the Verizon S4... I took the OTA and updated to MK2. I then rooted using Saferoot.
All is good ...
Now.. Is the recovery unlocked? or do I need Safestrap Recovry to get ROMs on this?
Please advise.

That's caused by a defect in the install script that I introduced when trying to add more prompting to help people connect. Re-download and it should be OK.

I can't confirm but it has been said that mk2 is backwards compatible. Flash mj7 stock via odin. Then ota back to mk2. I know it's a long way around but it's worth looking into.

You ONLY can go backwards from MK2 to MJ7. You seem to be interpreting this as being able to go back from MK2 to anything, and that's not the case.
Both of those releases only allow custom ROMs using Safestrap, and both support the same ROMs. There's no point in downgrading to MJ7.

Rooted S4. Installing custom roms

Hey all. Just switched back to Droid after being with iPhone for a few years. I've rooted my s4 but don't believe I'm able to install custom roms based on the build. I've attached a screen of my about page. Any advice greatly appreciated.

With the MK2 build you can only use safestrap as your custom recovery and your limited on what custom roms you can use. I'm on the MK2 build as well and personally I like the stock rom with the tether mod.

Okay Buddy with the MK2 builld you can only use TW based roms no ASOP/Cyanogenmod.
1.) To root u must use saferoot here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
2.) Then you must install Safestrap 3.71 Hashcode has a thread about ithere: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
3.) After doing that you want to look on this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630040
decarturbob has compiled a list of MK2 Safestrap Compatible roms.
Hope this helps buddy. Make sure you read the threads carefully and follow each step. My current fav roms are the TW(ASOP themed roms):fingers-crossed:
Thank you all for the help. Really appreciate it.
To add to my question, after rooting, running the stock ROM, can I turn off OTA updates? I keep getting an annoying notification to update.

Using Titanium Backup, you can "freeze" applications, which keeps them from running. The software update application is called SDM.
So, open Titanium, search for "SDM", the click on "Freeze!". It won't run any longer.

You flash the modules file AFTER you flash a custom ROM into a ROM slot. How did you manage to flash into a ROM slot if you can't get into Safestrap recovery?
If installing Safestrap fails and tells you you're not rooted, then either you're not rooted, or you still have Knox enabled. You'll need to be rooted before you can do any of this, so start there. See the Saferoot thread.

[Q] [Help] New to rooting

Hello,
I am really new to rooting and custom roms. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a tutorial on how to root the S4-i545 on NC5. I don't understand custom recovery, and overall I'm just a really bad noob at this. Could I be linked to an informative tutorial to help me better understand things? Also, if there is a tutorial on how to root the i545 on NC5 that would be fantastic.
I'm really stuck and I've been researching for the past few days and still haven't come across anything helpful..
Thanks!

rooting and custom roms loading are not for the faint of heart. Going to NC5 is fairly complex process and requires alot of patience and alot knowledge concerning odin process as using odin is key part of the inst all of downgrading. I take it your phone is already NC5 and you took the OTA?

Yes. I downloaded the OTA from Verizon for 4.4.2. I've heard many times that a NC5 root is not available, so is there any way you know to downgrade back to 4.3 for root? I understand there is a post by surge on how to upgrade to NC5 and keep root after that, but I can't seem to find a post on how to downgrade back to 4.3

Read the following: from Surge1223.
That will allow you to downgrade to 4.3, root it, then eventually upgrade to 4.4 while retaining root.
You do NOT want to downgrade to 4.3 if you've installed 4.4. The kernel modules for 4.3 won't work unless you run bypasslkm at every boot, which appears to be a challenge for a number of people. Once you've started the NC5 upgrade, you really want to be on 4.4.
If you're still on 4.3 (MK2) and want to upgrade to NC5, I'd recommend using this. It's a lot easier to do, but it only applies if your MK2 system is basically factory stock but rooted (or if you can get it back to stock.)
I've gotten my answer on downgrading, could someone please explain to me what recovery is?

There's three ways you can boot your android device.
First is normal mode. That's the way it nomally boots, running the full operating system.
The second is downloader mode. This mode allows you to flash new software images using ODIN.
The third is recovery mode. Factory recovery allows you to flash updates, wipe the stock ROM, factory reset, etc. A custom recovery allows you to flash arbitrary updates (those which aren't signed by Samsung).
Phones running MDK bootloader can have a custom recovery that allows you to flash nonstandard ROMs.
Past MDK, this requires the use of Safestrap recovery.
Quick question - where would I put necessary files on my SD card? Under which directory?

[WIP] Safestrap 3.72 compatible ROMS list [KitKat NC5]

this thread is track information on SS 3.72 compatible ROMS for kitkat. Please be aware that you must upgrade/downgrade to NC5 via several methods listed below. The discussion of that process not the purpose of this thread so lets not make work for the mods to clean out such postings.
Additionally SS3.72 has only been OFFICIALLY released for ATT S4's but can be used on Verizon with some limitations with the most important one being the lack of ROM Slot creation and installs. ALL roms must be loaded to the stock slot.
I repeat, ALL roms must be loaded to the stock slot. Please be advise to follow all ROM install steps outlined in their particular thread.
As with my thread on SS3.70/3.71, I will try to personally load the ROMS myself before I place in my list but posters can post ROMS they have loaded and tried that will run locked bootloaders via SS3.72 but I will only place in my list once I have done the deed. This thread is NOT for discussion on what ROMs are best as that is best for each user to decide for themselves. This thread is not for discussion of ROM issues, that is best serve in that ROm's home thread.

All revisions of the I545 after MDK (ME7, MI1, MJ7, MK2) can NOT have a custom recovery, only Safestrap can be used.
To locate your firmware version (build number) use Settings/More/About phone. Read the "Build number". The last 3 characters are how we describe what version your phone is using and why we always ask what build or base you have. Do not confuse this with the radio baseband. I strongly urge to install "phone info.apk" from the playstore. This an invaluable app for all S4 users!!!!

Blackbox 3, Purified, Phoenix, gDux, the 1st NC5 Prerooted KNOX FREE Stock ROM, VDSS, Foxhound, Chaos, CarHD are all sitting there. some are test versions but none the less. should keep someone busy for a day or two
Where can I get more information on Blackbox 3, Phoenix, Chaos, and CarHD Roms? I can't seem to find any info on them on the S4 Android Development section.

looking forward to finding an awesome kit kat rom now that I'm all rooted and ready to go!
Heres so 4.4.2 safestrap ROM's I found
Slimrom and AOSP Illusion
Foxhound
Bajarom
gDux
PurifieD
BlackBox
Bunch of SS 4.4.2 Roms here
I downloaded the Chaos Rom bc it really seems interesting. However, it seems that it has to be installed via recovery. What are the prerequisites before installing this rom?
I know I have to backup my current cache in recovery and replace the cache.ext4.win file, but which one gets replaced? The one from my backup or the one from the Chaos Rom I want to install? Thanks.

I didn't see jrkruse's XXUGNE8 4.4.2 International port listed. I'm running it on SS with no problems.

It's good for those that want the stock look, but without Knox (interferred with my VPN widget, even when "disabled") and also Google Wallet working.

No prob, I appreciate there being a list of "confirmed" ones. The link was in the post. I'm still using it so I can vouch that it works.
Eclipse TW should be included when it updates to 4.4.2 using safestrap

MK2

I just got a Sim Unlocked Verizon S4 SCH-1545, running Stock 4.3, baseband 1545VRUEMK2. The phone is New.
A few questions:
How to root? I tried flashing TWRP using ODIN and it failed.
Can I flash same version of bootloader but for different carrier? like T-Mobile, or is there anyway of getting rid of the branding?
Can I flash using recovery a 4.4.4 Google Edition ROM?
How do I update the modem?
Appreciate any help, thank you.

If you're on mk2 you can use saferoot to root the phone.
You cannot install a true custom recovery like you tried to do since the bootloader is locked. You can install SafeStrap after rooting it.
You cannot flash another carriers bootloader either.
No Google Edition ROM either. Only Touchwiz based ROMs that correspond to the build you bootloader is...

I saw somewhere a change log for Tapatalk I believe where new users can be forced to read certain stickies pertaining to their devices. Definitely a cool idea that would save users a lot of time... Just looked for it but couldn't find it.

I wish we could enforce that. Eliminate 90% of the postings and people borking their phones....
