i messed up. i had cwm recovery rom running, but i did not install it. then i installed cyanogenmod. now recovery is cyanogenmod, but i want it to be cwm recovery. im stuck i dont know how to do what i want.
when i boot into recovery, i get cyanogenmod. adb and fastboot commands do not seem to be working. like i cant switch to fastboot via adb reboot bootloader. (no laughing please... is that because i flashed the custom rom???)
google play is not installed yet either because adb and fastboot isnt working like it was before i flashed cyanogenmod. i was going to try to download the cwm rom manager again to help me install (permanently) cwm recovery rom.
im so lost and a noobie, so details for replies please. and thank you for the help.
Its hard to give details in replies without details in your question, please give as much information about your device as possible, especially the make and model
But generally speaking fastboot will only work in bootloader and adb will only work in os and recovery mode
To give more specific answers on what your steps should be please give more device specifics

I don't believe cyanogen has made a recovery since the g1 days so I doubt you have this. But if your not sure what recovery you have upload a pic of it.
If you want a new recovery download the appropriate recovery for your device and use fastboot to install it, see here for help

If you continue to have issues with adb or fastboot commands, post all input/output from cmd/terminal here

I BET THATS IT! i installed the custom rom, so debugging needs to be turned back on. the setting was overwritten with the new rom flash. duh! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
for those of you coming to this thread after me, enable developer mode by going to Settings > About Phone and tapping on Build Number 7
Update: this did solve my problem/question. also watch cyanogenmod's screen. it will ask you to confirm debugging mode use each time or you can say its ok from this pc all the time. the latter worked best for me. another thing i ran into was phone would not power off unless i unplugged the usb cable. if i asked it to power off with the usb cable plugged in, it rebooted instead.

here's how i resolved my complete question:
1) enabled developer mode by going to Settings > About Phone and tapping on Build Number 7
2) activated advanced boot options by going to Settings > Developer Options > Advanced reboot (check it)
3) told phone to always allow debugging mode from my/this pc
4) booted into fastboot mode
5) plugged in usb cable
6) entered the command "adb reboot-bootloader" to switch to fastboot mode
7) entered the command "fastboot devices" to ensure i was in fastboot mode
8) entered the command "mfastboot flash recovery <downloaded.img>" to flash cwm
9) unplugged usb cable
10) reboot into recovery to verify flash was successful

Still trying to fix this I now have no recovery and just get the two icons wipe data and fast boot or it just keeps trying to load a Rom that isn't there so it sticks on the main logo screen if I could get it to show in windows that would be great but now I have no recovery I'm not sure how to even get it to install anything once I do !

As long as you have the fastboot logo, there should be hope. First, you will need to do whatever you can to get your computer to recognize fastboot mode. In order to do this, click on the fastboot icon on your prime and then plug your usb into your pc. What does windows say? Is the device showing in the windows device manager?

It shows up but then says failed to install driver will try it on different pc,s see if it works thanks for the replies seems fairly easy
Ive found on my device that it sometimes requests two different drivers. One for adb/fastboot, and one for mtp. I just cancel the one for mtp as they are not in the naked driver set, and windows then detects another different device.

Okay, you're half way home! The reason why nothing shows in adb is because fastboot and adb are two completely different interfaces. When in fastboot, your device will be expecting the fastboot command only.
Now what you will have to do is find a recovery that is in the blob format. Cwm would probably be okay. Twrp would be good, however the new version requires the nvflash version of the bootloader.
Once you find the blob of the recovery you want, place this in the same folder as the file fastboot.exe
It should be in the same place as adb. If not, place the blob somewhere easy to remember.
Then in a command prompt, type
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery blobfilename
If you placed the blob in the same place as fastboot, then the above will be the blob filename, or better would be to include the path as well.

hi guys and girls happy to report that thanks to the community my prime is aliiiive !!! used a utility off here called knives and forks to install adb and then downloaded fast boot and extracted to my users directory then used the fast boot command to push the blob to the prime into recovery then used adb push adb push virtuous_prime_s_9.4.2.21_v1.zip /sdcard/ and installed virtuous to get it running then it all shows up thankyou to everyone so happy took all of five minutes lol. my trip to london for 3 hours will be less boring now !!!:highfive:
So I'm preparing to do n4 conversion. However, as I'm making sure everything is ready to go I noticed the only way I can get into recovery is through an app called quick boot, is there something special in the boot loader to get to recovery ? I see no selectable options.
When in boot loader, fast boot is in red , but I can not pull up fastboot devices , when I try to do fastboot reboot, it just sits and stays at waiting for device. Under device manager it says android with a yellow exclamation point when in boot loader.
Lgnpst notices my phone both in download mode and when on, but not in boot loader. I just want to make sure I'm completely set before I do this. Please help!

Had the same problem. My drivers weren't installed right turns out. I just ended up using another PC that I knew for sure worked with adb.

I know for sure my adb is working though. In fastboot mode, I look in device manager and under other devices, I get android with a ! When the phone is on, all drivers are working perfectly. I'll try another computer for sure, just baffles me why everything but fast boot works :-/
Its not about what you know , but who you know.
Figured it out with help from kaerey on irc. Had to go into drivers and search manually for the driver.
1: get into boot loader
2. Open device manager
3. Click on android with yellow !
4. Select update driver
5. Search manually
6. Select android devices
7. Select Google under manufacturers
8. Select fast boot
9. Install and enjoy having fast boot again
To access recovery in boot loader:
1. Vol + twice
2. Power button
3. Your in recovery
Thanks again to kaerey from IRC
Its not about what you know , but who you know.
And what divers are you using?
I cant install drivers even in manual search mode.
I cant find fastboot in the list of Google... many zte and adb stuff but no fastboot

i say there is still hope. seems the only thing you messed up is the boot animation. according to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520309
you have fastboot for your device, so in theory, you could use a fastboot flash recovery command to install CWM, and use it to install a ROM

Hey guys, i'm new to the nexus world, i've had a Nexus 7 but I never rooted it.
I just got an LTE Nexus 9 and want to root it and flash TWRP. I'm using WinDroid. The problem is, i never get prompted to accept ADB permissions. Coming from a Samsung phone, when i check USB debugging, I automatically get a popup menu on my phone asking me with I want to give this PC permissions to use ADB. On my nexus 9, nothing happens. I see in Device manager that my nexus is connected under Android ADB Interface, and I know my drivers are installed, but WinDroid doesnt see my device, it's always offline.
Anybody know what could be the issue?

What is windroid? To root do this:
1. Enable developer options.
2. In developer options enable oem unlock
3. If you don't have fastboot set up on your pc Google 15 second adb install xda
4. Unlock your bootloader if it isn't already, fastboot oem unlock
5. Flash twrp onto your device, fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
6. Flash supersu in twrp

Windroid is an easy to use universal toolkit. it basically automates the Unlock/root/recovery process. You can find more details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/development/tool-windroid-universal-android-toolkit-t2984544
As for my issue, i have solved it checking in other threads, i have to set tablet to Camera USB mode, then it asks for RSA authentification right away. Thanks for your help anyways,

My tool worked well for unlocking bootloader but it failed to install recovery and root, I think this might be because Platform Tools was not installed. I ended up doing it manually via command line. Worked perfect. Thanks for your input
Hello,
I've installed the CM13 correctly but as other people I couldn't connect with wifi (had "authentification problem"), so I tried the reset factory.
The problem now is the tablet get an infinite loop at boot with the cyanogen logo and I cannot access the Bootloader.
I don't know what to do ... I'd appreciate your help
Just go into recovery, wipe clean, flash rom of choice, flash Gapps, reboot
And if cm13 is having an issue for you just try another rom, there are still many to choose from in the Nexus 10 forums

the recovery mode doesn't work. I may have found a solution to the soft unbrick using fastboot and the cmd but my tablet isn't recognized by the PC. I have tried to uninstall the driver, download manually it, that always result as an installation failed.
I can't see my nexus in PC but there is still the sound when I plug.
