I love HTC phones and the 8929 hands down my FAV. had to use BB for the past 2yrs. Now I got an HTC back in my hands. I was expecting it to be familiar to the tilt but now I feel really stupid.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to load my music (not itunes, that is all the info I can find) or pictures. I don't want an App. I'd like to see my file system or even be able to see the SD card but I can't find it on my puters file system.
So I know this means I am missing something simple. The handbook talks about amazon and mp3 store and the like. i have my own stuff I want.
So, can someone please point me to a link for dummies that will tell me how i can see my SD card and drag and drop my photos, ringtones, and music onto this phone.
I guess BB's media manger got me spoiled, hell even Motorola has great software for this simple stuff. I got the HTC sync loaded on the PC and all contacts loaded up but that is it.
I'm sorry for such a simple question but I'm lost and can't see the phone for the screen! Please help....
Thanks
when you hook it up to your pc a pop up should come up, select disk drive. if it doesnt pop up, slid open the notification tray and click on where it says "charge only" and change it to disc drive. it should pop up on your computer just like if you plugged in a flash stick.
just drag and drop the files onto your sd. the built in music/gallery apps will find the files and display them for you.

Thanks, I did that and your right the files did show. But the files are very different looking when compared to a windows and I didn't see a disk marked "sd card" or any files that look like they were on a sd card. So I stopped. if I move the files am I moving to the card or the phone memory?
Again, this is a very noob question for a forum of this type so Thanks for taking the time to answer. If you know of a stickies or any link where i can learn this system on my own i'd be happy to read it. But an answer would be great to. In any event looks like I have a lot of reading to do. I learned about my 8525 and 8929 from this site so I started here 1st. this site rocks.
Thanks
when you select it to go to "disc drive" it only hooks up the SD card, so no matter what you see in there, odd file folders, temporary files, etc, it's just stuff your apps put in there or you downloaded from the net, etc. not the phone's memory, just the card.
I usually follow the rule of "if I don't know what it is, don't touch it" which is a good creed to live by. sometimes apps just create folders and files on the sd card to free space up on your phone's internal memory. if you delete them, you could loose data for those specific apps, but even if you upped and deleted them all you wouldn't be doing anything that would would cripple your phone, just lose things like game saves, settings for certain apps, nothing you couldn't restore eventually.
anyway, to keep everything good and organized, just once you get it set to disc drive, go ahead and make a new folder called music, one called pictures, video, etc and then dump the files into their respective folder, the phone will pick em up no matter where they are.

What format are your books? How are you trying to move them? via usb? dropbox?
Do you have an SD card installed? Without one, only 1GB is seen on your internal memory if you connect your noob to your pc with the usb cord (but then you can move it to anywhere else).
Install a file explorer program (file expert is a good free one, root explorer is too but it has the possibility of having you misclick and mess up permissions on system folders).
Books/anything else moved to your NT's internal memory via usb -> shows up in /media. Books that you want your nook's native book applications to see -> move them to /data/books. Books that you have on your sdcard -> will not be seen by your nook's ebook reader program but you can make any folder anywhere and put books in it.
I recommend using an sdcard and downloading a program called Coolreader (android market); it's the best ebook reader I've found on this platform. It has a ton of settings and lets you configure it entirely (font, spacing, layout, behavior, etc etc). It reads from .zip archives and supports quite a few formats. It won't see anything with DRM protection on it that hasn't been removed, nor will it see .lit or amazon's proprietary formats. Anything with DRM on it that you bought from a certain market (Kindle, Adobe DRM ebook stores, etc) will only be read in associated programs (until you remove the drm) :/ Calibre is a great program (on the pc-side) to convert between book formats and manage your library, as a side note (not related to drm removal).
if I kept them on on my SD card how would I get them to show up using the stock ebook reader? Also....what format can I use? I have them in .mobi and .opf
Since I am rooted I can access the other 15GB ... I tried using es filer explorer (enabling root) and trying to move them to the books folder but I still cant get them to show up using the google books...kindle app and the stock app on the tablet

For books on your SD card go to your Library application -> my files -> press memory card, and your books should be there (at least the ones in a format it sees/reads).
Stuff in /data/books will show up automatically on your shelves, I think. Stuff in /media books will need to be imported the same way as above: library -> my files -> books (just not clicking on memory card button).
The Nook's eReader will see: EPUB, PDF, DOC, TXT, DOCM, DOCX. Epub is a great thing to convert all your books to as it's widely supported and is the public domain standard (by the way). Other reader apps will see more formats. I think .opf is epub though no? Or rather it's .epub with extra metadata, so that should be seen right off the bat. If not, do try Calibre out. One click conversions to any formats, and previews of how it looks on that format.
I am so sorry to keep asking about this...I have tried putting them in the data/books but nothing showed up in my library. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Sorry if I keep asking stupid questions...just really want this to show up on my "shelf"
Try this:
Open library -> my stuff (upper right) -> find book (sd card) -> select book/long press book -> select add to shelf from pop out menu. It will ask you to make a shelf; you can edit and add shelves via the menu that pops up (create new shelf/add to favorites).
Does that work?
Putting them in /data/books adds it to the reader+reader's directory. I could have sworn there was a way to mass-autoadd things to the shelves (checking now).
edit: Ok, I can't get it to work except through actually adding it with the Library app Rebooting the device puts the books from my files -> add to shelves in the "book" tab however, but they do not automatically appear there if you close/restart the library app without rebooting the nook. Odd behavior. If you have a lot of books the library seemed very finger intensive.
I can't figure out how to mass-move anything inside the Library app either, and I'm not sure whether it has this capability either. Yeah, I quickly moved away to using a file explorer app + another reader, as you can see
Hi ...
Nook is unable to see/read .mobi and .opf. You must convert them to epub, using a free program called Calibre.
Or they are locked by the use of a DRM... again Calibre can help you.
Try to find an ebook is an "epub," reread slowly, Zmobie's excellent posts, then try again...
ok....so I can get them to show in "my shelf" if and only if keep it on my SD card. My goal is to keep my books on my nt and music movies and pics on my SD card because it is only an 8GB.
I have a John Grisham collection that I have in a folder labled "john grisham" Should I not put it in a folder and just put it in the data/books folder
Ok, there are a bunch of book directories on the internal memory: media/My Files/Books seems to be the only one that automatically shows up in the Library books section but ONLY if you reboot. Copy/move the books you want on the internal memory there, to have them show up in Library.
If you (or when I did anyway) add a book through the Library application it will add it to the shelves, if you pull it from an sd card, or the 1gb media/My Files/Books storage folder. I went and pasted a bunch of books to test this and the Library app only sees things that is labeled as user storage (which I guess makes sense).
The way to mass-add books to the Library, without one by one dragging and adding through the Library app itself, is to move the files you want to automatically load up in Library (under the "books tab" - won't be added to a shelf automatically) is to copy all of them into media/My Files/Books, and restart the nook. The restart is needed as there doesn't seem to be a way to force it to scan for new books without a restart :/.
So:
It should *definitely* see all your books if you move them to media/my files/books, under the "books" tab, NOT under "my stuff" tab, if you copy and reboot the nook. You can then add them to shelves from the main "books" tab (which is what Library starts up in).
I don't know whether it scans inside folders - it *should* so you should try moving your John Grisham folder to media/My Files/books and see.
(I wonder what the three other /books locations are for :/. I don't seem to force Library to automatically recognize stuff in them. The reader does recognize anything in those directories, but then it's just a folder listing anyway).
edit: Ok it works inside folders for me. Have fun!
Thank you so much! Now if can figure out how to make folders on my desktop I will be good to go.....thank you so much
Calibre also works great for the Mac

On the Nook default launcher you can't, I think*? It's a reason I use another launcher (go/adw) and just create links to the Nook applications I use. You can make folders by default in either of the two above launchers.
*If anyone has managed this, do tell.

In Go launcher? HMMM. *tries*
edit: Oh, that's funny. You're right! I never actually make folders that way, because I have a few folders I got from accidentally dragging an icon onto another icons. They get grouped into a folder automatically I assumed the normal way worked, but if not, try that.
It doesn't work in any of the launchers. It must be disabled on the nook entirely in that case. Weird!
I wasn't able to drop appear together with ads to make a folder so I switched to go launcher and I like it so much better. It it what I use on my roped droid x2. I don't know if it was my hacked downloaded version of adw that caused this but for some reason I could not put anything on the top 1 inch or so of the screen. But I have had no issues with GO.
Sorry to keep asking newborn queriins. This is my first tablet. I have noticed that even though it is rooted and has an android os on it, there are still a lot of things that canny be done. I have not been able to download a facebook apk I have also had issues with the xda app. When I log in the app force closes. Not a big deal...I have then been going to the website. With that in mind....is there a way to put web page short cuts on the droidtop......
Again...sorry for the newborn questions and thank you again for your help

Yep, there are a lot of things disabled on the NT and won't work until apps get updated or mods are released for the tablet. It's a new (and restricted) device, so this is normal really; various things won't work off the bat. I think there is a Facebook app thread in these forums (or the dev forum) that gets that app to work somehow. I don't use it so I don't know specifics.
I heard that ADW launchers recent update changed/broke some things, so that might be why it isn't working perfectly. I use go launcher myself and ADW only for emergencies currently, yeah. Anyway, no worries on asking newbie questions - means the device is getting more users and exposure! Have fun with it.
Rooted my NT successfully! But..I mistakenly assigned BOX as my video player and cannot seem to find the way to undo it back to MX Video Player (which was working fin until I hit the wrong button choosing BOX as default). Now, all my .AVI video's launch BOX! Also...how do I access the extra memory freed up? I know it's there because I saw it, but I'd like to be able to move files to it easily.
OK, a few more. I am using GO Launcher EX and want to delete some of the icons at the bottom...how? Finally, when I connect my NT to my laptop and go into Android market, it recognizes my NT as "Barnes&Noble BNTV250." Is this limiting what I can install and/or should it be seeing it as something else - it is preventing me from installing many apps.

My experience with HC, ADW, & Zeam Launcher is you - ClickHold the Icon then drag it to a trashcan that pops up as a result of the ClickHold.
for the vid player problem you wanna go to the market and download "Manage Applications" then open it find BOX and clear the defaults. This will allow the prompter screen to come back up when clicking a movie.
As for the icons I dont know if your talking shortcuts or just the way GO launcher has the bottom main icons looking...you can download countless themes for this particular launcher and every theme makes the bottom icons look different. Im rocking the windows 7 theme for the GO launcher.
Hope some of this helped.
Got to the same place you specified. Have tried clearing defaults for BOX multiple times and its not working - keeps opening BOX.
uninstall box? then reinstall when it uses mx as default?
Figured it out
Uninstalled BOX. Accessed AVI file through ES File Explorer. Click and hold on it until menu opens, then selected "open as" and chose video, then got the options to select a new video player.
good. glad it worked
Any ideas on how to access the additional space freed up bu rooting? When I plug into my PC I get two new drives, MyNook and Removable disk. Double clicking on MyNook brings up all the basic folders, but clicking on the removable drive does nothing except give me a message "Please insert a dsik into removable drive G"
Is this partition still hidden or unrecognizable in some way?

Do you have an SD card? That's what the other drive is for. The B&N storage is not yet accessible in that way.

I do not have an SD card installed. I rooted the unit so the extra memory is out there somewhere. I tried using ES File manager to move a file to it per a video i saw, but it would not move it to that location.
From my experience the extra space is available on the NT but is not accessible when connected to my computer. I just copy what I need to my sd card or the public space in /mnt/ to make it available. I haven't tried using WiFi Explorer yet though.
So that appears to confirm what I was thinking- that everything has to go to the /mnt/ partition first (or come off an SD card), then it can be transferred to the B&N partition.
Is it still considered a B&N partition once you root and free it up? And what becomes of the B&N Downloads folder within the media folder?
Fuhu's Nabi 2 comes with 8 GB of internal storage, but the actual space available for app install evaporates quickly. Here are a few tips from my experience that may help you figure out possible space hogs.
Part of the problem is due to the Nabi 2's file storage system. Instead of its external storage being located at /mnt/sdcard, it is instead at /mnt/sdcard2. This causes problems as many programs will assume they are saving to the external drive at sdcard, but are instead using precious space on the limited internal drive.
There are a couple different work-around rooted options, but at this time they seem to me a bit like a bandage. If you feel like tackling these more advanced drive swapping options, see Root External 2 Internal SD (How-to for Nabi 2 by e2950) and DirectoryBind by slig (How-to for Nabi 2 by Clarkiss). Root External 2 Internal SD swaps the two. DirectoryBind causes apps to install their extra data to sdcard2.
The first thing to do when you've got a failure to install an app due to insufficient space is to check the device's storage. Get there by accessing Android's Settings, Storage, and when the graph and list come up on the right, touch Apps. You can sort by app size or by alphabetical. Sort by size and the list will show which apps are taking the most space. Another way to get to the same place is via Android's Settings, Apps, and select All at the top.
A. Easiest is removing unwanted demos and preinstalled apps. Touch the name of the app and select Uninstall. I am unsure if this will require root or not. I didn't try while still unrooted and don't know if some apps are locked in by Fuhu.
B. My first space hog was actually the Gallery. One of the first things we do after getting recovery and root on the Nabi 2 is to install GApps. In doing so, Google's Gallery replaces Fuhu's. I have uploaded many Picasa albums over time and, using my Google account on my son's Nabi 2, syncronized and downloaded 300 MB onto the internal storage.
Unsync and clear Google Gallery:
1. Open Android's Settings, Accounts & sync, [Your Google Account], Uncheck Sync Google Photos
2. Settings, Storage, Apps (All), Gallery, Force Stop, Clear Data
3. Reboot
After rebooting, the downloaded albums and photos Google had sync'd will be gone, freeing up precious internal space.
Update: More picture/video space hogging was found in /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails There were two thumbnail files adding up to 277MB hiding out.
C. Having multiple rooted android devices, one of the first things I set up after rooting is Titanium Backup (TB). Normally, TB saves its backed up files to sdcard. But, because sdcard is the Nabi 2's space constricted internal storage, this causes a problem quickly. The solution is to change TB's backup storage location. This can save hundreds of MBs. This was the first problem I tackled, so I don't remember how much
1. In Titanium Backup, open Preferences, Backup storage location
2. Change the default location from /mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup to /mnt/sdcard[BOLD]2[/BOLD]/TitaniumBackup
TB will handle copying your contents from the old directory to the new one.
D. My next surprise space hog was cloud storage app Box. Hogging a respectable 138 MB of files apparently sync'd/cached, this one was easy to clear.
1. In Box, open Settings, and touch Clear Cache under the Folder Activity heading.
These are basic, simple, and temporary tips which will only free a little more space to allow installation of that one last app you mean to get on your Nabi 2. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome.
I'm hoping that as the Nabi community matures and XDA grants us our own subforum (hint: lets do our best to stoke more Nabi 2 threads), that solutions are created to truly fix the lack of space to make this device pain free and open up its true potential.

I finally got it to work at boot and looked like everything was ok. Watched as I added apps and such, seemed that 80% of everything still installed to original Internal storage. Only real change was anything I downloaded went straight on micro sdcard. I also gave up.
Despite me using the external2internal app and it LOOKING like it was all swapped in the settings under data, the apps still all seem to go on the original tiny internal sd card and also when you use settings to look at installed apps, the free space it quotes tallies with the internal card, not the swapped-large-external card.
I can only assume something has gone a bit wrong in the settings of the app.
I dont understand how the nabi2 settings sees huge space under "storage" but tiny space under "apps" its as if the external2internal app has only swapped the two cards for "some" of the nabi's setup/brain
Any ideas please?
I was never able to get Ext2Int working properly so I abandoned that route.
Something that does work for me is [APP][ROOT] FolderMount - Link folders from internal SD to external to free space. It doesn't swap the internal for external outright, but does allow you to move specific data hogs to sdcard2. I still need to do a little walk through on it. . .
FM can move files from the original location to the destination of your choice if the files don't require root permissions. If they do, you have to move the files using a root file explorer of your choice.
FM will not work for moving apps due to its inherent time delay before actually changing the link to the new location. It's 30 seconds to 3 minutes after boot.

Thanks very much, Im not sure if that would work for me as most of my little boys apps are pretty small in size, most around the 20mb mark, with a few being 100mb so its not the big games or datahogs thats a problem, its the sheer weight of numbers of how many of these small apps he has installed.
So Im not sure if FM would actually be able to move any of his apps over to the external and actually work.
Even though he has so many apps, selective removing isnt a solution as he remembers them all. He is autistic trust me he remembers them hehe
Thanks and all help is appreciated.

DiskUsage is a good app to visually find large data stores. On my phone, I found Amazon caching all of the apps it had downloaded but I cancelled the installation on, over 1.5 GB! I don't use Amazon the same way on the Nabi though.

Thanks I had a look at diskusage but honestly I am so noobish that I couldnt quite tell exactly what it was explaining to me.
Looking on things like data or apps there were things listed that almost seemed twice and also some noted as apk's and I wasnt sure if this was the game itself, of if it was the apk file that installed the game and the tablet is storing the apk's as well as the installed games.
As a beginer at this kind of thing, its quite hard to get your head around it all.
And we have now officially run out of space and trying to magane through as best we can.
Thanks for the suggestion
Alex
The actual APKs, not good to move with FolderMount. But, if there's a bit of data in /data/data, /data/obb, /android, FolderMount can move that to your external storage, freeing space for more apps. At least you looked into it. My son has a couple apps that take 100s of MBs of data. That makes freeing space easy.

Dont think Ive seen the obb folder...
When I plug the nabi into the PC lead and it pops up like an SD drive on my PC, there does seem to be a lot of folders that people mention that I dont seem to be able to see. Possibly like a kind of hidden folder? Also the size of the SD looked at through the PC always shows as much smaller than it is.
So Im really thinking that there is a chunk of the internal-sd card, or internal memory, that is hidden from the basic pc cable connection. Is that right and if-so how am I able to see that area to be able to back it up and/or be able to mess with it?
Thanks
Alex
I don't have a Nabi 2 anymore but have any of you used the app Link2sd? I've been using it on another 4 gig device and works really well. You have not split your micro sdcard into 2 partitions. Link2sd uses the second partition and you use the first as your micro sdcard. When you click Link app to SD, it moves it, then open app and see if it runs OK. If not you'll have to click move to SD to put it back so it will work.

Yes. That and FolderMount are what keep my son's Nabi functional.
A 2 GB partition was a bit small for me though. For anyone that goes that route and had a large SD (64 GB), give the Link2SD partition at least 3 GB. I had to start over after doing it the first time.
Or, count and calculate the apps you mean to move them add extra space for future expansion. That'd be the smart way
Sent from my SCH-I545 Dev Edition using Tapatalk 2
Im really dumb on these things and am terrified of busting my sons nabi (he relies upon it so much now).
So does this move the whole app, or just the data bits of the app? I heard that the bigger apps that are heavy on data move well, but the smaller apps that are mostly just the apk dont always move. Almost all my sons apps are the small kind. So Im not sure if this will still work.
Also, we hardly have anything at all to put on our external sd, we only bought it because we thought we could get apps on it. So is there any reason not to put a huge partition on the sd for the program? Our sd is 32gb, so I guess formats at about 28gb, so I was thinking of having the partition 25gb
Thanks for all the thoughts and help people.
PS: Is foldermount necessary as well? Or can I just try this with Link2SD? Im nervous enough about trying to learn one new software but integrating two at the same time concerns me somewhat.
Thanks
Alex
Some thoughts.
Honestly, from my experience with both, do Link to SD with a respectable partition. Something big enough to grow into, maybe 5 GB. Or, 10 since you say you have a lot of external SD space, but that is surely overkill since the apps data will burst your internal before the apps exceed 10 GB.
That allows you to move the largest apps to the external. Their data will still be on the internal though. That will be your next headache.
I find my FolderMount pairs frequently unpinned and I have to log into Daddy mode and re-enable them. I think that would not be good for you, alexbobspoons. When the FolderMount pairs are not enabled, some of the larger data apps (Mini Motor or My First Trainz Set) will download their data again when my son tries to play them (to internal since the pair is not active). My four year old will tell me now so I can straighten it out. I use FolderMount to move the entire /sdcard/android/data and /sdcard/android/obb folders to the external.
But, like I said, focus on Link to SD and that should free some storage pretty well. I found it a bit more difficult than FolderMount. Also, I am unsure how Link to SD plays into making a nandroid, if it's all copied and restored properly. I haven't really tried that yet.
Update: And again, FolderMount was not linking my pairs this morning. I haven't tried to ask for help on that issue since the Nabi's storage is all funked up by default. FolderMount had an update so I will see if that changes anything. Also of note, I haven't upgraded to the latest Nabi update either.
While I was in there, I checked that I used all 2 GB I alloted for Link to SD (I should have done at least 4 GB) on the external. FolderMount has about 7 GB on the external.

Am I right in thinking that most apps are composed of just two components, one component being the apk itself (which can be moved to external using link2sd), the other being the data (which can be moved to external using foldermount).
Is this right??
If-so, then IF I am using the disk-usage app correctly, then almost all of my sons apps are in the apk bracket with hardly any usage on the data aspect.
So if this is the case, then I wouldnt much need to use foldermount, and would simply need a huge partition on the external SD to have all the apps (apk's?) moved to. If that is the case, then I dont think I would bust the nabi2's internal memory with the data as theres hardly any of it.
Am I then right in thinking that after moving all the stuff via link2sd that my internal memory would be almost all empty, and all I need to do in future is 1: Buy new app and download, 2:Link2sd the new app, 3:Hand tablet back to son and all done.
Am I understanding it all correctly so-far please?
Thanks
Alex
PS: You mention nandriod.... whats nandroid?? Thanks.
Yes. apks are the apps. You've got the idea.
A nandroid is a term used for the backup image made while in custom recovery (TWRP on our Nabi 2s). It's like ghosting your PC. If you mess up after, you typically can restore that backup nandroid and make it like nothing ever happened.
I'm guessing the apps moved with Link to SD will not exist when the external SD is ejected. And, not backed up in the nandroid.
Ok thanks for that.
Well I have a spare 32gb sd card so my plan is:
1: Backup the nabi using twerp onto my existing sd card
2: format and prepare new sd card
3: remove ext2sd app in case it conflicts
4: put new sd card into nabi
5: Install link2sd
6: attempt to move apps over onto the external sd and see what happens
hopefully, the internal memory should get nice and empty, while the external memory slowly fills with the other stuff.
Then if it works, I can download all his missing apps and move each one to external sd
Fingers crossed.
Cheers
Alex

Alex,
Were you met with success? I'd like to clear out my daughter's Nabi 2, but I'll go your route if it worked. Also, has anyone found a way to save pictures or videos to the CD card by default?
My Verizon Note 2 came with a glaring bad pixel and an entire line on the screen that went bad. I just got my RMA replacement unit.
I'm not rooted - I didn't want to mess around knowing I'd be returning it. So, neither Titanium Backup nor nandroid backup is available. I didn't move any apps to the external SD card, though for some apps I set the destination for new files to the external card when the default was internal.
What is the best procedure to migrate from old unit to new one? My thought was:
- Save configs for any app that allows you to save a config (e.g. Touchdown)
- Email Apps will re-sync with the servers (e.g. Touchdown, K-9)
- Most apps just re-install from Google play
- Drag and drop files on internal SD card to desktop (Windows)
- Anything on removable SD card will be fine.
Issues I'm wondering about:
- Dropbox. Should I uninstall and reinstall and let it all re-sync?
- Android settings - volume, ring tones, brightness, etc. - is there a file that saves all that? Will they get picked up if I copy a few directories from the internal storage back from Window? If so, what are those directories or files?
- Will there be hidden files on the internal storage that I need that won't be copied to Windows by drag & drop? Is there a way to save them?
- What am I missing? Anything else I should worry about? It seems simple enough, but having moved between platforms many times, there is always something that can go wrong.
Many thanks in advance for the help. I can't imagine I'm the only one with a defective unit, so hopefully this will help the next noob.
To be honest I'm sure there is a way to do what you are asking. Other than s note things which can be easily found with access to the internal storage.... For settings and whatnot I recommend just starting over it won't take that long and it is part of the fun of starting over
The reason I recommend starring over is it is easy to get way to complicated and messy trying to move things like that. I would only move app data that is vital. Good luck with your move.

Thanks, it was good advice. I was able to export and import my tasker profiles (those would have been painful to re-create), and for everything else I just did a side-by-side comparison with the old unit. Time consuming, but effective.
