3G only? - G2 General

is it possible to set the phone on 3G only?

In network setting you have the option to change network mode.

3G is not available on the menu?

The only available option is global, LTE/CDMA, GSM/UMTS. I can't find WCDMA

Use GSM/UMTS.

So u'r using network locked handset.u won't get 3G without unlocking u'r phone.......

Assuming you have the VS980, setting it to "Global" will cause your phone to only pick up 3G.

If I don't have 4G my phone drops down to 3G. but the problem when i go to a crowded area with good 4G signal my phone will not drop to 3G. so I'm stuck with 4G with 0.10Mbps speeds. so i wanted to use verizon 3G at least I will get 2Mbps

LTE will work on both modes.Global would switch depending on the sim card inserted.If GSM/UMTS is selected, select Network operators from the SETTINGS section,Search networks .if network found select either manually or automatically...
then go back-select network mode from GSM/UMTS menu..hope this will help......

i got that problem too..
it depends of the bands that your ROM had.
In my case, I have got a g2 ls980 from sprint and the bands are different that here in Portugal...
So I´m stucked without LTE.
Any help?

Just tried out the *#*#4636#*#* LTE only setting and now I have 4 bars of LTE. If I switch it back to the default setting it goes right back to 4 bars of 3G. WTF LG? I thought my provider was bad.

As far as I know, some providers block this menu and other hidden menus.
Maybe you can find the setting in one of these menus: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523252
I can't try them out to find the right one for obvious reasons

The funny thing is that in the software in the S LTE can be enabled, but there is no LTE hardware.
Type *#*#4636#*#* then select phone info scroll down and where is says (on my phone) wcdma preferred you can select the radio bands incl LTE.
When i set my phone to LTE preferred nothing happens and i stil have wcdma reception

The modem is restricted so you can't change the bands. It's set to switch to the best signal.
The idea of using 2G to save battery consumption is a wives tale. There isn't any difference anymore.
I would hope that's the only reason to want to switch to 2G!
But yeah, with current technology 3G/4G is no longer a battery killer like it once was. Especially on our state of the art awesome Galaxy Notes!
I do not agree with this entirely, because at college I only get 2g all the time! ANd my battery never gets below 75% when I am home it bounces from 3g/4g and even sometimes to 2g I live in a weird area lol...And my battery gets down to 30-35% when I am home doing the same things.....
The modem in the phone is on or off, and it doesn't downshift if it has to run on a lower band. It's like a light bulb -- on or off.
Don't take my word for it, google the topic and you can read what the engineers say.
You can't do the same things with 2G and 4G networks (at least not without pulling your hair out).
I must disagree with you, 2G and 4G switch is available in international GNote. So there is a way to swtch it. And if i am in zone of low 3/4G signal zone, it always switch to 2-3-4 G, so it also make the battery drain faster. In HOX AT&T there is a command you can dial some code and get into menu for switching Bands. There should be somthing like this in Note also.
There is a dial code for this modem but it is a restricted menu. You can't make a selection on it.

To get the option, you would need Samsung modem software and be able to edit the file and unrestrict the band selector. That is something that has never been leaked, unfortunately.

That's actually a solution for this OP who wants 2G on Straight Talk network. If he follows your instructions, because of the hardware, all he will be able to get is EDGE connection for data.

Reboot the phone and let the phone register on the network. The APN should be in the phone database. In case its not, which would be impossible with a stock rom, you can enter it, and be sure to SAVE it.
Right now I'm using the phone apn I have rebooted the phone many times I actually would like to know when I put it to only lyrics in the phone info menu it still shows as hspa

HSPA = 3G/4G Kind of strongest signal available.
On TouchWiz firmware:
E=2g
3g=3g
4g=hspa
4g lte= lte the strongest signal.
Aosp:
E=2g
3g=3g
H=hspa
4g= lte

ATT LTE?

I have recently had this phone come into my possession, and had put in my ATT Sim to see if it would work. After switching to global mode and adding an APN, it connected. The only thing is it refuses to connect to LTE. Is it possible to run ATT LTE on the Verizon version? It runs the MK2 software.

If you're in an area where AT&T is pushing out AWS band 4, you'll get LTE. That's because the band is compatible with the AWS bands that VZ uses. If not, you'll get HSPA+ (or worse).

What are you asking? T-Mobile primary network is EDGE, then HSPA, then LTE. If you want to use only HSPA, you can go to settings>mobile networks>network mode. WCDMA only

Sorry, I'm coming from ATT where we had to do weird things to unlock HSPA. My issue is I'm on EDGE more than anything and things don't even load on EDGE. I remember being stuck on E sometimes on ATT, but unlocking HSPA fixed that.
Sent from my Galaxy S5 using Tapatalk
There's no unlocking that Ive ever heard of. It sounds like you just get poor reception. Probably an area that doesn't get 4g or Lte. Check Tmobile coverage map.
Sent from my SM-G900T using xda app-developers app
Yeah, my guess is coverage too. Do go in and check that option that they listed above for your network type. In your situation I would try setting it to WCDMA Only - this will FORCE it to connect to 4G (HSPA+) and if you have no signal for 4g you will have 0 bars so it is a good test to see how that signal is in your area aside from the network map.
You will only be able to use T-Mobile HSPA+ if you are using a T-Mobile branded S5. The AT&T S5 does not support the 1700 AWS band from T-Mobile so you will not be able to get it and will only have access to 2G/3G/4G and LTE (no 4G+)

T-Mobile rural coverage is quite poor in most areas, however they've committed to modernizing their rural areas now that they've got the major centers but it might take a year or better to get it all done. I'm planning to go to at&t in great meantime now that their rates have come down. I'm stuck in 2g land at home and work here
