Z ultra is being discontinued - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hey guys, I work in Virgin media and have phones4u next door.
I was speaking to someone and they said its on sale at the minute because its being discontinued. Apparently people come back saying all the xperia line are terrible. I've had nothing but good news from the people who buy the ones we sell.
But yes, they are cheap at the moment. Around £300 for unlocked. Or £27.99 on contract.
I find it hard that its so bad Sony are discontinuing one of there phones, maybe they will unveil a new ultra?
This also means no more support. I reckon an update for 4.4.3 will come out. Maybe 1 extra update after that and I'll be dead
What a shame.

No it won't be discontinued that fast. the fact that GPe version exists and that in Japan, there are additional version of Z Ultras that just have been announced 2-3 months ago, should not end this mighty of a phone that quick. But if we're talking for the next Z2 Ultra might be pushed early, that should be the reason.
In the mean time, Sony should stick with 18 month of policy for at least their Z branded Xperias. heck even the original Xperia Z might taste KitKat after all, which for the Z Ultra should be updated at least until the end of year 2014.

Glad i got one when i did then. loved every minute of ownership and dont see that changing anytime soon.

I highly doubt that Sony is discontinuing it. It's more plausible that Phones4U is getting rid of it, and therefore having the sale. They are probably waiting for the Z2 Ultra.

Perhaps, I wouldn't of thought Sony would make another Ultra, it doesn't seem to have sold well at all, and you can make the phone any bigger without it being a tablet, and you couldn't make it smaller because what's the point.
It seems phones4u and EE are not doing it anymore, haven't checked other carries

I'm sure there will be another version, just look at the large phones in Asia.
I probably wont be getting the Z2 Ultra - cant see the point in upgrading every year, lets see what the Z3 ultra brings to the table:laugh:

Flyer release date: 9th May

So it looks like the Flyer will be released on 9th May. This was mentioned in Paul Obrien / tracyandmatt in their live blog from the HTC London event.
Damnit I just sold my Galaxy Tab so guess I'm tabless for a few weeks yet.
Edit: countdown timer is here
http://www.htcflyerstore.com/uk/p_htcflyer.aspx
Edit 2: SIM free stock may be delayed
This came from Clove Technology:
We had word from HTC that the date may slip due to certain UK retailers obtaining an exclusive resulting in SIM free stock being pushed back. At the moment we are waiting on a new confirmed release date for SIM free stock.

Is that a global release date? When do you think Best Buy will release it in the states?
May 9 is the UK release date. I think the Flyer is to be sold in the US by Sprint as the Evo View which I think was scheduled to be released in June and is supposed ro ship with Honeycomb
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
ive seen may 3rd everywhere though (amazon ect...)
but im guessing that best buy will get it about the same time as UK as they said spring, but then again sprint may have a privilege agreement with htc for exclusivity so best buy might even be after june :/
Now this really annoys me. When I preordered the HTC Desire, stock was delayed because (after announcing a release date), HTC diverted stock to the carriers who don't take pre-orders and will sell to the first person in the door. They certainly don't ship overseas.
It seems the same thing will happen with the HTC Flyer. This was Clove Technologys response to my question about why the ETA on their site changed from "Mid May" to "TBC:

Im very tempted to just go get a Xoom (or something) now - not only because HTC are dicking us around, but mainly because I sold my Galaxy Tab a couple of weeks ago, "knowing" that the Flyer was not too far away. I'm also getting married in June so I'll be away for a while.
I got the same email and I am now seriously thinking to get the new Samsung tablet instead.
While there was huge demand for the Desire at the time, that does not seem to be the case for the Flyer this time and I am not particularly impressed by the way HTC is playing this one...
I'm also going to go abroad soon and I don't want to be in a situation where I have to manage shipping date and location to avoid the risk of the tablet being delivered while I am away...
Looks like I am just about to cancel my pre-order!!!
I think this news just makes my decision easier to wait for the larger tablets coming this summer, i dont need mine immediately, and a larger screen would suit me better, hopefully less hassle with those then, but i wont switch to another brand as i dont believe there's a better experience than sense

I just did. I slept on it and came to the conclusion that I can't afford to risk it slipping any further. I also don't like the way HTC have handled it. Even their own "Flyer store" site says May 9 and only went live a few days ago.
I am a huge HTC fan and I have regretfully just ordered the Galaxy Tab 10.1 which will be shipped in about a week.
I have a homeless SIM card with a 10Gb/month data plan which is desperate for a new home
Chances are the new Galaxy Tab will be on ebay within a couple of months andd replaced with (hopefully) something more like the Flyer.

Pre-order cancelled... Can't be bothered waiting for HTC to sort its business... Given the price with online retailer are identical to the one you'd get on the street in the UK, I can't see the point of this exclusivity deal. Bad move on your part, boys.

16GB WiFi only if I remember well. I would assume a 32GB 3G would fetch $699... But then they won't get that, ever...
Ye true, but still has micro SD as well, nd I don't mind the non 3g, as I live in Norway so a us data plan is useless to me and getting us stuff with no contract is near impossible

That doesn't even include the pen which is ANOTHER $50
What market is this aimed at? CEO multi billionaires?
It looks like a great device, and i could use the scribe function 50 times a day, but the price is laughable.
Where has it said it doesn't come with pen? And I've heard rumors that that is just best-buy pre-order not actual stopped pick up

I asked both bestbuy and pcworld and they both said it was available separately
That was two weeks ago when the price was all rumour and i was still thinking of buying one.
The secondhand market could be worth looking, i would think the price is going to drop like a stone.
Waiting for release at my country...
From the video I have seen the Best Buy order comes with the pen and the Sprint version does not.
I think it would be extremely bad form for HTC to sell the pen separately. This tablet is already behind the game in screen (not IPS)/2.4 (not 3.0)/processor performance (not dual core). They will surely kill it if they charge extra for the pen.
I have my pre order with bestbuy but I may cancel it if the pen is not in the box when I go to buy it.
What is the strategy in selling it without pen? And is this pre-order, pick-up or both?

UK versions seem to include the Scribe pen and most large retailers are saying availability on 17 May.

Coming to USA?

Thus tablet looks very promising, but there isn't a lot of info out there on it. I currently have a nexus 7, but am looking at getting a 10". When is the z2 coming to the US and at what price? Am I the only one exited about this?

Not entirely sure if it'll come with a carrier. But the wifi version will probably be available just like the Tablet Z was. Both in Sony Stores and in resellers like Amazon, Best Buy, etc...
Best guess is it'll run $499 for a wifi 16Gb just like the Tablet Z did, and $599 for a 32Gb model. Mobile connectivity versions a bit higher, depending on if you buy them straight up or on a contract.
Last I heard indicated either late April or early May for release in the US. Probably May is more likely I bet.
The cellular model looks like Sony made one model with every band in it.
So you could import and will work on Att and T-mobile.
It even has 1700/2100 band for t-mobile HSPA

Wow! I'm not here to bash, or promote, any particular retailer. I'm just a guy who wants to buy one of these and am frustrated that Sony isn't selling them here the U.S. (Similar story with the Z1C phone which I ended up buying from the U.K.)
But ... Did you really pay $1500 at Tropical Mobile (price I see on eBay) for a device which retails around the world for $5-600?
If so, my hat's off to you for being bold and decisive. I'm still waiting, hoping for a good option from the U.K. or from Sony USA. The price from the U.K., when available, is forecast at about $590 with support from Sony UK and a two year warranty. There are apparently reputable U.S. eBay sellers offering no-support Europe versions for $510. The latter are promised to already be through customs and ready to ship; what I read at Tropical Mobile is ambiguous about where they actually are and if there might still be customs issues.

I got the WIFI+LTE version from Tropical on Ebay.
I purchased about 10 days ago and the price for the wifi+lte version was $690
I see he just recently raised the price to over $1,000
Mine came from Singapore. Left Singapore and was at JFK and cleared customs the next day. No problems at all
Mine left Singapore too. I paid $560. It wasn't $1000 or so like u said at that time. So no need to rage just simple ask...

Thanks for both answers. That all seems much more reasonable. The big question I struggle with on any of these imports is warranty. Sony typically warrants their products for two years (sometimes with an offer of a 3rd year for an extra penny). I may never need it, but I hate to give it up. Did you get any kind of warranty?

When I was buying from tropical mobile on eBay, the description said 1 year manufacturer warranty. So I guess it doesn't matter where you bought it, Sony has the tab serial, identity, they would automatically cover you with 1 year warranty. Idk. That's my guess...

I wouldn't assume that means anything. They may or may not be an authorized reseller, but if you take the device to Sony's repair facilities in another country, they may not cover it.
Sony USA for example has their own repair network. Their repair centers may not even have access to software or hardware for devices that aren't officially sold in the US market.
I'm not saying that the warranty is void, but unless you confirm it's valid with Sony and will be covered in your home country, I would not assume. I've got a lot of friends in the Philippines and they deal with that stuff all the time with items they have friends ship to them from the states. To the point where sometimes they ship items back to us for us to send in for repair, since the item is only covered under warranty in the US since that's where it was purchased. Similar circumstances may prove out for these.
That said, the prices are surprising. The SGP311 sold for $499 here in the states and I'd assumed the new Z2 Tablet 16GB wifi counterpart would sell for similar. I can buy that SGP511 model for $520-550 on Ebay. Even the LTE model is readily available in 16GB for $629. The cheapest I saw the TMobile complaint LTE Tablet Z was for about $650 in the states, without a subsidy.
I'm half tempted to buy a white 16GB LTE SGP521 just because I'm almost afraid prices will go up when the US model is available.
I may be overly pessimistic and completely wrong, but I both assume and expect that if I self-import an offshore Sony product that Sony USA week disavow any responsibility for it. Best case is that I would have to send it back to the country of export.

I was millimeters away from ordering the same model from the same seller - and may still. They were responsive to my inquiries and seemed like they would be reliable. They honestly answered my warranty question, which (to my shame) scared me away, or at least caused me pause. I'm not sure from your post... have you received it? Since they offered two-day delivery, I guessed they had the product in the U.S.A. already, which made me more comfortable about it not having to get through customs. How long did it take to arrive? It's supposed to have a U.S. plug; is it a satisfactory charger? Anyway, congratulations.

Z2 Price drop

Hi guys, I am very much looking forward to sell my HTC One and get an Xperia Z2. I was just waiting till the price of the xperia z2 drops a little bit more. Right now on ebay and amazon is about $500.
Based on your experience with previous phones, Do you guys think it will drop even more once the z3 gets actually released in the U.S? :fingers-crossed:
Thanks :highfive:

[Q] when do you think..

The z2 will be discontinued/no longer offered?
I have 2 (first one got a cracked screen, which sony will be replacing and i will be selling it).
The second one ive had no issues with but i have a carrier insurance (150 deductible) that allows me to get it replaced if its broken, stolen, etc..
My buddy used his warranty on his z1 shortly after z2 came out and they gave him the z2 in replacement.
Imo for 150 it seems like a good upgrade? Think theyll stop selling z2 soon?
18 months after release unless the device shows popularity then 24 months
Its been 6/7 months from release

Are you planning to get your phone stollen at some point? Don't let your insurance company know about it... just joking.
I don't believe Z2 will be discontunued soon, as I've just read that Sony is gonna change their six month flagship ship launch, starting with the z4 probably during Q1 of 2015...

I can say that it is much cheaper now, than before...
I say I like it, and bought it at 18670..
from your POV though, it sucks, right?
I say I bought it at ~700 euros (~49K rupees), with the SmartWatch 2 included, and I thought it was the right price for the whole package.
I tell you more, I would have done it without the bonus of the watch as well.
Today is all about upgrades, you can't buy a phone/tablet/tv/pc/laptop and expect the company you bought it from to stick its head under the sand and wait for you to have the need for another device to upgrade its line of products.
I bought it on day one, for a premium price, for what I thought (and it was, and it still is) was a premium device.
I was OK with the price then, and it served me perfectly for this year or so.
Now it's 250 euros, so what?
Go buy a BMW M5 for 100K and resell it the year after, you'll see like half of your cash go down the toilet...
Bottom line, if Sony pleases us with another Ultra, I'll go with it.
If not, I may but another one for the price of a coffee just to keep a spare one.
