With the AT&T version and htcdev website, what all will unlocking the phone provide compared to rooting a Samsung device

Once you follow the steps on the site its very similar to a nexus when you unlock it via fastboot. Its way easier than a Samsung device IMO

Unlocking the bootloader is necessary, but not sufficient, to root the device AFAIK. First, you unlock the bootloader; this allows you to boot a custom recovery like TWRP, which allows you to do a number of things like take backups, edit files (including build.prop), and install extra software, including the stuff you need to get root.
You don't have to flash the recovery if you don't want to, you can just fastboot it from your PC when you want to use it. You also don't need to root just to edit build.prop, you can do that from recovery. But you must unlock the bootloader either way.

Thanks for further clarification. So what is needed to flash custom roms? is that where s-on and s-off comes into play?
For better yet what all what I need to do to get root, run xposed modules and flash some of the custom ROMs that are out there already? Not really interested in kernels I have normally always ran stock kernel on my other phones
Sent from my GT-N7105 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I don't think you need S-OFF just to flash a custom ROM. You should be able to simply do that from recovery.
To put another way, in recovery there will be an option like "Install from ZIP file." There's a very small ZIP file that would just give you root access in the existing, stock ROM or it could be a much larger ZIP file that contains an entire custom ROM.
Note that almost all custom ROMs come with root access baked in, and you don't need to root the stock ROM if you're just going to install a custom one anyway.
If you don't have the recovery yet, it's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2698134

I already Unlocked my HTC Rezound but I am not able to root it using the oneclickroot method. i get Fail and error messages but it tell me it was successfully rooted. No Super user app.
Can anyone Help me with this? Im I missing something? doing anything wrong?
Thanks!
You must have the update then. OneClick root doesn't work any more.
Just download and flash Amon Ra in fastboot, then go to the developer menu in that and install su. Then I believe you need to update it from the Market. The you'll be rooted and ready to flash a custom ROM.
To flash Amon Ra, just put in in the same folder you used for the unlocking and use the following command:
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Also, if you are planning on flashing an ICS ROM you might want to use v3.10. Otherwise go with the latest which I think is still v3.14.
Thanks, that worked.

You do know that it is recommended to not use clockworkmod on the Rezound and to use Amon Ra instead right? Even a post above your suggested doing that.
i did the update too cause i just bought the damn phone.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If you're running into trouble unlocking using regawmod method, try going to HTC dev site and doing the unlock bootloader process that way manually. I was running into the same thing until yesterday when I did that method. If you get unlock, just install twrp recovery using goomanager app (settings, then run/install openscript) and then flash supersu

Yeah I eventually got it. Regawmod wouldn't reboot the phone into bootloader although it said it did. I manually put it in to bootloader,
then it would continue, only to stop at installing root. I copied the root file to sd, then went into recovery and installed that way.
PITA!

HTC Dumlock Instructions:
Install the build of TWRP using your method of choice, but you must actually flash TWRP to recovery. No fastboot booting it. We need it in recovery so that this build of TWRP will be flashed to your boot. This new build of TWRP has features in it to easily restore your original boot.
Reboot into recovery.
Make a backup of your phone.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock. (If you don't see HTC Dumlock then you need to remove any custom TWRP theme that you might be using.)
Tap Install HTC Dumlock. This will install the app and binaries needed to make everything work nicely.
Reboot your device.
Find and open the HTC Dumlock app.
If/when prompted, give the app root (SuperUser) permissions.
Tap the Execute HTC Dumlock button.
Wait patiently for a couple of minutes. It takes a little while.
If your device doesn't reboot automatically, reboot it manually. Reboot it normally. DO NOT reboot it to recovery.
You should now be in your recovery, but your recovery is flashed into boot.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock.
Tap Restore Original Boot.
Use your recovery like normal. Flash a new kernel. Restore a backup with a different kernel. Do whatever you please!
Consider donating!
Note, you must repeat steps 8 through 17 EVERY TIME you need to flash boot.
Installation:
Unlock bootloader at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Make sure fastboot is unchecked in power options and turn phone completely off
Boot into HBOOT then Fastboot
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot erase cache"
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"

Go unlock your bootloader. Then inside of TWRP it should detect that your not rooted and automatically root . If it doesn't prompt you. There are two links in the OP that you flash in recovery that will give you root.

Any idea what's on it now? Check the rom info in Settings, About Phone.
Also power it off, pull the battery, put it back in and turn the phone back on while holding Volume down, that'll get you the bootloader. See what version you have and if it's s-on or s-off.
From there you can select Recovery on the menu and boot into it, see what recovery you have.
Let us know and we can go from there.

You are already unlocked and have Amon Ra recovery installed, the "hard" stuff is done (actually it's not hard), and FYI you are S-ON... You are pretty good to go for any ICS based ROM. If you want to move into JellyBean or KitKat based ROMs you should switch to TWRP or CWM Recovery. Other than that, your good to go.
Ok, thanks a bunch! Ive done tons of reading about flashing roms and am still a little weary about the actual process. Ive read that a computer is needed in some cases but in others people are switching roms right from their phone- whats the safest or correct way to do it?

Although there are ways around it (that I don't recommend, mind you) the rule of thumb is based on whether you are S-ON or S-OFF...
When S-ON, a computer has to be involved so that the boot.img can be loaded... you must either: A) flash the boot.img manually with fastboot after flashing the ROM in recovery, or B) boot the recovery image file with fastboot and flash the ROM file
When S-OFF, no computer is required, all partitions of the phone are writable by recovery directly.

Don't forget you can use the phone (or a computer) to pack the boot.img into a PH98IMG.zip. As long as it boots, that is.
Hi All,
I am also new at rooting the Rezound and I'm having trouble. I did quite a bit of reading and followed the instructions here: theunlockr.com/2012/08/24/how-to-root-the-htc-rezound-video/
Apparently this was for an older version because I can't install ClockworkMod Recovery ("an error occurred ..."). I read that getting a backup of ClockworkMod Recovery was the best thing to do before installing any ROMs. Is that really necessary? It seems like I could always find an RUU on this site and flash back to ICS if I wanted to right?
Can some one point me in the right direction for what I should do next? Basically all I want to do is flash a ROM on my Rezound that will enable me to use it as a wall controller for my home automation system. So, ideally I'd like to remove the swipe to unlock feature (just be able to press the power button to get to the home screen) and to be able to force a nightly reboot with Tasker and remove as much bloatware as possible. This device is connected to my home network through wifi only. Any ideas what the best ROM would be for that?
By the way my recovery screen looks like undeadking's. I have S-On.
Thanks!

Easiest way to get where you want is to HTC unlock if not already done,
S-0ff with RumRunner, then follow this thread with all its great stuff:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509770
You will end up with newest radios that are best for newer stock and custom roms.
There are several daily-user type custom roms mentioned in Development.
After you read a little about each, you'll know what you want to try first.
I like the custom Sense roms for best battery life.

There are ways using terminal emulator with an s-on device alongside using a proper busybox installation to flash without using a pc and no fastboot/hboot access is needed. flashing a boot.img while in rom, rebooting to recovery and finish installing the matching rom by flashing its zip.

the one big issue you need to worry about while being s-on is if you soft brick while s-on there is absolutely almost no fix...with s-off you con ruu.exe to safely restore your phone which you cannot do while s-on....if you plan on flashing custom roms alot than i HIGHLY suggest going s-off or you'll regret not doing so when that time comes

First unlock bootloader from htc dev, then get root with iroot, then installed rom manager to install cwm recovery, then flash tow different rom and is the same, the phone just show htc.
So I think it is because I have s-on still, but I don't find a way to do it if I cannot enter to the OS

After all these years and hundreds of people asking the same question, sometimes I can't believe this still comes up... but I will answer it again. The issue is that when you are S-ON the boot partition is not writable by recovery under normal conditions, essentially you flash a ROM but are not getting the matching kernel. You can't S-OFF without a bootable phone, kind of a double edged sword here but that's the unfortunate reality. The good news is, we can likely get it working.
The Rezound, and most HTC devices, need to have the boot image flashed separately via fastboot if you are S-ON, this can be achieved in two ways for the less experienced user... but both REQUIRE a PC with a USB port, correct drivers, and ADB/Fastboot installed, it will also require a copy of the ROM ZIP on your computer, and a copy of the recovery IMG file (I highly recommend TWRP).
The first method is to boot (not flash) recovery via fastboot and flash the ROM, when this is done the boot partition is writable by recovery because the phone thinks it is booting a boot image (not a recovery image) so the boot image has to be able to write to itself. Using this method you just need the recovery image file on your PC with the above mentioned pre-requisites, and you boot the phone into the bootloader and start Fastboot, now connect the USB and open a command window and enter:
fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.8.4.0-vigor.img
openrecovery-twrp-2.8.4.0-vigor.img should be the name of the recovery file you are using, you will see a little green bar on the side of the screen for a moment, then recovery will appear, perform normal wipes and flash the ROM like any other device, reboot, give it a good 15 minutes and you should be good to go. This method is NOT the same as starting recovery from the phone itself.
The second method updates the boot partition directly via fastboot, you need to extract the boot.img file from the ROM ZIP file and place it on your PC... now boot the phone into the bootloader and start Fastboot, connect the USB and open a command window and enter:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
This will write the correct boot partition to the phone. Reboot and give it a solid 15 minutes and it should be come up.
Now, the issue with S-OFF? See http://rumrunner.us/ after the phone is working again.
Sorry because I didn't read the forum or I didn't understand.
Now I understand right
I installed a stock rom and the phone is nice, now I can make s-off.

Not exactly... Rumrunner requires an unsecure kernel, so you have to flash to a custom ROM or use a custom Sense kernel, you could try to S-off the old fashioned way, via Juopunutbear, Linux, and use the wire trick, but that is the only way under a stock ROM.
I Decided leave the phone stock Until it fails again. The HTCs is the MOST Difficult brand.
Thanks

Meh... Up to you, its like anything else, After you do it a couple times it's no big deal. Just glad you for it working.
And no, it's hardly the most difficult at all, TBH, HTC is quite good by comparison to many manufacturers... You have obviously never owned a Casio smartphone.
