TWRP Asking for password - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey all, I'm trying to help a friend. He has Beanstalk installed with the partitions. Things have been working great. Today the phone rebooted and went to recovery, asking for a password. I'm assuming it thinks things are encrypted or something. The SD card reads fine on a computer. It will not format anything as nothing is mounted. I tried a factory reset from the boot loader menu and it just freezes the phone.
I've looked around and can't seem to find anyone with the same problem.

Your internal SD is corrupted. There is no fix that I know of. You'll have to format. Try to get as much data off as possible before doing so.

Yes, but it's just as easy to mount the internal memory via recovery and format with a PC.

I suggest running the latest RUU then. Hit the top link in my sig and scroll down to the bottom of the OP. The link to the latest RUU (version .4) can be found there.

I've tried the latest RUU and when it starts the process, and get's to waiting for Bootloader the phone shuts down (from bootloader/fastboot usb), and does not turn back on, then the program errors out.
I also tried ViperRUU and when it gets to preparing the phone shuts down and nothing happens.
I also tried renaming the rom.zip folder in the ViperRUU to PJ75IMG.zip and placing it on the sd card but it says no or wrong image.
I think this phone is toast

Is the phone S-off or S-on? If it's S-on, you will have to relock the bootloader to run the RUU.

Windows 8. DOn;t have HTC Syn installed. Just the ADB drivers so the computer will see the phone as the phone will not boot into anything but bootloader/recovery.

Try a Windows 7 machine. Windows 8 & 8.1 don't play nice.

Trying it on my Windows 7 laptop, got the same problem. I installed latest htc sync, rebooted. Ran the RUU installer, go through all the menus and to the point where it is going to install. It says "Checking", then goes to "Rebooting Bootloader", this is where the phone shuts off. I can get the phone back into bootloader has it is waiting for bootloader before it errors. But then it eventually errors out with error 171 usb connection error. This is the stock usb cable btw

Did you open HTC sync and connect your phone? This sometimes installs additional drivers.

I root the rom files from the RUU (rom_1 and rom_2) and renamed them PJ75IMG.zip and placed them on the SD card (one at a time). I tried the larger sized one which shows it will update the bootloader, splash1, sbl2, sbl3, trust_zone, rpm, adsp, pgfs_spcustom, wcnss, tp, sbl1, recovery, radio_v2, radio_cust.
As soon as I hit volume up it goes to bootloader - updating...then just stays there endlessly. I can remove the sd card and it does nothing. Phone is frozen there. I have to hold power and then get back to bootloader and nothing has changed.
Both files I got from the RUU doe that.

Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas at the moment.
One last thing to try. Hit the top link in my sig and go to the RUU downloads and try the 3.17 RUU on Windows 7. You can also try the alternative PJ75IMG method, as well. If you use the PJ75IMG method make sure the file is named PJ75IMG.zip with no extra .zip extension on the end (Windows automatically hides extensions, so check it and make sure), and make sure the file is on the root of your external SD card and not in any folders. If this doesn't work, and you feel comfortable doing it, send me the phone and I'll take a look at it.

[Q] PJ75IMG.zip

so I copied the JB RUU zip into the root of the sdcard(internal) and when I go into bootloader...it doesn't see it...any suggestions? i'm on hboot1.12
Ruu packages don't run from the bootloader, and never place any update packages on internal memory. Should anything go wrong you will be stuck in a seemingly endless loop of updating and rebooting. The ruu zip needs to be run from the desktop with the phone in fastboot. Unlimited.io has the directions on running the ruu zip.
can you help me with how to get my phone back to stock?
i'm rooted, bootloaded unlocked and running a custom ROM.
when I've tried to relock the bootloader and run the RUU from Windows, nothing happens...it just freezes.
what i'm trying to accomplish is to get all the latest firmware and radio without s-off...i can't do s-off because i don't have a windows 7 32-bit computer. i know it's a bit of a runaround but i figured i could go back to stock unrooted with the latest release and then reroot, unlock, and then load a custom ROM again with the latest firmware and radios...

Actually that's not exactly true. If he has an RUU.zip he can flash that through fast boot. You'll need to place the RUU.zip in his adb folder on the pc. Open a command window there. Then type
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip RUU.zip
Only RUU.exe files can be run from the computer. And in both cases he'll have to relock his phone before he runs or flashes anything.

You really should s-off. You can definitely do it on a 64 bit computer by booting a live CD of ubuntu 32 bit on a 64 bit computer. It's totally supported. Head on over to the dirtyracun thread. Thank you for repeating and elaborating on what I said which was ruu zip is run from the desktop with phone in fastboot
when i relock my phone, my phone gets stuck in the bootloader and won't do anything, won't be recognized by the computer, and just gets stuck there with a "security warning". i can't get into recovery or anything...i have to re unlock it for me to be able to do anything. so how can i run fastboot through the computer if my phone is unrecognized by the computer when relocked?

The bootloader will only scan for the PJ75IMG file if it's in the root folder of your external SD card. It won't look for it in your internal storage. Remove the SD card and delete the file. You can then put the card back in your phone.

You know....you could've simply removed the SD card, then boot into the bootloader. After it finishes the scan for PJ75IMG, reinsert the SD, then boot into recovery. That's what I always do.
That way, I'm not forced to use another device, or boot back into Android (if I didn't wipe my OS).

Actually, the problem was a little more "involved". I got stuck in a boot loop trying to install the Sense 5 port on my phone (this was after I had done the touch panel driver update after downgrading it previously) and I forgot to delete it. Every time I booted to the bootloader, it automatically scanned for the file on the card, so I had no way of getting into recovery. I keep all my backups, etc., on my SD card, so removing it and booting the phone wasn't an option at the time

Forgive me if I don't fully understand your situation. This has happened to me many times with the touch panel zip. While I'm in the bootloop, I remove my SD. I boot into the bootloader, then reinsert it. That's when I boot into recovery. Simple and easy.
I don't mean to dwell on the matter, but I'm sure that someone will run into this problem while they have no pc access or alternate solutions for an extended period of time.

Trying to upgrade the HBOOT to accommodate the new partition layout, I did the following:
With the Jewel disconnected from the USB...
Booted into hboot/bootloader
System started scanning for PJ75IMG. Finds it and starts update.
Finishes update and tells me to press power to reboot.
Stuck in HTC white screen for at least 10 minutes, as of 9:53 pm EST
Is there something wrong or do I need to wait longer or what?

:highfive:Thanks. I guess I freaked out. Went back to recovery and TWRP 1b was installed, so I just cleared partitions, installed ROM and there it was. I should flash phones more often to get much more familiar.
... and then again... now after ROM flash, it get stuck on the ROM's splash window (Beanstalk 4.4, new partition ready, digital roaming fixed). GRRRR
SOLVED - It seens I didn't wipe partitions. Once that was done Beanstalk started set-up. D'uh

When I goto recovery I goto the TWRP Recovery screen with all the blue boxes.
Apparently I must have deleted my internal SDcard , I cant mount it. It shows 0mb. If I try to click restore it shows nothing on the internal card.
I do however see the Micro SD card.
For awhile, I was able to see the Cyanogen Mod splash screen just spinning, now is just black.
I can boot into Recovery mode.
Any helpful ideas to try. Im guessing I need to get my internal sdcard accessible again somehow?

Lol. I said to preform a wipe, install the Rom, fastboot the boot.img, and restart the phone.
Not sure why you did anything with a token and you don't need to keep flashing recovery. No clue what the other thing is that you're flashing. And you're going to want a much later version of TWRP. Preferably 2.3.3.0+.
So I'll run through this again even though there are guides to all of this.
1. Wipe Cache, Cache/Delvik, Data, and System.
2. Install your ROM.
3. fastboot flash boot boot.img (that's a ROM kernel).
4. Restart your phone.

You need to elaborate on nothing "responding." If touchscreen doesn't work then you need to downgrade using babyracun and S-OFF.

Like delakit said, you must have the 3.16 firmware with the new touch panel. Meaning, you can only use 3.16 based sense ROMs. If you get S-off, you can downgrade your firmware and use any ROM you like.

No cell signal

I'm getting no voice nor data signal except for roaming. Wiping the ROM and flashing a different one (I tried CM9, currently on CM10.1) didn't help. I fear for the worst, because RUU-ing isn't an option since Fastboot isn't working for me at all so I can't re-lock. Anyone have any ideas?
edit: What I did: made a Ubuntu live USB drive. Fastboot worked on Ubuntu so I was able to RUU. RUU fixed my problem.

Verizon. Basically with Fastboot, Windows says "USB device not recognized", and device manager says "Device enumeration failed". Multiple OS installs, multiple USB ports, multiple computers. From what I can tell, Fastboot ain't gonna work anymore. I'm currently on Windows 8.1 with Koush's universal drivers installed, and using the Android SDK that came with Android Studio. Going to try the latest Sense 3.6 stock ROM and see what happens.

PM Me
can't get any Sense ROM to flash either... I think I'm just going to put CM10.1 back on, hopefully when I wake up tomorrow it'll just have been a service outage in my area. If not, well... new phone for me I guess
edit: odd, Speedtest.net is showing that I'm on LTE (Verizon being the only one in the US with 700Mhz LTE) and my external IP address is in 70.0.0.0/8 which is a Verizon-owned address space. Maybe I am on Verizon but it just thinks it's roaming.
Try S-Off and RUU. You can on AOSP as long as you RUU right after (do not put PH98 RUU on SD card until after S-Off, I had to reformaty SD card).
I just recently ran JB 0.1 windows version while on 2.28 Hboot and Infection (CM10.1 based ROM). My boot partition went wonky, but I was able to downgrade RUU ad it fixed everything. With S-Off you have no worry about needing to do fastboot.

Thanks, I'll try it out. I considered doing S-Off, but I wasn't able to get it back to stock. Now that I know it works, I'll try it.

I have the proper drivers not koush's universal....quite a few people have had problems with those drivers and if I'm not mistaken s-off still requires the phone to connect through cmd prompt...it won't let me upload here so please pm me so I can help

R3vent3ch, thank you for your offer but I think I got it. I was able to fastboot oem lock it using a Live Ubuntu flash drive (used this guide to install adb and fastboot). After I RUU, hopefully it'll work. If not, it's off to the Verizon store to see my options.
Looks like the RUU worked

[Q] Trouble rooting...LOTS of trouble.

Okay so I have been trying to root and I have tried everything I can find.
I have a fully upgraded phone so Revolutionary won't work for me out of the box and so I am trying to HTCDev unlock.
The problem though, is that I can't get Windows 8.1 to recognize my device. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times trying to get it to work. ADB works fine and can see the Thunderbolt but fastboot will not.
Nothing I have found has changed anything.
I also have a laptop with Ubuntu, would that work better?
You need to do it from a Windows 7 or lower computer. In order for the bolt to be seen in fastboot on Windows 8 it would require an update to the fastboot drivers on the phone which is very very unlikely.

Would trying it in Ubuntu work? Although almost all the tutorials seem to assume you are doing it through Windows.

Yes it should. Although, to unlock, s off and root ics on the bolt revolutionary isn't going to work straight up. You will have to downgrade the hboot version in order to be fully unlocked.

The tutorial I am following is leading me through unlocking with HTCdev, and installing SuperUser, would I still have to downgrade and use Revolutionary?
Sorry, complete newb.

Before you continue with the tutorials can you verify what android version you have for me?

Android version 4.0.4
HTC Sense 3.6
hboot 1.08
If any of that helps.

That is exactly what I needed to know. You need to go to infectedrom.com and use the guide that is there to unlock and s off. The problem with what you posted earlier is that even if you unlock with HTCdev your hboot is going to prevent revolutionary from working. You have to downgrade your hboot in order to use Revolutionary.

Can you give me a direct link? Because the one I was using last night from InfectedROM was just walking me through the htcdev unlock.
Edit: I found it...seems it has me load different things from the other one I was following.
It's the Lt. Belspur post. But I finally got fastboot to work! So it's looking promising. Thank you very much.

I see where you're stuck now. You can do it in Ubuntu but you may get stuck at some point. I would definitely recommend doing it using Windows 7.

Wrong forum. You should ask in the Kindle fire forums because I haven't owned one or even handled one in person for that matter. It might would help if you were on newer than xp. Vista at least. Idk though

Edit: I missed your other post, but that is exactly the tutorial I've been following. I'm near the end...see the following problem. :/
Okay, so I'm almost to the end...I'm to the point of putting the .19 ROM on my sd card and loading it into hboot.
What happens is that it recognizes it, loads it, checks it, and then goes back to hboot.
The suggestions from the post I am following say to try reformatting the SD card, or a different image. I have done both. Any other suggestions?
And by the way, thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Make sure you don't have the file named PG05IMG.zip.zip
Windows, by default, hides well known file extensions, so it may have gotten zip attached to it twice, one of which is not visible.
So remove the visible ".zip" extension and try again...

Done. Still the same result. Goes through loading the file, checking the file, and then just back to hboot.
I'm having the same issue. Does anyone have a GOOD copy of this Zip?

At&t 1.58.502.1 Bootable RUU - No PC required - Mac friendly

Here it is for everyone who has been asking for it! At&t bootable 1.58.502.1 RUU! No PC needed. This is for everyone who is having trouble with the ruu restore exe or using a mac or linux or other machine.
First off, I am NOT responsible for any thing that happens to your phone. As long as you follow instructions you should be fine, but again I am not responsible if you hard brick or anything else for that matter. If you are not comfortable with this procedure or have any questions, please ask first and not after you have destroyed your phone.
-Requirements-
1. Storage: Micro SD card required. I have heard you can use external storage for this but I have NOT confirmed this myself and do not recommend it. I have my Micro SD formatted with FAT, Not exFAT. I wouldn't think this would matter, but I have NOT verified it working from exFAT or any other format. I also recommend a descent brand sdcard as this is when you do NOT want it to fail. Your Chevron sdcard may not be the best idea.
***update*** External storage and exFAT said to be working by users in this thread.
2. CID: I have verified this restore properly working with at&t cid "CWS__001" and super cid "11111111" NO OTHER CID WILL WORK! This is ONLY for the At&t HTC One M8, NO other variant is supported.
3. Bootloader/Soff: I have my boot loader unlocked and my phone is soff, the process works perfect and does not relock boot loader nor put security back on. Since this is the non modified version of the official HTC ruu, it may work with s-on and or boot loader locked, but I have NOT tried it and do not recommend it to anyone as it has not been verified to work and I don't want any bricks out there.
***update*** s-on, said to be working by users in this thread, but you must relock your boot loader first.
4. Current firmware: I have confirmed this ruu working when coming from current 1.58.502.1 and from 2.12.401.3. I have NOT tried this coming from an Google play edition conversion.
-Instuctions-
1. Plug your phone in so there is no chance of it dying.
2. Back up anything that you need. This is an RUU and will completely wipe your phone like new. Everything will be gone including apps, contacts, pictures, music, text, recovery, etc… Again this will WIPE your phone. This will not wipe the Ext sd card.
3. Download the file that I have uploaded to Android File Hosting and verify md5 after downloading to make sure you do not have corrupt file. I have downloaded it myself and restored again just to make sure upload process went well. Again, verify your file. If you do not know how to check md5 simply google it. Please do not ask questions like this in this thread.
4. Simply move the "0p6bimg.zip" to the ROOT of your EXT micro sd card.
5. Boot to your boot loader. There are many ways to get to your boot loader. A lot of custom roms have it built into the restart menu. If you have usb debugging enabled its just "adb reboot bootloader" If you can't get there with one of these methods, simply make sure phone is on, hold vol up and power for 11 seconds until screen shuts off, let go and hold vol down and power until boot loader comes up. "about 4 seconds"
6. Click HBOOT in your boot loader. Your phone will automatically scan the file and ask if you want to update. Hit vol up for yes or vol down for no.
7. Phone will begin RUU restore. You can watch what it does on the screen as it will go through a list and bypasses are normal. It will reboot boot loader and you can watch progress bars in the top right corner. It goes through a TON of them so do NOT turn off phone for any reason and let it finish. The process takes about 15 minutes give or take. Once it is done, it will say complete, press power to reboot. Again do not power off phone or even touch it for that matter during this process.
Enjoy! This is a great file to keep on your phone in case you need a restore on the run or anything. If anyone tries any of the methods that I have said have not been verified and have success such as coming back from google play edition, locked boot loader, s-on, please let me know if they worked and I will change this post. Again I do NOT recommend these!
Please click my thanks button if this has helped you out. Thanks to Android File Host for hosting it too.

Attempting this now... will edit in an update. Thx
Worked like a charm. I'll edit in any issues i find.
EDIT: Only issue i'm having is that I can't update Google apps or ATT apps.
Reflashing stock recovery seemed to fix the issue for me.

That's just Google play services being outdated. Reboot usually fixes that with any Rom. Recovery has nothing to do with installing apps.

I tried rebooting, clearing data and cache and the wifi off on method. None of them worked. After about 10 attempts I tried to boot into recovery to wipe cache but it failed. So I loaded stock recovery back on.
Nothing to see here...

You are mistaken. Please check again and edit your post. It's a shame that I spent a good bit of my time getting this up for everyone and the first few posts read that someone whom has 4 posts can't update their apps and somehow think flashing recovery can make a difference and you say it is a Verizon ruu. This is just the Rom.zip stripped from the official AT&T ruu. Nothing has been altered. You have your files mixed up.

if i patched my current hboot to disguise "Tampered" and "Relocked" should i reverse it before flashing this? I cannot find the post anywhere, but i recall reading on one or more threads that this was a requirement to flash a new firmware. By the way, i have an at&t M8, bootloader unlocked, s-off with a CWS__001 CID. thanks in advance for replies to my question.

Just blew out a complete restore with this, worked flawlessly. Also installed towelroot by geohot to root it. Then installed Rom installer from play store. Then installed the latest philztouch recovery .img with the Rom Installer program. Boom!!! All from my phone external sd! Awesome!

just wondering if anyone tired this coming from GPE conversion.
first off I want to thank the OP for this. I was updating (or rather reverting back) to stock with the RUU from the HTC site. When it got to step 2/7 at 66% I lost power and poof.. after this all I could do was get to bootloader and fastboot. Being that I could get to those I knew that I wasn't hard bricked...yet... whew. I tried re-running that RUU but no luck. I then went into fast boot and flashed a rcovery image and then booted into recovery and tried to restore a nand backup.. No go on that. So finally I downloaded this and put on the root of my external card and this worked...
THANK YOU!!!:good::good:
