[Q] Will factory resetting M8 remove SIM unlock? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Planning to buy an At&t HTC One M8 but wanted some clarity regarding unlocking the phone.
Will it remove the SIM unlock if I do a factory reset if the phone is:
-Carrier Unlocked
-Third Party paid unlocked
Also, will I get the software updates in the above two scenarios?

Factory unlock is permanent as it is stored in the nvram.. Which is a protected partition in the phone that is separate from your system.

sim hard lock

i accidently hard locked my optimus g. If i use other people's rom or any other custom roms on my phone, would i be able unlock the sim lock again?
You set up a sim pin you don't remember?
too many wrong guesses and you will get puk locked. I got puk locked on my gnexus from Sprint once, there was no way to fix, factory wipe, install different rom, Odin restore nothing would work, the phone would still prompt for the unlocked code, took it to Sprint with stock firmware they couldn't get past it either ended up needing a replacement.

Sim lock follows the card regardless of software or hardware, if you have att service there is a puk override however it will only give that option after using all attempts, call att tech, worse case scenario they'll get you a new sim, personally I've never had an instance where the puk didnt work tho so you should be fine.
ahh yes sorry this is at&t problem I had with Sprint was sim was embedded and they did not have the puk key

[Q] unlocking Verizon's bootloader

so I have my galaxy note 2 rooted and I was wondering if I unlock the bootloader will I lose all of the pictures videos etc on my phone memory? In other words, can I unlock the bootloader without losing any of my settings? is the only way to unlock the bootloader for VRALL4 the back atcha Verizon program?
Unlocking the bootloader will not impact data, pics, etc. That said, its always a good idea to back up you data periodically as hard drives do fail, SD cards get corrupted, phones get lost etc. One easy way to do that is auto sync pics to dropbox or another cloud service.
As for the unlock method you have it right...Adam's is the one and only way.

If I unlock an AT&T HTC m8 phone, would I....?

If I unlock an AT&T HTC M8, would I still use the AT&T based roms even though its unlocked on another carrier or would I now use unlocked based roms?
Yes att roms.

Not enough in the OP to sufficiently know what the person has in mind. Namely, the SIM unlock method intended; and also whether you want to stay on the AT&T ROM or change it, versus what ROM you think they need to be on for it to work on your network.
Are you talking about obtaining the subsidy unlock (SIM unlock) code from AT&T? This SIM unlocks the phone, and doesn't modify anything else, so you can and will be on the same stock ROM; which will work fine on the other carrier. You may (probably) need to enter APN info, as the APN info for the "other" carrier will not be pre-configured on the M8.
Alternately, if you intend to unlock the bootloader, S-off and SIM unlock the phone using the method provided here on XDA; then at that point you can install whatever ROM you want, or keep it the stock AT&T ROM.
In any case, it doesn't matter what ROM you are on, in order to make the phone work on a non-AT&T network. However, you might want to install another ROM anyway (or at least root), just to get rid of the AT&T-centric features, apps, limitations (WiFi hotspot is blocked), etc.

I'm confused...

So, I have an AT&T M8 that I unlocked the bootloader, and S-Off using sunshine, and SuperCID. I wanted to convert to a Google Play Edition, which I did successfully. I then wanted to SIM unlock my phone. So I bought an unlock code which I have in my possession.
I decided I wanted Sense back, so I reversed as much as I could, and flashed the ViperOne ROM. I did not have an alternate SIM card (T-Mobile) until today. I put it in, and boom, I'm on the network? No unlock code request or anything... I tried putting my CID back to the AT&T one but it still works just fine with the T-Mobile SIM...
I may end up selling this phone at some point, but want to be absolutely sure it is permanently SIM unlocked...To my knowledge, I haven't done anything to the phone that would indicate this... How can I be sure?
I may be wrong but I believe that achieving s-off will sim unlock your phone.

At least in the case of Sunshine, it does not SIM unlock. I checked with jcase in their IRC support channel...
AFAIK, S-off methods do not intentionally SIM unlock. Its always been a separate process. For instance, for firewater, s-off was also a separate process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708572
If OP wants to be "sure" its SIM unlocked, you can try the process above. Although, I don't know of a way to confirm, other than inserting another carrier's SIM (which you have already done).
The GPE edition is SIM unlocked. Is it possible that something in the conversion also unlocks the SIM?

How to remove sim card restrictions?

Hi, my father-in-law and mother-in-law have both got Galaxy A10s that were purchased locked to the carrier(AIS Thailand). Their contracts are now over and they want to go to a new carrier but their phones are locked to the AIS. We have contacted AIS and they advised that it is not possible to remove the lock on these phones. I do not for a moment believe that to be true. I can access the bootloader and obviously then could load custom roms but I am haping there is a way to just disable this sim restriction without reloading roms?
