Help! Need simple instructions on how to root.
I get that if I search enough, I'll understand how to root. But I did search. And I'm still so confused.
Can someone provide step by step instructions, please?

You honestly need to read until you understand our your going to brick your phone. ... Too many people don't read and then just beg for someone to spoon feed them and fix their phone because they did something stupid

Read up, and when you think you got it read some more..
I know it may be a little unconventional in XDA but there are good people also on YouTube like wwjoshdew, zedomax & Qbking77 (to name a few) who make step by step tutorials on rooting, flashing custom recovery, etc. I am more of a visual learner so YouTube helped me a lot. With the info from these gents and some XDA reading time you will be up to date and Semi-Noob in no time. [emoji12]

Pretty much any method is fairly streamline now. There's a root toolkit that does all the work for you, all you have to do is enter in a number that relates to the command when you run it. Be certain you are using the proper root method for your carrier and follow all instructions carefully.
Tripping the flash counter happens when you flash your recovery via odin. It triggers the built in counter in download mode to show that you have "tampered" with the device, and therefor can be refused warranty work. To avoid this, use either ADB through command line, or terminal emulator.

I agree that there is a lot of posts all over the place but to all fairness, there is posts in this same section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722344 that shows you exactly what to do to root.
I agree that you NEED TO READ. If you aren't willing to do the research you're going to have an expensive brick instead of an amazing phone running Jelly Bean roms or whatever you choose.
Also, don't just rely on one thread. Read multiple so you see opinions and suggestions.

Don't think it matters if you trip the flash counter any more there's an app to get rid of it Triangle Away. Also be careful many people have Lost there Imei# and now have a very expensive mp3 player. Might be a good idea to wait until they figure out how to back up imei first.

I literally got my phone, read here for 30 min and had a rooted phone in 45 after the phone arrived. Bottom line is u didn't read. Don't give me that shot that there are so many threads. Check the stickies. It's right there man. Sorry to be a ****, but I can't stand lazy people.

I think it's funny how quick everyone is to tell people to read - When there are likely many threads that you've started that a google search could've solved in 5 minutes. He had plenty of other questions that had nothing to do with how to root his device. Yes reading can help solve most of his issues, but when you have the possibility of turning a 600$ phone completely worthless, it doesn't hurt to ask questions.
Really, get over yourselves.
Good call I have spent probably a week reading not only this forum but others as well and find numerous conflicting methods for rooting. There's nothing wrong with asking that's why there's a questions forum to begin with.

It is pretty straight forward. Make sure you have the drivers installed before rooting. In short, follow the instructions to the point. If you are worried about tripping your flash counter, there is a specific root method you follow. If you do not care, then you can use the tool kit. If you look through the posts in the development section, you will easily find it. PM me if you need help.
When I plug my phone into computer it finds my device drivers. Will that work or do I have to download them from the link provided?

Yes there are many links for rooting on that page. Can be quite confusing and not one tutorial that I saw which was simply laid out. You don't need to flash a kernel to root. You don't need to worry about the flash counter. You simply need to install CWM with odin and install superuser with CWM Go here and follow the directions.

A Google search for "root galaxy note I717" brings up 4 links to the same site, 2nd link down is for a very simple ICS root method w/video (linked above by Agoattamer) on rootgalaxynote.com.

I don't know, I'm not everybody. How did you? I had my phone rooted long before the super thread. And I used the link I gave for the OP. It is universal, simple, and fully documented. Glad to hear it. If you would, please place a [Solved] stamp at the beginning of this thread title, so that it keeps the forum clean and makes it easy for people with the same problem to find the solution.

The super everything thread, is the best resource by far. (top of the general section)
While I agree that youtube has a few good vids, I must say that often, they lack critical steps for a complete instruction set.
Reading the individual threads, and their associated steps, is the best way to ensure success....g
Okay, so after waiting for God knows how long for Jellybean, I finally decided to root my phone.
But, alas, I have NO IDEA how to do this.
I've tried researching it, but everything I find makes no sense whatsoever.
Does anyone know where an easy, step by step on how to root is?

Just remember folks that reading all the sticky threads (those are the threads that appear at the top of the threads) is something we're ALL expected to do. Even and especially if you're new here. Also searching using google with xda key words and using the site search function are a must. Not tying to be rude, but we were all new once. Let the new users be an example to other new users.
I figured it out.
Thanks guys!
And yeah, shoulda read the stickies ahead of time.

What you need to do is read all of it first then try to root. The first page gets your phone ready for rooting. The second page gets your computer ready for rooting. The right before you start flashing the kdz file you have to set up the magic trick (replacement of the bin file). Good luck

I know it's frustrating but the method works. I've done it several times on this phone. Listen why don't you just concentrate on one thing instead of two. Go step by step regardless if you thing you don't need it just go through it. Rooting is not hard but it's not very easy either. Sounds like your experience is getting in the way of your progress. That's just my opine. Good luck!
