[Q] Samsung TOS and Security Update Notification - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm on rooted MK2 and have been getting push notifications from Samsung about updated TOS that needs to be read and accepted before it will push some security updates. I'm not keen on letting it update. Anyone know what it does? I've just ignored it.

I haven't seen that on my MK2 phone. I'd say that accepting any new security updates is a bad idea if you want to keep rooted.

Are you referring to that "security policies update" that pops up in the notification panel? I have seen that myself, a couple of times. I just ignore it as well. Kind of afraid to update any kind of security on this thing.

Annoying security update pop-up that won't go away
I received the 4.4.2 Verizon update and periodically I get a pop-up that wants me to sign up/sign in to the Samsung website and become a member before I can read the privacy policy. Since I do not have access to this policy as I will not sign up/provide marketing and SPAM information to Samsung I have to decline the option each time.
How do I prevent this unreasonably frequent demand for my personal information interfering with my use of my Note 2/Verizon?

I am stock rooted 4.4.2 and getting these pop ups every few days. I have not accepted yet either afraid to mess up root.

I got an update request today as well on my 4.2.2 MDK S4 (root and unlocked bootloader). I opened the update details and it said that it was from "SDM app" (package name=> com.samsung.sdm).
SDM 1.0 has the following APK paths:
/system/app/SDM.apk
/system/app/SDM.odex
So I did the following:
1) opened TiBu
2) Restored SDM 1.0 to recent backup (last sunday) --> update alert stayed
3) Deleted SDM 1.0 App+data --> alert gone, but it didn't actually delete the app (not sure why)
4) Froze SDM 1.0
5) Backed up the "frozen" SDM 1.0
As a safety precaution, I also froze "Samsung Updates" (com.sec.android.app.samsungapps) and "SamsungHubUpdater" (com.sec.everglades.update)
Also, I couldn't find the spdclient.apk file (even did a search with ES File Explorer with no results)...i think i already removed it when I first rooted it back in February
NOTE:
The update i got had the following URL in the text: www[dot]verizonwireless[/url][dot]com/galaxys4update ... redirects to www[dot]verizonwireless[dot]com/support/system_update/6872.html with the following update details:

Any option for unrooted users?
This is really REALLY annoying to have to opt out 3-5 times a day.

I was getting the same message - I finally clicked on it and was presented with the ACCEPT/DECLINE for the TOS - I selected DECLINE and was given the option to not be notified of "Security Updates" again (with instructions on how to re-activate them.

If you're unrooted why are you opting out? There's no real way to stop it without root because its a system app. Maybe try looking for it in the application manager and see if you can uncheck notifications? Not positive if that's possible because I haven't been on stock tw in a long time

I do not want to let Samsung gather any/all data from my phone as I have read that the agreement allows.

For me I get the information where I can change this in the settings after declining and I still have to decline about 3-5 times a day.

I would expect that there are some items that might be able to be deleted with something like "NoBloat", so as not to be badgered by the notifications.

SDM is the update manager. The security policy updates app is called, er, "Security policy updates".
I also have ELM Agent and Verizon Support & Protection frozen.

Same filesize and MD5 for the "Blur_Version.6.11.748.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip" between leaked update (by yours truly) and the official soak test OTA to 6.12.173. Just to let everyone interested in the subject know. Although most of you already knew where to find that info... I am not allowed to help you guys find it anymore though. Linking to another phone site is against XDA rule 11. to not sell things. I was graciously reminded of that when most of my posts were deleted today ^_^
I did this already thanks to the info on the other site for Verizon users.
Here's what i found i needed to do.
1. Root
2. install OTA rootkeeper, save root and unroot
3. hold both volumes plus power to get to fastboot
4. press both volumes to get to the built in Moto-recovery
5. install the above zip
6. restore rootkeeper's root.

you don't have to temp unroot. You can just install the update and then restore root afterwards.

I had problems doing that, would not restore root no matter what I did. I had gone ahead and flashed .174 so I had to fastboot back to .744 and try again, but temp unrooting before each update.

It's a great update, EXCEPT... you can no longer disable the battery full notification / chime, and the battery full notification triggers a red flashing LED that can't be cleared.
I take that back - you CAN disable the notification option, but it doesn't make any difference.
Oh, and this overrides any other notifications that use the LED.
Three steps forward, one back.
there is already a 2.36 realease Blur_Version.651.167.20.XT910.Retail.en.EU + BP 03.1C.91P + WT 2.0.0-139 + Bootloader 0A.6C
so whats the need for this unless its CDMA?

[Q] Rooters, how do you stop ota notifications (P769)

Rooted, but constantly getting the system update (already downloaded) notifications .
Methods I found from search and did not work:
- Renamed and moved otacerts.zip.
- Deleted the ota update from Cache
Have not yet attempted:
- Accept the update, which will supposedly fail due to the missing files, thus stopping the update, and the notification.
Before I resort to making that leap, what did you guys do to stop it?
Thanks a bunch!

Wish I had know about that, mistakenly updated to 10g and lost root
Here's my dilemma. I had been getting tired of the notification. So I let it do it's thing. Upon reboot it gave me the Triangle Android boot screen. Nothing was installed. After a battery pull it started up fine. Now I don't have a recovery. I had CWM installed with the old Prada apk. I tried using the install again. Reboot to recovery just reboots phone. Any advice?
Getting frustrated with the ota 10g popping up. I am rooted and have voodoo root keeper. Update wont go through. Freezes with red triangle. Tried unrooting with voodoo and disabling su. Nothing seems to work. Anybody know how I can get this to either update or disable 10g notifications? I have titanium but not sure what to freeze.

All I had to do was watch it fail once and then the notification went away, but I have heard that if that does not stop the stupid update notices you can go into /cache and find the 28 or so mb file for the update (it has a fairly distinctive name), copy the filename, delete the file, and create an empty file, then paste that name you copied from the real update as the name for the blank file. Then, when your favorite little notification pops up, press install now and watch the red triange pop up. Now, just hold power button until it powers off, then turn it on, and alakazam, no more update irritation. Also, one reason the update sometimes doesn't go through is if you have deleted any of T-Mobile's bloatware. If you do want the update to install, your best hope for restoring the bloatware is in this thread HERE. Good Luck!
While I can't vouch for anything else besides the P675 10e Tmobile version, the following method will stop the update prompts. It *should* work on all ICS and JB devices, including Nexus.
0. Root, if you haven't already.
1. Download AutoRun Manager
2. In ARM, choose "Advanced"
3. Touch the wrench icon, and check
- Show System Entries
- Enable System Application Disable
4. Back on the application list, tap the refresh (circle arrow) icon if you don't see system apps. They should have a red background.
5. Find the app Google System Framework (aka: GSF) and tap it.
6. Uncheck the "com.google.<something>.gsf.update.SystemUpdate" receivers. I can't read my own handwriting at the moment, but they both end in SystemUpdate.
And there you go. I've been update free for at least 18 hours, and it's persisted through reboots. The receivers have yet to start back up.
Most ICS and JB devices should receive update notifications via the Google Services Framework, not the manufacturer's update applications. The manufacturer might have their own update procedures/apps/scripts once the update is downloaded and ready to install, but the notifications should all be handled by the GSF.
Personally, I tried freezing and even deleting all LGE update related apps (omadmclient [or whatever it's called], fota [several variants], and more), deleting the downloaded update, deleting the SSL certs, and even using a pm command in a shell script that ran every 5 minutes to kill all LGE update related modules. Nada. The only thing that worked was the above method.
I've also heard -- what DatNexus mentioned -- accepting the udpate then hard rebooting works, too. But it's not as universal (my Nexus 7 still kept prompting me, for example) and there's always a chance that accepting an update later on will brick or otherwise damage the file system rather than just fail outright.

You can try freezing 'lgfotapermission' app using Titanium Back up. It's just my guess. No guarantees. YMMV.

Thanks - I found it, and froze it, however I'm still getting the notification. Even after reset. Odd.
I believe the update check code is embedded into the settings apk. It will need to be re-compiled to prevent this.
If we knew what URL the device is getting its updates from we can block it with a hosts entry.
I found some info here on disabling the update notification for anyone who is still interested.

It looks like you need to freeze these two apps in Titanium Backup:
com.lge.lgfota.permission
com.lge.omadmclient
V10C P765 Rooted
I simply unchecked following option and I think it stops future OTA Notification.

Doesn't seem to work as update notification is still popping up on my P769.
This is how I stoped my phone from updateing and nagging. ( Must be rooted )
1. Download and install ( system tuner apk from playstore )
2. Launch system tuner and choose ( system with the red icon )
3. Choose (Google services framework ) and hit (details)
4. Scroll down to services and uncheck ( update.systemUpdateService
Thats all.

Am I the only one who definitely DONOT hit thanks when I see this line "Hit thanks if it helped"?
Thread cleaned. I don't see the reason of this whole argue you had. If someone wants to post hit thanks, let it be. It's definitely not worthy to be discussed. Now you should both excuse each other for jumping the guns for nothing.
I really hope you will.

I simply unchecked following option and I think it stops future OTA Notification.
Settings >>> About Phone >>> Software Update >>> Check Automatically (Uncheck this)

Can't find anywhere to do that on my phone. Of course I have a different phone, P769, think that is why?

Ditto. Not working for me either.

This caused a permanent wakelock on SystemUpdateService on my LG Optimus P769, so my phone never went to sleep mode. I even rebooted several times, and checked over several days. As soon as I re-enabled update.systemUpdateService, the phone was able to sleep again. It did seem to prevent the OTA popup from re-appearing, but at a cost of battery life.

It looks like you need to freeze these two apps in Titanium Backup:
com.lge.lgfota.permission
com.lge.omadmclient

Well I used Titanium backup to freeze com.lge.lgfota.permission and I used root explorer to change the lgfota.apk in \system\app folder to lgfota.bak and reboot.

How to disable OTA Downloads Verizon (vs985)

I found a useful trick to keep the ota from showing up, if you enter ##3328873 in tge dialer pad and enter 000000 for the service code you then can uncheck the ota-dm mode this should prevent any ota
Alternatively, you can simply freeze the System Updates process via Titanium Backup, as discussed in the Bloatware thread.
What OTA ?

My thoughts exactly. Disable updates for what? Verizon has their heads up their asses in that regard.

Thanks for the information. Verizon began pushing an OTA to my LG G3 today. It was very annoying, thanks again!
Thank you, but it seems I'm too late.
Now, event though I've unchecked it, I keep getting a menu to do an update. I keep pressing back to get out of the update now or schedule an update later, but I can't seem to get it to go away, Gonna try the titanium update freeze of the updater.
Disabling the System Updates apk also works.

Alternatively you can do what OP said since its easier and requires no third party apps or root. But hey, cool story bro.
Thank you. This method works. I tried the other two and they didn't work. The "hidden menu" version came up with a different menu than in the description and TiBU didn't stop the notifications (for me). First I tried moving the update files to a new directory I created, but the update message had already been triggered.
If you pull down the notifications and long-press on the OTA, you can disable the app and remove the icon from the screen.

At first I thought this worked, but it ended up not working. As you can see in the image below, I have the ota-dm unchecked, which worked for a while, but today the system update dialog/notification came back.

Getting this too
Same here
Use Rom toolbox pro to freeze the 2 ota apps, titanium is junk.
Afterwards, delete any files in root/cache/fota.

If you've already got root...which most people who are trying to stop OTAs have because they're wanting to keep root...why would you not simply freeze the process while you're going about the task of freezing all the bloat from Verizon? To me, that's easier as it allows a single action to restore everything back to stock settings (plus root and Bump) instead of having to use multiple methods to get back to such a state. But to each their own. I understand that some people like having their mobile OS weighed down from carrier installed garbage. Regardless, what kind of person knocks someone else for daring to add to the discussion with another method that, for many (especially those eventually wanting to flash ROMS), streamlines everything?
What are the exact names of the OTA apks? I looked in system/app and system/priv-apps.. Nothing really reads as system Ota or Ota something. Maybe I missed it. I would like to rename them manually.
Edit: is it LGFOTA.apk and its odex file?
Edit: ok thats not it update popped up after reboot. I now think its LGDMSClient.apk

It's a blue icon called 'system updates' in your application manager in your settings.

[q] 3.2.5 -> 4.5.2

I'm trying to upgrade my system. I originally rooted this HDX 8.9 with Towelroot and used HDXPosed. I've since disabled the HDXPosed module and copied over the 4.5.2 upgrade binary (update-kindle-14.4.5.2_user_452004220.bin) onto the internal storage as indicated here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201390370
However, even after rebooting, when I go into Devices > System Updates, it says that I'm current. If I do a "check now", it switches to "Last update failed." Doing a Retry gives the same result.
What do I need to un-block this update?

Make sure you have re-enabled OTAs using the same method used to disable them. Not certain uninstalling HDXposed will do the trick. A stronger approach is to reinstall stock to wipe out any changes that may be blocking OTA.
A couple choices:
- Pure stock 3.2.5. Download and instructions here. If it doesn't take you can force with Flashify. Note you will loose root with this approach (but can get it back if needed). Upgrade to 4.5.2 should happen automatically assuming OTA kicks in.
- Upgrade to a slightly tweaked 3.2.6. Details here. You can either copy to system storage or force with Flashify. Once OTA is reenabled uprade to 4.5.2 should happy automatically.
If you have Safestrap be sure to uninstall before applying any upgrades that may remove root (even temporarily).

So I already have the bin on the device. Could I use Flashify to just kick that in? I do worry about OTA as I don't want to get 4.5.3, I specifically want 4.5.2 so that I can reroot it afterwards. I've debated just doing a system reset, but I'm concerned about bricking possibility there... I know under some conditions resetting is not safe and I don't know if Towelroot/HDXposed/Gapps could trigger any of those conditions.
Never touched Safestrap so that isn't a concern, but thanks for the heads up.

You could try but if there is something funky with your device results are unpredictable. Understand your concern about potential for OTA to 4.5.3. You could flashify stock 3.2.5 and then 4.5.2 with wifi off. Use a tether as needed to move bin files around. Once on 4.5.2 you will need to reroot and block OTA. Assume you have secured instruction from other threads.
Regardless of the precautions bricking is always a possibility when flashing without a strong recovery solution. Fire OS seem pickier than most as evidenced by the strong cautions and numerous issues reported in the HDX forums. Amazon's recovery is essentially useless so when things go bad there are relatively few pull out options.
I would not do a system reset under any circumstances unless instructed but someone who can provide assurances that is the best path.
I just finally had some time to spend on this (thanks to another useless meeting at work). I upgraded to 4.5.2 and got it re-rooted with the cve<blah>.apk. I looked at this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/tut-disable-ota-4-5-2-install-gapps-t3043550 but it's really not clear how to go about this. In the past with 3.2.5 I just had to copy over some APKs and install them. Do I need Safestrap or Flashify or whatnot to install the gapps the way they're referring to, or is there an ADB equivalent of rsync that I can use?

Do not install Safestrap (incompatible with 4.x) or use Flashify for this task (fastest path to a brick). Not certain where you are having difficulity with the OP in the thread you referenced. Instructions seem pretty clear. Might be trying to over think it ...
Be aware Google recently updated Play Services which is causing havok with many Kindle devices. You might want to hold off for a few days until the dust settles. If you opt to press forward you'll need to block some Google updates to keep Play Services and other Google components from auto-upgrading. Look through other threads for instructions. Seems like there are a couple different approaches floating around.
