[Q] Lock screen freezing/Wifi won't stay on or connected - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys,
I've tried searching everything I can think of, but have had no results and I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I recently broke the digitizer in my S4, and got it exchanged at Geek Squad since I have insurance through them. (Which is a joke by the way)
Now, since I've got the new S4, I've been having problems out of it. It's really just down to two major issues.
1. When I lock the screen and unlock it again, 80% of the time it freezes up and I can't unlock it or anything. The touchscreen becomes completely unresponsive.
2. My Wifi keeps kicking itself off, regardless of what network I'm on. I also have gone into the settings and have made it always on, so it shouldn't be doing that at all.
I thought that it might just be a bad OS or something, so I re flashed the stock ROM for it, and had the same problem. So then, I rooted and flashed it using a custom ROM, and STILL have the same problems.
Could it just be in the hardware? Apparently this isn't as common of an issue as I was hoping.

Hi, I've never heard of those problems before, but if the 100% stock wipe factory image isn't working out for you I am pretty sure it is a hardware issue. If this is a software issue, your phone would have been totally fine with a odin restore. (but then again..im a newbie soo yeah )

+1 on the hardware issue. Was your replacement phone from Geek Squad actually a new phone or was it reconditioned? Either way I would reflash the Stock OS, return it to Best Buy and try another replacement. It should not be locking up at the get-go upon receiving a replacement.
Edit: I went thru 6 replacement S4's with VZW before I got a genuine working phone. If you paid for the replacement insurance you are entitled to get a phone that "works" to your satisfaction.

Yeah, I figured that was most likely my only option. I was just hoping I didn't have to deal with Geek Squad anymore haha.
Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

NP, good luck :good:
They're called Geeks for a reason.........
Edit: I would hold off rooting or flashing any custom Rom's until you get a stable replacement running on Stock. Takes less time to switch out another replacement.

Does your screen become unresponsive only when your WiFi is on?

[Q] Has your SGSII ever turned off on its own? Please add to the poll :)

Just trying to build some statistics as to how common this turning off problem is.
--------------------
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ANSWERING:
1) Obviously this is regarding the phone turning off on its own when its not due an empty battery.
2) Only answer with "no" if you've been using the phone for at least a week. If you've been using it for less and it hasnt turned off, answer with "No - but had it for less than a week".
--------------------
I just want to know before I send my phone to Amazon for replacement.
I've had it 8 days, so I clicked the 2nd "no". If I saw any hardware fault in a new device I'd immediately get onto the supplier for a replacement. Unless there's software at fault here (unlikely, but obviously possible) then I can't see the problem simply going away.
Hope you get it sorted mate.
Nope. Had the phone since may 6.

Touchwood, never and I've had the phone a few weeks now.
Had this problem last year with my new Desire, but returned it to HTC and they replaced the mobo without any problems.
Yep had it nearly 4 weeks and its went twice. Not in the last week or so though.

Everyone runs different apps and settings on their phones. Unless there's a specific hardware problem there's going be tons of variables to consider for those having reboot issues. I've had mine for six weeks and its never done anything wonky.
I returned my 1st one as it turned off a few times a day. Replacement has been fine.

Does reboot count as a yes?
I clicked yes but I am not 100% sure if this happened to me or not. Allow me to explain...
I was carrying it in my hand walking and I happened to look at the screen and it was showing the Samsung GT-i9100 splash screen seemingly for no apparent reason. When it went away it just went right back to where it was (no media card reading or anything).
It was strange to say the least but I have not seen it happen again since then and that was about a week ago and I have had the device for approx. 3 weeks now.
Does this sound like the same issue?

Oh sorry i forgot to mention this. No, reboots don't count as they're probably a software problem which can be fixed maybe with a new ROM or update or wtvr (i'm probably going to install another ROM eventually). And i'm not sure how a replacement will help with that, since I already have the KE7 firmware installed.
Just complete turn offs, cuz it might be a hardware problem, which can be solved by a replacement.
Thanks for the responses guys. Keep it up
Hmm, well i'm not really sure of anything, but that looks like a reboot to me. It might be that it turned off and you accidentally held the power button and turned it on, but since there was no card reading or anything, i think it's the "fast reboot" problem i've seen some people with on the forums. I hope it doesn't happen again

EVO 3D with a mind of its own

Hey whats up everyone. Ok long story short, I got the evo3d the first day it came out. Also rooted it with the first solution and never installed a custom rom for a while. Now a while back I started experiencing problems like when i touch a number key it either presses another, or sometimes enters it twice. It basically is making the phone impossible to use. I then figured maybe it had something to do with the original rom and the phone being rooted. So I then installed ViperRom as so many people have good things to say about it. The rom worked good for about a week or so and then the problem came back with the buttons just having a mind of its own. Now sometimes it will work with no issues for hours on end, and sometimes it just goes beserk from the get go. If anyone has experienced this and can please suggest something as Im ready to just call it in lost and have them send me a new one but if I can fix it I would much prefer that as I plan on just having it flashed to boost anyways since I've never used the 4g since the day ive gotten the phone.
Thanks in advance

I had this problem with another phone and I reinstalled my keyboard, because that's what was causing it.

It sounds like you've got issues with your digitizer. The only sure fix is to get a replacement.
response
Do you think maybe just trying to flash it back to stock would resolve the issue or possibly trying another rom? It happens so sporadic and only started after I rooted the phone. Also, to the poster above how do you reinstall your keyboard?

You can try to return to stock/unrooted and see if you can repeat the issue. And I didn't mean reinstall the keyboard, the digitizer is part of the touch screen assembly, so if you can repeat the problem for a sprint rep, they may give you a new/replacement phone.
Flashing back to stock, flipping kernels etc... Didn't fix mine. I had to get 2 of these 3d's until the 3rd finally worked. It's the digitizer.

Galaxy S III Not responding

Hi everyone,
i don't know if someone already encountered this but sometimes my GS3 does not respond when i try to wake him up. (it's not turned off just standby). The screen stays black en nothing works. One time the screen did woke up but i couldn't unlock it because the touchscreen didnt work. It could not be turned off and the buttons didn't do anything! The only way for me to get out of this was a battery pull!
I did not root or modify anything on this phone because i like the stock samsung TW for the first time .
Did anyone else have this problem? And how did u solve this? Thank u.
Possibly due to an app you have installed.

Thank u i didn't thought of that. Is their an easy way to find out wich app this could cause? I still find it very weird. If an app is not compatible than it just shouldnt install intead of breakin the phone right? XD
This happened me last night as well. Couldn't do anything other than turn the phone off, and when it came back on it was fine again.
Unrooted as well. Would like to find out how I can prevent this from happening again?
if you are not sure about the root cause of the problem better factory reset your mobile

Yes, if it happens again than i will try that. But i already sent the unit back from were i ordered it. They will send me a new one because its their policy to send a new one if something happens in 2 weeks.
So i will see if it still occurs with the new one otherwise its one of my apps. Than i will install only a few apps and see what causes it. If it doesnt occur one more thime than the unit was faulty. Ill keep u guys updated.

Did it happen once? My phone had it like 3 times so thats why i sent it back. But if it still occurs with my new phone than it must be one of the apps i got Luckily they got DOA policy. I asked if it includes ''the phone does not work as it should" and they said yes send it back u will get a new one yaay but now i have no phone
I had this. After a hard reset, multiple times, and configuring with no accounts (no samsaung account, no google, nothing), it still happened. I ended up returning the phone and I've not had a single problem since.
I think it was either faulty memory or a dodgy firmware flash (more likely). Either way, I didn't care to find out and now it's all good.

Hardware Problem? [NEED HELP!]

I was in the bathroom yesterday and my Evo 4g LTE started buzzing a lot. I had no idea what was going on, and the phone was just flashing screens. It was going between my homescreen, and a long-press on the home button(that shows all the screens together). At this point, I figured it was a hardware problem, and I still think it is. The problem is, my phone is unlocked, and it's running CM10 on it. I have no idea what I should do. It always has it's case on(otterbox), and I also have only dropped it a few times in the last month, from only about 2 feet high max. The last time I dropped it was a few nights ago. Once again, it just randomly started doing this. I tried flashing CM10 again, and it didn't help, it still acts like i'm pressing the home button non-stop, even in TWRP. I really need ALL the help I can get. I cannot afford to get a new phone.
Did you flash the stock rom, that would probably let you know if it a custom rom causing the problem? If it still does it, you might need to take it in to get looked at.
Take the case off and see what happens.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I took off the case, did not fix it. I flashed stock rom and it did not fix it. Where do I need to go to get it looked at? Sprint i'm assuming?
Yeah, make sure it's a corporate store that does repairs, don't go to some third party store, they normally aren't any help.

Okay, sorry it took me so long to reply. The phone might go a day and do the homescreen thing, but the next day it might work. It hasn't done it since about 2 pm yesterday and now it started up again. I also noticed that when I press on the right side of the screen, it makes a clicking noise. Can I get it repaired even though it's s-off, unlocked bootloader, and has a custom rom on it?

Need Help...Note 2 Keeps Freezing

I'm hoping you guys can help. Been a long time lurker here and am going to be buying my Note 2 at the end of the month. But my wife purchased one the day after Christmas, and since the new ota update in January, her N2 has been freezing a lot. Sometimes you can get it to turn back on, but than it freezes and reboots on its own. Most of the time she has to do a battery pull to get it to come back on. It happens about 5 times a day.
Verizon had her factory reset it, but it still has the persistent problem. Best Buy took a look at it and they couldn't figure it out. She is hoping we can figure it out before we have to send it back in, which would suck because she would be without a phone that she needs for work for a week. Not to mention Best Buy and Verizon stated that if it does need to be replaced, that it would be with a refurbished one. Which I am not at all too happy about that. Hoping you guys can help me out.

I tried to get her to root, but this is her first android device, she's had nothing but the Iphones prior and is nervous about doing stuff like that. It started after the last ota update, and the only recent app she downloaded was Unblock Me. Since then all this has been happening, and we already uninstalled Unblock Me suspecting that was the culprit. I have it on my phone with no problems.

turn it off and see if it helps. that strange behavior is most likely caused by an app. Can you screen shot or list what apps she has on her phone?
Yeah I'm thinking it's power saving mode turn it off see if she can make it through a day without it freezing. You don't need power saving on a note 2 battery life is great without it unless your wife is like most females and always forgets to charge her phones
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Here's the list of apps she has downloaded. She hasn't downloaded anything recently except for that Unblock Me and the ota update. She said since yesterday Verizon had her factory reset the phone. She reinstalled all her apps, and it still kept freezing. When in froze this afternoon and it shut down(didn't reboot), she took it strait to Best Buy to have them look at it.
The guy fiddled with it, and it was freezing and rebooting on him as he was messing with settings. He told her it probably needed to be sent in. She doesn't want a refurbished phone if they replace this one, so we are trying to figure it out. But since that visit, the phone has not froze on her. Weird.
Should we uninstall all the apps and install one by one each day to see which may be causing it?
Did you turn power saving off and it still freezing?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
when I checked it, it was already off. I know she had it on, but don't know if the BB guy turned it off or if it was turned off by the factory reset.
If it's still freezing with power save off then I would factory reset it then install the apps that she must have for day to day use. Then give it a day and install the other apps she wants.

I totally agree. :good:
Phones normally only freeze when the ram runs out. Is there any app misbehaving and sucking up all the ram?
I had some what i thought were random reboots the first few months with my N2. These I discovered were caused by carry the N2 in my back pocket of my jeans! Every time I bent down to pick something up or to tie my laces it would reboot!! I would just hear the start up noise comming from my pocket. Make sure she doesn't put it in her skinny-jeans back pocket.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! It froze again this morning, so we are going to factory reset and install apps one by one each day to see who the culprit is. Hopefully its an app doing this.
I have been experiencing EXACTLY that and hqve tried most of the remedies. However this only seems to happen at work which makes it somewhat difficult to actuwlly sot down and diagnose the problem.

I have been reading about this issue from a lot of people with the s3 & note 2 on forums. I honestly think Samsung/Verizon sent out a bad OTA due to rushing to close the security loopholes. I refused the ota and found a way to permanently defer the update and have not experienced any reboots or freezing.
From my previous/recent experience Verizon will absolutely not help you at all, they are worthless 99% of the time. All they are able to do is tell you to factory reset it(if they know how) and have no actual clue how to fix the devices. They will even 'call' the software support for you but will still tell you to either factory reset or do a return. I am disgruntled after they destroyed 3 phones (Droid Incredible) in my family after pushing out horribly bugged OTAs that left the devices useless. I confronted them and they flat out refused to take ownership of their own software that they pushed out. I still feel like they should be sued over what happened.
Good Luck!

Yeah leave it to VZW to fix one thing and introduce a worst bug. I had a Motorola bionic that kept losing signal every 20 minutes or so then version sent out an update damn phone would drop signal every 30 seconds or not even connect to data. Basically rendering the phone useless. Worst part was Motorola had the bootloader locked down so tight there was no good development. At least we have good development for our note 2

Users should legitimately have a lawsuit case against Verizon. They are essentially forcing you to purchase a new device because of something they did. When I confronted them they straight up told me to buy a new device. Devices should work indefinitely theoretically and they are causing irreparable damage.
My note 2 was having major battery drain issues so I got my self back to pure stock like day 1 and I went ahead and updated with the ota so I will see if the random freezing / reboots pick up or not. I already noticed a keyboard bug where it pulls up a numerical only keyboard and wont allow me to type letters unless I reboot.
Did anyone solve this? I'm in the UK and very recently got my ota update. Since then I've been getting multiple daily resets and freezes. Can't say whether it's due to the ota update or some software I've been using, but the crashes are certainly pretty new and very annoying.
