LG G2 Review |After 6 months of use| - G2 General

I have used the G2 since the end of September. So let's see how it stacks up now that all the other flagships have been announced.
LG Gpro 2 features for the G2 http://goo.gl/GpXU9V http://goo.gl/PfxCBb
My cases http://goo.gl/GACxqb
You can follow me on twitter http://goo.gl/WMidl3 and Google+http://goo.gl/ChDEf to keep up with my updates

You might as well call this "review of a G Pro 2 ROM on a G2" since all you did was show off G Pro 2 features.

Too bad it's a video so I won't watch it. A text review is much more easy to follow (for Google ranking too).

You didn't miss anything. Home screen swiping, about screen, etc. Pretty exciting stuff.

Could you find most lagfree ROM based on KK and make vid similar to that? To show off is G2 lag free after 6 month and latest ROMs or is it still has lags. In mentioned vid its basically apps starting and scrolling and swiping and snowing that OneM8 is super lagfree device even smoother that N5

That English is so damn awesome.Stay counting 2 milli seconds of lag that I can't even see.The G2 is the only device that makes me not desire anything atm and I certainly would not upgrade for a millisecond of lag.Don't know why people come up with stupid arguments!

LG G2 slower than Nexus 4

I've just updated my old phone, the N4, to 4.4. Figured it was time to do some comparisons.
Basically I've had the phones side by side, and done the same operations simultaniously.
The N4 is totally clean and has nothing on it yet. The G2 is a week old and has some stuff on it.
The results are as follows:
Opening Dialer app - Takes approx 1sec on N4, 2.5sec on the G2
Opening the camera app - 1 sec on the N4, 2.5-3sec on the G2
Opening the Maps app - faster on the N4
Searching for a location: The N4 is faster at determining it's own location, faster at finding the route, smoother at panning to the location. The G2 has animation problems here.
QuickOffice - Near instant on N4, 1.5-2.5secs on G2
Home-button - The N4 got back to the home screen in less than a third of the time. Might have something to do with me havinga couple of widgets on the G2, but still.
Nova Launcher on the G2 had some suggestions of micro stutter while navigating, the stock google launcher on the N4 was 100% fluid.
It's tempting for me to just sell the G2 again, and go back to the N4, although I'll miss the perfect screen, great camera and amazing sound quality. The G2 is great on paper, but I'm just having a really tough time loving it.
Sell it asap then, the earlier you will, the less money you lose.
You're right. I'm gonna flash an AOSP rom first and see how I like it Seeing as the sound quality will probably be preserved and there's an LG camera app for AOSP ported by this great community. Hopefully the launch of N5 will drizzle som rom interoperability on the G2 community too.
I have both, and indeed the Nexus 4 is faster at navigating the home screen, opening apps, opening the dialer.
However, once you start doing some real stuff like opening a web page or web browsing, email navigation, Facebook app navigation, etc. there is no contest whatsoever, G2 is significantly faster. Camera is also faster to open and operate on the LG G2.
You're right about what you say. even my old phone galaxy nexus 3 is faster at opening some basic apps like call log, camera and messaging. but what makes me bother was its charging cycle per day, some days it would be three(3g is open through the day, indispensable for me) so i bought lg g2. On the upshot, as you say N4 is faster for daily use than lg g2(except bench tests which make no sense for those like me), if you can bare its battery performance, just go for it
Flash cm and all be Ok
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
The Nexus 4 will be quicker in navigating the home screen and opening stock apps as 4.4 Kit Kat has significant optimizations in the code allowing it to run much more smoothly on lower end devices and seeing as the G2 is on 4.2, it doesnt have these optimizations. Once the G2 has 4.4 you will notice the G2 will run circles round the N4

Thanks for the info... but these "comparison threads" are pretty pointless and almost always degenerate into arguing.
Hence the reason why I'm closing this one.
Change governor to interactive and turn on temperature priority. See is that helps you out.
No lag at all, phone dialer takes less than a second to open.

Just put an aosp rom on your g2 and change the governor and wamo no difference
Edit: I also have an n4 with kk on it....I should know

LG needs to fix the ui lag when opening up stock apps, the dialer stutters sometimes when changing tabs left n right. 4.4 update should address performance issues. G2 Zooming and scrolling in browser will run circles on the Nexus 4 easily. S800 adreno 330 no slouch.

Nexus 5 or G2

Hey guys, I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S4 and I'm planning on replacing it with either the Nexus 5 or the G2. I still can't decide which phone to choose. I like the fast updates on the Nexus 5, as well as the UI, however they can be gotten as well through custom roms. On G2, I like the slightly bigger screen, the edge to edge feel of it (it's more noticeable on the G2 than on the N5), removable battery and sd card support (and maybe the camera too). So, as you might notice, I'm leaning more towards the G2. I just want to know how the AOSP scene is on G2 (since I definitely won't be sticking with LG's OS)? Are the bugs pretty much ironed out? Does it get fairly fast updates too (like, how long after KitKat went out did G2 get a KitKat rom)? I assume the pretty identical specs of both phones helped out G2's development, or am I wrong?
So anyway, thanks in advance to whoever answers my questions
PS: Just want to know how G2 is doing in AOSP Development as compared to N5. Please don't make this a straight-up comparison. Thanks
Ask the same question in N5 general IMO you are probably going to get more development for the N5. But the ROMs here are pretty good.
I went for the G2 because you can always change software, but you are stuck with the hardware.
I prefer the long battery life, the better camera and the overall design of the G2. I don't know your needs though.

Well, the mods are going to close this thread soon, but go with the G2. We already have a stock 4.4 rom (check original section), with additional mods getting made to it. So, updates really shouldn't be a problem... But if want official updates then lol. LG probably rolls out updates slower than any company out here, even for their flagship phones.

Well, that won't be a problem, since I have no interest whatsoever in using LG's OS lol. Thanks for your input. Hope the mods don't close this, at least for a little while longer

Well, I doubt N5's users would know how G2's development is stacking up compared to theirs
The phones cost the same here in my country, I think the 32GB version of the Nexus 5 (which isn't available yet, only the 16GB) would be even more expensive than the 32GB G2. So just a couple of questions: Are there still bugs in the 4.4 ROM of G2? And how long after 4.4 went out did G2 get it? 1 week? 2 weeks? LOL

I don't think we know that much more about N5 development than they do about G2 development
The first 4.4 alpha ROM arrived last thursday. It still has bugs, but I have used it as a daily driver. The only problem that I had was that it wouldn't run ART yet. There may be other problems that I didn't run into. But it still says alpha so it's not completely done yet

Exactly. That was one of my reason to chose the G2 above the N5 as well. Compared 4 N5s from colleagues with a G2 and all the N5 Screens looked bit odd compared to the G2.
And i +1 that "you can change Software but you can't change Hardware"

g2 is better for me. camera, and especially the most important thing is the battery. this thing is a beast. what good a phone is if you're often attached to a wall charger.

I think this pretty much sums it up. These were exactly my thoughts when I was deciding between the two also, and that's not even mentioning the IR blaster and soem nice featires the LG ROM has that you might like (knock on and off, QSlide apps, etc.)

OP wants to run AOSP, so I just thought I would mention that the IR blaster app is ported to AOSP based ROMs and it works fine.
The camera app is also ported with a few bugs but mostly working.

Well, looks like I'll be joining you guys sometime soon I just checked this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512881 and even with all the obvious fanboyism of the N5 owner's, they all agree that the N5's battery is bad. Almost every thread I read there, I see someone complaining with his battery life. Lol )
Just hope G2's development doesn't let me down
EDIT: I do have one more question though. Is it true that the screen is much brighter on the N5 than on the G2? Or is it only because of the software? Is the screen on G2 AOSP as bright as on the N5?

Here is the thing... The Nexus 5 is for folks that want the latest AOSP. But to be honest, I don't see what the difference is. AOSP looks dated and bland, and it makes your new phone look like every other AOSP phone. To me the appeal is not there.
The stock LG UI has more features and functionality. It's a better OS. Yes, there are ROM's, but at the end of the day what do they bring? Few points in a benchmark?
They are typically less featured(because some things end up not being supported properly), they typically have bugs and require workarounds or sacrificing of features, and are less stable.
If your phone is a tool that you rely on daily, get the G2 and leave it stock. It is amazing.
If you just want a toy to tinker with and occasionally make calls or do work, then get the N5 and ROM till your heart's content.
Just swapped the N5 for a G2, why? Well mainly because the N5 has terrible quality issues right now. I had 5 with poor screens, dead pixels and dust under the screen. The G2 software is very odd after running stock, but a few mods here and there have fixed that. No quality issues and its running very nicely, the screen is lovely.

The G2 is brighter if anything, but its control software is a bit odd. Auto doesnt seem to do much, but 100% is eye burningly bright.

I personally don't like LG's OS and have no intention of using it at least for long. I've balanced flashing and using my phone as a phone since the days of my Spica. I've liked AOSP for a long time now but has always been put off by the hardware (where Google always seems to put something below the standards) of the Nexus line. At least until the N5, and even then people are complaining of its battery life. So I thought I should look into its "sibling", the LG G2.
Besides, what would I be doing on XDA if I just buy a phone and leave it as it is? lol
I've had both (I'm on Sprint.) I decided to stick with the LG-G2 because it's so nice. Screen size, colors, battery, camera, buttons on the back, and double tap to turn on/off. The G2 is just a better device, however, if you're planning on getting your next device for development, the N5 will win hands down because it's a universal phone (3 of the 4 major U.S. carriers can use the same model number.
Although, the G2's current development isn't lacking, either (unless you're on Sprint).
We do not allow comparison threads on XDA.

I got a G2 recently and am 93% happy with it.
I was coming form a Nexus 4 and was certain I would get a Nexus 5. At the last minute while looking at the displays in the store and testing how they felt in my hand, I decided to go for the G2.
The missing 7% is the plastic back and the lack of wireless charging. These are both things that are superior on the Nexus 5 that I wish I could have on the G2. Especially wireless charging, the Nexus 4 spoiled me in that regard. It's just so much better for wear and tear on the phone's USB port which had been a problem area for me on my Galaxy S2, plus the tilted charging orb of the Nexus made a handy pseudo-dock. I am still glad I went with the G2 because the screen, battery life, and camera are all better but I do miss the wireless charging and rubberized back of the Nexus 5.

Coming from the Atrix HD I like my G2: big screen, no lag, nice interface. I miss the ability of the Atrix HD file manager to access my PC as remote storage. I know I can do the opposite with wireless storage but when working on the phone it means having to go back and forth to the PC.
to me:
battery - very good
speed - can lag through menus, but ok
camera - i'd say between ok and poor compared with a Note 2 that I owned. photos seems to be fuzzier. + as usual LG photos take too much space (for less better). OIS... this shouldnt be a strength. macro shots are good
memory - if you take many long videos and photos, stock many music and movies in it, this phones not for you. an additional usb storage to move or stock data is required
LG UI... - good, I don't find it too much like some tests say. too bad settings background is white, i would have preferred black. I don't use Slide Aside but it's interesting, sometimes Q-slide and QuickMemo.
Image edition = very poor
Video Editor is really good, too bad you can't use imported photos and videos (some videos may work).
weather app - not really accurate
voice mate - don't use it. just did a few times just for fun
keyboard - don't like. can't have suggestion when clicking on a word that was mispelled (like Samsung keyboard). the second line of letters doesnt fill the entire space. several keyboard themes is interesting though
microphone - good quality
KnockOn is a ++. I find myself dumb when double tapping on other phones to unlock the screen
all of this coming from stock rom with no "make the phone better" apps.

I just bought a QI tag that fits between the phone and the cover (invisibly) and plugs in to the mini USB. Works like a charm for about £10 :good:
Great phone. For the 3+ months I have had it I haven't had an issue.
-Beautiful screen with minimal bezel
-Great battery 24+hours/5+ hours screen time
-Plenty of dev support
-Big fan of the rear keys + knock on/off
-Fast. Haven't experienced any lag (using Nova Launcher)
Only negative is the slow updates from LG. With a custom skin I don't think updating is as crucial but I want 4.4 so I can use google wallet again

You're in the wrong thread. Post that question in the troubleshooting thread and give all details. Good luck!

Finally impressed.

All I can say is wow. Had this phone for a few days now and it really is the best I've had...
I've had Samsung S3, HTC Sensation, Google Nexus 4 amongst about 20 others.
Here is where I think the LG excels.
Screen. Obviously my first full HD screened phone but just wow. Looks great and just feels right. Decent brightness and viewing angle. Using it at 35 percent brightness suits my usage.
Software. Some of you may have strongly differing opinions here but here goes. Im waiting for official KitKat for UK g2 but I've installed the German Vodafone KitKat. Runs so smooth, nowhere near as bloated as sense or touchwiz. I like the white tabbed menus, I like the few customisation options like icons and the soft buttons. Knock on and off is fantastic less buttons equals less bezel.
Battery. Max screen on time I've come near in my usage on any other phone was maybe 5 hours tops with really light usage. With this phone I'm hitting 8 hours.
Camera. Not a huge user of the cam but compared to other phones I've had I'm getting fantastic results in general day to day. I'm sure low light is where some of you would dispute.

Yup really is.
Good thing is that it seems it will hold its own for a while. There aren't many new chipsets coming out. The SD800 is pretty much it. Even the next gen Galaxy phone is based on it. So we're right at the top as far as performance and compatibility.
i just got my LG G2 (T-MO) a few days ago and i love it even on stock which is rare for me. from what i can tell 4.4 has just rolled out recently which would explain the lack of root methods that do not involve reverting the OTAs and custom T-MO specific roms which is just more for me to look forward to. I even have my work cell forwarding calls to my G2 because of the handset love!

I do want to wait for Xposed to catch up for 4.4

Xposed is working
Send from G2 flex
I recently acquired an LG G2 coming from a nearly 4 year old HTC Desire HD via HTC One Mini (exchanged it for the G2 after a week)
Awesome, awesome, awesome phone.
I'm running stock ROM with a few modifications. I did try PA 4.1 and whilst being more aesthetic it lacked important features for me.
I like the LG overlay a lot.

At LG you can remove the bloatware. At least on KitKat froms for F320. I'm not sure it's the same for other variants.
LG is the next to rise IMO, the G2 is just the beginning. There needed to be a new leader anyways. HTC had their time and Samsung is done.
Do you think you will upgrade to the galaxy s5 or is it worth it. i dont think i will be but unsure right now
I just read that the HTC next one will have double tap to turn on the screen. I guess lg is doing something right.

Well better late than never! Welcome to the G2 boat mate!
The phone is superb except for the camera which struggles to focus in low light condition. Bit even that can be rectified using manual focus, so yeah, it's a superb phone afterall!

the screen also doesnt seem to colorize like samoled with age, old samoled turns yellow. lol. Should hold longer life then samoled.
Only some people reported burn in of colours.
I have bought a g2 16Gb version 1 month ago and still feel very happy about my choice
Was about to get a nexus 5 but the battery and camera of G2 had me going in that direction..
A very good phone, it's worth buying the LG official quickwindow case as well
Im running stock LG unrooted rom and havent felt the need to tweak anything yet, which is weird since my previous phone was a galaxy nexus and during the last months I was used to trying a new ROM every afternoon
FYI 4 colleagues of mine also got a G2 after seeing mine during the last month
Specifically for the 16Gb version, you need to carry an OTG cable and a usb stick if you go on vacation (which may mean limited or no LTE coverage) and want to use the phone to get pictures and video, as video will get the available storage get full rather easy

I changed from a Galxy S4 since one week.
VEEERY Happy so far. Its much faster, battery life is great, and it feels very good in my hands.
Oh and it looks awesome in white

LG G2 lacks TRIM support on Kitkat causing lags?

Well, please guys run a benchmark CF-Bench v1.3 and show screens with Native Disk Write scores. I have 4 to 9 score on my G2
I presume that such a low score indicates lack of TRIM support
Don't know if the stock kernel supports TRIM, but both Dorimax and Renderkernel support it.
My scores are higher on my LG G2 D801 running stock 4.4.2

Anyway, 14 is ridiculously low score compared with any cheap MTK phone which got up to 264
I feel like I've been really cheated and robbed for money by lg

Wow! I didn't realize that phones were scoring that high. I may have to do some digging and see if I can get that number up higher.

What exactly does the TRIM score do that's so important you say you feel robbed by LG? You bought the phone to use as a phone. If it performs great in other tests, why do you feel your TRIM score is that important you're comparing your G2 to cheap phones that don't do half the things the G2 can?
Help me to understand

Good point. I am very happy with this phone after a year, and I have rarely been able to say that about a phone.

This phone should fly and be screaming fast but it doesn't. so that's my complain. the TRIM support means that flash storage should clean up deleted files in a manner that new writes would perform as fast as on the new clean flash. And lack of TRIM means that onboard flash is "fragmented" causing writes to perform very-very slow. So when I bought this G2 year ago apks would install in a blink of an eye, like 3 seconds and it was DONE. But now I'm waiting like 20-30 seconds to update a simple 10-20 apk, and Chrome would take as much as 1 minute to been updated. So you see my point

I've had the same problem with other phones in the past too iPhones included. Found out the phones slow down if the storage space Is almost full like a computer hard drive.
What happens when you clear cache and free up space?
I use this to do manual trim. But i do not know how much trim actually helps.

Thanks guys
Was going to look into this until I read some reviews claiming the app may brick your phone. Use at your own risk
