[Q] Hyperdrive RLS15 - Move Samsung Keyboard to user app? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on Hyperdrive RLS15. Hyperdrive has the Samsung keyboard as a system app. In the interests of paranoia, I'd like to make the Samsung keyboard a user app (not a system app) so I can disable internet access, via AFWall+, XPrivacy, etc.
I tried converting to a user app with Titanium Backup, but that failed (Cannot convert "Samsung keyboard 1.0" to a user app.) I backed up the keyboard with Titanium Backup and copied the apk out of /system/data, then uninstalled the keyboard. I tried installing the apk from ES File Explorer, but that appeared to fail silently - I couldn't select it in Settings. Then I went to Google Play and was going to install from there, but the only choice was to Uninstall, so I did that. Then the option was Update. I tried updating, and again no obvious way to see anything installed.
Last, I restored from Titanium Backup, and I'm back where I started.
My questions:
1) Is there a way to change an installed app from a system app to a user app, given Titanium Backup failed?
2) Is there a way to modify a Titanium Backup backup to change it from a system to a user app?
Thanks

Persistent Data - between Rom swaps

Scenario: Installed Vegan 5 on gtablet. Play angry Birds and get to level 20, input my location into Weatherbug, setup icons in launcher, configure wireless, write a short note in quickoffice and set up network share in Astro. Now, do a clockwork backup of the rom. I wish to now install TNT lite 4.4. Before installing a new rom you usually wipe partitons, etc. then install the rom. After the install I have to do all these things again, including starting over in Angry Birds! Especially annoying is having to set up the desktop again (after I re-install all the apps). What I would like to be able to do is use TNT-lite 4.4 today and tomorrow restore Vegan 5 and have all my user data and settings from today persist into the other rom. I would think settings are stored somewhere that could be preserved between rom installations. Can this be done?
Not going to happen.
You can use Titanium Backup Pro to backup your apps and data (don't backup system apps though) and restore them with your game progress, etc....
But you can't have persistent configuration/data between different ROM installs.

I was afraid that would be the answer. Going the Titanium Backup route - I'm looking at the backup/restore screen at the list of apps. You recommend not backing up system apps. Short of "just knowing" from experience, is there a way to identify system apps in the list? Clearly Angry Birds is not but what about email 2.2, download manager 2.2, etc. I'm pretty sure they are but is there a definite way to tell? Or, can I just backup the whole batch and then only restore things like Angry Birds to retain my game progress?
There are batch options in the Backup/Restore tab that give you a one click backup of what you are looking for.....
Hit the menu button when on the Backup/Restore tab in Titanium Backup and choose "Batch", then "Backup all User Apps" and this will be all the apps you have downloaded and their data (game progress, notes, etc..).

I assume that I need to configure TB tl write to sdcard2 so it can be restored after a different r.o.m is installed? I'm unclear as to what gets wiped during the install/restore process.
/sdcard does not get wiped unless you repartition the device. You can also sync to dropbox in the paid version.

[Q] Cannot restore music.apk with Titanium Backup Pro

Used Titanium Back apps for several months. Had no system problems. Needed a bit more internal memory free and decided to uninstall the stock gingerbread music app ( which i backup and then I uninstalled it) because I use other music players and it has been listed as being safe to remove w/o system probs.
Samsung galaxy y
Stock 2.3.6 Froyo ROM
Before doing anymore uninstalls I wanted to see if i could restore this. Titanium Backup Pro just hangs indefinitely when trying to restore the stock music.apk app. Have to kill it. Using Root Explorer and ES File Manager, I am able to see the app in the system/app folder after doing this but it does not show in the app drawer.
What I've Tried:
1. Contacted Titanium Support. Great guys and very helpful. Cannot stress this enough and the app is awesome. They suggested taking the apk from the backup files and moving it using adb.
Result: Moved the file but would not show up in app drawer.
2. Found the stock music.apk in system/app folder using Root Explorer
Result: Tried rebooting. Did not work. Tried factory reset from Privacy Menu. Still not in app drawer.
please help guys!!!!!!!!!!!! how to fix this????
Have you tried clearing the data for Music app? When I've restored apps with Titanium, sometimes the data is corrupted or something and I have to clear the data.
You can always try uninstalling it and pushing a new music program with adb.

[Q] Titanim backup - how to resore an app from .TiBkp

I've created a backup called "app +data (easy import)".
Now I can't find any option to restore an app from this backup.
Not from dropbox nor from a titanium backup folder.
Titanium does not see this file and says there is no backup for that app.
So how to restore an app from this kind of backup??
Try clicking on the backup file either in Dropbox or the local file system and running it. Titanium Backup will then ask if you want to restore the app and or data. I know I saved my backup in Gmail, and after downloading, I just press view in Gmail itself and TiBackup will show that dialog.
Sent from my HSPA+ Nexus Prime using Tapatalk 2
it was enough to update to the nevest verssion.
Now I have a bigger problem.
It does not restore any data of system apps.
Not Go Launcher, nor Go sms, or rom settings are being restored.
I've tried to flash the rom again an then restore - no result.
How to force titanium to restore system apps data?
ps. I was able to do it before. It's just stopped working.
Hi I am having similar problems, backed up using easy backup apk & data, sent via gmail to my other phone with Titanium backup on it, when I open it TB recognises it and says please wait, but nothing happens the app does not install. It is only a widget that I want installed but its not having it :crying:
Also I have a tf101 which is not rooted is there anyway I can unzip without TB to use this free widget as its not on the general market, I have a paid version of TB and using the latest release, but obviously not on the tf101.
Any help appreciated as it is frustrating I cannot save apks to other phones.
Thanks

I never found the correct answer to this question, which - from my experience - is a rather improbable one. This is the answer:
Find your TiBkp file with some kind of file explorer. In my case: I used "root explorer", probably any other one will do as well. Tap on it.
You will see: "No activity found to open this file."
Your options are
a) cancel
b) open as.
Choose "open as".
Now you get a lot of options (I see seven). One of them is: APK file. Choose it.
Now you may select an "option for null" (probably the null refers to the unknown file extension TiBkp) .
The options are: cancel, view and Install.
Choose install.
Now you get the option from Titanium backup to restore your files. And that works perfectly.....
Cheers :victory:
Hello, i Know this thread is old, but i seem to have run into the same problem. My tibkp file is grayed out and i can't access it. and when i navigate to it and try to open it, it won't give an option to open it with Titanium. Help please. Thank you
PS I have a rooted S7 Edge. Thank you
Hm.. I'm having a similar issue: I can't import .TiBKP files anymore; two devices, S6 Edge running SuperSU-rooted nougat, and Tab S2 running magiskSU-rooted nougat (in both cases the nougat itself is from samsung)
Hello im having troubles backing up an app.
Whenever i back up i get three files (.apk .tar and one PROPERTIES) instead of the .TiBkp. I cant restore said files.
Help please.
New phone, Old problem. Trying to use .TiBKP files to migrate apps&settings from my old phone to my new one, rather than just simply copy everything using smart switch, but opening them in Titanium Backup is NOT an option for .TiBKP files.
Any hints?

Tiatanium Backup issue

I have TiBu Pro installed, and I have my user apps Backup saved to my extSdCard.
After installing the ROM, and then TiBu, the number (58) of User apps are showing in the Batch actions - ALL seen under:
Verify all your backups,
Recovery mode,
Delete backups
But they are Not showing under 'Restore missing apps with data.'
How to I direct TiBu to Restore the User apps from the extSdCard?
The Backup folder in TiBu is showing:
/storage/extSdCard/TitaniumBackup
and my User apps are there.
Thanks
Does the folder name on the ext sd card have to be a specific format?
I'm holding off on using My Backup Pro to Restore
Update:
I got the user apps to appear. I'm not sure how, but this time I was asked if I want to install the previous ID, which I did. I'm not sure if I was prompted previously.
In addition, in Preferences, I couldn't use Hypershell, as the apps wouldn't install. I had to choose Interactive for the apps to install, and give Permission to each app individually, but at least I got them to install.
Auto: Indirect
Auto: Direct
Wouldn't install,
But choosing:
Interactive
did install the apps.

Titanium Backup cannot restore any uninstalled apps

I have granted root access with Magisk, and I'm using the paid PRO version of Titanium Backup. The app can freeze/unfreeze apps fine, and it (seems to) backup apps fine. But, whenever I try to restore an uninstalled app, it says "Restoring App+Data" and never progresses further. I have to force close the app. What should I do?
I also have this problem.
Someone said that UNchecking the developer options: "[ ] Verify apps over USB" worked to fix this.
