Depends on what your options are... The best would be to get a Developer Edition of any of the premium phones. However, these are typically only available online and/or at full retail, so probably not gonna be much of an option there. Otherwise, most of the phones from VZW are gonna have a much smaller dev community for a couple reasons: they are still mostly CDMA and much of the development goes for the GSM versions because they share much more with worldwide phones so it is easier to port or use different mods across the carriers AND VZW specifically asks the manufacturers to lock the bootloader, which creates all kinds of trouble for those wanting custom recoveries and kernels. All of the newer Android flagships are great phones in some manner or another. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. You just have to figure out which features are most important because no phone does everything perfectly and everyone uses their phone differently. Things to consider:
Battery life - Do you HAVE to have your phone make it all day?
Prefer something with a removable battery?
Screen / phone size - How big is too big?
Do you need external storage?
Camera quality / speed
Are you being given a budget or just carte blanche?
Is AOSP / CM a MUST...? Because with the locked bootloader situation for most VZW phones, you'll have to research that for feasibility (and stablity)...
Do you need any other special features like Miracast, DLNA, USB OTG, etc?
Are you an accessories fan? Not all phones have that many aftermarket accessories.
So, that's a good starting point at least to start weighing pros and cons.
In NO particular order, here are the best phones from VZW to consider:
Samsung Galaxy S4 / S5
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
HTC One M7 / Max / M8
LG G2
Moto X
Moto Droid Ultra / Maxx

Two words: hell yes. I'm leading towards the note 3 at the moment. Seems like the community is in good shape for that one.

Anyone actually do a hands on comparison here?

True, though as long as I have cm10 or something similar and a debloated rom I will be 100% happy.

Maybe, but a lot of the nexus development will carry over easily.
Sent from my LG Optimus G.
I'm on the fence between this and the nexus 4. I was at the at&t store the other day holding the OG and it wasnt that bad. I know quadrant scores are nothing to make a final decision on but was impressed, it was getting similar scores to the htc one x+ averaging no less than 7500. The note 2 couldnt get that high. Its true that the led notification is only one color? I thought it was RGB? I couldnt really test that at that store.
Would ROM's from our Nexus 4's really work on the OG? Loving the N4 but I also like the OG.

My justification on getting the LG Optimus G on At&t (it being on At&t is an important distinction):
1.) The phone is the basis for the Google Nexus 4, save it's design is nicer. I perfer the blocky lock. This also means it is currently hardware wise the strongest SoC in a phone on the market. This will change within the hour (j/k) but for what it's worth you have that.
2.) 2gb RAM. This is important particularly in the Android domain, as the more RAM you have the less application crashing and home screen crashing you will have. This crashing behavior is apparent on my current mini pro (only has 512 meg RAM) and the iPad 1 (only has 256 meg RAM) which both crash almost constantly.
3.) Expandable memory. It has a microSD slot. The Nexus 4 does not, and the Optimus G international and Sprint versions do not.
4.) LTE. This is nice but not really that serious to me I've been happy with what the mini has been able to provide (3g+). Still i should be able to get faster speeds on my phone the my home connection.
5.) the phone has already been rooted.
6.) unlocking of the bootloader is being worked on, and there are clear signs it can be accomplished. If this were to happen you could put whatever ROM you want on the phone. The obvious choice, being the Nexus 4 ROM. Since the hardware is almost identical, minus wireless charging in the G, this would almost a be plug and play option. The robust XDA crowd will have it sorted in now time. Which means you'd have a Nexus 4 on a better more expandable platform, with LTE.
7.) Price. Subsidized it's $100-150 cheaper. Since you'll be paying for the wireless plan anyway why not lock yourself in? That said, I FULLY support Google's initiative by making the phone affordable, unlocked, and off contract. I believe anything that gives the consumer more choice should be applauded. The wireless carrier systems in the US are just out dated and stupid.
So I wrote this before the unlock was solid, and but now that we know it's unlocked and custom ROMs are a go this phone makes an even better choice. So now you can have it all.

Minus the development support. I understand the bootloader has been currently unlocked, but it's definitely gonna be a while til we see the devs start jumping on this. Just my opinion. Trust me, I am really hoping this device takes off. Getting tired of Samsung and lack of source for the Exynos phones.
Is there a list of devs that will be supporting this device?
My N4 won't be here til 3 to 5 week says Google. But since LTE launched in my area, this phone seems to the best choice for me.
In the meantime, good luck guys, I will be following with great interest.

I think there is going to be a ton of development for this device. For one, anything done on the Nexus 4 will be trival to port over (look at the history of the Nexus S and the Galaxy S). Secondly, it's a flagship phone launched globlly on every major carrier. A crapload of people will have this phone.
The biggest barrier to development I see right now is there are 4 different development forums for this phone and it's ALREADY splintering... I wish they would keep just 1 development forum as once it gets going the same ROMs will work on all the variants, nearly guarenteed. The S3 had the same issue with way too many splintered dev. forums.

The Galaxy S1 phones were fragmented too but we got CM ROMs pretty nicely. The Vibrant died off fast but the Captivate stayed strong. So as long as the Optimus G gets a decent fanbase of developers we should be ok. I'm worried about too many people flocking to Nexus 4 given its price though.
If it is really trivial to port ROMs over, we need some bare minimum support on our side to make sure development goes smoothly at least.

The phones have similar guts, not the same guts.
It's like putting a ROM on an Inspire4g when the ROM is supposed to be for a Desire HD.
Fixes will be necessary in order to have functionality.

similar? they should be the exact same... same SoC and i believe same camera. i'll have to do more research on this but it should just take tweaking a few files that's very very simple if you've ported ROMs before (i have).
edit: yes, the cam module should be the same. the modem *should* be the only thing different.

Should I buy SGS3?

I had HTC Desire for nearly 3 years, and it is a great phone, but I think it is time to upgrade, because:
- it is annoyingly slow with my regular set of programs installed, even on fastest available roms
- it doesn't have kernel 3.0, and because of that JB roms have shortcomings
- a little bit too small screen for GPS navigation
- really crappy camera
- somewhat short battery life
Some time ago I had a chance to look at Galaxy S2 in person and it looked like a perfect phone (at least for 2 minutes I had it in my hands).
Somewhat bigger screen, more internal storage, kernel 3.0.
I use custom roms, so big development community is important for me. I have been spoiled by Desire as it (still) has a large one.
Galaxy S2 would cost me around 170-200 euro to get it.
Then there is S3, which looks like a better phone alltogether, even if more expensive (~350 euro).
But the doubts about that one after reading user opinions are:
- quite dark screen, worse than One X
- bad build quality
- flimsy home button
- external speaker on pair with Desire
I would welcome SGS3 owners views on the above.
My general requirements (compared to HTC Desire):
- larger screen (not necessarily much larger)
- solid build quality
- large development community
- noticeably faster CPU than Desire (Dual+ core would come in handy)
- microUSB
- good/very good camera
- good battery life
- have a good and loud external speakers for listening to podcasts
- would be nice if it had FM transmitter (not receiver) but it is not necessary
- it must by BLACK or therebout
the s3 fits each one of those requirements.....
Hi there. I was an owner of HTC Desire for 2 years. I loved that device and still have it in my drawer. I recently bought a Galaxy S3 to upadgrade my old DS. The transfer from Desire to Desire S was something logical to me back then. Almost the same device but newer software. I was searching for a new phone and I thought that one X was the only road for me. I had a chance to compare one X with SGS3 side by side. The screen on one X has more natural colors for me and I think the sound quality is better. Honesty I picked the SGS 3 cause of the community that has here in xda the removal battery the sd card slot and I think the camera quality is better. Im still new here and haven't managed to explore the hole forum but I found a lot of things and I'm amazed by the community

Get the S4 i9505. Better dev support due to no exynos. Get 2nd hand
Got to be honest, if i was in your shoes, i wouldn't. Not for 350€. Would be a different thing if you had an awesome deal at hand, but if you're just getting them from a regular store, for the full price, no.
I've seen you don't require neither external sd nor an removable battery so i'd easily go with a nexus 4 if i could. Around same price point, best bang for the buck specs wise. Also, you get updates directly from google instead of waiting forever for samsung
If you're not into the nexus 4 (which isn't easy to come by for every country) you may want to take a look at the oppo find 5. Seems a fantastic phone, has even better specs than the nexus and therefore a bit more expensive. Easy to get in europe and they even throw in a few extras like NFC tags and a (flip?) cover for your phone. Also the developer openly encourages custom roms so there shouldn't be a problem having updates.
Moar ram (this is REALLY important on the S3 since 1Gb is not nearly enough for a samsung rom), no-bul**** touchwiz with a lightfast pure aosp rom (with the nexus) or anything close with the oppo and no exynos with closed sources, making custom roms not being able to be all they can. You won't get some somewhat useless bells and whistles (smart stay, camera effects, multiwindow, etc) but that can almost all be reinstated with 3rd party apps if needed. Samsung has a bad history of kind of neglecting their phones who're not flagships anymore - by this i mean they say they will update but only when convenient to them and that means waiting forever with no ETA at all. Not to mention you may get a unit with the screwed up chip which is apparently not in danger of suddently dying anymore but it's fix has been reported causing severe lag. It's not a bad phone at all, it's just there are better alternatives out there.
The S2 though is still a fantastic phone and it's probably the cheaper you'll get. It's just it's old and most likely not supported (or about to be, not sure) by samsung by now.

This is a really good point.
I think the price points are still a little high
You should expect after September 5 or so, and then check prices for:
- i9300 unlocked new and second-hand; IMHO the best thing about it is the form factor + huge availability of ROMs; major downside = only 1 GB RAM
- i9305 unlocked new and second-hand; it fixes the problem with just 1 GB and also has LTE, but much less development and fewer ROMs to choose
- N7100 (note 2) unlocked new and second-hand; IMHO a good choice that fixes most problems with i9300 and i9305, BUT creates a new one - size; that one is a deal killer for me
- also look at the prices for note 3 (will be launchd around September 4-5) and i9505 (might drop a little, eventually the i9506 might become available).
Thanks guys.
- I never used stock rom on any android phone I had. I root and install custom rom instantly, so I am no bothered by Sense or Touchwiz or whatever bloat there is in stock.
- Nexus 4 has one major flaw - only 16gb, and not expandable. In my Deisre, I have a 16gb card and btween GPS maps, podcasts and backups, I am almost constantly out of space. Plus, it has lesser camera, and screen.
- SGS3 would be in silicon cover anyway, so I don't care much about the build quality EXCEPT for the front panel/home button.

SGS3's problem is that AOSP devs cannot make ROMs as quickly (or make the "fully functional" as quickly) due to having an Exynos CPU. I personally would look for an S4 i9505 2nd hand if I wanted a good phone with AOSP support. It has no Exynos.
S4 is way to expensive for me.
How about HTC One X?

In the UK I found a 2nd hand i9505 for £330, 384 Euros on buy it now (ebay).
Wait a month or two, it will be lower. Worth considering. Or look for an auction instead. I'm confident it can be done.
Oh you didn't mention the need for more than 16gb. That actually weights in a lot. The oppo finder 5 should be a good candidate then, I believe it's the best price you can get for a phone with those specs that already brings 32gb (if bought new)
If you understand and don't mind the exynos, the 16gb+sdcard lte s3 is also an option (2gb ram), not sure about prices though.
Also, for what's worth, I've compared the camera of my s3 with the n4. Didn't think it was all that different apart from effects I don't really use. Phones are cool for the casual shot (and actually take very decent ones) but if it's serious quality I'm after, nothing beats a good, dedicated camera.
Edit: oops didn't realise you couldn't spend more than 350. I still wouldn't get the s3 and would wait out for the prices to get lower. Still, if you must change your phone now, for that price point, with your requirements is probably the best bet.

I am not sure what is the problem with S3 cpu. S3 seems to have great support community, a lot of roms, etc. I do not really care if I have the newest subversion of Android available on my phone 5 days after the newest Android was released.
I just want it to work, and I couldn't care less if I have to wait a month, or 3 months for Android 4.3, if I have fully workin 4.2.2, with great battery life, photograps, excellent GPS, screen, and pretty great for a mobile audio quality (headphones, and speakerphone).
Considering that, would you still disadvice me an S3? I looked at prices of S4 and even 380 euro is a bit of a stretch, considering I wanted to spend 200 euro initially, and 300 for S3 is already a significant budget enlargement.
And what about HTC One X? Would that be better than S3?

2. S3 camera is one of the best among mobile phones

1. Cyanogen refused to release 10.1 as "stable" release. Remains nightly build forever due to lack of exynos sources and documentation. Same with 10.2
2. Touchwiz rom camera great. Since samsung didn't release camera HAL, aosp camera not very good.
3. Loads of aosp roms. None meet their own potential due to the issues mentioned above.
4. Battery life poor on aosp roms.
S3 is great of you're happy with touchwiz. Bloated and slow but good pics and great battery life. But if you know you'll be using aosp roms, its a poor choice - and im sure any aosp dev would agree with that. Yes there's lots of choice. I even use aosp all the time but it cannot exploit the devices potential.
Also a lot of devs are starting to move on now. Kernel development for aosp is down to about 3 or 4 good ones.
Im trying to be Frank and save you buying a dying devices thinking it will be as good as you think it is. I wish I had known about the exynos issue before buying. Would I have held out and bought something else? Probably not. It was the only device that met my requirement 14 months ago. That said, would I recommend it now? No.

[Q] Which smartphone should I buy after my SGS3?

Hi Guys!
I was wondering. I really love my SGS3.
i have CM11 on it and love the hardware, camera, etc.
But it has come that time of year that my carrier needs to keep me as a costumer, and I can get a good discount on a new phone.
But I was wondering, which phone is as good as my s3?
I dont know If i want to just upgrade to s4, i think there are better phones out there, like Nexus 5 or Motorola Moto X. I also read some things about LG G2.
Thank you in advance for the answers
I'm the same, after looking at a few phones I've opted for the Note 3. Larger screen, plenty power, 3GB ram...most have only 2GB.
Hopefully quite future proofed.

If Sumsang proceeds with its current agenda- zone restricted devices, unique & unfriendly developers-support CPUs, and low-quality releases + weighty stock roms, I don't see any reason to prefer Samsung over other companies...
The S3 is a great device, and the huge developers community will ensure its relevance for long time.
Anyway- I think that the Xperia Z1 is the most attractive device for now: Powerful and very common chipset, water & dust proof, heavy-duty battery, AWESOME CAMERA, very clean stock rom, nice screen, fancy look & feel, and extendable SD up to 64Gb

The z1 option its really good as well! But the nexus 5, though with 4.4 and being a Nexus lacks of a great camera and battery life as I have read (also it just got here in brazil this week, so the'll put the price really high)

Nice choice :good::good: but make sure to take the 32Gb model, because no extended sd.

sh**t! This is a bad thing! I don't know if we have the 32gb in brazil.
Oh well, I'll search for it
I think best cost-benefit option in Brazil right now is the Moto X. I like the Nexus 5 too, but it's more expensive. If you don't mind the buttons in the back (I don't think I would adapt to that), the LG G2 seems a good option too.
S5
Wait for the S5, it comes out either in march or June 2014.
it has an aluminium body and better MP camera with more cool features.
google is your friend.
Thanks to all of you!!
I'm buying the G2...
I've seen some reviews, watched some videos and my carrier made a good discount on the phone!
Also, I can install the current CM that I have on my SGS3.

Note 3 would be too large for me, because I like putting the phone in my trousers pocket.
The S5 seems to be promising since its size should be similar to S3/S4 but is has updated hardware and higher display resolution.
I read that Samsung is going to release 2 versions - one with plastic body and Snapdragon 805 SoC and one with aluminium body and Exynos 6.

How does future dev support look?

I'm currently stuck between the LG V10 and Nexus 6p. The only thing stopping me from buying the V10 is the dev support. Do you think with the international version launching that the V10 will have more support? Cause the sd slot, changeable battery and the second screen is really calling to me but if it will barely have any dev support it's a deal breaker for me
Thanks for your answers!
If you want dev support then you have to have phones that dev can work with.
For devs to do much they need to be able to modify the software.
The carries (read ATT & Verison) are focused on making it harder to get this level of access.
The exceptions are phones targeted at the dev community like the Nexus 6p, or providers that are willing to give dev access (read T-Mobile).
I don't see this phone getting much developer support unfortunately. I mean it's only been out for what 4 months but it's pretty pricey and the G4 is virtually the same phone at a cheaper price.
That being said I love the V10 outside of the rather dissappointing battery life the secondary screen is fantastic for multitasking (especially when playing music in the background). It runs very smooth, the default setup is pretty vanilla and there isn't a bazillion junk apps like there is with Samsung phones.
I would wait if development support is important to you.
Nexus will probably get more support bc of its pure android but once the v10 got supported, it's probably more funs and stuffs do to with.

What should my next phone be? AT&T

Hey I have a s8 that is still working good I'm just looking to see what my next should be. I was bummed not being able to put a ROM on this one, so I'd like the next phone to be able to be modded and bootloader unlocked.
Which phones do you suggest?

Thats great but when nobody replies for days...
Just looking for what phones are bootloader unlockable/ROM capable
@JamesRF
Technically, there is a way to unlock the bootloader on any Android phone, but doing so can be very difficult for some models. Their unlocking difficulty depends on the manufacturer. For example, Nexus is unlockable by default. HTC, Xiaomi, Motorola, and OnePlus phones are also fairly easy to unlock.
BTW:
AT&T isn't a manufacturer but simply a shop when it comes to cellphones / smartphones

You have some great options in terms of roms for the S8, it's still a brilliant phone (Except for OneUI, personally not a fan of it), look into something like a Xiaomi K20 Pro (Top tier performance, good design, very cheap, but has MiUI, which is cancer, fortunately, it's one of the most widely supported devices by custom roms).

You should be more specific with what you want.
Do you want a budget phone?
Do you want a mid range phone?
Do you want a flagship?
Do you want a small phone?
Do you want a big phone?
Etc.
A lot of phones in each or this categories can be unlocked.

Ok...i'll be as specific as possible. Its not necessary to have a flagship phone and I'd like a phone around the same size as the s8. I really would like my next phone to be able to put different ROM and customize android.

There are a lot of ROMS for the s8, however since I have At&t its locked and unable to use them.
I'm thinking a Oneplus* or Pixel*
Thoughts? Other phones you suggest?
