S5 rated better battery life than G2 - G2 General

Is this a joke? Android Authority rated the S5 with better battery life than G2 on most test cases...
Samsung Galaxy S5 triumphs in battery life tests

So what?

It also completely blows away the G2 in the gingerbread gradient department.

No idea about the s5 but, in those test results, the note 3 seems to compare favourably to the g2. My wife has a note 3 so I can quote from experience that the g2 crucifies the note 3 in every way regarding battery life.

Then get the s5. But I doubt it.

If you check the pictures better, you'll see it features the Korean LG G2 with 2610 mAh battery ... So, the international one should have a lot better battery life ...

It was a joke A lot of elements of the TouchWiz UI still have the same old gradients as they did in the gingerbread days. I can't stand them. They mix so poorly with rest of the design elements.

The Galaxy S5 lasted over 21 hours of 3G calls. That puts it ahead of the HTC One (M8) by an hour, three ahead of the Galaxy Note 3, but well behind the impressive 25 hour result of the LG G2.

Yes it is better then G2, but only with super-duper ultra mega awsome stamina mode they have. With that mode you can just recieve calls on black display without knowing who is calling you

S5 brand new. G2 6 months old. Who cares? Do you honestly expect that in the extremely rapid turnover cycle which is cell phones, for one that's 6 months old to remain king forever? Everything you buy in electronics is generally outdated the day you buy it. Get over it. I'll have this phone for 3-4 years as long as I don't break it. It's a great phone and I really don't care that new phones are definitely going to beat it in specs.

S5 is a new generation phone, but i don't think it better battery life than G2, G2 too excellent.

I think the battery technology is at a plateau currently, the focus is now on energy efficient hardware.

Should I buy the s3 or wait for the next gen/other phones?

So I was planning on buying the s3 but I can't seem to make my mind up on it. There are a lot of reasons why I can't decide. It's not in my budget but adding $100 dollars will do the trick. Anyway, is it worth the price? is it future-proof?(I've read that manufacturers are developing full-hd res screens but who needs it?) How long will it last til dev support abandons it?
I'm the kind of user who's really in to multimedia and tweaking and I want this phone to last two years until I buy a new one. So can anyone recommend me this phone or recommend something else? What do you think?
P.S. I own an O2x right now and I love it but devs aren't supporting it much right now and I just bought this phone last november(which is a really bad step for me considering the fact that it's a year old in the market and i think the processor won't last). Thanks for your help in advance!
Wait till the new nexus comes out, and then see how the comparisons stack up.....but the bottom line is today's technology is always yesterday within 6-12 months.....I thought long and hard but then I happened to go on eBay and got my S3 for £390 brand new, 500 in the shops, so I'm happy

It's the best phone you can buy right now. Dev support is strong as the phone is extremely popular. The galaxy s 2 was and still is today a huge seller with great dev support and this phone is no different.
Future proof? It will still be a good phone in two years. Sure other phones would have come along with better spec but it will still hold its own.
I for one have a compulsion when it comes to phones, I've replaced many over a short period due to shortcomings in one area or another. This is the first phone I'm really happy with and might actually keep for at least a year.
Not much in the horizon anyway in terms of android phones. The only competition to this beast is the one x and that thing is good but no removable battery or expandable storage and battery life also sucks compared to this.

how does your s3 feel in processing power? I read that theyre laggy at times but not most. I want to know what I can get for the money before i invest on this phone
Low bench mark scores , app monitor missing, no social hub alot of stock apps not there. Google wallet not supported yet. It eats up memory ram pretty good but over all it's pretty good solid phone.

For me it`s not laggy at all, i rooted the phone and flashed Siyah 1.3.8a and undervolted 50 Mv. It`s running stable, fast and has good battery life. But out of the box the phone is also good. It also depends on how many apps and widgets you have installed and are running in the background.

Running slim here as I don't care for Samsung gimmick apps and it rocks, super fast, stable, just had 7+ hrs screen on....totally happy coming from S1, as usual Samsung software causes all the problems...No lag, no fc, no moans....just joy, joy, joy

Developer support for the galaxy s1 is still as good as the s3's so it's safe to say that the s3 will continue to be supported for several years.
There will be no next-gen phone until next year. Any phone released this year could only hope to be better in terms of ram. Nothing else.
The s3 will last until at least 2015.

First uninstall your task killer, it`s not a solution but a problem. It messes up android task management and causes lags!
Second it off course depends ho many apps/widgets you have running in the background.
Third don`t say stuff to and about users that you are not sure about or do not know.

dilemma to upgrade to G2

Hi friends, i have been owning htc one x since nearly 20 months now, and i feel the urge to upgrade due to the pathetic battery issues of the phone... I was eying the new htc one m8, however the ugly black bold bezels are a deal breaker for me... I am eager to switch to the G2 however should i wait for the sony z2 to be reviewed? So i'm confused between the G2 and Z2.. One thing that annoys me though is the non expandable memory on G2.. Also the G3 is around the corner, is it worth a wait?? Thanks

Honestly I think the G2 is worth every penny. So if you are looking to get a new device soon, I would highly recommend it.
Of course, if there is no hurry, there is no reason not to wait for future devices. If you absolutely must have the latest of the latest, then I suppose waiting is an option, but if you want a high quality device at this time, the G2 is an excellent option!
I had a One X, which I killed... Argh. In between, I had a Nexus 4. But from what I recall, you're in for a shock with regard to battery life if you decide on a G2. I just clocked 6:30 screen on time and I'm at 10% now, plus a day's standby and this is only my first charge cycle. I considered myself lucky to get 2:30 out of the One X!

I had and loved my Note 3 on Sprint but we switched to ATT and the G2 on contract for free was a no brainer. Its easy to get excited for each new Flagship with all the hype out there but honestly this is a phone one can use for years and be totally content.
thank you friends.. i will get the g2.. and you have rightly said that the new flagships can be very tempting with the hype around them...
I think the new gen smartphones are a let down. The HTC M8 only has a 4.7" screen and about the same size as the G2, also has a smaller battery. The Galaxy S5 also has a smaller screen and battery, but it noticeably bigger in size.
The M8 can't do 4k or 120fps camera either with its 4MP camera. The GS5 doesn't have OIS. G2 camera is better still.
Each has their own perks such as fingerprint scanner and dual flash dual camera, but I dunno. Seems gimmicky. G2 just seems to be better where it counts. Plus there is lots of development with the G2.
The newer phones are using a SnapDragon 801, which is the same chip, just slightly better optimized. Outside of benchmarks, it probably won't be noticeable. Not worth taking a hit on screen size or battery or camera for.

Why I do agree with you on certain things. I do believe some things are being worked on BETTER. Like "software" optimization for battery life. I understand that some phones are coming with smaller battery life's but perhaps its a better quality type of battery and plus better battery optimization software like HTC extreme battery save. I believe they should also work on software opt in every aspect.
As for screen size. I personally wouldn't want anything bigger than the lg g2. But that's me.
But hopefully for the next lg g3 I would Like to see the rumored specs: own Odin 8 core proccesor, 16mp better ios, 2k resolution t" display, maybe SD card slot, bettttttttterrrrrrrr software ui and optimization, finger and iris scanner. Etc. That phone I would get!!

Can anyone tell me about that Optimus UI, because, from what I have seen it reminds me on Touchwizz which I personally dont like. So I'm thinking about taking Nexus 5 or G2 and I just can't decide. Currently, I have Galaxy Nexus and I like it because it's easy to root and bootloader is easily unlockable. But on the other side I really like g2's big battery and bigger screen. So, if anyone could comment me about Optimus UI and what's going on with G2's bootloader  ( I've done a lot of googling but still haven't found anything useful) Tnx in advance

Like others have said, G2 is a good phone to own, especially if you are content with having it stock. If you're into custom recoveries & roms then it's a bit of hassle in G2. A small mistake or even if there's no mistake in flashing, it can go into an eternal bootloop that's damn hard to recover from. If you are flashaholic,my advice: go for phone that has plenty of development going on.

Yeah... I don't see many people with your issue up here.
But for the OP, the G2 isn't bad if you're happy with mostly stock KK and can deal with the button layout along with an okay camera with OIS.
Otherwise, evaluate your needs. If a great camera with high megapixel counts is needed, look Sony Xperia z2, or maybe the Galaxy S5. If different ROMs are what one craves, maybe a Nexus or GPE device. Removable battery? Samsung Galaxy phones. Stylus? Note 3. Metal body? HTC M8.
I jumped ship from a Nexus 4 due to crappy battery life. The screen and a decent camera were a bonus.
After playing with the new flagships, the HTC m8 is the only real option. And boringly the biggest reason is build quality

Exactly the same here. Could I have waited for a better phone like the Nexus 6 or HTC One? Probably, but my Nexus 4 battery was god awful. Charged it like 2-3 times a day and it took FOREVER to charge. G2's price was cheap at TMO and had to jump on it. Now battery lasts forever and charging is so damn fast.

Well it took me 6 months to realise that it wasn't my provider that had very bad coverage. So do people even know that they could be getting 6 bars of 4G instead of the 6 bars of 3G that the phone will choose? You won't know unless you actually force the phone to use LTE in the hidden menu (*#*4636#*#*).
It also seems that I am not alone, because I am not the only one who made a thread about it in Q and A and you will find a lot on Google. But you won't find a solution.

Which is your own opinion.
The S5 is overall a great phone. If you (OP) don't have to drop any large amount of money for the S5 then yes go for it. I had the S4 before the S5 and while i was disappointed with the S5 release specs (mainly lack of a QHD display), the device lasts forever. Battery is stupendous, display is incredible, and the CPU is very powerful. I thought the S5 wouldn't be a huge jump up from the S4, and while i would have liked the QHD and the 806 i believe, snapdragon processor, i'm still very happy with the S5.
I was considering the G3, which spec wise is prolly the only other phone that comes close to the S5. But the camera honestly is a killer on this phone.

The only downside from my own experience is that the reception is a lot worse than other phones. Mine often gets no signal in places where other phones can still get by with a few bars. After all, it is Samsung's first phone with metal frame.

As far as design and functionality. The Alpha and the 5S is very similar. The alpha has a bigger screen (4.7 inches) and battery (1850 mah) but it "feels" the same as a 5S.
Some could care less about the lollipop update because of some lag issues and battery drainage. So if you have an international version kit kat 4.4.4 will be the latest OS for you until Samsung releases the lollipop update. The att version "may" update automatically upon boot but you can always skip the download part and stick with kit kat until you're ready.
If the alpha is your first Android phone there will be a learning curve going from ios to Android. Specially with the Samsung touchwiz skin. Some playing with the phone should remedy that.
Good luck!!

Thanks for that informative response!
I like small phones, can't understand the monsters which people use these days... Held the alpha was amazed by is portability.
Also, ergonomics is really under-rated these days. Surprised the alpha didn't get more traction.
Moving to galaxy alpha is a good decision.
Compact phone + better performance + better camera (better than iP6)
Regarding the battery.. I already countered it just bought spare battery and spare battery charger from online store.
The good thing about having a spare battery and spare battery charger is avoiding charging thru phone which is resulting to being a wall hugger and limited movements of course you can't just move anywhere while having usb cord connected to ac to your phone.
Charging thru spare battery charger is approximately 2 hours but you can use the battery for 12 hours or more, just plug it and forget it well atleast for 2 hours
Or If you have a power bank just put it in your bag.
According to gsmarena.com the galaxy alpha's battery test
click
52hours, so having 2 batteries then just doble the result
Really good looking phone, extremly economic battery saver electronic, better camera than most of the phones, really fast cpu and gpu.

Thanks for that! I can imagine. Honestly, iOS is faultless. I don't think I have ever seen a piece of software so honed together like iOS.
That being said, I am tired of the small display, not willing to shed 500 on the 6, and so the Alpha came to mind.
Yup. I'd still pick the alpha over the 5s anyday. Youll love the versatility of android and possibly also the amoled screen. The screen size of the alpha is perfect. I came from lg g2 and did not like the 5" at all.
On antutu the alpha scores higher(53k) than the 5s(40k). But real world usage iphone still flawless.
For aesthetics i prefer the alpha as well. I think it looks better than the s6.

If you can find the Exynos International Version it is faster with better Audio.
Alpha is excellent, rugged little Phone.
I use 850M International on Metro PCS/ Tmobile and I notice low signal often but call quality and stability is good even with low signal in Stores and even elevators.
Your carrier may differ.

G2 vs S6 Edge...App Test (Video) G2 keeps up Nicely!!!!

Something I think will make several G2 owners Smile

Enjoy your flagship phone ladies and gents.
The G2 is still a BEAST in 2015 :good:
Now imagine it had 5.1.1, it would be at least 30% faster because of no memory leaks. I remember jumping from 5.0 to 5.1 on my Nexus 4 and WOW the difference was HUGE
G2 is a MONSTER!

Even on my wife's Moto E 2015, the jump from 5.0 to 5.1.1 was pretty amazing. That little thing is blazing fast now.
As far as G2, I'm running CM12.1 and it is slightly faster than stock 5.0.2. Not that much though.
Yes the G2 aged pretty well
I bougth an S6 (non-edge) a few weeks ago but sent it back after a week because for the price it simply wasn't a significant improvement over the G2 (and battery life on the S6 is a joke...).
On the stock rom the S6 felt slower than the G2 and there's no CM/AOSP for the Samsung Exynos phones (plus I really don't like the hardware buttons).
I have both the s6 edge and the note four, and I tell you, the LgG2 keeps up with them both.
And it came with Lte which was missing in my version of the Note 4.
It's smooth, great on multitasking, has a bright, popping screen and excellent battery life.
The one thing is that mine's the 16g - woefully inadequate these days.
Still, I have two brand new batteries ordered and some new Casing - I'm keeping this phone forever.
Even the edges of the screen are slightly curved, and I kid you not - the glass they used, and the coating they applied is better than anything out there at the moment.
Ok. I gush.

I feel a slowdown on stock 5.0.2 when i multitask (instagram-chrome-messenger-youtube), something i dont experience on 4.4.2 or CM12.1 (but its buggy)
Nice to see the G2 perform so well.
But what about the signal strength?
The S6 shows signal and the G2 does not.

G2 is a dream come true, the closest to a perfect phone, shame it has to die software wise. LG really made a stellar phone to trump the S4 and it did in every way. Size, buil, the camera, display and even software is much better and snapdragon 800 is still present in todays flagships with slight frequency increase. Hell, even the G3 is basicaly a G2 with 2K display. Smartphones have reached their apex in 2013 - 2014, there is no practical need to upgrade them hardware wise, only software. But we know how that goes. A great shame But kudos to LG for making this phone.
Well, it's the G2
That's one reason I love my G2.
And with Android 5.1 or 6 it will become even better!
Best phone ever from the best phone brand!

This is what I was looking for!
I assume you have an Exynos Note 4 as well.
For a while I was considering getting a N910c but started work on my G2's glass only repair to bring it back to life again.
Long story short I have decided to hold off on getting a Note 4 bc the G2 is still a damn good phone I don't have any reason to.
Its so fast it was way ahead of its time

G2 Has a great Radio.
Currently replacing the screen on my G2 and have been using my Moto G LTE for a while.
Motorola IMO still makes the best radios for cell phones since they've been doing it for so long.
The Moto G gets a signal in places where other phones (iphone included) die.
The G2 I have (D801) is the only phone I can say I've seen come close to the Motorola especially if you use one compatible with your Network.
Its a damn good phone AND tablet.
For the price its a STEAL.
This is coming from someone who bought it new at full price 600.00 back in 2013.

It's just because G2 doesn't have any SIM card plugged in.

The radio on the G2 is excellent. It's very, very quick, and the management is excellent - it locks on very fast and uses it very efficiently.
The Note 4 is an excellent phone too though, for the price now. Just make sure you're looking at the LTE supported version. The camera is far better than the G2, and that stylus....
Still, every time I use the G2, I'm surprised. It's quick and smooth and built like a solid block. It goes everywhere with me, and more often than not, it saves the day.
And did I say it's quick? It's quick.
I'm keeping mine forever.

outside of the camera, how does the G2 compare to the Note 4 in day to day usage, speed, graphics etc?
If this phone had 5.1 stock it would do better than in 5.0.2. It is like 25-30% faster and more responsive

Outside the camera and the stylus, the G2 is excellent. It's faster in many aspects, the scrolling is very smooth especially on Lollipop, the RAM management is far superior. Day to day, you just whip out the phone and you're up and running. The G2 had a wonderful screen - however, here, the Note 4 is clearly in a different league.
The G2 will take everything you throw at it though, and chuck it back at you quickly, and keep doing it all day.
It's a wonderful, wonderful phone - even the camera with X-cam is better than most. Anyone who's had the G2 and then moved will tell you immediately, that things are just not the same.

iMO Note 4 is much better than G2, G2 is still best for its price.Note 4 performance is slower than G2 but it open apps much faster than G2 and multitasks 3,4 apps easily. Dont know why note 4 display is little bit greenish than G2.For gaming Note 4 is far superior than G2 in smoothness, boths have not so much graphics differences.Battery life on note 4 is worse than G2.IMO G2 has much better battery life than Note 4.

G2 has an IPS panel screen which is more realistic in color reproduction than amoled - any graphic designer will choose an IPS panel monitor over any LCD/LED one anytime...
amoled, on the other side, is better in contrast and brightness... i personally like G2 screen more...
Yes, the G2 keeps up with the S6 Edge nicely. Just imagine though, it someone had managed to load the Nexus 5's 4.4.4 stock onto it? That's a whole extra 20% speed right there. :victory:
Yes I could not even believe I am still using a G2 though it still 6 months old to me, I really wanted this phone ever since its release.
my only gripe are the following;
- on CM12.1 and Stock it suffers from thermal throttling.
- telephony is not so good, (other end could not hear me properly on either phone or headset mode).
- 16GB is not even enough anymore, USB OTG can cripple battery life.
-Can someone please convert a nexus 5.1.1 stock rom port for the LG G2 please? otherwise lets not forget our phone is a beefed up Nexus 5.
